I used to be into hip hop back in 2005 (who am I kidding, I'm still a big hip hop junkie) and I formed the name n-guage (engage) for myself because my real name starts with a 'n'. The line that inspired the name was from a Common song 'Sum Shit I wrote' the last track on his 1995 album Resurrection (my favorite album ever).

The line: "Engage in a page, and with words I elope"

Did you catch the extended metaphor and how he formed a relationship between love and writing lyrics. When he starts writing ( engage in a page), he escapes (elopes) with words? Isn't that brilliant? This is why I get pissed when people say hip hop is not an art form and try to reduce the whole hip hop scene to a misogynistic, backward, gun totting society.
