FG Recorded N910bn Fiscal Deficit in Three Months — CBN

The Federal Government recorded a fiscal deficit of N910.41bn in the fourth quarter of 2018, the Central Bank of Nigeria revealed in its latest economic report.

It said, “Federally-collected revenue, at N2.41tn, in the fourth quarter of 2018, was 27.4 per cent and 4.8 per cent lower than the estimate and the receipts in the preceding quarter, respectively.

“The development relative to budget estimate was due to the shortfall in receipts from both oil and non-oil revenue in the reviewed quarter. Federal Government estimated retained revenue and total expenditures were N916.44bn and N1.826tn, respectively, resulting in an estimated deficit of N910.41bn in the fourth quarter of 2018.”

2019 Election: INEC Yet To Review its Position on Rivers APC

The Independent National Electoral Commission said the All Progressives Congress in Rivers state would not field any candidates during the 2019 general elections.

The commission made this statement on Wednesday, February 6, 2019; days after the appeal court’s judgment.

The court stalled the execution of the judgement of the Federal High Court nullifying all primaries of APC in the state and restrained INEC from fielding candidates at the poll.

Rivers State PDP Counsel withdraws Legal Service

Mr. Ferdinand Orbih, SAN, the Rivers state counsel to the People’s Democratic Party in political matters involving PDP, All Progressives Congress and Independent National Electoral Commission, has withdrawn his legal services to the party.

Orbih announced his withdrawal during the Court of Appeal sitting in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.

Speaking on why he withdrew from the political matter, Orbih noted his withdrawal was based on personal and on “compassionate ground.”

Buhari Signs Bill Promoting Consumer Confidence, Fair Pricing to Law – Official

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday gave assent to a law aimed at promoting competition among companies and ensuring protection for consumers and small businesses, an official has said.

The Director General, Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Babatunde Irukera, said in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES that the new law will be cited as the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2019.

Mr Irukera said the president’s assent to the law is coming 20 years after the federal government made attempts to get it promulgated.

Customs Intercept Police Uniforms, Tear Gas in Lagos

Ahead of the forthcoming general elections, the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A,’ of the Nigeria Customs Service, said it intercepted bales of uniforms, tear gas canisters and other paraphernalia of the Nigeria Police Force.

The Customs Area Controller of the Unit, Muhammed Aliyu made this known on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.

According to him, a suspect was arrested in connection with the seizure.

He said the items seized portend big threat to national security as it is destined to get to the wrong hands.

Fayose Trial Continues Tomorrow

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed Thursday, February 7 for the continuation of the trial of the immediate past Governor of Ekiti, Mr Ayodele Fayose, over alleged N6.9 billion fraud.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that the case which was earlier fixed for today (Wednesday) for continuation of cross-examination of the fifth prosecution witness, has been moved to Thursday.

On the next adjourned date, both the prosecutor, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), and the defence counsel, Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN), will address the court on the admissibility of an extrajudicial statement made by a party who is not standing trial.

Global Oil Discovery in 2019 Estimated to be 20 Billion Barrels

Global discoveries of conventional oil and gas could jump to 20 billion barrels of oil equivalent this year as an industry-wide recovery in exploration activity continues to ramp up, research group Wood Mackenzie has said.

Indeed, the report noted that southern and western Africa will see resurgence in offshore exploration, as well as other South American countries like Brazil, and Mexico.

Already, President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday, flagged-off the official commencement of crude oil search in the Kolmani Well River-II, located near Barambu, Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State. Buhari also declared that the Federal Government would intensify oil exploration efforts in all frontier basins including Chad Basin, Gongola Basin, Anambra Basin, Sokoto Basin, Dahomey Basin, Bida Basin and Benue Trough.

NUC Grant Provisional Licenses to Four Newly Approved Private Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) on Tuesday granted provisional licenses to four newly approved private universities in Nigeria.

The license was presented by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu in Abuja on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

The beneficiaries are Greenfield University, Kaduna, Kaduna State; Dominion University, Ibadan, Oyo State; Trinity University, Laloko, Ogun State and Westland University, Iwo, Osun State.

