Phones / Good News To Iphone User, apple Increases Download Limit From 150 MB To 200 MB by nigeriapenbase: 3:40pm On Jun 01, 2019
TechNews By Topmag.pw

The iOS App Store now lets you download apps up to 200 MB in size while on a cell network; anything bigger than that, and you’ll need to connect to WiFi. Before this change, the cap was 150 MB.

And if you’ve got an unlimited (be it actually unlimited or cough-cough-‘unlimited’) plan, or if you know you’ve got enough monthly data left to cover a big download, or you just really, really need a certain big app and WiFi just isn’t available? You’re still out of luck. That 200 MB cap hits everyone. People have found tricky, fleeting workarounds to bypass the cap over the years, but there’s no official “Yeah, yeah, the app is huge, I know.” button to click or power user setting to toggle.

iPhone App Store being cautious about file size isn’t inherently a bad thing; with many users only getting an allotment of a couple gigs a month, a few accidental downloads over the cell networks can eat up that data quick. But it really does suck to open up an app you need and find it’s requiring some update that exceeds the cap, only to realize you’re nowhere near a friendly WiFi network. At least give us the choice, you know?

Although, most developers seem to be pretty aware of the cap; they’ll hack and slash their app install package until it squeaks under the limit, even if it means downloading more stuff through the app itself post-install. Now, at least, they’ve got 50 more megabytes of wiggle room to start with.

Business / Huawei Cuts Technical Meetings With US Contacts, send US Workers Home by nigeriapenbase: 2:53am On Jun 01, 2019

Sequel to US Ongoing ban on Chinese technology giant Huawei, the company has found itself in yet another dilemma: How to pursue internal communications with its own U.S. employees?

For now, the company has ordered its Chinese employees to bar technical meetings with their U.S. contacts and sent home the American workers deployed in research and development functions in Shenzhen headquarters.

Huawei’s chief strategy architect, Dang Wenshuan told the Financial Times that the company has also limited general communications between its Chinese and U.S. workers.

The move comes as the Chinese technology giant scrambles to comply with the murky laws after its weeks-long tension with the U.S. government sees no signs of resolution in the immediate future.

The Chinese Tech giant is also controlling the subjects of interactions workers in its campus have with overseas visitors.

The conversations cannot touch topics related to technology, the FT report said. Dang said the company was just trying to ensure it was on the right side of the law.

It remains unclear exactly how export controls could mandate disruption of internal communications within an organization.

Huawei could be using this tack as a bargaining chip, showing the U.S. that its own citizens are being hurt by its policies. A Huawei spokesperson declined to comment on queries sent by Topmg.pw

Earlier this month, Huawei and 68 affiliates were put on an “entity list” by the U.S. Commerce Department over national security concerns, forcing American companies to take approval from the government before conducting any business with the Chinese giant.

In the aftermath, a range of companies, including chipmakers, Google and Microsoft, have made significant changes to their business agreements with Huawei.

Phones / Blackberry Messenger (BBM) Dies Today, Goodbye Blackberry Messenger by nigeriapenbase: 6:51pm On May 31, 2019
TechNews By Topmag.pw

Few month ago, decorative door hardware company,Emtek announced the end of BlackBerry Messenger(BBM) for consumers. The once-mighty messaging service had a good run, outstripping the popularity of its hardware namesake.

BBM was Launched in 2005, licensing rights for the service were acquired by Indonesia-based tech conglomerate Emtek 11 years later. For many years, BBM was considered BlackBerry’s (nee Research in Motion) strongest product, with some loyalists eschewing Android and iOS devices before it was finally ported over to those operating systems in 2013.

But competition ultimately proved too much. Technology and the world moved away from BBM and BlackBerry at large. The rewards, it seems, weren’t worth the resources.

“We poured our hearts into making this a reality, and we are proud of what we have built to date,” Emtek wrote in a blog post last month. “The technology industry however, is very fluid, and in spite of our substantial efforts, users have moved on to other platforms, while new users proved difficult to sign on.”

Loyalists can still download files, photos and videos from the service today, before they vanish forever. Notably, BBM Enterprise will live on for business users, but the death of the consumer version should be regarded as the end of an important era for smartphones nonetheless.

Phones / Huawei Devices Will No Longer Use SD Card Slots As U.S. Sanction Continues by nigeriapenbase: 7:13pm On May 27, 2019
TechNews By Topmag.Pw

Huawei has been hit with plenty of blows that doesn’t look good at all, One Of the Blow include the loss of chip designer ARM from the UK

Chip designer ARM has sent a memo to employees telling them to cease “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” with Huawei because of “US origin technology” in ARM’s designs. ARM’s technology is the foundation for most mobile chipsets and without it Huawei wouldn’t be able to develop its own chips.

