raumdeuter: That was just 1 of 3 goals. Ivanovic was partly responsible for that second goal and I am asking, How is he more culpable than Matic, Mikel, the 2 CB Fabregas and others who had defensive duties Bros I'm talking about 5 games, you're trying to focus on one game. The question you should be asking is, why did Everton chose to focus their attacks on the right flank for the first two goals? In the description for the the first goal you posted, you can see that Naismith commited Ivanovic, and allowed his Full back to score. Look at the picture again and ask yourself what Ivanovic is doing so far in field, he's practically at Centre Back. This thing is very simple to see. When your defender is the 2nd most dribbled player in the team, when the majority of the opponents chances and crosses keep coming from the area he's supposed to be defending....you have to ask what he is doing...and why? |

I'm not exactly sure what your point is Dayo...
It seems like you dont seem to understand the idea 'Ivanovic being the weakest link' and 'Chelsea's backline being abit rubbish' are not mutually exclusive.
Mikel was useless against Everton, hence he was the first to be hooked.
But the 1st 2 goals came from Ivanovic's flank.
Even the website you're quoting has this to say
'With no danger directly behind him, Ivanovic could and should have closed Naismith down quicker to try and prevent the shot.' |

because it doesn't make sense to me that just 1 player would be responsible for a club to collapse defensively. What makes a defence work or fail goes beyond just one player
Do you think replacing Ivanovic in those games would have meant a better result?
I hope he gets injured or benched so we can put this theory to test If you put Azpilicueta there....traffic on that lane will slow down considerably. |

raumdeuter: Attached are the performances of the players this season vs Last season. focus on defensive players and core defence attributes
Look at those numbers and tell which of the defensive players have covered themselves in glory? for us to single out Ivanovic
Why are teams who barely get 4 shots vs Chelsea last season suddenly getting almost double digits now? I don't know why you are so desperate to prove that Ivanovic is not the weakest link in that defence. Your stats are focusing on what Ivanovic did...the problem is the weakness on his wing stems from what he didn't do Can you tackle someone you can't catch? Ivanovic has gone from being dribbled 0.4 times per game to being dribbled 1.8 times per game. The only person that has been dribbled more this season is Fabregas. Ivanovic is tackling 2.2 times per game, yet has conceded 28 chances in 5 games. Naismith's second goal is a fantastic example of Ivanovic not what he should be doing. Naismith was shooting and Ivanovic turned his back....Sqwuaka won't show you that No amount of intercaption stats can mask the fact that opposing wingers and fullbacks were able to cross the ball over 60 times from Ivanovic's position in just 5 games. I don't know why you just don't seem to understand that even if 1 million people are rubbish, there is always least rubbish and a last egbe Ivanovic is that number 1 million. |

Pataki: Listen, we are all students of this game. I learn from your team, and it is with any other team out there. No need to start getting all defensive and edgy over a football discourse.
Arsenal has the highest number of chances created, does that equate to the highest numbers of goals scored in the league? That Ivanovic's wing has the highest chances and crosses conceeded, also implies what? Or am I getting you wrong that highest number of chances and crosses equates to Chelsea's defeat which you are indirectly pinning on Ivanovic? This is very easy compute. If most chances created against Chelsea are coming from Ivanovic's flank, then it means that the right flank is the weakest. |

raumdeuter: Do you see Terry's drop? Its even higher than Ivanovic. I'm not a fan of leaving the main issue and blaming the symptoms
Last year teams were not even getting to your defence. How many teams get 4 chances vs Chelsea in a game. Right now they are not only getting chances they are scoring goals. 16 goals conceded already
Defence in football doesnt start with defenders alone thats why Barca doesnt concede a lot, This I am sure isnt due to the number of tackles they make.
When Moreno was running rampage, what was Chelsea Right winger doing? its either he isnt keeping the pressure up at the top
last year you all were crediting Matic for shielding the defence from pressure, How is he doing his shielding job nowadays Read that article I posted again very well. The article is based on whoscored rating. Whoscored rating also factors in red cards, and goals scored. I'm making my decision on raw performance numbers. |

Pataki: Mostly from the center. I don't want to follow this bandwagon reasoning that Ivanovic is the weakest link in the Chelsea defence. For example, against ManCity, where did most of the attack spring from? A chain is as strong as its weakest link. Chamberlain did not score his goal from the weakness of Ivanovic.
The only outstanding player in that Chelsea defence is Cahill. Every other player is just non-different from Ivanovic. Oga please focus on your team and leave our team to us. The chances and crosses conceded stat from Ivanovic's wing is not just the highest in the team....it's the highest in the whole damn league. Look it up. Pataki: Of course, it is audible to the blind man and visible to the deaf that Chelsea has numerous problems in the defence. But to single out Ivanovic is clearly wrong.
As I once stated here to nitlad, Begovic has made 15 saves so far in 216 minutes of play. Compared to Cech in Arsenal who has made 16 saves in 450 minutes of play.
Chelsea defence is leaking immensely. Had Chelsea acquired a useless deputy for Courtois, we might have been looking at a higher record of goals conceeded. Mourinho is a strategist in defence. If he is not getting it right, then I think the biggest culprit starts with him. Oga where do you think Chelsea's defence is leaking from the most? |

raumdeuter: You see this isnt only about Ivanovic. and even he isnt the worst culprit The list is based on their drop from their scores last year. The higher the score, the more drastic the form. Our problem this year hasn't really been goalscoring. It's been defending, and Ivanovic is the biggest culprit in that area. |

