We'll be homeschooling our kids till they reach college age.We have a 16-month-old and one underway. Here in Edmonton, we have some homeschooling co-ops.I'll be using the one in my church when time comes.

Enculer2:
For those with kids, what are you doing for tomorrow's protest?

Are you homeschooling them tomorrow?

There are protests against LGBT indoctrination tomorrow.

Foe those with experience? What did you do?

Not trying to defend ripping people off.But $2k for 2 two bedroom *furnished* basement sounds reasonable to me.We would have definitely gone for this option if we found any one available when we landed in Calgary 4months ago.Instead,we rented a two br basement airbnb at $120 a day, which would have costed us over $3k a month. We ended up leaving Calgary after 2weeks for Edmonton, but I would have gladly stayed longer in Calgary to find a place for more time had we found this type of affordable short term rental.

olalekan9320:
Renting out a basement for 2000 dollars in Calgary where the average rent for main floor is between 1400 and 1900 is crazy. You know nobody who's already here for more than 6 months would rent that despite the very crazy rental market. You just want to take advantage of new immigrants because you know they are the only one who would rent that and I like the fact that you kuku just focus on them grin, forgetting that you were one

He no concern me sha to each his own

Thank you for the well articulated breakdown.I'm definitely in no way considering going back, but just somewhat worried about the what-ifs of not finding a job when need arises.Curious what your field of expertise is.

Enculer2:
I will try to summarise here and hopefully it will help people who are planning to land Canada. These are purely my opinions based on researches I have carried out and personal experiences I have lived. In the end, you need a reference and you can then compare Canada based on your reference and what people are saying. Anyone who would listen to people in order to decide probably has not thought of things carefully. There is long term thinking and short term thinking. Many people I see do short term thinking for Canada.

This is my reference. I have Nigerian, UK (Scotland and England), French work experience and in the last couple of years have carefully considered UK/France/Canada. Even after getting PR confirmed last year, it was still 50-50 on whether to go to Canada. We visited Canada a couple of times and went back to the UK a few times to get a feel for things. If you were not in Canada, where would you have been?

These following resources/contacts helped me with motivation, focus, jobs, information on life in Canada and info on UK vs Canada or Canada vs France.

- LinkedIN networking
- Preparing for my professional certification/recognition in Canada.
- British Expats In Canada (facebook group)
- Les Français au Canada (facebook group)
- French in Toronto
- Jim Rohn, Brian Tracy and Stephen Covey's tapes over and over
- Old classmates living in Canada with successful careers
- TEF Community on nairaland (ever grateful to the lady that shared her prep my future access. Cannot remember her name)
- Avoiding negative people on the social web
- Aligning with positive people on the web.
- Avoiding youtube videos like "Top 10 reasons why people are leaving Canada" No. 1 Canada is cold (people have gotta be dumb not to have known that become coming here). No. 2 Canada is lonely (Really? No. Rather, they are boring). No. 3 No jobs in Canada (Not accurate!) No 4 Canada is expensive (True, but so are many other countries) etc. I watched a few of them out of curiosity but stopped when I discovered that it was basically desperate youtubers churning out the same garbage (nothing new, nothing innovative, just copy and paste). I rather focussed on videos of success stories - you attract what you focus on.

You have done well by coming to Canada with your family. Congrats. Now, you need to stay focussed.

Stephen Covey said “All things are created twice “There’s a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation to all things. Create a positive future in Canada for you and your family. “Abraham Lincoln said: ‘The best way to predict the future is to create it'.

You are the right place in Canada. If I had to pick between Nigeria, Scotland, England, France and Canada using the KWINK analysis by Brian Tracy, I would pick Canada again and again.

PM for more positivity if you want and if you want to sharpen the saw.

Hi guys, it's weekend let's have this discussion.

So I've been here for close to 4months with my wife and son.My pregnant wife does a WFH call centre job but I'm not yet working.I'm self studying and hoping to start applying for IT jobs(cloud computing) in November coming from a non-IT background.I still have my online gig which makes me about $1500/month currently. What we earn is sufficient for us,and we are happy.I was doing extremely well back home with lots of investments but we decided to make the move for lots of mostly non-financial reasons. We absolutely have no regrets over our move.