ARM has officially stated only that it is “complying with all of the latest regulations set forth by the US government”. Huawei has also responded by stating that, “We value our close relationships with our partners, but recognise the pressure some of them are under, as a result of politically motivated decisions.”

Huawei has been de-listed from the SD Association and no longer appears on its list of members. That means that Huawei can no longer officially use microSD cards or microSD slot in its devices. The ban doesn’t impact the smartphones Huawei already has on the market, but it will impact upcoming devices. Android devices commonly have microSD card slots, and that is seen by many as one of the big benefits of Android devices over iPhones.

The SD Association is the non-profit that controls the standards for SD products. It controls all formats from full-size SD to the microSD cards used in smartphones. Companies who aren’t a member can’t officially produce smartphones, tablets, or other devices using the standards or media. It’s also worth noting that Huawei had previously been moving away from microSD cards and slots to something it developed in-house called NanoMemory. It’s unclear if that NanoMemory tech uses any patents that might be restricted.

Crime / Nigerian Girls Reportedly Sold At N210,000 As Sex Slaves In Mali - NAPTIP by nigeriapenbase: 12:59pm On May 27, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The cries of some Nigerian girls sold as as sex slaves in Mali have been heard in the ECOWAS parliament by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP.

NAPTIP Director-General, Julie Okah-Donli, while speaking at a presentation to members of the ECOWAS Parliament, revealed that the Nigerian girls were being sold for between N210,000 and N240,000 to work as prostitutes, Vanguard reports.

NAPTIP is seeking an agreement between Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries to end the practice of Nigerian girls being used as sex slaves in Mali.

Sold As Sex Slaves1
Presenting the report of the fact-finding mission to Mali, Okah-Donli said that after being sold, the girls were made to pay back between N1.08 million and N1.2 million, usually within eight months, to their madams.

She said,

"There are more than one million Nigerians residing in Mali. About 20,000 of these Nigerians are girls believed to be victims of trafficking and the number increases by 50 per day.

"Many victims are deceived to leave their livelihoods in Nigeria for greener pastures in 'Mali"

"Some of the victims are abducted from Nigeria, including those that arrive in school uniforms."

"On arrival at the border town between Burkina Faso and Mali, many of the girls are sold off for CFA 350,000 to 400,000; their new owners then make them pay back about CFA 1.6 million to CFA 2 million with one CFA being 0.6 Naira," she said.

Okah-Donli said that as part of efforts to curb the trend, the agency recommended among other things, that Nigeria should develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mali, Burkina Faso, Benin Republic, Guinea and Senegal.

She said,

"There is need for comprehensive sensitisation of rescued victims before repatriation and a comprehensive blueprint worked out for tracing, empowerment and rehabilitation of victims".

Politics / Alex Ekwueme University Opens Labs To Institutions, Scientists (PHOTOS) by nigeriapenbase: 8:15pm On May 22, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

Alex Ekwueme Federal Univeristy, Ndufu-Alike, Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi has urged
tertiary institutions, scientists and researchers to use its facility for characterisation research.

The institution’s Dean of Engineering and Technology, Prof. Onuegbu Ugwu, made the call on Tuesday in an interview with
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Characterisation refers to the broad and general process by which a material’s structure and properties are probed and measured.

It is a fundamental process in the field of materials science, without which no scientific understanding of engineering materials can be ascertained.

Ugwu recalled that the school acquired the characterisation equipment in February through the intervention of the National Office for
Technology Acquisition and Promotion, in collaboration with PZ and supported by Federal Ministry of Science and Technology.

The equipment included Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, Fourier Infrared Spectroscopy and Ultra Violet Visible Spectroscopy.

He said “just like most tertiary institutions in some countries and in Nigeria in particular, most times we lack critical infrastructure
needed for research and it affects universities in performing state-of-the-art research.

“At the moment, such equipment exists only in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State and that means researchers from
other parts of the country must travel to Kaduna State to conduct research.

“With this intervention however, it places us in good position to conduct research and to make it available to our colleagues in
other institutions around us because it has universal application.

“The facilities are major equipment that will boost capacity building and compete with any of such equipment from any part of the world.”

