Redeemed Church Opens World's Biggest Auditorium, Costs N7.7b by Mamajama(m): 10:35pm On Dec 11, 2007
The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has opened, arguably, the world’s biggest auditorium. The facility can accommodate more than a million worshippers at a time. The auditorium, which was opened by the General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, was built at a cost of $60 million (about N7.7 billion).

This is why Nigerians will continue to live in poverty. We have homeless people on the streets and jobless people, yet a pastor with a vision is spending the congregations tithes and offering on this extravagant building.

I guess religion has now turn to a profitable business.

People are putting together monumental tons of cold bricks, labelling it the "house of God" while the "children of God" go hungry.

Is this N7.7b tax payers money? undecided

Only in Nigeria would a church think of such project.

The naira does not have any value again.

Can you cost what it took King Solomon to errect a place of worship for God?

I've tried as much as I know that a reasonable human will understand to explain to you that I'm not BIGB1.

What does the value of the naira (which is appreciating) have to do with this?
Churches build large auditoriums so they can collect more money per service. Simple!

Now I think that was wholly arrogant, you should probably make your research better. churches get larger space because theres being need for a bigger worship ground as the number of worshipers grow (mostly during the convention season). Its not so they CAN COLLECT MORE MONEY. Who told you the church needs your money!?
Re: Redeemed Church Opens World's Biggest Auditorium, Costs N7.7b by Nobody: 1:33am On Dec 12, 2007
Churches can be a little extravagant these days but I do not think people's tithes and offerings are the sources of their wealth because churches do invest in other things.

The point is that no matter what any church does or how they spend their money, the point is to glorify God's name and for everyone of us to have a relationship with God.

I'm really disappointed.

@ Mamajama
No one was forced to donate that money and it was meant for God's house.Pastor Adeboye is not the President of Nigeria and that building is not his. He's the most humble man of God i've seen.

@ spelsrus

I disagree with you.
It's obvious u've got lil knowledge of the Bible.

disappointed with what? Let's face reality pls, N7.7bn naira to build an auditorium in a nation were 70% are living on less than $1 a day . . . we rely on loans, world bank aid and an unstable oil price too survive and yet we were able to generate that lot to build a house?  shocked
If RCCG put less than half that money as grants to local entrepreneurs, scholarships to gifted but indigent students, repair a few roads . . . it would have been money well spent.

I am a christian too but pls READ YOUR BIBLES very well . . . Christ went about doing good, not taxing the poor to build Himself a palace.

Brothers. Please when will we open our eyes? This is clearly a "faux Pas" A case of Gross Misplacement of Priority. This is not the Injunction of the Christ. You see why I hate religion of today.? Most of us misinterpret and take the Word of God out of Context. These Charlatans of the Gospels have mislead many. Is God still interested in Physical Abodes. Is it not the same Gospels that tell us of God Making His Home in Man. God is more interested in the hearts of men not physical structures that he has marked for destruction. Behold He is making a New Heaven and a New Earth !

For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I create a Jerusalem as a rejoicing, and her people a joy. (Isaiah 65:17-19)

Looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat . . . Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for a new heaven and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. (2 Peter 3:12-13)

Why waste 8 billion in a land plagued by so much poverty and unemployment. These guys cajole people to part with their monies for wasteful projects like these.

Please don't go quoting the verse that they have long used as their Weapons of Mass Extortion "Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm."1 Chronicles 16:22

Even Chris Okotie Quotes these Verse as a Weapon. The same Chris that cannot manage a home!! http://www.thenewsng.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=3921 Even TB Joshua and Chris Onyakhilome ( Masters of Crowd Control ) Quote this popular verse too.

IBB STOLE FROM YOU ALL,  Not a single one of you have confronted him. The Guy built a Humongous Building with the money that belongs to you and your children, right on top of a Hill. Yet no single one of you all have touched him or even stepped forward.

Obasanjo STOLE FROM YOU ALL,  NOt a single one of you have confronted him yet. The guy runs his farm with your money and pockets it daily.

