Education / Re: Why Do Nigerian Universities Charge Ridiculous Amount For Transcripts? by nickvanilla(m): 5:40pm On Feb 15, 2021
You didn't even mention the amount of stress one will go through to get the unofficial transcript. Having to bribe a long line of school staff to obtain what you worked so hard for.

In a sane country, once you graduate you are meant to have access to your transcript without much hassle. Nigeria must always be different.

Travel / Re: Your Experience Moving Back To Nigeria by nickvanilla(m): 8:50am On Feb 04, 2021
roteblomen:
Not move per se, but I've been in Nigeria now for one month, and I'm enjoying every part of it. It has everything to do with mindset. If you see the cup half full or half empty. Before coming, I identified the major issue that will make my life easy and tackled them from the start.

For me it was power, logistics, and western-like comfort. Also, I'll try not to move around often unless necessary, to avoid traffic frustrations and bad road bumping. In these regards, getting a car, an AC in my whole apartment, house renovation and inverter was my goal. To have 100% uninterrupted power, and not being dealt with by the hot sun. My food stuff I buy either through jumia or send someone, and my office is in one of the bedrooms in my apartment.

I'm still working on all these, but these are the things one needs to do to make Nigeria less frustrating. I have an online business, so I don't really have to go anywhere. With a western income in a country like Nigeria, you'll enjoy yourself everyday. But make sure you have the ability to go back if needed, for stuff like medical care and much more.

Right now, I see Nigeria like a holiday resort, I enjoy everyday of it. Like I said earlier, its about if you see the glass half full, or half empty, a lot have to do with your mindset. If you're the type that expect perfection in everything and complains a lot, then Nigeria is not for you, because you'll be frustrated every single seconds. Particularly, I enjoy the food, and that everyone looks like me. Unless I intentionally speak with a foreign accent, no one knows I'm from anywhere, and I like that invisibility.

Also, do not forget that Nigeria contains about 36 states. You don't have to live in Lagos, Abuja or port Harcourt to enjoy Nigeria, I'm in Enugu now and this city is not only peaceful, but ridiculously cheap to live in. My uncle rent a duplex in trans ekulu area for about 500k per year, that's about 1000 us dollars. For reference, I pay 1.100 USD monthly for a flat in Amsterdam, so you see, the difference?

To summarise, just have an income from abroad, get a car for mobility, a good house in a safe area, renovate your house to western standards, outsource unnecessary things such as laundry and food stockings, and enjoy your life. Everyday will feel like holiday in Nigeria with this formula. Naija sweet.

Nice. How would you describe Amsterdam? Is it a place one could aspire to go study, graduate and get a job? How about the language? Was it hard to learn?

Honestly, this is how great countries are built. Where people are well paid and respected whilst doing "menial jobs".

Every day I go out, I see people sweeping our streets, those guys should earn nothing less than 100k per month. No police man in Nigeria should earn less than 150k. These people are so important and should be treated fairly. No job should be undignified in terms of remuneration, etc.

My annoyance is that all the people that writes about migrating to Canada are actually resident there, holed up in Brampton or Calgary and be discouraging people from embarking on the same journey.

It is already a well known fact that Nigerians abroad hates fellow Nigerians trying to make the same immigration journey. I don't know why. Please leave people to make their decision.

Some people feel that too many Nigerians moving into their location will end up spoiling the place. grin

Why is everyone rushing to Canada instead of Germany where the tuition is free?

I think I should jump ship to Canada.

I've thought of this too. Germany is tuition free but Canada is better for students because it's easy to integrate and move around (no language barrier).

Then the block account ish. Even one's parents might be reluctant to put huge sums of money in a block account, talk less of a distant relative or guardian.

Travel / Re: What Is The Meaning Of "Is English Your First Language"? by nickvanilla(m): 5:46pm On Jan 02, 2021
It means; is English the first language you were introduced to after birth?

Whether you were born in a country that's not considered a native speaking country is not the question.

If English is the first language you learnt to speak, then it's your first language.

