Politics / Nigerian Army Confirms Killings Of Colonel, Captain, Others In Ambush by nigeriapenbase: 4:45pm On Jul 19, 2019

. The Nigerian Army has confirmed the killing of an Army Colonel, a Captain and three other military personnel in an ambush laid by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno/ Yobe states axis yesterday July 18th.

In a statemet released today Friday July 19th, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, in Charge of the 212 Battalion in the northeast, Col Ado Isa said the incident happened when troops were in hot pursuit of terrorists who came to attack a military base. According to Isa, three soldiers were also killed in the attack.

The statement by Col Isa reads “Troops of 212 Battalion deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Jakana, on Wednesday 18Th July 2019 dealt with and neutralised unconfirmed number of Boko Haram/ISWAP Terrorists when they woefully attempted to infiltrate their base in dire need for logistics.

“The terrorists came at about 1845 hours in 7 Gun Trucks and fought fiercely to infiltrate the camp, but the attack was thwarted with heavy fire and bombardment by the gallant and patriotic troops who were vigilant and battle-ready.“

The terrorists couldn’t bear the firepower any longer after losing a significant number of both equipment and personnel in an exchange of fire.

“They lost initiative and withdrew in disarray along the Benisheikh – Damaturu axis, – abandoning a damaged utility Gun truck which was earmarked to convey looted items.

“Troops immediately followed in hot pursuit and the following items were captured:1 x Anti Aircraft Gun2 x Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Tubes2 x AK 47 Rifles15 x Machine Gun roundsand 12 x AK 47 NATO rounds.“Sadly, a Colonel and a Captain, as well as 3 soldiers on transit from Maiduguri to Damaturu, run into an ambush staged by the routed/fleeing terrorists from the Jakana axis which led to their unfortunate death.

“The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai while commiserating with the families of the fallen heroes reiterated that “Personnel of the Nigerian Army will never be deterred in the ongoing noble and patriotic fight against terrorism and insurgency in the North East”.

“He further commended the efforts of the entire troops in the theatre and charged them to remain focus, highly committed and professional in the discharge of their constitutional roles.

“The sacrifices of the fallen heroes in the ongoing fight against terrorism and insurgency is no doubt painful to all, but that will further spur us to do more to ensure that our country remains secured, peaceful and free from terrorist activities for the overall interest of the nation.”

Sports / Seedorf Sacked By Cameroon After AFCON Exit (photos) by nigeriapenbase: 12:21am On Jul 17, 2019

Clarence Seedorf has been sacked by the Cameroon Football Federation, barely a week after the Indomitable Lions exited the 2019 African Cup of Nations competition following a defeat by Nigeria’s Super Eagles. Coach Clarence Seedorf who was sacked alongside his assistant Patrick Kluivert, had taken over the role in August 2018.

“After consulting the Fecafoot Executive Committee and the Ministry of Sports and Education, in the wake of the premature elimination of Cameroon senior male national team from the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, the Cameroon Football Federation, in conformity with the stipulations of the resolutive condition of their respective employment contracts, has decided to terminate the duties of coach Clarence Clyde Seedorf and his assistant Patrick Stephan Kluivert with immediate effect,” a statement signed by Fecafoot president Seidou Mbombo Njoya read.

Crime / Three Secondary School Students Arrested For Shooting Two Schoolmates In SA by nigeriapenbase: 11:20pm On Jul 16, 2019
News By Nigeriapen.com.ng

Three students of MH Joosub Secondary School in Lenasia, South Africa, were arrested on Tuesday morning for shooting two schoolmates.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the shooting occurred outside the school’s premises before teaching took place. The two victims of the incident, are receiving medical attention at Lenmed Clinic and Lenasia Clinic.

“We have sent our psychosocial unit to support the staff and learners at the school, including the victims and their families. The level of violence in and around our schools is of grave concern,” Gauteng department of education spokesperson Steve Mabona said.

A resident of the area told newsmen that the shooting stemmed from the previous fight the boys had. “We heard that the boys had fought before so maybe that is what led to the shooting.

I cannot say with certainty but I think it’s because of the fighting,” said the resident. Sowetan reported that the Police spokesperson, Col Lungelo Dlamini said three boys between the ages of 14 and 17 were arrested.

It was further gathered that a pistol and six rounds of ammunition were recovered at the home of one of the students.

Career / Amazon Workers In Germany To Strike Over Pay, Verdi Union Says (PHOTOS) by nigeriapenbase: 4:23am On Jul 16, 2019

Workers at seven Amazon sites across Germany will go on strike over pay for at least two days this week starting on Sunday night going into Monday, labour union Verdi said.

The strikes, under the motto “No more discount on our incomes”, will coincide with Amazon’s Prime Day when the US online retail giant offers its ‘Prime’ customers discount deals. Germany is its second-biggest market after the United States.