However,we have been seeing so much negativity, bitter complains and outright vilification of how bad Canada is on Tiktok/IG/Facebook and this is making us a little worried.Do any of you regret your move? What percentage would you estimate of Nigerians who couldn't make it here migrating LEGALLY(PR, student to PR, Work visa)? Any thoughts?
TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by njambert: 5:50am On Sep 12, 2023
You can,but your chances are lower.Follow the resources pinned on the Express Entry section to find the procedure,or go to Canadian official immigration website to check full info. You can aswell watch this video.

Do your research.Nothing secret about it.

Thanks for sharing. Did you purchase on Aliexpress of something|? I'm planning to get furniture sets from China and I'm wondering how importing will look like with procedures and taxes.

Enculer2:
I should have taken one yesterday. So yesterday we went to customs in Mississauga to sign for our furniture and other belongings that arrived Saturday night in a container. The process was easier than I thought. The good thing is that PR holders do not get to pay for customs duties if they declare their 'goods to follow' so it was a relief for me.

Also I hope you guys use the Canoo app. You get to visit a host of locations free of charge as permanent residents. We have visited the Toronto zoo a couple of times with the whole family and only pay for parking (15 CAD). A visit to the zoo for us family without the app is like 80 CAD or there about.

We will make some dashcams......

Salaam.

You did great, except that it seems you messed up on the Reading section. From every indication you can do much better, and the score you had on Reading was just an odd occurrence.I advise you retake it.You'll get that golden score. It'll do so much good to your whole journey.

TravelRe: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant Part 2 by njambert: 10:22am On Sep 11, 2023
I doubt anyone can get EE at this age unless the person isn't the principal applicant(younger spouse) or trade/specific profession or PNP to EE.At age 43, you only get 17points for age. No matter how much you have in IELTS, or highest education or work experience or even a sibling in Canada. At best low 400s in points. There's a job offer or PNP somewhere to crank up that score, or the just recently introduced specific draws(like bilingualism) for it to work.

Most 43year olds will hardly meet these requirements.

Enculer2:
When you say "big pass EE" please mention her age. I know people who got EE at 43 years. Unless you are telling us that she is way older than 43. If someone can get it at 43, it is possible for someone older if they meet other requirements.

Yes, the older you get, the more difficult it is but they are by no means out of it.

Hello house,
Are women paid during maternity leave in Canada?
It depends if you have completed the minimum required number of working hours needed to receive maternity leave benefits prior to birth. Each city(not every city in each province has same requirement) has its own specific number. For ex in Calgary it's 665Hrs of work which equates to 4months of a 40Hr/week work.In Edmonton it's 700Hrs.

You can find specific data here:

getting an accommodation in Edmonton is easier that Calgary??
Much easier and cheaper. There's also a better community feel or living in Edmonton than Calgary from my little time of observation. Edmonton is slower.I feel you don't need to push yourself too much to make a good living here.

Out of curiosity, why are you mulling moving back to Calgary knowing fully well that things are cheaper in Edmonton as well as the cost of living being lower in Edmonton?
Thank you.
Actually I'm pretty good with Edmonton and we have an excellent church community here.I would only leave for Calgary if I get a convincingly high paying on-site job there.Calgary's more beautiful, but the rental situation was crazy. Each rental we checked on had tens of people on the waiting list and requirements were so high we wouldn't qualify. Our place here in Edmonton is atleast 25% cheaper than we could possibly find in Calgary.

So sorry I only saw this today. We came to Calgary(end of May) but couldn't find an accomodation for two weeks so we moved to Edmonton. All is good here, my wife has found a job, and with my online gig we are pretty comfortable. However I'm in search for a job in cloud computing preferably remote, but it's hard to come by.Rarely any decent tech jobs here, and I'm open to moving back to Calgary if I can find a very well paid on-site job.

