Politics › Re: The Scandal Of Census Figures by nitlad: 11:05pm On Oct 29, 2012
Prof Corruption: THIS brings me to the 1973
census result. I have examined
this result from several
standpoints which times does
not permit me to elaborate upon
here, and as a result, I have been irresistibly impelled to the
conclusion that the so-called
ROVISIONAL FIGURES are
absolutely unreliable and should
be totally rejected by the
Supreme Military Council. In the first place, based on UNESCOs
estimate in its Statistical
Yearbook 1972, at 2.5 per cent
growth rate, our estimated
population for 1973 should be
59.63 million. The 79.76 million population, which we are now
trying to bestow upon ourselves
is, therefore, 20.40 million more
than the estimate based on the
UNESCO projection. By
comparison, the U.N. and UNESCO estimates gave us 46.324 million
in 1963 as against 55.670
million.
In 1963, therefore, we
exceeded the UNESCO estimate
only by 9.34 million; whereas in 1973 we exceeded the U.N. and
UNESCO estimate by 20.40
million. It follows that, if the
1963 figures are nearest the
truth, then the 1973 figures are
furthest from the truth. In the second place, during the
intercensal periods of 1931 to
1953 and 1953 to 1963, the
trend in inter-regional
population movements showed
that the South was gaining steadily at the expense of the
North. In 1931, the population
of the North was 58 per cent of
the total for the country, in 1953
it was 55 per cent; and in 1963 it
was 54 per cent. I hasten to add that it does not even require
arithmetical calculations such as
these to demonstrate that the
South has, population wise since
1931, been gaining steadily at
the expense of the North: the trend is visible for everyone in
Nigeria to see. And having
regard to the existing economic
and social circumstances of the
country, this trend is not only
natural and normal, but also necessary and welcome.
The 1973 PROVISIONAL census
figures have, however,shown a
complete and sharp reversal of
this normal trend. During the
intercensal period of 1963 to 1973, the North has moved from
54 per cent of total population to
65 per cent. Unless it can be
established that there was gross
undercounting of the North in
1963 as compared with the rest of the country, which from all
available evidence was certainly
not the case, what the 1973
provisional result necessarily
implies, therefore, among other
things, is that many more Southerners had moved to the
North between 1963 and 1973
than the other way round. This is
obviously not the case. On the
contrary, as we all know,
population movement from the North to the South was greater
and more massive in the last ten
years than ever before. In the
third place, the average
population growth rate for
Africa as a whole is 2.7 per cent, whilst the growth rates in West
African countries range between
1.9 per cent and 3 per cent. The
1973 provisional census result
for Nigeria, however, indicates
that the range of growth rates in our 12 states is between 0.62
per cent in the Western State and
7.04 per cent in the North-
Eastern State. This just cannot be
true. And for anyone seriously to
suggest that it can in the face of the visible, tangible relative
factors for population growth in
the different States in the
country, is to deny ordinary
commonsense to the Nigerian
populace, and to inflict grievous wounds both on our body
politic and on the feelings of
thinking Nigerian citizens.
In the fourth place, the
provisional figures have revived,
with greater vividness and starker reality, the erstwhile fear
of permanent domination of one
group of Nigerians by another.
According to the provisional
figures, the population of North-
East and Kano States alone is almost equal to that of the South
put together. And if the utterly
false trends of population
growths in the States, indicated
by the provisional figures, were
contrived and repeated in 1983 - and one cannot now see, if the
provisional figures are allowed
to stand, why a repeat
performance should not occur in
1983; if the same trends were
repeated in 1983 by the same contrivances, then 74 per cent of
all Nigerians would be living in
the North, ten years from now!
The fear and dreadful
forebodings which the
provisional figures struck into the minds of many Nigerians
have been further heightened,
on reflection, by the steady
erosion of the powers of the
States in favour of the Federal
Government. A close analysis of the situation will reveal that the
country is already sliding back to
a unitary form of Government
behind an imposing facade of
federalism. And as we all know,
under a unitary form of Government, by whatever name
called and no matter how many
ineffective States there are in the
country, whichever party
controls the Central Government
controls all, and dominates all. By Obafemi Awolowo
Quite a revealing exposé this is.
This goes a long way to show that this fraud has been consistent and going on unabated for donkey years. Sometimes I wonder where OBJ's loyalty lies. A fraud of this magnitude is going on against your own people and you couldnt do anything to buck the ugly trend. Shame on you Baba Iyabo.

Obinoscopy: That was the motive behind my volunteering to argue against the motion that it was a historical mistake. I know it would be difficult to argue against the motion but I chose to do it nevertheless. I did it not to win, after all even if I had won the debate that won't make Nigerians believe me, neither will it make 1914 amalgamation not to be a historical mistake. If you ask me, whether its a historical mistake or not is purely subjective. Its a thing of the mind. We are what we chose to believe.

