The circumstances surrounding the assassination of a former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh (rtd), will soon be revealed as Special Forces of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have arrested two of the suspected killers. A security source in Nasarawa, who confirmed the breakthrough to New Telegraph in confidence yesterday, said: “Two out of the (suspected) killers have been arrested.

“They were arrested between Abuja and Nasarawa (State).” Some of the suspects have explained why Badeh was killed. It was learnt that the suspects collected N2.5 million ransom to release Badeh’s friend, Engr. Joseph. New Telegraph learnt that Operatives of the Inspector- General of Police, Ibrahim Idris’ Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT), arrested Badeh’s killers. The suspects were arrested between Sunday and Monday.

President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration is slow in fighting corruption because the system is slow.

The president said this when he received the Federal Capital Territory community, who paid him Christmas homage at his official residence on Tuesday in Abuja.

President Buhari, who apparently was reacting to those allegedly accusing his administration of being too slow in tackling the nation’s challenges, including `endemic corruption’ in the society, said: “It’s not Baba (Buhari) that is slow but it is the system.

“So, I am going by this system and I hope we will make it.”

The president announced that he would soon embark on aggressive campaign for the 2019 Presidential Election, saying that the campaign would start with visits to each of the six geo-political zones of the country.

According to him, the three areas of focus with which he campaigned in 2015 are still very relevant today, adding that he will continue to focus on the fight against corruption, tackling insecurity and improving the economy.

“We are watching the Independent National Electoral Commission very seriously and we are going out very soon; we will go from geo-political zone to geo-political zone, to remind the people of our promises in 2015.

“These three fundamental things include security, because you have to secure the country before you can govern it and talking about what we have done regarding securing the country, the people of the North-east know better.

“The three fundamental things we campaigned with are still very relevant.

“On improving the economy, which we are still going to explore, we have done well in agriculture, and those who embraced farming are not regretting it and we have also addressed unemployment and we are very lucky, through that we are now attaining food security.

“The third thing with which we will campaign is the issue of corruption.

“I told you what I did when I was in uniform but now when I have to go by this system (Democracy,) where people have to be arrested and then prosecuted, taken to court and then with evidence, we will collect back what they had taken illegally and for doing that, people are calling me Baba go slow.

“I am going slowly but whatever the case, I will not stop pointing fingers at those who have abused trust by taking money that does not belong to them.

“I will keep on trying to do my best for this country and get back what belongs to the country.”

President Muhammadu Buhari will not be allowed to use the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, for his campaign next Friday, the state government has said.

Mr Buhari is scheduled to visit Akwa Ibom on Friday to flag off his re-election campaign in the state.

The president’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), requested the use of the stadium for the campaign.

The state government, instead, has directed the president and the APC to make use of another stadium – the Uyo Township Stadium – which accommodates a far lesser number of people compared to the 30,000-capacity Godswill Akpabio stadium.

“The next season of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) is scheduled to begin on January 13, 2019. In view of this and the fixtures of home matches for Akwa United FC, it will be practically impossible to ‘regrass’ the stadium for pre-fixed matches, if used for non-sports activities, because of the nature of pressure that such events bring on the pitch,” the Commissioner for Sports in the state, Monday Uko, said in a statement issued on Friday.

“Additionally, The Maintenance Contractor (Julius Berger) had also advised that the present atmospheric conditions being very hostile to the pitch, the facility should not be used for non-sport activities during this harmattan period, so as to avoid inflicting long-term or irreversible damage to the grass on the football pitch,” Mr Uko said.

Mr Uko said the explanation became necessary because “political actors and commentators” in the state were trying to use the issue to pit the state government against President Buhari.

The commissioner went further to say that the annual state-sponsored Christmas Carol night in Uyo took place in the Uyo Township Stadium, instead of the earlier proposed Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, because of the same reason.

The Christmas Carol night was held on Friday.

The commissioner added, “The stadium from its inception has been under a maintenance contract with Julius Berger Construction Company. They operate all the sensitive and non-sensitive components of the facility.

“They had closed for the year and proceeded on vacation (as it has been their usual practice) and are due to resume on January 7, 2018. The implication of this is that the technical capacity required to activate the venue is currently unavailable, and this is not within our control.