NPFL to observe 60 secs silence
Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Coaches, Players and Officials have all agreed to honour late Lobi Stars coach Solomon Ogbeide by wearing black armbands during fixtures of MatchDay 22 on Sunday, May 26 which will wrap up the 2018/19 NPFL season.

Chairman of the League Management Company (LMC) Shehu Dikko announced the decision.

He described the news of the Lobi Stars Coach’s death as “a grave loss to the league and hundreds of players he trained in over two decades of his career as a football coach in our league”.

Ogbeide reportedly collapsed and died Monday morning soon after feeling sick in Makurdi, hours before their last home fixture of the season.

Dikko assured that the LMC would go to lengths to honour those who have contributed in any measure to the development of the league.

“In addition to the black armbands, a minute silence will be observed before kickoff at all the match venues in honour of the veteran coach”, Dikko stated.

“Our thoughts are with his immediate family, with players and staff of Lobi Stars and with all the players he impacted their careers.”

Politics / FG Reacts To Suspension Of Dropbox By US Embassy by nigeriapenbase: 8:52am On May 22, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, on Monday said the Federal Government has engaged the U.S. government to make the issue of visa issuance less difficult for genuine Nigerian visitors to America.

Onyeama said this on Tuesday in Abuja while fielding questions from newsmen on the negative impact the issue of visa overstay had on Nigerians travelling to the U.S.

The minister expressed concern that one of the consequences of the visa overstay was the recent suspension of `Dropbox’ for visa renewal for Nigerians.

The minister said that most of the unfavourable migrant decisions taken by some countries were triggered by the negative perceptions about few Nigerians who do not obey the rules of those countries.

“The issue of migration is a challenge and such a sensitive topic because the U.S. has just suspended the `Dropbox for visas renewals.

“And a lot of it is that they released statistics to show that 10 per cent of people who overstayed their visas globally are Nigerians.

“Those who do not obey the rule of other countries’ have more negative impact on those who obeyed,” the minister said.

He said that there had been those who were denied visas not because they were not qualified but because of perception created by those who disobeyed the rules.

“The issue of those who overstayed their visas is a real issue. We have engaged with the U.S government over it.

“We are just trying to work through them and they are looking at various alternative and solutions and to make less difficult for the genuine visitors and the like.

“Things like you have to have guarantor or surety and the like, all those things are what they are trying to apply to really address this issue,” NAN quoted him as saying.

Onyeama added that the ministry was doing what it could to ensure that the issue of the recent suspension of dropbox for visas renewal do not affect genuine visitors to the U.S.
“We are doing what we can; they (U.S. Embassy) told me that notwithstanding the suspension of drop box mechanism that there would be expedited interview for certain people.

“And that there would be that flexibility to request for interview that might make it easier for those seeking visa,” he said.

Business / Amazon Provide E-commerce Giant Its Own Internet Domain by nigeriapenbase: 1:48am On May 22, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The E-commerce giant Amazon was on its way to running its own online neighborhood Monday after the internet’s address keeper granted the “.amazon” domain to the company.

After waiting for years to no purpose, the U.S online retail colossus and an alliance of South American countries to resolve their battle over the right to web addresses ending with “.amazon,” the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) this month sided with the Seattle-based company.

In 2012, Amazon applied for “.amazon” and two internationalised versions of the name. Brazil and several other countries put the US company on notice that they were opposed to the idea.

“Due to its inseparable semantic relation to the Amazon forest, that domain should not be, in any way, the monopoly of a company,” the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs argued on its website.

“On the contrary, it is imperative that the States concerned be able to participate in the management and use of the name in order to defend and promote the natural, cultural and symbolic heritage of the Amazon region, as well as foster the regional economy and the digital inclusion of the populations living there.”

ICANN said it balanced concerns of all involved and stalled the company’s application for the domain in hopes the Internet firm and member states of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization would work out a solution.

“ACTO and the Amazon corporation have been unable to come to a mutually acceptable solution or agree on an extension of time for continued discussions,” ICANN said.

“In light of this, the board is now moving forward with the next steps laid out… and is directing ICANN org to continue processing the .AMAZON applications toward delegation.”

There will be a public comment period as per procedures established for granting new domain names.

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry said it feared the ICANN decision did not sufficiently take into account the interests of the South American governments involved and undermined the rights of sovereign states.

Crime / EFCC Arraigns 2 Lawyers In Court For Stealing N188.7m From Dead Boss - SaharaRep by nigeriapenbase: 9:12pm On May 17, 2019
Tom Awhana, the former Head of Chambers for the Law Office of Mr. Mogbeyi Sagay, a late Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) was on arraigned on Friday at an Ikeja Special Offences Court for stealing N188.7 million belonging to the law firm of the late senior lawyer.