I know Nigeria is really backward and I know one of the reasons is due to ethnic bigotry and nepotism. However I'm of the view that these ethnic bigotry is masterminded by corrupt leaders whose sole aim is to cling to power either by hook or by crook.

I believe Nigeria can work if we choose to make it work despite our ethnic diversities. If our leaders can give us good governance and enshrine social justice and if tolerance can be preached among Nigerians, Nigeria will be great. We need to be progressives and not retrogressives. The earlier we begin thinking in this direction, the better for all of us.
I couldn't more.
I think its safe to say and we can all agree that the biggest problem we have in this country is poor leadership?
I want to go deeper than that. I want to go back to the system that produces these horrible leaders we are yoked with perennially. I want us all to look back into the society; SOCIAL MALADY ; the rotten stench in every strata of our society is beyond words. That is our albatross in this nation.
I dont want to believe that the role of leadership is so cursed that every person that assumes it must be a disaster! Rather the society that keeps churning out generation after generation of these leaders,(these leaders are not alliens they rose to their positions from the same society as we all) who always seem to be hellbent and doing their best to outfox previous administsations in becoming the worst ever should be checked an re-evaluated. That kind of society needs some serious re-engineering. Starting from the family level right up to the highest strata of our socio-political life.

About the bolded, Obi mate, when an overwhelming majority as is the case with amalgamation strongly believes, that is no longer a subjective belief as you put it, that is a fact.
Yes we should never have been brought together; whoever brought up that idea should be shot; we would be better off on our own; some people are reaping where they did not sow; bla bla bla... All these are true, but now that we are in this 'mess' so to say, what do we do? How do we make the best of this precarious situation we find ourselves in? The answer lies in a truly transparent and honest SOVEREIGN NATIONAL CONFERENCE coupled with serious and rigorous SOCIAL RE-ENGINEERING. Only then shall we be able to make headway in solving the problems plaguing OUR LAND and also fully utilize latent potentials.

xwolverine: Stop deceiving yourself with the myth of KGB. KGB ended with the USSR,in today’s Russia, the KGB doesn’t exist. The KGB was abolished in 1991, soon after its Chairman, Vladimir Kryuchkov, led the failed August 1991 coup against Mikhail Gorbachev. And it was officially renamed FSB. what Russia has now are groups of agencies FSB, SVR, and GRU, all carrying out the responsibilities of the erstwhile KGB but with lesser autonomy and powers. This directly affected its effectiveness.
The fact that I mentioned SVR should have informed that I'm well aware that the KGB is now defunct and the existence of its new offsprings. I was only using KGB as a metonym for Russian intelligence agencies.
Underrate Russia at your own peril!

Reference: They don't have to fly F-15's into Russia to take out any capabilities there. They have the very best covert ops program in the world and have assasinated russian scientists and sabotaged russian industrial plants before. An open/military style attack is just a statement in the intelligence community that folks in Iran and more importantly the US will understand.
That's not entirely correct. If anything, the KGB and SVR are equally capable of sabotaging and stealing the lead on the West's military capabilities through their ever effective espionage.
The KGB is arguably the most effective information gathering organization.

Chelsea lodge complaints over alleged Clattenburg comments.
The Blues accuse the 37-year-old,
who showed their side two red
cards during Sunday's defeat to
Manchester United, of
"inappropriate language" towards a
pair of their players.
Chelsea have lodged an official complaint to the Premier League over alleged comments from referee Mark
Clattenburg during their 3-2 defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.
The Blues are accusing the 37-year-
old of using "inappropriate language"
towards two of their players.
"We have lodged a complaint to the
Premier League match delegate with
regards to inappropriate language used by the referee and directed at
two of our players in two separate
incidents in today's match," a club
spokesman announced after the
game.
"The match delegate will pass the complaint to the Football Association.
"We will make no further comment at
this time."
The Professional Game Match Officials
Board, governing body for referees,
said in a statement that it is "aware of the allegations and they are being
treated with the utmost seriousness.
"Mark will cooperate fully and
welcomes the opportunity for the facts
to be established. No further comment
will be made until the matter has been properly investigated."
Clattenburg sent off two Chelsea
players, Branislav Ivanovic and
Fernando Torres, during the match at
Stamford Bridge, with home manager Roberto Di Matteo laying the blame for
their loss at his feet .
The Serbian defender was dismissed
for a professional foul on Ashley
Young before the £50 million striker
received a second yellow card for
what the official interpreted as a dive under the challenge of Jonny Evans.
Obi is yet to associate the human factor with his narratives of brotherhood and progress.