Chelsea's Start - The Five Biggest Culprits In terms of finger-pointing, there aren’t enough digits to adequately place the blame for Chelsea’s start to the season. No Chelsea player who has featured more than once this season has a better average rating than last time out. WhoScored.com look at the five guiltiest culprits…
It’s been a remarkable start to the season as far for Chelsea, but not in the scintillating way that they began the campaign en route to the title last year.
The Blues have picked up just four points from their opening five matches, with Saturday’s defeat to Everton meaning that they have already lost as many times as they did in the entirety of the 2014/15 campaign. At this stage last season Mourinho’s men had scored 16 goals – down to seven this time around – while the 12 that they have conceded is the most in the league.
In terms of finger-pointing, there aren’t enough digits to adequately place the blame.
Indeed, there is not a single Chelsea player to have featured more than once this season who has a better average rating than last time out. WhoScored.com look at the five guiltiest culprits…
5) Diego Costa – WhoScored.com rating drop = 0.72 This time last year Diego Costa had made an astounding start to life in English football, scoring seven goals from his first four appearances having had 14 shots at goal.
Twelve months on, and after five matches this season the Costa has scored just once, firing off fewer shots in total (nine) than he had registered on target (10) in the opening four games of last season.
Costa ended the previous campaign with 20 league goals to his name in just 26 appearances, with a stunning conversion rate of 26.3% and shot accuracy of 48.7%. With said figures currently down at 11.1% and 33.3% respectively,
Chelsea’s star striker is nowhere near his best. Whereas last year he channeled his aggression, this year Costa just looks angry.
4) Branislav Ivanovic – WhoScored.com rating drop = 0.90 Having been such a solid performer in years gone by, the reduction of Branislav Ivanovic to a comedy figure has been shocking.
Clearly highlighted as a weakness in the side by those capable of exploiting the Serbian’s decreasing mobility, and perhaps more worryingly work-rate, it’s a mystery how the 31-year old has kept his place in the side.
Of all outfielders to start all five of their team’s league matches this season, Ivanovic has the lowest WhoScored.com rating in the league (6.35).
The most significant difference in Ivanovic’s stats is that he has been dribbled past 1.8 times per game this season, compared to just 0.4 last. It’s surely only a matter of time before Mourinho loses patience in his newly-appointed vice-captain.
3) Cesc Fabregas – WhoScored.com rating drop = 0.91 Just ahead of the lumbering Ivanovic, Cesc Fabregas’ thoroughly underwhelming displays have not gone unnoticed by the footballing public. He, like Costa, began life at Stamford Bridge in emphatic fashion, pulling the strings in central midfield from the off.
Fabregas is barely influencing matches at the moment seeing his rating drop to 6.71; that’s exactly the same as Costa.
The starkest difference in his play is undoubtedly his chance creation, having registered a league high of 18 assists last season.
With the vast majority of those coming before the turn of the year, Fabregas is now averaging just 1.6 key passes per game – from 2.8 last season – and has not registered an assist. His figures for pass accuracy, dribbles and tackles have all also dropped.
2) John Terry – WhoScored.com rating drop = 1.02 Captain fantastic last season, John Terry has been far less impressive so at the beginning of what may well be his last season at the club.
Having played every minute of the previous title-winning campaign, Terry was subbed off at half-time in the crucial match with City, leading to reports of a rift with the manager, and sent off the weekend after.
As a consequence, the 34-year old is currently Chelsea’s lowest-rated player (6.01), with only three players to start as many matches garnering a worse score in the entire division. With averages for aerial duels won (2.6 to 1), clearances (5.7 to 2.3) and interceptions per game (0.9 to 0.3) all less than half what they were last season, Terry just isn’t leading by example.
1) Eden Hazard – WhoScored.com rating drop = 1.02 Any player who performed so incredibly well in the previous season is likely to be most susceptible to a big drop in rating, but Eden Hazard has been a comparative ghost in Chelsea’s early games. WhoScored.com’s highest-rated player last season (7.96) is sitting 104th of the 275 players to feature at least three times in 2015/16, with a solitary assist to his name.
The Belgian has seen his shots (2.1 to 1.2) and dribbles per game (4.8 to 3) drop off substantially, and he isn’t pulling his weight either. Hazard has made a total of one tackle and interception combined – committing five fouls in the process – having chipped in with 50 in 2014/15. Not firing on all cylinders is one thing, but not mucking in another entirely. |

UniqueGem: One thing that baffles me on this thread is how everyone is on Rooneys case but no one have realised how lacklustre Mata has been in Man Utd. The Guy hasn't done anything spectacular for us. He is just like Wayne Rooney(of this season), each time chances are put on a platter for him, he manages to miss(doesn't even shoot at all). The dude for me is a huge disappiontment and a total let down. Rooney and Mata should be left to drag for the number 10 position, that way-one of them is bound to have sense. Martial should be starting every match abeg. He's a complete package; nice hold up play, strong, dribbles, opens up space, available for a pass, always moving forward, and can shoot too.

