Mrs Gift Nnonye Ukatu, a housewife have been jailed for 13 years by the Lagos State High Court for human trafficking.

Mrs Ukatu was arrested in 2015 following tip off by concerned citizens after she had haboured two girls under the age of 12 and engaged them in force labour, domestic work and enslavement.

Ukatu was charged on a 6 count of habouring two girls and forcing them into Labour, domestic work and enslavement.

Mrs Ukatu was reported to have jumped bail but was later rearrested and rearraigned in 2016 where she pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The presiding judge, Justice Kudy Jones sentence Mrs Ukatu to 13 years imprisonment.

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) in the South East has rejected the establishment of cattle colonies in states across the country as a means to solve the farmers and herdsmen clashes.

This was revealed in a statement by the Vice President of PFN in South East and Former Chairman Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Imo State, Cosmas Ilechukwu and made available to NGHUBS on Sunday.

Mr Ilechukwu condemned the plan in strong terms on the basis that the cattle belongs to individuals and not the entire nation.

“It will be a gross abuse of office to take over people’s landed property and give to a group of others for their private business,” he said.

Speaking concerning the incessant attacks in Benue, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba state, Mr Ilechukwu said the PFN condemns these gruesome murder insisting it is not a communal clash but a well-planned and properly coordinated attacks on Christians.

He, however, scored the security operatives low in their manner and approach in tackling the issue.

The association appealed to Christians across the country especially in the northern part of the country should not take laws into their hands but must be security conscious and pray to God for these incessant attacks to cease

Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Friday, January 19, 2018, refused a plea by a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, to vacate the bench warrant issued against him over an alleged N5.3billion fraud.

Nnamani, his former aide, Sunday Anyaogu, and six companies was first arraigned in 2007 for allegedly conspiring to divert about N5.3bn from the coffers of Enugu State.

The case, which had been handled by no fewer than three judges, was in December 2017 transferred to Justice Obiozor, who fixed December 4, 2017 for the re-arraignment of the defendants.

The judge, however, issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Nnamani and Anyaogu for their failure to appear in court at the last adjourned date.

At today’s sitting, Justice Obiozor, in refusing Nnamani’s prayer moved by his lawyer, Rickey Tarfa, SAN, held that “The request for an order to discharge the bench warrant against the first defendant before me, for now, is hereby refused. This is without prejudice to the renewal of the application at the next adjourned date.”

The judge also struck out an application filed by Tarfa, challenging the court’s jurisdiction and seeking a perpetual injunction to restrain the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, from arresting his client, after he (Tarfa) had asked to withdraw same.

Tarfa had contended that there was no valid charge against his client before the court, after he had earlier withdrawn the application.

He told the court that a plea bargain had been entered in the case, leading to the conviction of the 3rd to 8th defendants.

However, in his response, the prosecuting counsel, Kelvin Uzozie, told the court that, though there was a plea bargain in respect of the 3rd to 8th defendants, the case of Nnamani and Anyaogu, who were joined as first and second defendants, had yet to be concluded.

“We are working on an amendment of the charge to reflect the proper situation. We will ask the court to indulge us by way of an adjournment to bring a clean copy of the charge sheet,” Uzozie added.

Justice Obiozor granted the application for adjournment, as the defence counsel did not oppose it.

Consequently, Justice Obiozor adjourned to February 20, 2018

Rising from a 9-hour State Executive Council meeting, the administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State yesterday announced its plans to ensure adequate water supply in Enugu metropolis and Nsukka to meet up with increasing demand.

Addressing newsmen after the council’s meeting, the Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Charles Egumgbe said that the state government was targeting 40,000 cubic meters of water supply by the end of the year to ensure that the people of the state enjoy adequate supply.

Dr. Egumgbe noted that the EXCO meeting was “specifically” devoted to issues of water, especially on how to make it available for the people of Enugu metropolis and Nsukka, adding that the council considered proposals from reputable companies both locally and internationally, which centered on water production, reticulation as well as power supply.

The Water Resources Commissioner stated that Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration apart from the N100 million it injected at its inception to increase the output of water supply to Enugu metropolis, also awarded contract worth about N170million for the maintenance of water facilities at Ajali and Oji River Water Plants to further boost supply.

