Education / Three Pupils Struck Dead By Lightning In Uganda (photo) by nigeriapenbase: 10:02am On Jun 28, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

Three pupils were on Wednesday struck dead by lightning in Kibaale District, western Uganda. Police and residents identified the deceased as Robert Zabayo, a 14-year-old pupil at Kisalizi primary school, his brother Mbabazi Marina, 6 and a friend Moses Alinaitwe, 10. Zabayo and Mbabazi were children of Obed Byomugisa while Alinaitwe was Ayebale’s son, both residents of Kyenkonge village in Kyebando Sub County.

The three had taken shelter at Byomugisa’s home when they were struck during the Wednesday evening downpour.

The pupils had just returned from school and were playing in the compound when it started raining. They reportedly sought shelter on a veranda of Byomugisa’s home. “They were killed by lightning and bodies are at Kyebando health centre pending postmortem,” said Mr David Otabong, the Kibaale District Police Commander.

Police visited the scene and recorded statements from eye witnesses.

Mr Otabong asked parents and local leaders to install lightning arresters on all buildings.

Family / 41-year-old Indonesian Widower Weds 13-year-Old 3 Months After Meeting Online by nigeriapenbase: 3:57pm On Jun 20, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

Over the past couple of years, the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi has been in the news with alarming frequency for viral stories of children getting married, either among themselves or with much older adults.

According to reports, a 41-year-old widower named Rustam Ashary last week married a 13-year-old girl, who has been identified by her initials SW, both of whom are from the Sidrap regency of South Sulawesi. Rustam met SW on Facebook, and the pair reportedly communicated via the social media platform for three months before deciding to marry.

“We the families gave our blessings to their relationship,” SW’s mother, Nurhayati, told Detik after her child’s marriage, insisting that her daughter was never pressured into marrying Rustam and that they are now happy together.“She’s still in Grade 1 at an MTs (religious middle school, equivalent to grade 7),” Nurhayati added when asked about her daughter’s schooling. Photos from Rustam and SW’s wedding day have circulated online, some showing them holding up their marriage certificate, confirming that the union is legally recognized.

The South Sulawesi provincial government say they had no legal jurisdiction to prevent Rustam and SW’s marriage, but now that it has happened they are focusing on ensuring that SW still receives her rights as a child. “We want to ensure she gets her rights such as to a full education,” South Sulawesi Child Protection Services Head Nur Anti told Detik .

Nur added that the government has urged SW to delay her pregnancy until after she finishes formal schooling, but the reality is that it would be difficult for them to intervene in Rustam and SW’s private lives, whereas, if they weren’t legally married, the 13-year-old would be considered a victim of statutory rape. The current legal age of marriage in Indonesia is 19 years old for men and 16 years old for women.

However, the country’s 1974 Law on Marriage also includes a major loophole to this requirement which allows marriages to still be considered legal if they are done “in accordance” with religious belief, known as nikah siri.

As such, underage marriages that have been sanctified by religious courts or officials must still be officially recognized by the government — if not, many are satisfied with merely fulfilling religious or traditional requirements for marriage.

Business / Huawei Ban: Microsoft Resume Sales Of Huawei Laptops Online by nigeriapenbase: 7:37am On Jun 19, 2019

It was on Monday Microsoft announce it has resumed sales of Huawei laptops on its website after a weeks-long stoppage.

The action reflects the evolving dynamic for U.S. companies that have done business with Huawei, which has been caught in the middle of growing U.S.-China trade tension. The move is a sign of cooperation with a company that delivers Windows revenue, which is still core to Microsoft’s business despite its focus on cloud computing products.

Last month a government agency restricted how U.S. companies could sell products to Huawei, and shortly after that Microsoft’s supply of devices like the MateBook X Pro vanished. The agency then eased restrictions for 90 days, leading to changes in the way Google would work with Huawei during that period. Now Huawei Matebook laptops are available once again.

“We have been evaluating, and will continue to respond to, the many business, technical and regulatory complexities stemming from the recent addition of Huawei to the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Export Administration Regulations Entity List. As a result, we are resuming the sale of existing inventory of Huawei devices at Microsoft Store,” a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC in an email.

Additionally, Microsoft said it would keep delivering software update sto Huawei devices that people own today.

“We remain committed to providing exceptional customer experiences. Our initial evaluation of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s decision on Huawei has indicated we may continue to offer Microsoft software updates to customers with Huawei devices,” Microsoft said.