Tval: Chelsea Football Club will be raising money for Syrian refugees when they take the pitch against Maccabi Tel-Aviv on Wednesday. The Blues are joining many of Europe's top clubs in their support of Uefa's '90 minutes of hope' campaign, which is designed to help refugees obtain education and psychological care.
The Blues will donate one Euro from every ticket sold, which should total somewhere in the vicinity of £42,000 from a sold out Stamford Bridge. In addition, the club will be auctioning off the players' matchday shirts, which should eliminate the potential controversy of a halftime shirt swap.
The fundraising won't be limited to this Wednesday's match, as the club has announced that they'll continue to raise money this weekend against Arsenal. As with the Maccabi Tel-Aviv clash, one Euro per ticket sold will be donated, and the club will hold a 'bucket campaign' in an attempt to raise additional funds for the cause. That's interesting....considering that many of Maccabi's fans will hate Syrians. |

raumdeuter: I would start with your City reference. Looking at City who are the major difference, Sagna for Zabaleta, Kolarov for Clichy. These 2 internal competition have brought out more from the players. What do you think Zab, Otamendi and Clichy would be doing in training right now? Probably killing themselves and in game days what would Kolarov, Mangala and Sagna be doing probably staying on their toes because any slip up someone is waiting on the sidelines Sagna Kolarov Zabaleta Clichy were all there last season. Why did the competition not bring out the best of them last season? Kolarov was a bit of a Joke last season. Sagna did not even get a look in. If not for Zabaleta and Clichy's early season injuries those two might not even see shirt. Kompany and Mangala were already beastin before otamendi was signed. It's not any nebulous competition that has caused Kolarov and Sagna to have at least one assist each. If any thing, their positions are quite safe for now as both their competitors are injured or just coming back from injury Check Chelsea, Who is the realistic replacement for your pack 4 of Iva-Cahill-Terry and Azpi? Just Zouma. At least 2-3 of your defenders are underperforming yet no one to keep them on their toes. Also talking about City. Yaya had a dip in form last yr and you dont expect that to continue. What happens on the field starts in training. When Navas sees Sterling and De bruyne in training who are better rated than him, do you think he would still be playing those blind crosses? Navas still missed empty post this weekend and while Sterling has a goal and assist, he has looked quite average these days. But what those two lack in ability, they make up for in DESIRE. And that is what is keeping City going right now...you can see across the pitch how much these guys want it.Pressing high everywhere, tracking back when needed(Even Yaya Toure) I've see Sterling intercept a ball at Right Back this season. Messi and Ronaldo while being Marquee wouldnt achieve much without the backup. If there was no Rakitic last season or Di maria upper season both messi and Ronaldo might be trophyless in those seasons. Its someone behind the Ronaldo and Messi that makes them work
When bayern won the CL Ribery was the standout performer but when Javi martinez was not there, Ribery would do his own and our defence would still leak and waste all his effort. Ronaldo did his part last season scoring lots of goals but the moment Modric went down That was it and his 60 goals were wasted Having a multiple Balon d'or winner in your squad significantly boosts your prospects of dominating in Europe even if the rest of the team are rubbish. Having a fantastic team AND a balon d'or winner in your squad improves your chances even more. Clever Scouting alone cannot rectify that Between 2000 and 2010 Bayern had 1 CL, Porto had 1 CL, Chelsea had none. If you were to analyse as at 2009 which was the more likely team to win the CL who would you pick? As at today if you are to say who would likely win a CL between Bayern, Madrid Inter and Chelsea who would rank top and who would be below(Note all have 1 CL each in the past 10yrs) A Prediction is not a fact. You could argue that Bayern's model may have improve their chances, but history will remember that model as ultimately achieving only the same amount of success as Porto and Chelsea between 2004 and 2015. That is a fact. While its easy to pick on Ivanovic I doubt thats the only problem. Are you saying If you replaced Only Ivanovic you would have won all your games?
Chamberlains goal in the shield didnt come from Ivanovic, Naismiths 3rd goal didnt come from Ivanovic. he is just a convenient target right now.
Teams analyze every team. Do you think they were just analyzing Chelsea and not analyzing Man City? or not Analyzing Barca? Ivanovic is not the only target. Ivanovic is the MAIN target Chelsea has conceded 64 crosses from the Right Flank this season. That is the highest in the league Chelsea has conceded 28 chances down the Right Flank this season. That is the highest in the league These are clear facts. Everybody is looking for Ivanovic when Chelsea comes to town. |
