Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Monday, January 28, received the traditional title of Obong Emem Akwa Ibom while in the state in continuation of his campaigns to lead Nigeria.

The was done on behalf of the traditional rulers in the state by the chairman, State Council of Chiefs, HRM Ntong Effiong Udoakpa, the paramount ruler of Ini local government area.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate also used the opportunity to interface with monarchs in the state and receive their blessings ahead of the February 16 contest.

Residents in the state hailed Atiku for showing deep respect for Akwa Ibom traditional stool by his visit to Traditional Rulers Council on arrival to the state. Atiku received the traditional title of Obong Emem Akwa Ibom during his visit.

Atiku’s visit is a sharp contrast to the stance of President Muhammadu Buhari, who touched down the state for a similar event weeks ago. President Buhari’s visit had caused a major controversy as it clashed with a major traditional event (coronation of Oku Ibom Ibibio) in the state.

The Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement had written an open letter to President Buhari expressing concern that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom state fixed Friday, December 28, 2019 for the flag-off campaign, a day it said is sacred for the Akwa Ibom traditional institution.

The group appealed to the president to reschedule the launch of his campaign, as a sign of respect to the Akwa Ibom traditional elections. While the group was ignored, many saw the action of the president as clear disregard to laid down protocols he upholds elsewhere and a deliberate slight on the people.

“President Buhari was probably acting on the advise of some Akwa Ibom sons. “It is a breach of protocols to visit a state without paying a courtesy visit to traditional rulers. Buhari is himself a titled chief, he should be aware of this and he certainly follows the norm except that he chose to ignore our monarchs,” a titled chief in the state said. Zamfara State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Yari, has warned National Assembly against passing a new National Minimum Wage that would be difficult for states to pay.

Yari, who is the Chairman, Nigerian Governors Forum, issued the warning in an interview with journalists on the sidelines of the public hearing on new National Minimum Wage bill on Monday in Abuja.

News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) recalls that the organised labour leaders had rejected the approved N27,000 by the national council of states, demanding N30,000 as a new minimum wage.

Reacting to the demand of organised labour, Yari said that the demand for N30,000 as the new minimum was not realistic.

The Acting Inspector General of Police, Adamu Mohammed, has named Obudu born cop, Anthony Ugbizi Michael, among the six new DIGs sent to the Police Service Commission yesterday, for confirmation.

Until his latest appointment, Ugbizi who hails from Bebuabung village in Obudu, Cross River state was Commissioner in charge of Delta State Police Command.

Ugbizi is an alumnus of the University of Calabar where he obtained B.sc in Political Science.

He enlisted into the Force in 1986 as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), and has previously served as ACP DOPs Delta State, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Special Investigation Unit FCIID Abuja, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Counter Terrorism and General Investigation, EFCC.

National Adviser, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Prince Bola Fadahunsi, has warned members of the union to be of good behavior, even as he condemned the violence which attended the rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Lagos recently.

Fadahunsi, a founding member of the union in reaction to the violence in which MC Oluomo was stabbed by a faction, said he was shocked at what the Union has been turned into.

“I am shocked at what the Union we formed years back has been turned to. If I was not in Lagos to witness how the Union members disgraced and disrupted a campaign rally of a political party, I would have said it is untrue. The Lagos State Council members have tarnished the image and efforts of the founding fathers of the NURTW.”

Some members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Okoyong community of Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State were attacked by thugs suspected to be members of the All Progressive Congress (APC).

PDP leader in the area, Eka Etim Ekpa was set ablaze on Monday 21st January 2019, while a vehicle and other properties belonging to another PDP member, Mr Bassey Asuquo was equally vandalised on the same day at about 2pm by alleged APC thugs.

Images reveal a house was recently burnt down completely and an automobile badly vandalised with the windscreen destroyed, side windows equally broken and punctured tires.

A Chieftain of the PDP in the area told newsmen that Odukpani has always been a peaceful and strong hold of the Peoples Democratic party until recently when Elder Ekpo Okon a former state chairman of the PDP, who also hails from Okoyong community defected to the All Progressive Congress and emerged as deputy governorship candidate of the party in Cross River, since then intimidation and violence from the APC has taken the air in Odukpani local government area.