The trade restrictions from the U.S., China’s telecoms equipment and smartphone maker Huawei expect its revenues to drop $30 billion below forecast over the next two years, founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei said Monday during a panel discussion at the company’s Shenzhen headquarters.

Huawei’s production will slow down in the next two years while revenues will hover around $100 billion this and next year, according to the executive. The firm’s overseas smartphone shipment is tipped to drop 40%, he said, confirming an earlier report from Bloomberg.

Huawei Boss, Ren assured that Huawei’s output will be “rejuvenated” by the year 2021 after a period of adjustment.

Huawei’s challenges are multifaceted as the U.S. “entity list” bars it from procuring from American chip makers and using certain Android services among a list of other restrictions. In response, the Chinese behemoth recently announced it has been preparing for years its own backup chips and an alternative smartphone operating system.

“We didn’t expect the U.S. to attack Huawei with such intense and determined effort. We are not only banned from providing targeted components but also from joining a lot of international organizations, collaborating with many universities, using anything with American components or even connecting to networks that use American parts,” said Ren at the panel.

The founder said these adverse circumstances, though greater than what he expected, would not prevent the company from making strides. “We are like a damaged plane that protected only its heart and fuel tank but not its appendages. Huawei will get tested by the adjustment period and through time. We will grow stronger as we make this step.”

Heroes in any times go through great challenges,” reads a placard left on a table at a Huawei campus cafe, featuring the image of a damaged World War II aircraft.

Huawei That image of the beaten aircraft holding out during hard times is sticking to employees’ minds through little motivational placards distributed across the Huawei campus. TechCrunch was among a small group of journalists who spoke to Huawei staff about the current U.S.-China situation, and many of them shared Ren’s upbeat, resilient attitude.

“I’m very confident about the current situation,” said an employee who has been working at Huawei for five years and who couldn’t reveal his name as he wasn’t authorized to speak to the press. “And my confidence stems from the way our boss understands and anticipates the future.”

More collaboration

74-year-old Ren had kept a quiet profile ever since founding Huawei, but he has recently appeared more in front of media as his company is thrown under growing scrutiny from the west. That includes efforts like the Monday panel, which was dubbed “A Coffee with Ren” and known to be Ren’s first such fireside chat.

Speaking alongside George Gilder, an American writer and speaker on technology, and Nicholas Negroponte, co-founder of the MIT Media Lab, Ren said he believed in a more collaborative and open economy, which can result in greater mutual gains between countries.

“The west was the first to bring up the concept of economic globalization. It’s the right move. But there will be big waves rising from the process, and we must handle them with correct rather than radical measures,” said Ren.

Webmasters / Lyrics Site Genius Accuses Google Of Stealing Song Lyrics by nigeriapenbase: 3:59pm On Jun 17, 2019

Google says it doesn’t take a Genius to generate song lyrics results

Song lyrics and trivia website Genius has accused Google of stealing its work for its own search results, according to the Wall Street Journal.

When you search for a song title using Google, the search engine will often display its lyrics in an information box at the top of your search results, along with videos, release date, song writers, and information on where to listen to it.

Report from Engadget claims Google is “not only hurting its traffic with its lyrics cards, but sometimes grabbing Genius’ lyrics verbatim,” which it says it can prove by looking at the apostrophes in the lyrics.
This is because Genius alternated between straight and curved apostrophes “as a form of watermarking” – the website claims that there were “over 100 instances” where

Google’s search result-generated lyrics contained the exact same apostrophes.

Amusingly, these apostrophes have a secret meaning, reportedly spelling out ‘red-handed’ when converted to Morse code’s dots and dashes.

Searching ‘We Are The Champions’ in Google brings up the song lyrics along with a video from YouTube. (Image credit: Queen Official / EMI)

Google responds
Google has responded to the claims with a statement, saying: “the lyrics displayed in the information boxes and in Knowledge Panels on Google Search are licensed from a variety of sources and are not scraped from sites on the web.”

“We take data quality and creator rights very seriously, and hold our licensing partners accountable to the terms of our agreement. We’re investigating this issue with our data partners and if we find that partners are not upholding good practices we will end our agreements.”

Genius says that Google is “both violating antitrust law and its terms of service”, and claims that it alerted the search engine to the problem in 2017.

It’s unlikely this case will ever make its way to court, as it’s unlikely to go in Genius’ favor – after all, Genius doesn’t own the copyright to the song lyrics themselves, only having the right to display them.