Awhana was arraigned alongside Paul Okoro a former lawyer in the law firm who is also accused by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of stealing N3.6million from the firm.

Awhana and Okoro pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of conspiracy to steal.

Okoro denied the charge of stealing while Awhana pleaded not guilty to a 16-count charge of stealing.

According to the EFCC, Awhana was the Head of Chambers of the law firm of Mogbeyi Sagay and Co. from 2010 to 2018.

Sagay his Principal, died in 2012.

He was made signatory to the law firm's Zenith Bank Account alongside three administrators of the late SAN's estate.

It was allegedly mandated that three persons out of the four administrators can withdraw from the bank account with the cheque booklet of the Zenith Bank account in Awhana's possession.

The prosecution said that unknown to the staff of the firm, other administrators and the consultant to the law firm, Awhana opened other secret bank accounts in the name of Mogbeyi Sagay (SAN) and Co. in FCMB, Union Bank and Heritage Bank Plc.

The first defendant (Awhana) is alleged to have diverted drawn cheques into those secret accounts. He is also alleged to have from 2012 to 2017, stolen a total of N188.7 million belonging to Mogbeyi Sagay (SAN) and Co.

Okoro, the second defendant, is alleged by the prosecution to have from Oct. 14, 2012 to June 28 2013, stole N3.6 million belonging to the law firm.

According to the EFCC, the offences contravene Sections 287 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos 2015.

Following the plea of the defendants, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo, the lead prosecuting counsel for the anti-graft agency, requested for a trial date adding that the court should impose stiff bail conditions on the lawyers.

"I have discussed with my learned friends, I will leave it to my lordship to impose bail conditions that will make the defendants available in court throughout this trial," Oyedepo said.

Ms. Oluwaseun Olusiyi, the defence counsel to Awhana, via a bail application dated May 17 asked the court to grant him bail in self recognisance.

"The first defendant is a legal practitioner of high repute and negotiations towards an amicable resolution are underway with the complainant. He was the Head of Chambers of the firm," Olusiyi said.

Mr. K. U Ani, the counsel to Okoro the second defendant in his bail application dated May 17 also asked the court to grant him bail on self recognisance.

"The second defendant has fractured his legs and is depending on medical treatment. I ask that ypu grant him bail on self recognisance My Lord," he said.

Justice Mojisola Dada in a short ruling noted that settlement talks were ongoing between the complainant and the defendants.

She ordered that as a bail condition, Awhana and Okoro should submit their international passports to the court.

"The defendants shall however submit their international passports pending the determination of this suit.

"They shall be remanded in prison custody till the perfection of their bail condition. This case is adjourned until June 4 for trial," she said.

Politics / Embattled CJN, Walter Onnoghen Loses Again At The Supreme Court - Nigeriapen by nigeriapenbase: 8:05pm On May 17, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

The Supreme Court has struck out an application by the Cross River State Government challenging the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The court on Friday said it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter and consequently dismissed the application.

Justice Onnoghen was suspended in January, by an order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal. Following his suspension, the Cross Rivers State Government approached the Supreme Court asking it to invoke section 232 (1) of the constitution to assume original jurisdiction on the matter, citing violations of the constitutional provisions in the suspension.

But in its lead judgement, the Supreme Court agreed with the submissions of the Federal Government that it lacked jurisdiction to entertain the suit. However, in a dissenting judgement, Justice Mary Odili held that the suspension did not follow laid down procedure as stipulated by law, insisting that the Supreme Court has jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

Celebrities / Viral Video: Pantyless Woman Dances Showing Off Her BIG Private Part by nigeriapenbase: 6:27pm On May 17, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

One might say some activities are too private to be taken to the streets – or to a tavern.

But the woman in the video clearly wasn’t worried that she was surrounded by a cheering crowd and video cameras.

In the video, a woman dressed in jeans dares the woman to come onto the dance floor and she rushes onto the stage to join in what looks like a dancing battle.

The crowd cheers for the woman in jeans, which seems to challenge the woman in the dress even more.

Guests go crazy when they see that she’s not wearing panties.

A woman in the background is heard saying: “I can’t believe what I’m seeing!”

When two women try to stop her she falls to her knees, twerking to the sound of the popular amapiano music.

A man shows his appreciation by slipping a R10 note between the woman’s twerking bum.

A woman in white shorts comes onto the stage and twerks on top of the other woman.
