A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has refused to vacate the interim forfeiture order granted on December 28, 2018 in respect of $2.8 million, seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Enugu Zonal Office.

EFCC arrests 2 persons with $2.8m cash in suitcases Why Wike’s re-election will be walkover —Okah ADVERTISING The EFCC, on December 20, seized the money from two persons at Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu.

The carriers were Ighoh Augustine and Ezekwe Emmanuel who were suspected to be money launderers.

While filing application for interim forfeiture on December 24, 2018, the Commission also filed an affidavit of urgency for the matter to be heard before a vacation Judge sitting in Port Harcourt. Justice A.T.

Mohammed, on December 28, ruled in favour of the Commission, as the court granted the order of interim forfeiture, pending the determination of the case.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Friday, January 4, 2019, Charles Ajuya, SAN, appeared for the Respondents and prayed the Court to vacate the interim order.

But the EFCC counsel, Anasoh Onyedikachi Henry, who filed eight paragraphs Affidavit of Facts stated the progress made by the Commission in the investigation. He also presented before the court, the newspaper publication in respect of the court order.

Conrad Njeru Karukenya,AKA Tiger Power, dared any African man to engage him in a strength contest. Nobody did.

Since then, he has been referred to as Kenya’s “strongest man” thanks to his extraordinary stunts such as breaking a six-inch nail with his finger.

But Tiger Power is no more. According to his brother Ansemoli Kathuri, the 72-year-old died on Tuesday night while receiving treatment at Consolota Mission Hospital, Kyeni, Embu County.

“He has been battling different ailments since 2015, the reason he had to quit powerlifting. He has had kidney failure, lung and heart complications. However, when we were taking him to the hospital on Monday, he was still a man of strength. He even called his children alerting them that he was going to hospital,” he told the Nation.

Tiger Power’s popularity rose when he let a Land Rover roll over him unscathed. In different instances, he pulled stunts such as lifting eight huge men without much effort and pulling a car with his teeth.

ASUU protracted strike may soon to be called off.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who gave the hint in Onitsha, Anambra State said that funds had been provided to meet most of the demands of the union.

He said the Federal Government would make necessary efforts to ensure that the strike comes to an end this January.

According to Ngige, the issues that made ASUU to embark on strike were based on agreement which the union entered into with the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan which the administration failed to implement before President Muhammadu Buhari took over power.

To the minister, the Buhari administration is labour-friendly and is always concerned about the welfare of the nation’s work force.

With about 15 minutes to the New Year, 12 lives were reportedly lost in a road crash on Monday near the Bola Ige International Market, Gbagi, along the new Ife-Ibadan Expressway in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Punch gathered that the victims were crushed to death by a truck coming from the Iwo Road area, which reportedly rammed into commercial buses and other vehicles by the entrance to the market.

Although eyewitness could not say if the truck had suffered break failure or if the affected buses were carelessly parked on the road, sources confirmed that two people initially survived the accident and were taken to a nearby hospital, while about 12 other passengers were said to have died immediately.

Apart from the commercial buses, a Toyota Camry and Nissan Micra cars were also said to have been crushed by the truck.

Sources said that many of the victims were going to churches for the crossover service in the Iyana-Agbala and Egbeda areas of the city.

The dead victims included a pregnant woman, identified simply as Mrs Funmilayo, who was said to be on her way to her in-laws’, a bus driver identified as ‘Orobo Baba Welder’, and many others who could not be identified as of the time of filing this report.

Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria on Tuesday attended the 2019 New Year Church Service in Zaria, Kaduna State, to strengthen inter-religious harmony and enhance national cohesion.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the group attended the service at St. Mary’s Parish Church, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State.

Commenting on behalf of the group, the leader of the delegation, Prof. Isa Mshelgaru of Building Department, Faculty of Environmental Design, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, said the visit was to strengthen relationship between the two faiths.

Mshelgaru said the visit was meant to further boost the bond of relationship between the followers of two faith toward fostering national unity.

He observed that going by the tenets of the two major religions in Nigeria, none of which preaches violence, adding that they both preach peace, love, unity and joy.

The don described Christians as the closest people to Islam but lamented that Nigerians were divided by selfish politicians who hide under religion to achieve personal desires.

“We are all created by one God, we must, therefore, endeavour to live together in peace with one another.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday urged Nigerian workers and the citizenry to brace up for a prolonged nationwide strike, as the ultimatum it issued to the Federal Government to implement the N30,000 new minimum wage for workers expired.

The warning came just as the labour movement lambasted state governors who were of the view that the implementation of N30,000 as new minimum wage was unrealistic and unsustainable. President of NLC, Comrade Ayuba Wabba, urged the governors who are opposed to the new wage to “throw in the towel and leave” governance to those who have the interest of workers at heart.

In a New Year message to Nigerians, Wabba said the Congress remained committed to the welfare of Nigerian worker’s and the quality of governance in the country. Wabba described 2018 as one of the most traumatic years for workers especially given the failure of government to enact and implement the new national minimum wage of N30, 000.

“This is in spite of the unimpeachable tripartite process leading to the agreement by the social partners on the new national minimum wage. It is unfortunate that the Federal Government is yet to transmit to the National Assembly an executive bill for the enactment of N30,000 as the new national minimum wage. “Government’s dillydallying on the issue has strained Government-Labour relations with a potential for a major national strike which could just be days away.

Boss Mustapha, secretary of the Government of the Federation led the Federal Government delegation to the burial of former President, Alhaji Shehu Shagari in Sokoto today.

Shagari, 93, was laid to rest in his hometown, Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto state at about 3.30 pm. The funeral prayer was led by Professor Shehu Galadanchi, former Vice Chancellor, Usmanu Dan Fodiyo University Sokoto.

Shagari’s corpse arrived at the Sultan Abubakar Airport, Sokoto earlier and was received by Governor Aminu Tambuwal, alongside members of the state executive council.