He disclosed that the state presently generate over 18,000 cubic meters of water, saying, “that is why we now have water moving into every other parts of Enugu such as Ogui, New Layout, some parts of Independence Layout, New Haven, Abakpa, Achara Layout, Uwani, among others.

“Our target is to ensure that we produce about 40,000 cubic meters of water so that substantially, most of Enugu will have water in the short term. But in the long term, the entire Enugu will have water, in keeping with our policy”, Dr. Egumgbe said.

He added that the state government was considering the possibility of engaging the services of independent energy supply companies as alternative to Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), to avoid the ugly experience of unstable public power supply, which he said, hinders pumping of water to end users.

“So these multiple matters were dealt at the EXCO meeting towards ensuring that both in the short term and long term we will have water within Enugu metropolis and Nsukka as well. This council meeting was dedicated to seeing what we can do to solve perennial water challenges. We are looking forward that before the end of this year, we will have a cause to smile in the area of water availability”, he said.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe, disclosed that the council approved the payment of gratuity to retired Judges in the state, stressing that the retired members of the bench have been receiving their pensions regularly.

Mr. Anikwe announced that EXCO also approved the 2016 promotion for civil servants in the state and agreed that similar promotion exercise be carried out at the local government areas for 1254 employees of different cadre for the approval of the council.

The Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Emeka Okeke, who also addressed the press revealed plan by the government to enhance its relationship with the people at the grassroots for effective and sustained channel of communication that would enable it feel the pulse of the rural dwellers in all the 457 autonomous community in the state.

Barr. Okeke noted that the measure which is a two-way communication mechanism where every autonomous community will have a representative that will be interfacing with the government on its programmes and policies and communicate to the people of the area on a feedback approach, was in line with the administration’s grassroots development initiatives. The National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Prince Uche Secondus has appointed Sen. Ighoyota Amori as his Political Adviser.

According to NGHUBS, Senator Amori’s appointment was announced in a statement signed by Kola Alogbandiyan, the National Publicity Secretary of PDP and made available to NGHUBS on Friday.

The statement further revealed that Seen Amori’s appointment takes effect from January 1, 2018.

Sen. Amori had served in the same capacity to two past Governors of Delta State.

The Indegenous People of Biafra IPOB has lost the bid to reverse proscription of IPOB by the Federal Government at the Federal High Court.

According to report, the Acting Chief Judge of the Federal High, Justice Abdu Kafarati, resolved all the three issues tendered before the court against the proscribed group.

Justice Kafarati squashed the contention of IPOB’s lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, that the group is not registered in Nigeria and could not be sued in Nigeria.

Justice Kafarati likened IPOB to a foreign who could be arrested when he commits a crime in another country.

The judge also held that the issuance of the proscription order by him in chambers following an ex parte application was in accordance with the provisions of the Terrorism Prevention Act.

The judge awarded the sum of N500 as cost against IPOB.

His Excellency, Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on sunday, visited the long neglected community to inspect the road constructed by his administration (phase one).

Accrding to NGHUBS, Gov. Igwuanyi ordered the contractor handling the project back to site for the construction of additional two kilometers of the road pending further improvement on the income of the state.

Gov. Ugwuanyi regretted the hardship being encountered by the people of the area because of the deplorable condition of the road, which they (people) said had never witnessed any form of development in the past 100 years.

Governor Ugwuanyi reassured the community of his commitment to their wellbeing, recalling that he had paid an unscheduled visit to the area early last year to personally assess the road and also find out from the people their most pressing need for government’s immediate intervention.

Anambra State government yesterday commenced demolition of illegal structures allegedly used by criminals and prostitutes at toll gate axis of Onitsha-Enugu, Express way.



This followed a directives given by Governor Willie Obiano to Physical Planning Board, Head of Development Control, Army, Police, Ocha Brigade among others, to rid the state of all illegal structures and shanties that provide hiding place for Criminals or Promote anti-social activities across the state.

The illegal structures whichb cut across both lanes of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway of the toll gate axis Onitsha were alleged to be a criminal hide out and a place where prostitutes and other miscreants engage in nefarious activities.