Imo Lawmakers Deny Passing Law to Enable Establishment of Islamic University

The Imo State House of Assembly has denied plans to make a law that will enable the establishment of an Islamic university in the state.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Marcel Ekwezuo gave the denial in a statement to newsmen in Owerri.

According to lawmakers, the bill passed was for the establishment of Chosen University and Bishop Shanahan Polytechnic.

AIB Begins Probe of Osinbajo’s Helicopter Crash

The Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has commenced investigations into the crash-landing of an Agusto Westland AW139 helicopter conveying Vice President Yemi Osibanjo to Kabba in Kogi State.

It was also gathered that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had officially informed the AIB to investigate the incident.

This was disclosed by the Spokesman of the agency, Mr. Tunji Oketumbi during an interview with News Men on Sunday.

Police Kill Three Suspected Kidnappers in Taraba

Three suspected kidnappers, who had been terrorizing residents around Bali and Suntai Local Government Areas of Taraba State, have been killed by the Police operatives during a gun battle.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Police spokesman, ASP David Misal on Monday.

According to him, a kidnapped syndicate was neutralized, while three of the suspected kidnappers were said to have been killed in the shootout.

Suspected Internet Fraudsters Arrested in Port Harcourt

Six suspected Internet fraudsters have been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Port Harcourt Zonal Office.

The suspects were arrested at their hotel hideout in Runuigbo, Port Harcourt, Rivers.

2019 Election: NYSC Calls For Adequate Security for Corps Members

Theresa Arokoyo, the state coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC in Niger state, has called on stakeholders to provide adequate security for corps members in the forthcoming 2019 general elections.

Election: Soyinka Says Neither Buhari Nor Atiku Will Get His Vote

Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has stated that both President Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are worthy of rejection and he will not be voting for either in the forthcoming election on the 16th.

Speaking on Thursday at a press conference, tagged: “Civic Choice in a Time of Judicial Penkelemes,” held in Lagos, the literary giant said, “I, Wole Soyinka will not be voting for either of the two so-called contestants. I find both of them worthy of absolute rejection.

“For a number of reasons, I will not go into that and I am not interested in comparative assessment, it is too late for that.”

Court Stops FUTA VC from Disbursing Earned Allowances

The National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, has dragged the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, (FUTA), Prof Adeola Fuwape before an Akure National Industrial Court(NIC) over alleged illegal disbursement and misappropriation of Earned Allowances to undeserving staff without recourse to 2009 federal government/Unions Agreement.

The presiding Judge, Justice Abiola Adewemimo has therefore granted an exparte order, restraining the management of FUTA from spending or disbursing the third tranche of the earned allowance released by the federal government pending the determination of the case.

Lawyer to NAAT, FUTA branch, Iyiola Afolabi had prayed the court to grant the interim injunction to enable plaintiffs to put the University, Non Academic Staff Union(NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities(SSANU) on notice over the litigation.

FCTA, Indian Group Partner To Build Varsity Tech In Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is set to partner with the Nigerian University of Technology and Management Project group to build a university of technology and management in the FCT.

Speaking while receiving the executive of the group, led by the Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, in his office in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister of the FCT, Malam Muhammad Bello, said the project is in furtherance of the plan of the FCT Administration to have specialized institutions in phases 4 and 5 of the territory.

He noted that Abuja has matured in terms of population and infrastructure, and said the FCT Administration would give the group the support to ensure that the project commenced as quickly as possible.

Court Adjourns Suit Seeking Buhari’s Disqualification from Presidential Election

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Thursday adjourned the hearing on a suit seeking for the disqualification of President Muhammadu Buhari from the February 16 presidential election on grounds of lying regarding his educational qualification and certificates in his Form CF 001 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Justice Ahmed Mohammed fixed February 7, 2019, as the new date following a request by the plaintiffs’ counsel for time to respond to the second defendant’s counter-affidavit served on him yesterday evening.

