nitrogen: I like OGS o, he was great (not very great) as a player for Utd. He became really popular after 1999. He was not here for a very long time, he was not a starter, he was not a major game changer, he was not as influential both off and on the pitch as other players.
MRTA7: Its clear you never watched Ole at man utd.
We can have a conversation about Ole not being good enough to manage man utd. But as a player, he was termed 20Legend before he even left the club for a reason. Dont forget he finished his career as a right sided attacker. If not for several major injuries he's output who have been even higher. Of course the Cl final goal endeared him mostly to fans but even before then, he scored 4 goals off the bench in a match and also several big game goals. He had a career most would dream of as a united player. So keep that separate from Ole the manager.
Like I said, it’s quite tricky. Those things are nothing jare. It was just 1999 if I may say.
afrodoc2: I hope you are aware that Solskjaer lost 2 seasons to injury so he actually played 9 seasons in reality.
What point are you trying to make by bringing Chicharito into this?
Solskjaer played more games, spent more years, scored more goals, and scored probably the most important goal in club history. What does Chicharito have to do with it?
Being a club legend is not even about quality but about what you meant to the club and the fans. Raul is a bigger Madrid legend than Brazilian Ronaldo.
Duncan Ferguson is a bigger Everton legend than Rooney. Drogba is a bigger Chelshit legend than Shevchenko.
Well, my point is, I am trying to understand why you think OGS is a legend? Because of goals e.g Rooney, etc? Don’t forget you posted a video of all his goals. Or because he was with the first team for a very long time e.g. Scholes, Giggs, etc. Or because he was always coming in as a sub player to help change games? e.g Hernandez, or because of 1999? Finally, because he is among the legends on Utd’s website?
Why and how is he a legend? It’s a tricky one sha.
benji93: I never said he cannot. Or that wasn't what i meant. But can you guarantee it won't impact his career? Your point depends on that premise. And if that premise were true, i would have to agree with you. But neither you or I is sure it is.
Lol, let’s stop running around like bush gods. OGS likes the managerial role, he wants to be a football manager, if you give him the TD role, and then appoint another manager, you won’t like the outcome. It’s a huge conflict.
afrodoc2: The simple answer was that in the mid to late 90s he was bought for little money and was an unknown Norwegian, Andy Cole was bought for big money, had been top scorer with Newcastle with 34 goals and was English. Cantona was obviously untouchable.
By the time Cantona left Dwight Yorke another big money signing came in, and Yorke/Cole had the best combination i ever saw in English football.
After that Fergie got Ruud who he used mainly as a lone striker. The only season Ole played up front with Ruud for an extended period he got 17 league goals.
Thanks. Fergie never regarded him as a Starting 11 player, reason for the big signings.
What about Hernandez? He was a good sub player like Ole, only difference is he didn’t score UCL final goals. But he scored great quarterfinals and I think semifinals goals. Also, he scored 58 goals in 5 seasons, Ole scored 126 in 11 seasons.
benji93: Good question again. . And that's correct. mostly, managers get the sack, but it may because the job of a technical director is not as difficult as that of the manager. Also the success of a team depends mostly on the manager According to history, between the two, who is the success of the team attributed to? You rarely hear the name of the director, unless he comes in and revolutionizes the system.
So what makes you think that a TD cannot sabotage the activities of a manager without any impact on his own career?
afrodoc2: Stop spreading misinformation even if you are joking. More ignorant people would take it as gospel.
Fergie visited Pep in New York around Christmas 2012 in order to convince him to take over in 2013. Pep said no that he already had an agreement with Bayern.
Bobby Charlton who hated JM blocked Mourinho who was Ferguson's 2nd choice.
It was after this that Moyes name up.
Pep did not tell him no, in fact Pep said that Fergie did not mention it to him, reason he took the Bayern offer.
Quite possible that Fergie was too proud/big to ask him directly sha.
afrodoc2: He is a United legend. His coaching failures can't take away from his legacy as a striker. he scored loads of goals on limited minutes, playing as a sub for several years without causing trouble.