According to the Security Adviser to the Governor, Chief Chikodi Anara, the occupants of the areas equally pollute and deface the areas with human waste and other materials.

Speaking on the demolition exercise, the General Manager Anambra State Physical Planning Board, Mrs Ngozi Atisele and the Head of Development Control, Awka Capital Authority, Mr. Victor Okpoko, explained that the shanties were removed for security reasons and called on people residing in shanties in Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi and other nooks and crannies of the State to pack out or relocate as government will no longer tolerate such structures in the state.

Some of the residents who spoke to ABS, Sunday Udeh, Vincent Akpu, Nwakasi Gabriel, Nnabuife Nwaonu and Chigbogu Eze, regretted that such acts occur in the place but appealed to the Governor to give them more time to relocate while others agreed that they will do the needful by building structures that will have approved plan as according to them, the area is the only place they get their livelihood.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, on 9 January 2018, commissioned a newly built block of boys’ hostel at Air Force Comprehensive School (AFCS) Uyo. The befitting new hostel, which was designed and constructed by engineers of the NAF Directorate of Works, is dedicated for the comfort of SS3 students.



The new hostel is thus expected to be a source of motivation for the junior students to work hard to get to SS3 Class. In his remarks at the commissioning ceremony, the CAS commended the staff and students of AFCS Uyo for the exemplary and impressive record they had shown over the years in the Senior Secondary School Examination (SSSE) results as well as other external examinations and competitions.

Air Marshal Abubakar also recognized that the efforts of the NAF in improving the quality of education in all its schools could not have been possible without the unflinching support of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“We are immensely grateful to Mr President for providing the resources and enabling environment for the NAF to effectively deliver on its constitutional roles”, he said.

While commissioning the hostel, Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State observed that the quality of the hostel competes favourably with hostels of old in Nigeria’s premier universities.

He therefore congratulated the CAS on the quality of work done and for improving on the facilities available in the School.

He particularly commended the performance of the School in the last SSSE during which nearly 100 per cent of the students had credits in a minimum of 5 subjects, including Mathematics and English Language.

He then promised that the State Government would support the NAF’s efforts by completing the building of a block of staff quarters, which it had earlier embarked upon. It is noteworthy that many of the students in the School are indigenes of Akwa Ibom State

While receiving the CAS, who later paid him a courtesy call at the Government House, Governor Emmanuel requested for the establishment of a NAF Base in Uyo towards enhancing security in the State. He stated the readiness of the State to support such a base with the modern aviation facilities available at the Akwa Ibom International Airport Uyo.

Speaking earlier, Air Marshal Abubakar expressed the desire of the NAF to partner with the 2 universities in Akwa Ibom State in the area of Research and Development towards further improving the aircraft maintenance capability of the NAF.

He added that similar partnerships with other Nigerian universities had already revealed the abundance of talents as a result of which the NAF was able to resolve some aircraft maintenance related challenges.

The CAS then announced that a team of NAF officers from the Air Force Research and Development Centre would soon visit the 2 universities in the State in respect of the planned collaboration. In response to the Governor’s request for the establishment of a NAF Base in Uyo, Air Marshal Abubakar stated that due consideration would be given to the request.

Governor Udom Emmanuel later hosted the CAS and his team of senior NAF officers to a gala night at the Government House Banquet Hall. Immediately after the visit to Uyo, the CAS and his entourage proceeded on an operational tour of the NAF Base in Calabar.

The Anambra State Police command on Wednesday announced restrictions of movement in some parts of Anambra​ state.

According to a statement by the Anambra State Commissioners of police Garba Baba Umar and made available to NGHUBS, the restrictions is due to the Anambra Central Senetorial election.

NGHUBS also gathered that the affected areas include Awka North, Awka South, Dunukofia, Njikoka , Idemili North, Idemili South and Anaocha.

The Anambra State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the Anambra State Central Senatorial Election is scheduled to take place on the 13th January,2018 at the 109 wards of the seven(7)L.G.A of the State.

Based on the above, the Command wishes to inform the public that there will be restriction of movement within the affected Local Government Areas which include:, Awka North, Awka South, Dunukofia, Njikoka , Idemili North, Idemili South and Anaocha.

Road Traffic warders will however, be on hand to direct road users on alternate routes.
