Webmasters › Kim Dotcom Reveals Mega To Replace Megaupload File-Sharing Site by nitlad(op): 7:12pm On Nov 01, 2012 |
1 November 2012 Last updated at 11:04 Kim Dotcom has announced plans for Mega, a service to replace his shut down file-sharing website Megaupload.Mega is expected to use encryption methods which will mean only users will know what they are uploading. It will be decided in March whether Mr Dotcom should be extradited from New Zealand to the US to face charges relating to copyright theft. The 38-year-old said he would launch Mega on 20 January 2013 - a year to the day since his arrest. By keeping details of files uploaded on Mega secret from the site's administrators, Mr Dotcom said he believed this would mean the site was not in violation of US laws. "The new Mega will not be threatened by US prosecutors," he said. "The new Mega avoids any dealings with US hosters, US domains and US backbone providers and has changed the way it operates to avoid another takedown." Announcing the new site on Twitter, Mr Dotcom said the holding page - hosted at Me.ga - was already getting "millions" of hits. He said many of the visits were from US authorities themselves, tweeting: "All FBI agents pressing reload hahaha... We see their IP addresses. LOL!!!" Exact details of the encryption methods on the upcoming site have not been released. However, it appears to look to shift responsibility for unlawful content onto the users, rather than the site's owners. "In the past, securely storing and transferring confidential information required the installation of dedicated software," a message on Mega's holding page said. "The new Mega encrypts and decrypts your data transparently in your browser, on the fly. You hold the keys to what you store in the cloud, not us." In an interview with Reuters, Mr Dotcom suggested that content owners might even get direct access to users' uploaded files "if they agree not to make us responsible for actions of users". The site's servers will not be hosted in the US, Mr Dotcom added. A page on the Mega site makes a plea to encourage more investors for the service. "We have raised sufficient funds to cover the launch," the message reads, "but we would like to provide Mega free of charge for as long as possible." Mr Dotcom had previously released details of a sister service, Megabox, which will offer music-related downloads. Unlawful raid Mr Dotcom - formerly Kim Schmitz - currently resides in his New Zealand mansion which was raided by local authorities at the start of this year. The raid and seizure of assets was later deemed illegal by a New Zealand court. It was also later ruled that intelligence agencies had illegally spied on Mr Dotcom - an incident which drew an apology from New Zealand Prime Minister John Key. "We failed to provide that appropriate protection for him," he said. "It is the GCSB's [Government Communications Security Bureau] responsibility to act within the law, and it is hugely disappointing that in this case its actions fell outside the law." If extradited and convicted in the US, Mr Dotcom faces up to 20 years in prison. www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-20165657 |

Autero: What is delusional or misplaced about a set of people agitating 4 what they feel is right?, demonstrations r meant to enlighten the unenlightened about what the struggle is for and it can take place anywhere in the world or everywhere in the world simultaneously so im sure Lagos was chosen because Lagos is the commercial nerve center of the country plus its igbo population density. There's really nothing wrong here as long as its peaceful Yet another saphead from the delusional posse of zombies! |

Princephelar: And why will pastors not stop saying the same words John the baptist said all through his life time 'repent for the kingdom of God is at hand'. Does that make the gospel redundant? And how many years ago have you been hearing this 'aids is real' and did that stop people from unprotected or premarital sex? Issues like these need to be discussed as long as there are people in them out there... Seriously WTF?! Waheva bloke. |