Amazon has faced a long-running battle with unions in Germany over better pay and conditions for logistics workers, who have staged frequent strikes since 2013.

“While Amazon fuels bargain hunting on Prime Day with hefty discounts, employees are being deprived of a living wage,” Verdi retail specialist Orhan Akman said in a statement.

“The company must finally recognise the collective wage agreements for the retail and mail order sectors,” Akman said. “Wages and salaries at Amazon must no longer be determined in the style of a lord of the manor.”

Amazon workersVerdi also demanded that collective bargaining agreements be made binding across Germany’s retail sector.

“A universally binding collective agreement would then apply for Amazon too,” said Akman.

Amazon runs 12 warehouses in Germany. Earlier on July 14, Amazon said it plans to open a new warehouse in Germany this year and create more than 2,800 jobs with permanent contracts.

Facebook’s planned virtual unit Libra, already under heavy attack from US president Donald Trump and global regulators, faces scepticism among the wider cryptocurrency community as well.

One theme – besides Brexit – dominated discussion among the movers and shakers from London’s financial technology or FinTech industry as gathered for their annual get-together: the future of virtual currencies.

“Can I just ask you to raise your hand if you would not be willing to use Libra?” asked the moderator at an event at London’s recent ‘FinTech Week’. In the room, filled with about 100 experts and media who closely track the sector, about two-thirds of participants raised their hand to express distrust at the upstart currency.

Helen Disney, founder and boss of Unblocked Events, which promotes the blockchain technology that powers many cryptocurrencies, acknowledged growing doubts over who exactly would oversee and regulate Libra’s operation.

Power to the people

People are “concerned about how the governance … would work”, Disney shared. “The cryptocurrency community is very libertarian in thinking,” its “about giving power to the people, democratisation of finance, keeping away from big banks and companies who control (the) economy,” she said.

Last week’s gathering came one month after Facebook announced to the world its plans for the virtual currency. Libra, which is widely regarded as a challenger to dominant global player Bitcoin, is expected to launch in the first half of 2020.

Whereas Bitcoin is decentralised, Libra will be co-managed by 100 partner firms, including Facebook’s newly-minted financial services division Calibra. The companies behind Libra – which will be backed with a basket of real-world currencies – include payment giants Visa, MasterCard and PayPal, as well as taxi-hailing services Lyft and Uber.

To access Libra on smartphones, users will go through a virtual wallet that will also be named Calibra. While Facebook boasts an enormous customer base dotted across the globe that should facilitate Libra’s uptake, it firm also been plagued by privacy concerns that could make users hesitate.

“Can’t wait for a cryptocurrency with the ethics of Uber, the censorship resistance of Paypal, and the centralisation of Visa, all tied together under the proven privacy of Facebook,” said Sarah Jamie Lewis, head of non-profit research organisation Open Privacy.

Foreign Affairs / Chad Lifts Ban On Social Media Usage After More Than A Year by nigeriapenbase: 4:39pm On Jul 15, 2019
Chad lifted a more than a year-long ban on social media including Facebook and Twitter that the government said had been necessary for security reasons.

This announcement was officilly made by president Idriss Deby at a conference about digital technology in the capital, N’Djamena.

While he said he’d instructed Internet service providers to suspend the restrictions immediately, he appealed “to everyone’s sense of responsibility so that these means of communication are an instrument of development and not a source of division.”

The access to social media had been blocked since March last year. Chad’s parliament adopted a new electoral code in June ahead of legislative elections that have been postponed three times already as the cash-strapped government tries to mobilise funds for the vote.

The oil-producing nation,Chad was rocked by a series of strikes and protests after the government obtained a US$312mil (RM1.2bil) bailout from the International Monetary Fund two years ago and began implementing austerity measures.

Foreign Affairs / Huawei In Preparation To Lay Off Hundreds Of US Workers (photos) by nigeriapenbase: 12:17pm On Jul 15, 2019
Chinese telecommunications firm Huawei is reportedly preparing to lay off hundreds of workers in the United States, reports The Wall Street Journal. The company has struggled in recent months after the Trump administration placed a de facto ban on US sales to the company, citing potential security threats and amidst the ongoing US-Chinese trade war.

According to the WSJ, Huawei is planning to lay off workers at a research subsidiary called Futurewei Technologies, which operates a number of research labs. Huawei will reportedly allow some Chinese employees the option of relocating back to China to remain within the company. Some employees have apparently already been notified that they will be let go, with other layoffs planned in the near future.

On May, the White House issued an executive order that allowed the US Commerce Secretary to give the US the authority to prevent US companies from selling to entities designated a threat to national security.

As a result, Huawei is no longer able to buy some of the parts and software that it needs for its products. While it looked as though Huawei might be getting a bit of a reprieve from the US ban on sales last month, the Trump administration has indicated that things likely won’t change until the two countries resolve their differences.
