Ikeme returns to England, Eagles flight delayed for 2 hours

Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme back to England

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme did not travel with the rest of the Super Eagles squad to Egypt as the team’s chartered flight was delayed for more than two hours so as to get an airspace clearance.

On Sunday, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) announced Ikeme was suffering from a stomach upset which stopped him from training and as such he has been ruled out of Tuesday’s AFCON rematch against Egypt in Alexandria.

Ikeme has been Eagles first-choice goalkeeper since September after Lille star Vincent Enyeama retired from international football after a major falling out with former coach Sunday Oliseh.

South Africa-based Daniel Akpeyi is now expected to be between the posts on Tuesday with Sunshine Stars shot stopper Ikechukwu Ezenwa his cover.

In the meantime, the Eagles departure to Egypt was held back for almost two hours as the chartered Arik Air flight sought clearance to fly across the air space of Sudan.

The Eagles are expected to have a feel of the pitch at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria later today.

Nigeria's Super Eagles have landed in Egypt

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have landed in Alexandria after a six-hour flight ahead of Tuesday’s AFCON rematch against Egypt.

The team’s departure from Abuja on a chartered flight was delayed by two hours as they sought clearance to fly over Sudan.

England-based goalkeeper Carl Ikeme was the only player who did not make the flight as he has returned to his club after he was ruled out of the match due to a stomach problem.

Reports have it that hundreds of the country’s supporters were denied entry visas and so could not make the trip to cheer the Eagles to victory in a must-win game.

Owner of Nigeria league club FC IfeanyiUbah is believed to have helped out cash-strapped Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to secure a chartered flight for this trip.

Egypt lead Group G, which has now been reduced to three teams following the withdrawal of Chad, with four points with Nigeria still two points behind on two points.

Tanzania are now bottom of the standings on a point.
Former NFF president Aminu Maigari and some members of the House of Representatives committee on sports are among those who made the trip.

...............“This Buhari Changes Like The Colors Of the Rainbow” – Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie

“Change is not changing from Jonathan to Buhari, Okogie, “Change is behavioural and pervades all levels of society including the family, the church, the mosque, schools, market women and business men. “When we talk of change, we talk of positive-salutary, healthy growth and development oriented change that cuts across the entire gamut of the society”.

“What sort of change is this that ignores the glaring un-equal distribution of national income?
It is absurd that the same government that is unable to pay N18, 000 per month to the lowest grade of labour can afford to pay N1.8 Million per month to anyone in the economy”.

“Why must tax payers’ money be used to feed Mr. President and his family? “Why must the tax payers’ money be used to buy brand new exotic vehicles for the legislatures, judges, ministers and governors when they are heavily paid? Why don’t they use loan finance and mortgage finance to buy their cars and houses?

This is also a form of looting and it is the cause of grounding the economy and calling in IMF spin-doctor all the time”.

“Precisely two years ago this same President Buhari rejected off hand this use of spindoctor to heal the ailing economy”.

“He preferred the use of counter trade and inward looking policies like cutting down cost and flamboyant exotic life styles”.

“Today I am not so sure we have the same Buhari. I do hope he has not changed all the colours of the rainbow. The ruling elites are living a luxurious life while the masses are in abject poverty and yet we are all Nigerians. Enough of this change-conundrum,”the Cardinal warned.

“This Buhari Changes Like The Colors Of the Rainbow” – Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie

The Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently retool, refocus and aggressively lead by example on all fronts or risk plunging Nigeria into a state of despondency.

In a statement released by the Director of Social Communications of the Diocese, Monsignor Gabriel Osu, Okogie accused the president of waging a shoddy corruption war and acting disdainfully towards the judicial authorities while millions of Nigerians were left to face unimaginable social problems.

“He must retool, refocus and aggressively face the social, economic (fiscal and monetary) problems we have head on, without letting the anti corruption drive look like a political distraction,” the cardinal noted.

Expressing disenchantment with the president’s style, Okogie said: “A snail paced and disordered methodology in governance, his apparent disdain for judicial authority and decisions, a lost today found tomorrow 2016 budget debacle, and a rather rudderless and confused Central Bank with an unclear monetary policy strategy (inevitably increasing the economic uncertainties being faced by Nigerians), have set alarm bells ringing in my mind and in the minds of many discerning Nigerians.”

“Indeed, his perceived discordant relationship with the leadership of the Legislature has many naysayers chuckling and remarking that President Buhari’s government is heading rather naturally, into his comfort zone – a one man show.”

Cardinal Anthony Olubunmi Okogie also noted that a lot of Nigerians are beginning to feel that President Buhari is fast transforming this nation into a police state where Mr. President, the EFCC and DSS rule the day.

“What they say is given lurid headlines in the media, and it seems to all that some of the defendants/accused persons are being tried in the press with information conveniently slipping into the hands of the press, presumably from the security agencies, even before such people have been charged to court.” He also frowned on the President’s refusal to heed court pronouncements regarding the bail granted to the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki”.

“The Pro-Biafran activist, Nnmadi Kanu and the erstwhile NSA Sambo Dasuki were granted bail by the courts but such bails were disregarded by the security agents under Buhari’s watch.

Unfortunately, democracy is difficult and this government must realise that democracy pervasively coloured with impunity, arbitrariness and high handedness, cannot be used to fight and correct the financial impunity and reckless abandon of the previous administration, even if it is more difficult to do so, the rule of law must be obeyed and be the order of the day”.

“If Buhari wants to leave a creditable legacy come 2019 he should retool the bureaucracy. For instance, the roof of the Central Bank is leaking water”.