aribisala0: There is no need to call names because of differences in opinions. I share the view that English language is a destructive influence in Nigeria and Africa generally.Northern Nigeria has a slightly different story. It is a mistake to believe MOST Nigerians speak or understand English. Anyone who is familiar with Northern Nigeria knows this is simply not true. Quite often you hear Nigerians boasting to other Africans about Achebe or Wole Soyinka. Here is some food for thought; Achebe has been translated into dozens of languages apparently but has his "Things Fall Apart " been translated into Igbo, could it possibly be better appreciated in any other language than Igbo?Has it been translated into ANY African language. No one is saying we should not learn English but we should not "shame" ourselves for shortcomings like "Shina Peters and his Soonest Recover". We get that all the time from many other Nationalities. What is more shameful is our shortcomings in OUR OWN languages and our clear desire to commit linguistic suicide in the name of "CIVILIZATION". YES LEARN ENGLISH BUT LEARN YOUR OWN LANGUAGE FIRST AND MORE any contrary practice is self destructive. IT IS QUITE POSSIBLE FOR A YORUBA MAN TO BE CIVILIZED AND EDUCATED WITHOUT A WORD OF ENGLISH Sadly fewer and fewer of our people believe this and that is the nub of the matter; by default we have decided our languages should die without considering the implications for our self esteem.
I think this work Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature by Ngugi wa Thiong’o is an introduction to some pertinent ideas though I do not agree with him 100% what is key is we realise OUR languages are dying and we are CHEERING That's the point to be emphasized. Innit? It's insignificant seeking perfection or crucifying someone for not being perfect in a language that probably is their 2nd, 3rd or even fourth language! More so when the language varies as much as English does. You can't always fault people for not keeping up with the variations. Heck, even some of the people who the language is their first and only language are horrible users themselves. Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Niyi Osundare et al; hard as they may try, will never match Williams Shakespear, Albert Sidney Hornby, Harold Edward Palmer and their ilk ti!t for tat when it comes to the usage of English language. In the same vein, Suzanne Wenger go quench for where Adebayo Faleti take dey vibe Yoruba. I make bold to say, the world over, no language can successfully and expressly interprete the thoughts and sayings of a given language the way the first language puts it or intends it to be without some form of adulteration. |

ogugua88: Not at all. Spoken English and written English differ, the same way, say, spoken Igbo and written Igbo differ. The way you speak with your friends, parents, or strangers is different in comparison to the way one writes. Presidents Obama and Clinton are fond of saying "gonna", "wanna", and "shoulda", to appear more personable with average Americans, but I guarantee you that's not how their speechwriters wrote it.
It's in every language. I studied French for over five years and I cannot understand everyday French. What I learned as "je ne sais pas" (I don't know), has become "j'en sais pas", which now sounds like "j'ens pas". When you're amongst informal company, such as friends, then you can speak however you like and text however you like. When people start writing improperly and speaking improperly in proper settings because that's all they know, however, then we have a problem, which is what the OP stated. So what you are saying in essence is, one should be meticulous with written english, but can afford to be sloppy with their speeches? Every aspect of any given language is equally as important as any other. It's hypocritical picking on one aspect of a particular language where you think you are an 'authority', whereas you are equally as culpable in the general usage of such language. In your case, it is supposed grammatical errors that peeves you, while for someone else it is horrendous punctuation or not knowing when to capitalize. . P.S.: Cheryl Cole got booted off 'X Factor' because of her strong Geordie accent. |

ogugua88: National language of Japan = Japanese. Official language of Germany = German. Official language of France = French. Official language of Nigeria = English.
I think it's safe to assume that schools in Japan, Germany, and France are conducted in their official/national languages. Our schools are conducted in English. A lot of today's generation cannot speak native tongues nor do they have a good grasp on English. That's a big problem.
People from Japan, Germany, and France are not made fun of because if they're wrong, they ask for correction. The OP has made a thread asking why we don't care about the English language, which is the official language of Nigeria. Response? "It's not our language". One of our biggest problem is our inability to realize our mistakes and correct them. Instead, we make excuses and become defensive.
There's nothing wrong with someone saying what sounds like "should of". The contraction of "should have" is "should've", which sounds like "should of". The err is when a person spells "should've" as "should of". That comment is for the pubs. If you want to be so particular about syntax, you should as well be as detailed about phonology. |

ogugua88: Learned and learnt are interchangeable I believe. Learned is American English whereas learnt is British English. Allegedly, there was a rule that made the past participle of learn "learnt". The rule no longer exists, but the word is still used. Coincidentally, British English is the standard bearer. So ' learned' be damned! lol |