Elections: NBC Set to Sanction Four TV Stations Over Hate Speech

The Federal Government on Wednesday warned broadcast stations in the country against picking results of the forthcoming elections from the social media.

It said the Independent National Electoral commission remained the only official source of election results.

The Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Is’haq Kawu, gave the warning on behalf of the Federal Government at a press briefing in Abuja.

Transparency International Concerned About Militarisation of 2019 Elections

Advocacy group, Transparency International (TI) on Wednesday expressed concern over the militarisation of the 2019 general elections by the Federal Government.

The organisation advised that the action should be dropped to enhance the credibility of the electoral process.

TI reiterated that its concerns were based largely on the roles played by various security personnel in the off-cycle elections held in 2018 and the desperation shown by some politicians, who wanted to be elected by all means.

2019: INEC Insists APC Will not Field Candidate In Zamfara

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has insisted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will not field candidates for the elections in Zamfara state.

INEC made its position know while reacting to two contradictory court judgments on the issue.

In the last one week, there have been two different court pronouncements on Zamafara, while a High Court in Zamafara favoured the inclusion of the party, an Abuja High Court ruled in favour of the commission omitting the party from the contesting.

Oil Falls on Increased U.S. Rig Count, China Industrial Slowdown

Oil prices fell by one percent on Monday after U.S. companies added rigs for the first time this year, a signal that crude output may rise further.

China, the world’s second-largest oil user, reported additional signs of an economic slowdown.

U.S. crude oil futures were at 53.13 dollars per barrel at 0543 GMT, down 56 cents, or 1 percent, from their last settlement.

International Brent crude oil futures were at 61.03 dollars a barrel, down 61 cents, or 1 percent.

Failed Project: British Firm Drags FG Before US Court, Seeks to Recover $8.9bn

An engineering and project management firm based in the British Virgin Islands, Process and Industrial Developments Limited, has approached the United States District Court of Columbia, seeking to enforce a $8.9bn arbitral award against the Federal Government of Nigeria.

According to the papers filed by the British firm before the US court, a copy of which our correspondent obtained on Sunday, the arbitral award against the Federal Government followed a failed power project for which the Federal Government signed a 20-year agreement with the foreign firm in 2010.

The British firm explained that in 2010 it signed a contract with the Ministry of Petroleum Resources to “help Nigeria harness its abundant natural gas reserves to solve the growing electricity crisis” in the country.

AMCON Recovered N1tn from Debtors in Eight Years –FG

Since the commencement of operations of the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria in 2010, about N1tn had been recovered from debtors of banks whose loans were taken over by the corporation.

The Minister of Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, said this in Abuja while inaugurating the board of AMCON under the chairmanship of Mr Muiz Banire (SAN)

AMCON was set up by the Federal Government through the Central Bank of Nigeria to bail out banks through the purchase of non-performing loans and to recover loans from debtors.

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry has joined in the calls for the review of the Automotive Policy, which was proclaimed by the Goodluck Jonathan administration in 2013.

Dangote Hails Road Construction Executive Order

Business mogul, Aliko Dangote, says the Executive Order 007 signed by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday will make businesses run smoothly and more profitably.

Africa’s richest man also said the new order, tagged Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme, will reduce the cost of doing business in the country.

Lawyers Protest at NBA Secretariat over Onnoghen’s Suspension, Tanko’s Appointment

Members of the National Interest Defenders and Lawyers in Defense of Democracy today, Monday, January 28, 2019, are protesting the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen and the “illegal” appointment of Tanko Mohammed as the acting CJN.

The protesters are camped at the entrance of the National Secretariat of the Nigerian Bar Association.

The protesters also called for the intervention of the National Judicial Council by reconvening and expelling Tanko who they urged to stop parading as the CJN.

Homes, Farms Set Ablaze as Two Communities Clash in Anambra

Several houses have been set ablaze and farmlands burnt following a clash between Umuemu Anam and Nzam, both in Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State over ownership of a parcel of land in the area.