A day after he flagged off the gubernatorial campaign of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, the state’s factional chairman of the party, Mr. Daniel Nwafor, has said National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole may do more harm than good to the party, particularly in Imo State.

He also alleged that Oshiomhole’s recent actions and inactions showed he does not mean well for the party.

Nwafor, who said party members in the state regretted facilitating Oshiomhole’s emergence as national chairman, accused him of being biased, insincere and parochial concerning issues at stake in the party, and that facts had proven that APC would fail, if Oshiomhole continued in his ways.

He said the party should cause Oshiomhole to tender unreserved apology to Okorocha for comments the former Edo State governor made at the flag-off of Senator Hope Uzodinma governorship campaign, and for attacking him on many occasions with unprintable words.

Meanwhile, an APC chieftain in Imo State, Barr. Kingsley Ononoju has berated incumbent governor, Rochas Anayo Okorocha for grounding the state’s economy.

Ahead of next year’s general elections, presidential candidate of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), Oby Ezekwesili, has given conditions for violence-free polls.
Speaking yesterday alongside other presidential candidates at an event organised by Presidential Summit Centre (PSC) in collaboration with Forum of Presidential Candidates (FPC) towards peaceful elections, Ezekwesili listed signing of amended electoral bill and non-interference of security personnel during the polls.

She cautioned that a repeat of military intimidation and harassment of voters, as it happened in Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections would not be accepted by Nigerians during the elections. She, therefore, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to listen to the court of public opinion and address lingering electoral issues ahead of the polls.

“There was a peace accord. In our own case, we signed, not because it was a ceremony but because we believed in it.“We want Nigerians to send a strong message to President Buhari that he must exhibit exemplary leadership quality that will ensure our election does not end up taking the country and the people down.

“And the way to do that is to listen to the court of public opinion, and that is that the country would want to have the best electoral act possible, and the way to ensure we have it is for the President to sign the electoral amendment bill 2018 into law.

When Nigeria’s Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister Audu Ogbeh launched the National Gender Action Plan (NGAP) on Agriculture in October, the idea was to upgrade women from the realm of subsistence farming to medium scale and commercial farming.

The figures provided by the minister at the launch showed that Nigeria has 95% subsistence farmers, 50% of whom are women. Beyond this, women farmers in Nigeria have to contend with unequal access to land, insecurity, cultural practices and pseudo-religion dogmas.

“Despite the huge labour investment of women, productivity is low and they often have limited roles in decision making on the farms. Lack of ownership of land and other productive assets due to existing social norms has created a significant negative impact on the family income and the nation’s GDP at large,’’ said Nigeria Country Director, African Development Bank, Mr Ousmane Dore.

Agriculture is the cornerstone of the Nigerian economy, regarded as the largest sector which employs two-thirds of the nation’s human capital thereby providing the major source of livelihood for most citizens.

The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sunny Echono, said women are the focal point of agricultural production, processing, marketing and utilisation in the country.

“Women supply 70 percent of agricultural labour; 50 percent of animal husbandry related activities and 60 percent of food processing, yet they have access to only 20 percent of available agricultural resources.”

Ekiti State House of Assembly yesterday suspended indefinitely the chairmen and councillors of the 16 local councils of the state over alleged corruption and nepotism.

The House said the chairmen were suspended to allow for unimpeded but thorough investigation of the finances of the third tier of government, which it said, left much to be desired.

The lawmakers said that appropriate sanction awaits any of the chairmen or appointees found culpable in the alleged misappropriation of public funds.

Briefing newsmen at the Assembly Complex after the plenary session, the leader of Legislative Business and Chairman, House Committee on Information, Mr. Gboyega Aribisogan, said there should be reform in the administration of the councils.He said: “There is the urgent need for forensic audit of account of the local councils in the state. Appropriate sanction must be meted to any erring elected official culpable in the misappropriation and diversion of public funds.”

Meanwhile, a source close to the suspended chairmen told The Guardian that the seven-man standing committee demanded N500,000 each from the 16 of them, totalling N8 million.

The source said the suspended chairmen allegedly sourced the money privately since political office holders have not been paid since the inception of the new administration in the state.When asked by the reporter to confirm the allegation, Aribisogan said that he was not aware of such development and that the allegation was not true.