President Buhari has told Igbo leaders complaining about marginalisation not to do so as he has been fair in the appointments he has made so far in his administration. The president said this yesterday January 24th in Anambra state where he went for his presidential campaign.

Igbo leaders have over the years complained about the South East getting the least number of appointments since the Buhari-led government started.

Responding to this allegation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Obi of Onitsha, the president said about five members of the federal executive cabinet are from the region.

Internal wrangling occurred yesterday in the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (APCN) leading to the withdrawal of the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, from the race. But the party leadership accused her of using the platform to negotiate for ministerial position, threatening to drag her to court if she refused to return campaign donations made to her as its presidential candidate.

Ezekwesili became the ACPN presidential candidate last year and had been campaigning since then, including participating in last week’s presidential debate. She announced her withdrawal from the race in a statement yesterday by the spokesperson of her presidential campaign organisation, Ozioma Ubabukoh.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), however, said the withdrawal came late as the period allowed for substitution of candidates had elapsed. Ezekwesili, however, promised that “every money donated to the campaign and funds spent will be accounted for in the coming days.”

The former Education Minister said she was stepping aside from the presidential race to help build a coalition to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 16 election. Ezekwesili said the decision to withdraw from the race followed extensive discussions with Nigerians at home and the Diaspora. This decision, she said, followed extensive consultations with leaders from various walks of life across the country over the past few days. “I deem it necessary for me to focus on helping to build a veritable coalition to ensure a viable alternative to the #APCPDP in the forthcoming elections.

“It is my ardent belief that this broad coalition for a viable alternative has now become more than ever before, an urgent mission for and on behalf of Nigerian citizens. “I have, therefore, chosen to lead the way in demonstrating the much needed patriotic sacrifice for our national revival and redirection,” she said.

Jasmine Eiland, the woman who went viral after she livestreamed herself getting raped in an Atlanta nightclub (read here), has spoken out following the outrage that the incident generated.

In a live video shared to her Facebook wall, Jasmine corrected the notion that the guy seen raping her was the same person she took a picture with outside in the day.

Facebook has announced it will not accept political advertisements from outside Nigeria ahead of the upcoming general elections in a bid to prevent “foreign interference” around the polls

The new policy also takes effect in Ukraine, where presidential elections will be held in March. Political ad buyers in these countries must confirm their identity and location and their ads will be archived in an online library for seven years, the company said in a statement.

Facebook rolled out new measures to increase transparency about political advertising after data firm Cambridge Analytica obtained the personal data of as many as 87 million users ahead of the 2016 US elections.

UK authorities fined the social media giant with a £500,000 ($645,000) last October, saying that it failed to safeguard user data. In India, where general elections will be held in April, Facebook said it will begin to archive electoral ads in an online library starting February.

Presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Dr. ObyEzekwesili has promised to liberate 80 million Nigerians from the shackles of poverty if voted as president at the February 16th general elections. She said the nation requires immediate rescue from bad and incompetent leadership that brought massive and widespread poverty amongst the people.

The proposal came just as the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Prof. Kingsley Moghalu said reviving the Nigerian economy must start with a constitutional restructuring of the polity.

Similarly, the presidential candidate of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Mr. Fela Durotoye has pledged to revamp the economy by creating 30 million jobs to ensure that the teeming population of young Nigerians were gainfully employed within a short period.

The three candidates spoke at the 2019 presidential debate organized by the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) and the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) at the weekend in Abuja.

Ezekwesili said her party has a plan to lift 80 million Nigerians out of poverty and end the unfortunate stigma of Nigeria being the world capital of extreme poverty. “Our plan is to lift at least 80 million Nigerians out of poverty.

The way that we plan to do this is that when you look at Nigerians that are poor, they are poor because they earn below N700 per day. “What, therefore, needs to happen is that majority of Nigerians; over 60 per cent of them, would need to improve their productivity.