It was gathered that youths of Umuemu Anam community provoked the clash by using a bush path leading to the farm camp of the neighbouring Nzam community and allegedly set ablaze their huts and yam seedlings.

Supreme Court Reserves Ruling on Rivers APC Appeal

The Supreme Court has reserved ruling on the competence of appeal filed by Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi’s faction of Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A five-man panel led by Justice Mohammed Dattijo, fixed ruling on a date to be communicated to the parties after listening to counsel’s submissions in the matter.

The Supreme Court had in December last year adjourned till March 8, 2019 to determine the legality or otherwise of primary elections the APC conducted in Rivers State to nominate its candidates for the 2019 polls.

Ex Super Eagle, Efe Sodje, Brothers Jailed in the UK for Charity Fund Diversion
A former defender with the Nigerian Super Eagles, Efe Sodje and two of his brothers have been jailed for syphoning about 60,000 pounds from a charity they set up to help poor African children, Telegraph UK reports.

$217bn Taken Out of Nigeria Illegally in 38 Years – EFCC
Nigeria has recorded illicit financial outflows of $217.7bn in 38 years, specifically between 1970 and 2008, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said in Abuja on Wednesday.

The commission stated that the various investigations, arrests, prosecution and assets recoveries over the years had confirmed that the level of corruption in Nigeria had been truly staggering.

Minimum Wage, Salary Reviews, Energy Cost May Alter Price Stability
The headline inflation for December moved further to 11.44 per cent, but may be escalated with a combination of improved minimum wage, alongside fuel and energy price hike, if unchecked.

Though the new minimum wage and proposed salary reviews are expected to improve consumer spending, there are concerns that such increment, alongside fuel and electricity price hikes, may prolong deceleration of the nation’s inflation numbers.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), average price paid by consumers for automotive gas oil (diesel) increased by 0.92% month-on-month and 7.25% year-on-year to N221.56 in December 2018 from to N219.54 in November 2018.

British MPs Vote Overwhelmingly to Reject Brexit Deal
British lawmakers voted overwhelmingly yesterday evening to reject the European Union (EU) divorce deal struck between London and Brussels, in a historic vote that leaves Brexit hanging in the balance.
The Members of Parliament (MPs) in parliament’s lower House of Commons voted by 432 to 202 to reject Prime Minister Theresa May’s agreement with the EU.
“The house has spoken and the government will listen,” May said, immediately after the vote. It is clear that the house does not support this deal but tonight’s vote tells us nothing about what it does support. Nothing about how, or even if, it intends to honour the decision” taken by the British people to leave the European Union, she said.

ASUU Strike, Violence, Others May Mar Polls, Anambra INEC Alerts
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra State has expressed worry that violence and Operation Python Dance III may constitute obstacles to smooth elections next month.

It also argued that the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would be another major challenge for a successful conduct of the polls.It stated this while evaluating its readiness to organise, supervise and conduct the elections.

LAUTECH International School Bars 55 Students over Hijab

About 55 female Muslim students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) International School Ogbomoso were on Monday prevented by authorities from entering the school premises over the use of Hijab.

A senior lecturer in the school, who pleaded anonymity, confirmed the students were turned down by the institution’s authorities for wearing Hijab on their uniforms.

According to the lecturer, the story dated back to 2011 when the first request was made to the Governing Board of the School to allow willing Muslim females children to use Hijab as part of their school uniform in line with Islamic dictate.

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has directed Mr. Kayode Egbetokun to take over from Imohimi Edgal as the Acting Commissioner of Police for Lagos State.

Egbetokun had in the past served as the Chief Security Officer to former Lagos state Governor and APC chieftain, Bola Tinubu.

EFCC Arrest Human Rights Activists for Demanding N50 Million Bribe to Withdraw Petition

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested two human rights activists for allegedly demanding a bribe from Wahum Nigeria Limited.

According to report, the President of the Path of Peace Initiatives, Dandy Eze, and one Solomon Johnson are the accused in the case.