He scored the single most important goal in our history IMO.
He is and has always been listed amongst the legends in the official website.
Quite disrespectful to question his legendary status IMO.
Solskjaer's goals for those that have forgotten, and for the indomie generation. Sorry it is so long. Took 30 minutes to fit in all his goals. Great United striker. Average United manager.
But, how come he was only a sub almost throughout his time at Utd? Manager’s strategy/tactic?
He became really popular because of 1999. If Hanandez had stayed for like 10 years as a sub striker, would you have called him a legend as well? Don’t forget he scored lots of goals + he scored crucial goals on UCL nights.
benji93: Oh so now you see. When i mentioned sometime earlier that the "shut up" thing was a joke, some said it doesn't matter. It's not right to say that. but you can subtly tell some fans that they are 'up manu' fans- which subtly means they are not smart, and do not know how business works- and call it a joke. . you see that's kind of pretentious. And don't worry i won't shut you up. . As i understand there are a lot of leders here. Now, the bolded is probably true. That's a better argument. Stop tacking on 'sabotage' as a reason, cos it will most likely bite him in the ass. The job of a technical director is different from that of a coach. It will be obvious if all he does is sabotage the manager.
Lol, don’t you think he can do it and get away with it? Most times, managers get sacked not directors, also, he is a utd ‘legend’.
handelex: I agree with you except on the fact that he purposely sabotaged our future success. He failed in that aspect no doubt but it was not to preserve his status as a legend, that will be so insecure of him cos no manager can achieve what he achieved in terms of longevity and building team after team while remaining very successful and winning trophies.
Was Pep available or not at the time he announced his retirement? Not sure it was a selfish stuff, it was to hurt dem Glazers because no one ever liked them since they took over ownership.
Don’t mind me, I just did not like what Fergie did to us, he messed up!
benji93: Oh so all companies in the corporate world are run the same way? If he becomes the director and the manager fails, will he not receive some of the blame as well and probably get fired. you have a very narrow view on these issues, and you do not consider that other arguments based on perspectives different from yours may be more likely. You are are talking as if you are a CEO of a company, and are well versed in such matters, but you are not, obviously. Quite ocndescending honestly, to think some are just 'up manu' fans and you belong to the class of men with such big business minds. The last questions you asked are good questions. But do not presume you know why they happened. Maybe they didn't have a plan.
Bro, I am not ready to type a long story jare. I know what I am saying. Just calm down, the ‘up manu’ thing is a joke, before you tell me to shut up
Anyway, OGS as a director will be a big mistake due to reasons such as inexperience, sabotage etc.
engrelvis: How many good close off deals has his influence help us with? Is ole really legend at man utd? With exceptions of last minutes goal he scored against Bayern in 1999 ueafa championsfinal finals, what really made him a legend? Because he was a part of d treble winning team?He was more or less a fringe player. He is nt a legend
Tell them o. Our ex-players also believe he is a legend, reason they keep defending him.
handelex: I consider this your take on Fergie a conspiracy theory. So you honestly believe Fergie will sabotage the future success of the club just to preserve his god status? If anything sef, that's a dent on his legacy.
Why did he recommend us David Moyes? Why did Gill follow him?
Fergie brought us to where we are today (the top), but he should have helped develop a succession plan, he was with Utd for how many decades?
afrodoc2: Forget sabotage sef. Why would Ole be a good technical director?
Some people think these jobs are so easy you can just walk into the office and start doing them with neither experience nor aptitude.
Because he is a Utd legend, reason some people in here still believe that he is the right manager for the team. We just need to get him 11 players, so he can perform. We are almost there sha (signing 11 new players)
afrodoc2: There is a reason Pep sold Navas and could not get him to perform like Sterling or the Silvas. There is a reason Pep has been recycling left backs like a Green Party member.
You can't give what you don't have. No coach can infuse a player with talent. it is God given.