Adedibu,  the 80 something who is not done pocketing the money wey your papa and mama for use live better life,  is still there daily in your face, daring you all to come at him . NO ONE ,

ABACHA stoles from you all and passed the money down to generations of his kids. Even say the man die, una no fit touch his family for fear. '

I pity my country - make your money and spend it - they criticise you, remain poor - they criticise you - what then will you do that will not be criticised? I guess the answer is to start your own NairaLand - the land where mouths run without any brake - no brake no jam. Church members willingly give - what wrong has the church done if the church spends the money in her coffers?

If your pastor rides a Bentely and you walk barefooted? how has that made him less a man of God? They say Deeper life is very austere in their lifestyle, they say Winners is too flamboyant, now they say Redeem has spent too much money building an auditorium - na wa .

The media doesn't consider scholarship giving, welfare as news, but church and money is always a big deal to the secular media. Because RCCG DO NOT BROADCAST THEMSELVES ON (or preferably, did not tell you about) scholarship and welfare doesn't mean they do not do anything for the poor none of you guys as "christians" has tried helping.

Jesus went about doing good, what have you gone about doing today?

Sad Sad development.

Wasted money. The true houses of God (Christians) are swindled out of their money to construct a building for a few selfish interests. I wonder where this verse goes to when it comes to these donations and tithe -

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
1st Cor 6:19

Suddenly when one man wants to expand his empire he says he's building a church for God ignoring the fact that people not buildings are the God's church and Christ not this man is the head of this Church while we are the body.

hhhmmm,  we already have the PICK AND CHOOSE theologians here to feed us with selective verses of the bible to support their own opinion but completely skip the other parts that speak of living lavishly  grin grin cheesy grin cheesy grin cheesy.

This is sort of the debate some Christians get into when they claim that God is against WAR and when you ask them for Bible verses to support their claim. They come up with 1) GOD IS LOVE
2) TURN YOUR OTHER CHEEK
3) Greet your brother with a Holy kiss
4) LOve Your neigbour as yourself

But then ,  they do not bring up the verses where God tells the isrealites to SMITE the enemy and make sure none is left. No one remembers that in the end, Jesus is coming with an army to fight a battle,  LMAO!!!!

'The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge'. I think its wiser not to comment lipsrsealed negatively on religious issues.
Case study: One of David's wives became barren for complaining about King David's overzealous worshiping of God. Solomon spent much more building the temple of the Lord, and the good Book states clearly that the people gave willingly. Pastors don't force the congregation to make donations towards the completion of building projects or to pay tithes and offerings. Rather, they preach about the benefits of giving to God (via your church) and towards God's work (building projects).

In a nutshell, the concept of giving is just a part of the equation (Christianity). You don't just give, sit back and expect positive results.

Is the money Adebayor's? If yes then it is his business firm and not a church, I dont care what he uses it for. If NO then I can point out it was misappropriated.

What exactly was David doing when his wife complained? Aint you misquoting here?

Solomon spent at what time? Was it at the time when you became the temple, the church, the body?

That is another baseless claim. The fact you have to go all the way to Solomon to support a building tells a lot dont it? wink

We are indeed in the last days.
Most Nigerians can't eat decent meals and a Church in one of the poorest countries in the world builds a 60 million dollar church building
And people are celebrating ?
When did this spirit of covetousness enter the Church and why are people not seeing it?

Would the Holy Spirit leave redeemed if it had cost 10 or 20 million and the rest used to dig borehole in every nook and corner of Nigeria?
How about soup kitchen to feed our poor and hungry in the streets of Lagos?
Would they not have been doing a better work rather than magnificent buildings made of hands?
look at this sorry picture of my nation.
Those women could have been me and those innocent children could have been mine but for God's grace.
The country has failed them.
The people of God are also failing them.
We need a reality check.
Whatever we do to help them,we do unto the Lord.
Our big gigantic houses of worship does not impress God and does not impress widows and destitutes.

The Bible says that on that day many will say,we did so so and so and the Lord will say depart!!!!!,I knew you not
God help us to hold dear to what is dear to his heart