Eze and Johnson were said to have sometime in 2018 approached Wahum Nigeria Limited to ask for N50 million to help facilitate the withdrawal of a petition written against the company, which they claimed was being investigated by the EFCC.

BREAKING: Onnoghen Absent at CCT Hearing Today

The scheduled arraignment of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen at the Code of Conduct Tribunal onallegations of false declaration of assets, proceeded today with the CJN conspicuously absent but his team of counsel was present to represent his defence.

According to reports, the members of the Danladi Umar-led three-man tribunal arrived in the courtroom at exactly 10 am and called the case at 10.01 am

Fresh Crisis Looms over New Minimum Wage

The moves by the Federal Government and the organised labour to finalise the new minimum wage issue this month face yet another crisis.

Sources at the National Assembly told The PUNCH on Sunday that the legislature plans to go on another recess ahead of the presentation of an executive bill on a new minimum wage by the presidency, which is one of the agreements reached between the government and the worker unions.

Thailand Deploys Rainmaking Planes as Pollution Chokes Bangkok
Thailand is set to deploy rainmaking planes to seed clouds in an effort to tackle the pall of pollution that has shrouded the capital in recent weeks.

The weather modification technique involves dispersing chemicals into the air to aid cloud condensation, which should, in theory, result in rain.

“The Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation expects the rainmaking to be done tomorrow (Tuesday) but it depends on wind and humidity levels,” Pralong Dumrongthai, director-general of Thailand’s Pollution Control Department, told reporters.

$8.1bn Repatriation: CBN, MTN Settle Out of Court

Telecommunications firm, MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, said on Thursday that it had reached an agreement with the Central Bank of Nigeria over the $1.8bn being demanded from it by the apex bank.

The $1.8bn demand by the CBN followed alleged forex remittances infraction by MTN.

Rather than yield to the demand, MTN, through its lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN|), sued the CBN and the Attorney General of the Federation before the Federal High Court in Lagos.

NNPC to Crash Cooking Gas Price

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on Thursday announced its readiness to implement an effective commercial framework that would halt the export of propane and butane, which are major components in the production of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, also known as cooking gas, PUNCH reports.

NNPC’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Ndu Ughamadu, said the move to stop the export of propane and butane which is anchored by the Crude Oil Marketing Division of the corporation would enable the oil firm to boost the supply of LPG to the domestic market, thereby leading to a natural downward slide in the price of the product across the country.

Nigeria Now Produces 1.78 million Barrels of Oil Daily, Says Kachikwu

Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, on Wednesday said Nigeria now produces 1.78 million barrels of crude oil per day (bpd).

Speaking in Abuja, Mr Kachikwu added that the nation was expecting output from Egina oilfield to reach 150,000 bpd by the end of the month which could boost total production.

Last week, French multinational oil and gas company, Total, said it had started production from the giant Egina Oilfield. The oil field is located 1,600 metres of water depths, 150 kilometres off the coast of Nigeria.

Jim Yong Kim Resigns as World Bank President
World Bank President Jim Yong Kim has resigned, more than three years before his term ends in 2022, the multilateral lender disclosed yesterday.

Kim is expected to leave office on February 1.

Kim, 59, said that he will immediately join a firm and focus on increasing infrastructure in developing countries. The bank did not provide further details.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has denied endorsing Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Chuks Ibegbu, deputy national publicity secretary of the organisation, issued the denial while speaking at a press conference in Enugu on Thursday.

Ibegbu said the clarification became necessary following misconceptions over the event of November 2018 where some Igbo leaders endorsed Abubakar for president.

Father Visits Boko Haram Camp to Beg Son to Surrender

Mallam Baba Modu, an 80-year-old father of a Boko Haram commander, popularly called ‘Ba-Ana,’ has narrated how he travelled to the Lake Chad camp of the Al Barnawi faction of the sect to plead with his son to dump the insurgents.

Modu, who disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Maiduguri, said his efforts to convince his son to surrender and embrace peace failed.