The AWB i saw at Crystal Palace was too poor technically and nothing any human can do can really change it. He has actually improved a bit but he is coming from such a low level that it is still pointless.
Solskjaer's mistake was going for him in the first place. He will never be good going forward. No be curse. It is what it is.
Hmmmm, so AWB wants to be useless and unfortunate sha. Do you think Fergie can do something to improve the guy?
benji93: OGS as a director will frustrate the new manager? What kind of take is this? Do you know Ole in person? If i start to dey insult una now, you go say person no dey respect elders. . I know say you get wild imaginations, as almost everyone here. But sometimes he good to encapsulate those imaginations in reality. Maybe na wetin you go do be that, if you are in such a situation, but no be everybody be like. You fit assume say no be everybody dey think the way you dey think.
See you, it's a corporate/business world. Forget passion and love for the club.
Why did Fergie leave without a plan for the club, why did Gill decide to follow him? Better just keep to your 'up manu' chants.
Starkizito: He's a club legend and his influence can be used to close off deals in the future. Not only him(Ole) the likes of 'dem Beckham,Evra.etc can hold that down, imagine a club as big as united sends out lawyers to go seal transfer deals.
Now imagine if you are sancho and Beckham comes calling you won't you force a move by all means sir?
So, who should be sealing transfer deals? You think OGS can negotiate and finalise transfers, siddon there.
The best a football director with no business or negotiation experience can do is identify and recommend players, you need negotiators and lawyers to close the deal.
MorataFC: This one is more concern about what Mourinho will say than the heavy defeat his team have suffered.
Lol, because if and when Mou is on your case, you are in trouble especially if you are not smart. By continuing to exchange words with him, you will suffer!
timay: Here we go again. Na so dem hype Maguire as the next Maldini for us. Saying he will start in most teams. Meanwhile Baba is a fridge who struggles at highline defending because he moves like a trailer
Na here we go dey greenwood go still outscore him by season end even though Greenwood is being played as a RW instead of CF
Starkizito: Yes boss!Spot on!Ole will be a good technical director(he can't tweak his tactics when found out) he should resign and take up that position. Let's go for POCH (epl proven)or nagelsmann(proven).
Let me tell you what will happen, sabotage!
OGS as a director will frustrate the new manager and ensure there is no success so the world get the message that he was not a failure.
If we decide to get a director, just don't target our legends, also, don't stay in England, go to Europe.
afrodoc2: Hehehe. You were one of those tackling me that time?
See, in football once you enter your 20s what you can do is IMPROVE on what you already have and also be more consistent at it. You can't suddenly ACQUIRE a new skill.
In particular at that age it is almost impossible to suddenly develop a great touch or great dribbling. It is easier to improve shooting, crossing, tackling, positioning e.t.c BUT touch and dribbling is developed before 18.
But the manager can help him to improve his crossing, positioning, shooting etc. All players are not perfect, if a manager is comfortable buying a player, then he should find a way to make his style fit the player's abilities while coaching him to improve overtime.
Age is key, I agree. But any player below 28 can still improve.
handelex: With a coach of his ceiling, I probably expected a title challenge at least, not that the Europa League is bad but we don't belong in that league.
KingAlabi: With respect to fans expectations he failed
And ole is also failing
Also failing ke, he has failed. Top 3 with 66 points is BS now, 3 semi-finals without a final is not good at all. Also, no overall improvement in our game play, sometimes he gets the team to play the LVG way, another time, he adopts Mou's style, instead of staying in one place so thunder can fire him well well.
handelex: They fail to see that the problem is more than Ole although Ole himself is average, where bigger and better Coaches like LVG and Mou failed with the same system is it Ole that will succeed? Oga has tried his best.
I have a question, did Mou actually fail at Utd? We all know that Mou won some trophies for us and we sacked him in his third year. Dont forget the 3rd year jinx with Mourinho. He is a mercenary and a 'quick success' guy, he delivered to some extent and we moved him on.