In 1914 certain ethnic groups in Nigeria, Yoruba is a good example, were already far evolved above and beyond the stages of development in East or North and the amalgamation was a retardation on the natural abilities and destiny of their sociocultural evolution.

While certain groups may have been helped into enrichment and evolution by the resulting aggregation if lands and peoples, the opposite is true for theYorubas. Amalgamation promised sovereingty and shared pool or joint ownership. Joint ownership of what, I ask? How can you be promised sovereingty over a land whose ownership has not changed hands?

To those who before amalgamation had never tasted sovereingty or had no social ideals and a robust philosophy and creed for moving their people forward, yes those people today have what they otherwise wihout the aid of the 1914 contract would ever have. Those who had it ended up loosing it and their momentum in the resulting madness and chaos of Nigerian nationhood.

Lets separate the corn from the chaff......the bottom line of SNC rests on that dissatisfaction with the loss of self identity for substitution with joint identity.
All I'm saying about Obi is that, he was stellar even though he chose a part that should have easily eaten him up. Don't take that away from the lad.
While it is true that amalgamation stunted the development of certain groups, like the Yoruba Nation example you gave, I'm not convinced we couldnt have made the best of the situation for the benefit of all.
Negro, do you seriously believe this nation will not work unless we return to pre 1914 status quo? I personally believe we can but I dont think we will.

Followed the debate yesteday, and I've gotta say it was awesome, (kudos to the debaters Obinoscopy and Katsumoto. Top blokes they are). And it was an excellently executed exercise too(give the kudos to Jarus for that). A few things could be done better though.
I thought Obinoscopy came out as the more spontaneous debater in light of his arguments and responses to rebuttals and questions while Katsumoto was well loaded for this (dude sure knows his onions).
Obinoscopy's perfomance is all the more surprising given that his was a side that on the face of it (at least that was my thinking before this debate) you would be hard pressed to find valid points. Yet he gave a masterclass from what presumably should be a doomed corner. Your reference to Somalia was particularly striking!
Kats inspite of your eggheadous perfomance (lol if there is anything like that), I'm not sure you succeeded in undeniably tying any of the problems bedevilling this nation to the 1914 Amalgamation throughout the duration of the debate. I stand to be corrected on this, perhaps I missed it.
I personally believe amalgamating the Northern and Southern Protectorates is/was a historical tragedy, but this debate made me realise that the problems in this country didn't necessarily stem from amalgamation.
All in all, it was an insightfully knowledgeable and exhilaratingly brilliant exercise!

The old fhucktard is neva going to set foot in any jail whatsoever. He is free until a final appeal verdict. There are still two superior courts to appeal through, which may likely overturn this ruling, as has always being the case in his previous convictions. The appeal process would take years which would nullify the case through the statutes of limitations before a final verdict is ever reached.

Business › Apple Profits Miss Forecasts Amid Slower iPad Sales by nitlad(op): 7:00am On Oct 26, 2012
Apple's fourth quarter profits
missed Wall Street forecasts as iPad
sales fell short of analysts'
predictions.
Profits in the last three months were $
8.2bn (£5bn), up from $6.6bn last
year, with revenues of $36bn, up 27%
. Apple sold 26.9 million iPhones in the
quarter to 29 September, higher than
forecast, and 14 million iPads. The slower iPad sales was put down to
consumers delaying purchases on
rumours that Apple was launching an
iPad Mini, which was unveiled on
Tuesday. "We were happy with the 14 million
iPad sales in the quarter. It exceeded
our expectations," said Apple finance
director Peter Oppenheimer. "But as
the summer went on, the rumours
were pretty rampant about the iPhone and iPad." Apple shares fell 1.5% in after hours
trading on Wall Street, although
analysts said the lower numbers
should not be of too much concern. Shaw Wu, analyst at Sterne Agee, said:
"The iPhones came in better than
expected. The shortfall was on the
iPad for two reasons. There was a
pause on the iPad ahead of the iPad
Mini. Everyone was waiting for that. Then they replaced the third
generation iPad with the fourth
generation." "They stopped shipping the third
generation to the channels. So it was
customers waiting for the iPad mini
and drawing down the third
generation." 'Very confident' Attention will now turn to the iPhone
5, which has been on sale for nine
days, as the market enters the run-up
to the key Christmas spending season. Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, said in a statement : "We're entering this holiday season
with the best iPhone, iPad, Mac and
iPod products ever, and we remain
very confident in our new product
pipeline." Apple said that it sold 4.9 million
Macintosh computers in the latest
quarter, a 1% rise from the same
three-month period last year.
However, sales of iPods fell 19% to 5.3
million, according to the earnings report. The fourth quarter figures took
Apple's profits for the year to $41.7bn,
up 45% on 2011, with revenues of $
156.5bn, a 61% increase.