He said he was unable to persuade his son to abandon the cause and surrender himself to the Federal Government’s Operation Safe Corridor.

On Sunday morning, a new Twitter account was created by an 18-year-old Saudi woman denied entry into Thailand as she fled from what she said was an abusive family.

The first message from Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, in Arabic, was at 3:20 a.m. Thai time (2020 GMT Saturday) and posted from the transit area of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport. It said: “I am the girl who escaped Kuwait to Thailand. My life is in real danger if I am forced to return to Saudi Arabia.”

Within hours, a campaign sprung up on Twitter dubbed #SaveRahaf. Spread by a loose network of activists around the world, within 36 hours it prompted Thailand’s government to reverse a decision to force the young woman onto a plane that would return her to her family.

Army: Boko Haram Threatens Civilians to Vacate Homes in Borno

Boko Haram fighters have told civilians in northeast Nigeria to leave their homes, the army said on Thursday, as tensions mount in the long-running conflict.

Army spokesman Onyema Nwachukwu said there was “credible information” the jihadists had “infiltrated some villages” near the Borno state capital Maiduguri.

“They have clandestinely been going about threatening innocent residents, warning them to vacate their homes,” he said in a statement.

2019 Election: Surge in Voter Registration as Nigeria Prepares for Polls
More than 84 million people have been registered to vote in Nigeria’s general elections next month, the head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said.

Rahaf al-Qunun: Thai Authorities Pledge to Help Teenage Saudi Asylum Seeker

The head of Thailand’s immigration police has said the country will not deport a young Saudi woman who fled her family at the weekend, due to concerns for her safety.

Thai immigration officials had tried to return Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun, 18, to Kuwait, where her family is.

She refused to board a flight to Kuwait City on Monday, and barricaded herself into her hotel room at Bangkok airport.

The teenager said she believed her family would kill her if she went back.

Ganduje Awards Contract for N2.4bn Cancer Centre

Kano State government has awarded a contract for the construction of a state-of-the-art centre for the treatment of cancer at the Muhammadu Buhari Specialists Hospital in the state.

Experts indicated that the centre whose contract was awarded for N2. 4 billion, was the first of its kind in any public hospital in Nigeria, adding that it would improve access to the treatment given that Nigeria as at date, has only nine cancer centres, six of which are presently not functioning.

Speaking during an inspection visit to the proposed project site, Gov. Ganduje explained that the project implementation would be supervised by consultants from Varian Medicals, a radiation oncology treatment and software maker with a view to ensuring that it was of international standard.

Stop Criminalising Attempted Suicide, Psychiatrist Urge FG
A Consultant Psychiatrist with the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ayo Omotosho, has urged the Federal Government not to continue to criminalise attempted suicide, saying that it is usually caused by depression.

The psychiatrist made the appeal in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Ilorin,

He said that depression was a mental illness and people suffering from it deserved sympathy from the government and members of the public, rather than condemnation.

He said: “Depression is like any other illness. Depression is like every health condition. People suffering from it should not be put behind bars for attempting suicide.”

FG Commences 2019 with Attractive Savings Bonds Offer

The Federal Government has commenced the 2019 savings bonds sales by offering for subscription two-year savings bond at 12.12 per cent and three-year savings bond at 13.12 per cent, the Debt Management Office has said.

According to the offer circular obtained from the DMO website on Monday, the two-year bond will be due in January 2021, while the three-year bond will be due in January 2022.

It, however, did not state how much was offered, but added that the maximum subscription was N50m at N1,000 per unit, subject to minimum subscription of N5,000 and in multiples of N1,000.

Two Arraigned for Allegedly killing Pregnant Woman in Osun

A middle-aged man, Fatai Adegoke, and a 29-year-old woman, Khadijah Adeleke, have been arraigned before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly killing a pregnant woman. The accused were arraigned before Magistrate M. A. Awodele, but their plea was not taken.

It was gathered that the suspects allegedly killed one Risikat Adegoke on Saturday, October 27, 2018, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code.