Hi Guys, thank you for all the informations you are giving here for free.
Please I have some questions.
We are in the UK been here since 2021. But I have continous urge to go to Canada. With this new Nova Scotia Nursing Board Registration, I am thinking of using this to come in. But I have fears.
Will Canada be better than the UK for us.
My wife is a Nurse and I am a Business Analyst.
In fours time we will get our ILR aka PR at a fee of £10k.
From my research and understanding, assuming we enter Canada this year with work permit, we will be getting PR earlier at $1400 Canadian Dollars.

I need someone to help with information on life in Nova Scotia. I will really appreciate facts on cost of rent for a 3-4 bedroom flat/house.
Schooling for children and Family values.
Tax and bills.

Both myself and wife gets taxed 40% and when we return home with the 60%, we will pay Local Government tax aka Council tax. Then after 5years of this taxing I will have to pay £10,000 for ILR aka PR na this one dey vex me pass.
Youkay have not been bad But that PR money dey vex me.
Please help.
I have no experience with any of the two countries above. Will be moving to Calgary in a few weeks time, having lived in China for 7yrs( great place, just not having favourable laws for longterm stay and lack of some freedoms).I think your choice of movement should weigh far above the PR fees.Because in the grand scheme of things, the PR fees are negligible compared to the longterm benefits you will get regardless which country you choose. So you need to weigh the pros and cons of both the UK and Canada, and thoroughly go through these with your wife.
There are already generalities between both countries that we all know. You have to dig deeper before deciding.

Reading through the different posts and comments here, I must say a lot has changed and evolved since Part 1 of this thread. It’s been 5 years, of being a PR and now awaiting Citizenship callup. Started the whole journey on here, right from Part 1 of the thread. This is wishing you Ladies and Gents all the luck as you prepare your apps and patience as you await results.

As a way to give back, I live in Calgary, AB and work in 1 of the top banks as a Senior FA. Anybody landing and needing help with accommodation, transportation from airport and info on basic banking needs on landing can hit me up. I may be able to make referrals or recommendations. It’s pro bono as well.

Once again, all the best y’all.

Just like those above me have said, if being close to immigrants is the main propeller to move to Airdrie, then you have more reasons to stay in Calgary.

When I was renting, my rent was cheaper here in Calgary than a comparable unit in Airdrie. I also spent less time commuting and do not think of evening hold-ups. And when buying a house, they don't build or sell for emotions, you get what you pay for, and you'll get something within your budget in Calgary.

Welcome in advance.
Thank you so much. Which areas of Calgary would you suggest for settlement? Young family of 3.

4. Start building projects, even if it means branching off of what some other people have done. This is important and is often the most effective way to learn.

5. Join communities and find motivation there. Try to join Nigerian communities, not foreign ones. Seeing the people you know (or feel you know) do things you want to do can be a great motivation. Besides, you can find a lot of collaboration opportunities there.

6. Keep practicing and don’t hesitate to start putting your CV out for internship positions. If you get interviews for such positions, be open and let them know your situation. Some may in fact take you up.

7. What I think is the God-level is going for a master’s degree in your field of choosing. Yes, having a master’s degree isn’t that important for the job market. But trust me, if you are able to complete a master’s degree in Canada or the US in an excellent University, you can do that job. Not only is the work intensive enough to set you straight, it also will help you a lot in your job applications. While employers may not be particular about a master's degree, it does set your CV apart from the others, especially if it is from an excellent university.

8. Above all, you should know that you are not alone here. Several people have accomplished exactly what you want to accomplish, so it’s not rocket science. Sorry to say, there’s nothing fantastic about it. You can do it just as many other people from varying backgrounds have done it. I can start counting off the top of my head now those who I know personally who have made this transition successfully and are flourishing in their field at the moment. You can’t imagine the feeling of accomplishment that comes with it.

9. Finally, never stop learning. No matter what you do, never for once fold your hands, sit down, and think you have arrived. Never ever stop learning.
Wowwwwww thank you so much for taking out your time to clarify, educate and expantiate for me.All screenshotted and saved and will commit to in the months ahead.

Actually,I'm leaning more towards front end dev but doubt how fruitful or necessary it is compared to software dev or backend.Infact,I already started HTML/CSS and JS but didn't complete the course but understood basics.I cannot underestimate the importance the importance of inclass learning especially as I have alot of intraday commitments.