Some Nigerian children only know how to speak English. They may be Igbo, Yoruba or Hausa but they were not taught any other language apart from English while growing up. I even know Nigerians living here who would get lost if you try to talk to them in Pidgin English.

Travel / Re: Please What Are The Travel Options That A Law Graduate Have? by nickvanilla(m): 5:57pm On Jan 01, 2021
I think in Europe, apart from the UK, it's kinda difficult to blend into the legal culture. Then there's the issue of language barrier. Law is a profession where your ability to manipulate words cleverly is a required skill, either when writing or speaking. How would a Nigerian lawyer move into a country like the Netherlands and start practicing? Very difficult I must say.

It's possible to switch professions anyway to something relevant to the local economy. But I've observed that most schools would want you to study something related to your first degree. So moving from law to a STEM course is more possible with private universities where they are after your money. grin

UK, Canada, USA remain the best destinations for Nigerian lawyers, yet the competition is so fierce as other International trained lawyers in Africa, Asia and South America are also moving there in droves.

So to sum it up and advise, I would say attend a private university and study a STEM course if you've got the money. If your pocket is not so deep, then you should go in to your desired destination with the aim of continuing your legal practice. You know you have to be willing to give 159% to stand out from the crowd. Who knows, you may be blessed with a favourable return. Gentlemen at the bar, I wish you all good luck!!

how can one apply for it?

I really don't know but you can find it out. What I heard some people do is look for a friend or someone who can offer them the job. Then when they get into Canada, they look for another job and start hustling.

The way Nigerians think up these things baffle me. But it makes sense. I had a close family member tell me she has already gotten work visa via this program.

Somehow, this is a very smart move considering that many Nigerians will find it difficult moving into Canada via express entry. Who is that person that has masters degree, 3 years work experience and below 30 years in Naija. Or is it student visa? How many people have the funds for it?

Anyhow sha, do further research. It's possible.

Please has anybody heard of this new UN-Tapped visa route called “Blue Print” before ?

It's the home care pilot program. Nothing special there. Something a guy on youtube is selling for £50 or thereabouts. You apply for a job as a home care giver, your employer also processes your work visa and you move. It also aids in getting PR as a job offer in Canada gives 200 additional points.

Prison is one place you enter, and if you're lucky to come out, you end up hating everything and everyone. While some people deserve to be locked up like animals, they are still people who because of lack of access to legal representation and fair trials find themselves in these horrible places.

Taking this battle to court will only help in enriching some lawyers' pockets. You can't base an argument on conjectures. You need hard, solid evidence and as it stands, there is NONE!

Chronic borrowing or debt pillage is a sign of economic cluelessness.Servicing these debts in itself is not a sound economic policy because debt servicing is not debt payment

Cut costs of governance(salary of presidency/NASS, reduce foreign travels until really needful, disposed off the excess presidential jets, scrapping of redundant agencies esp.NNPC & merging of others, etc), no plea bargain for indicted corrupt persons, prospecting for alternate energy system, cut off wasteful oil exploration,

However, Nigeria's case @ present is a government that is just senselessly obsessed with endless borrowings. Perhaps until Nigeria is offered for sale by our creditors on e-bay, Amazon, OLX before una go understand what is @ stake.

You've said it all.

I would have come here to laugh but I have to be honest. This is the one of the best barca performances I have seen in recent times. Fati is extremely good. He shouldn't have been taken off IMO.

Busquets is a genius. Trincao is a future balon d'or contender. Lenglet and Pique demonstrated why they are the best CB combination in the world. Neto is a revelation. He should play more often.

And our GOAT, Messi. He was just unlucky today. But he was passionate.....yes he was. That vicious ball he kicked to the referee proved he's still on fire for Barcelona.

Bad result? Yeah. But we muueeeve!! cool embarassed grin

Guy. There's nothing wrong with you. And ignore all these people saying you should "FOCUS". A lot of hypocrites on Nairaland.

Definitely, it makes more sense to only date people you have intentions of marrying. But that shouldn't deprive you of making meaningful relationships. Not everything will lead to marriage anyway. Just loosen up a bit.