According to the charge sheet, as a result of the attack, Risikat died on November 15, 2018, around 6.30pm. It was also stated that the suspects, by their actions, prevented Risikat from being delivered of her seven-month-old pregnancy, thereby committing an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 328, Criminal Code Law of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003.

Quest to Trace for Names in Deadly Migrant Shipwreck Results to More Dead

The hunt for identities of all the victims of the Mediterranean’s deadliest migrant shipwreck has instead revealed that the sinking was far deadlier than anyone knew. One of the two investigators on the project, tracing families and survivors in Africa, has confirmed that the boat that sank on April 18, 2015 carried not 800 migrants as previously believed, but as many as 1,100.

That up to 300 people could vanish reflects the hidden toll of migration. At a time when global migration is at a record high, The Associated Press has found in an exclusive tally that at least 62,284 migrants have died or disappeared worldwide since 2014. That’s more than double the only official attempt at a toll, by the U.N.’s International Organization for Migration.

The discovery also makes it even harder for the investigators to keep Italy’s promise to name all the dead, especially at a time when Europe has turned against migrants. After the boat sank, then-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi committed Italy to giving the migrants from the April 2015 shipwreck their identities back.

17-year-old Boy Goes Missing on Resumption Day at Enugu Varsity

Chiedozie Azuike, a 17-year-old undergraduate, has gone missing. It was gathered that Chiedozi, who just gained admission into a private university in Enugu, went missing on the day he was to resume in the school.

It was also gathered that Chiedozie’s former teacher, whom his mother had implored to take him to the university, got to their house on December 4 but did not meet him at home. However, Chiedozie’s mother, Maureen Azuike, who noted that some strange things had been happening before his disappearance, said she believed that her son was hypnotised.

She added that Chiedozie left the money she gave him and his school documents at home, which gave her the impression that he did not go to school. Maureen said, “After paying the necessary fees, I begged his former lesson teacher to help me take him to the school since I was busy.

London’s Gatwick Airport Reopens after Day-long Shutdown Due to Drones

The Gatwick airport in London was shut down at 9:03 p.m. on Wednesday due to reports of two drones flying over the airfield, the airport said in a statement. Despite a brief reopening in the early morning hours, the airport remained closed throughout the day Thursday.

Airport officials have now announced just after 6 a.m. Friday that the runway was open again and “a limited number of aircraft are scheduled for departure and arrival.”

Sussex police said they are yet to find the drone operator who was causing the shutdown, but the last drone sighting was just before 10 p.m. Thursday.

Driver Burnt Alive for Allegedly Stabbing Passenger to Death

What set out to be a busy day at the weekly Aswani market, the last before Christmas, turned riotous when a bus driver reportedly stabbed a passenger who demanded his N100 balance. He was alleged to have hit the male passenger with a spanner before stabbing him with a knife on the stomach over a disagreement on N100.

In a fit of rage, a mob then descended on the commercial bus driver, lynched and set him ablaze for allegedly stabbing the passenger to death. The incident occurred at about 10:00 a.m. at Five Star bus-stop, along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Lagos State.

According to witnesses, the said passenger disembarked from the bus and requested his balance but the bus conductor said he did not have change. At that point, the driver made to move when the passenger dragged the conductor from the bus, leading to an argument.

Teenager’s Death Covered Up by Police after Collecting N350,000 as Bribe, Mother Alleges

Fatima Wasiu is seeking justice for her late son and has accused the police in Lagos of being tardy with the probe of the teenager’s death. Fatima alleged that her 14-year-old son, Basit Wasiu, was strangled after her landlord threatened to forcefully evict her family from his house.

It was gathered that while the police were investigating the case, the landlord of No. 8 Adeniran Street, Isale Iju Ogundimu, Iju, Ishaga, Lagos State, was released after he allegedly paid the sum of N350,000 and no further action was taken on the case.

The mother of four said she was denied justice because she did not have money and had no one to fight for her. Fatima said, “I moved into the apartment in 2016. When my rent was due for renewal in June 2018, my landlord requested that I pay for one and a half years, but I told him that I could only afford to pay for one year. At first, he told me to bring the money but after some days, he returned it and said the payment was already late.

NATIONWIDE STRIKE: ASUU-LASU DEMANDS PAYMENT OF ACADEMIC ALLOWANCE

Lecturers under the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos state chapter have asked the Federal Government to pay all its earned academic allowances since 2009.

POLICE DETAIN DEJI ADEYANJU AGAIN FOR MURDER CASE FOUR YEARS AFTER ACQUITTAL

The police have detained an activist and Convener, Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, for homicide for which he was reportedly acquitted by Justice Mohammed Haliru of the Kano High Court in 2014.

Adeyanju’s lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, said his client had been incarcerated for six days by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command.

Babaleye explained in a statement in Abuja on Monday that the activist was detained when he visited the FCT Police Command headquarters to retrieve his mobile telephone, which was confiscated after he led a rally against the police for their role in the political crisis that rocked the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly last month.

THE FALSITY OF OMOLADE ADUNBI

As an avid reader, I have read some pretty bad articles in my life, especially from supposed “intellectuals,” but none like the one written by Omolade Adunbi where he deliberately attacked the person of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, former minister for Finance and Coordinating Minister of the economy.

Atfirst, Omolade’s piece is meant to serve as a critique of Mrs Iweala’s newbook, Fighting Corruption is Dangerous, but it doesn’t take long for the reader to realise it is more than that.Vindictive in tone, Omolade takes on the role of the trickster god, trying to persuadehis readers that there is a second layer of truths beneath what we find inNgozi Okonjo-Iweala’s book.

He clearly takes some sadistic delight in faulting what has been documented in the book. How is it that Mrs Okonjo-Iweala’s academic history, or his efforts to portray her as an over-privileged persona; a Harvard and MIT-trained woman with highly educated parents, have anything to do with her service to the country?

In his recent piece on Dr NOI’s book, Fighting Corruption is Dangerous, Dr Omolade Adenubi confirms that he is an intellectual lightweight hiding behind a professorial title and the name of a great institution. Why someone supposedly working in a well-known institution would engage in what is typically known as a “hatchet piece” is beyond comprehension and best left to people’s imagination. The piece is scarcely worth commenting on except that it impugns the character and reputation of a great lady old enough to be his grandmother Prof Kamene Okonjo.

Essentially, in the piece titled “The Lady is not for turning” Adenubi who identifies himself as a professor at the University of Michigan calls Prof Kamene Okonjo a liar, all but in name, since he claims her story of being kidnapped by people who told her they had taken her because her daughter the finance minister did not pay oil marketers is false. Prof Adenubi, without any proof, writes that it was just one of a regular series of ongoing kidnappings at the time.

KIM KARDASHIAN PRAISES MOTHER FOR PREVENTING HER FROM TURNING INTO CRAZY DRUG ADDICT

Reality star Kim Kardashian shocked fans on a recent episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians when she revealed she had dabbled with ecstasy twice, with disastrous consequences – namely walking down the aisle with Damon Thomas in 2000 and recording a sex tape with then-partner Ray J in 2003.

Kim opened up about her revelation as she was interviewed by Busy Philipps on Busy Tonight, and admitted she realised how much she had to lose after she told Kris about her experimentation with the dangerous drug.

“I would tell my mom everything, we always had such a close relationship. So, I would come home and be like, ‘Oh my god, mom, I did ecstasy last night,'” Kim explained. “She was sitting on top of the washing machine, (and) she like jumped up on it, and we were sitting in the hallway by the garage… and she was like, ‘You one day, you’re not going to be able to have babies, you can’t do this, you’re going to ruin yourself!’ Like she was so upset.

The singer gave the heart-warming apology in an Instagram Video on Monday, December 10, 2018.

The ‘Joromi’ singer’s concert started hours behind schedule, forcing some attendees to leave before she mounted the stage while others were unable to stay till the end.