“Governors, who arm-twisted Okonjo Iweala into signing out our reserves held by Central Bank, are today ministers in the APC government. We are still talking about change and corruption when old things refuse to pass away! These political gimmicks can only carry away gullible or naive Nigerians. President Buhari should beam his flash light on policies and programmes that will lift up the Masses. Existing industries are almost dead and call for urgent revitalization”.

“The budget ought to aid solutions to the mass unemployment, Rural-Urban migration, skewedness in the distribution of income, abject rural poverty and industrialization of rural economy”.

“The 774 local government capitals should be linked to their state capitals. Even the mind boggling infrastructure deficits can take the entire tenure to address”.

“The weakness in the bureaucracy has not been addressed. Consequently, the problem the APC government is trying to solve is bound to re-occur because it is treatment of effect rather than the cause. Causative factors are being totally ignored or glossed over.

Institutional weakness pervades the MDAs, offices of the Accountant General, Auditor General and the Central Bank itself.”

“Our Change must change something. How could we continue to talk of change in a static system? How could we be talking of change when the same crew are governors, ministers, senators, and members of the House of Representatives?

This is a cyclical devolution of power to the same people who are never out of power! “What sort of change is the President talking about? When will the youth take over when even a governor does not take a bow and go? When shall we plan for the replacement of delinquent leadership? This is what constitutes change”.
.......more to come.

Chelsea star Mikel Obi has charged the Super Eagles to give everything when they face Egypt for the second time in four days in Alexandria in their quest to qualify Nigeria for next year’s AFCON in Gabon.

Egypt remain remain top of their qualifying group with seven points, two points more than Nigeria, after a 1-1 draw in Kaduna on Friday in Kaduna.

Nigeria captain Mikel said the Eagles have to fight harder than they have ever done to snatch the three points at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in the Mediterranean coast.

“It’s a massive battle that we are going for, and there should be no illusion about it. We have to face reality, and everyone has to give more than 100 per cent because we just have to qualify for the Cup of Nations,” said Obi, one of Nigeria’s outstanding players when they won the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa three years ago.

The midfield enforcer insisted there was no reason to panic following Friday’s draw, and pointed to the fact that there are still three more matches left in the campaign.

“We have to go to Alexandria and fight with everything we have. There are still matches to play and we have confidence that we will earn the ticket. We also call on Nigerians to believe in the team and continue to support us.”

After the clash with the Pharaohs in Alexandria on Tuesday, the Eagles will travel to Nd’jamena to battle the Le Sao of Chad in the first week of June, before hosting Tanzania in the final round of the series in the first week of September.

NFF top shots have confirmed that the players and officials will now travel to Alexandria on Monday aboard a chartered flight, as against an earlier arrangement to fly the delegation aboard Egypt Air.

The team will fly direct to Alexandria and have the official training at the match venue on Monday evening, before Tuesday’s match.

(cool SIASIA SHOULD GO TO ALEXANDRIA HEARING ECHOES OF GUINEA.

The battle of Alexandria will be won from the bench, not merely by talent. Siasia has an embarrassing array of talented young players, but how he deploys them will be key. While he can be rest assured that the goals will surely come, there is also need for caution. I will suggest a midfield trio of Mikel, Etebo and Okechukwu to shield a suspect back four. The goals will come, but it will be difficult chasing the game.

By all means possible, the momentum should always be on Nigeria’s side. He should take a cue from the Guinea game that cost Nigeria AFCON ticket in 2011 with him at the helm.

(9) ETEBO DIDN’T FAIL SIASIA
Siasia fielded Etebo because of his goal-scoring prowess from the midfield. The boy didn’t fail. Always having that eye for goals, he had no business being at that spot where he pounced on the rebound to score. That is a centre-forward’s position. If Okechukwu starts in Alexandria, Etebo should play a more advanced role.

While being so useful in the attacking third, he helps keep the team’s shape in the middle of the pack.

(10) IGHALO’S STRUGGLES IN THE NATIONAL TEAM
Odion Ighalo is yet to hit that rich vein of form in the national team. We know he is also struggling for goals at club levelm but even when he was scoring for fun at Watford, he never replicated that in the Super Eagles. Somehow, the coaches have not found the right combo that will get him firing in the green and white colours. A big worry for Siasia.

Nigeria vs Egypt: 10 Things we learnt

Finally it has come and gone. The much anticipated AFCON qualifier between Nigeria and Egypt ended 1-1. Oghenekaro Etebo’s 60th minute goal seemed to have secured all three points till Mohammed Salah struck in stoppage time.

Here are 10 things we learnt…
(1)SIASIA SHOULD MIX IT!
Critics of the Sunday Oliseh era opined that the team were boring.

They rarely created goal-scoring opportunities. At a point, NFF president Amaju Pinnick mooted the idea of hiring an attacking coach to help the team’s progression to the final third.

Siasia’s plus is that his teams create chances for fun. They score many goals, but also have difficulties keeping things tight at the back. It is more like he entirely neglects the defensive aspect of the game. If he had struck a balance between attacking and securing the one goal lead on Friday, the result could have been different. Even with a vital victory few minutes away, the boys were still pouring forward as if they were trailing. Caution would have been the watchword at that point.

(2) IWOBI MUSTN’T HAVE PLAYED
I understand the need to have Alex Iwobi feature in a competitive game for Nigeria and ward off England’s advances, but that shouldn’t have been at the expense of the three points. This was a Grade A competitive fixture and not some friendly. Some coaches would prefer to start the game with Iwobi and substitute him according to the progression of the game. If you planned to introduce him from the bench, the flow of the game might create no need for him. That was the case in this match. Iwobi’s competitive debut would have been delayed till the Alexandria reverse fixture, where he would have been handed a starting shirt.

(3) SHOULD HAVE BEEN AZUBUIKE, NOT IWOBI
At the point Iwobi was introduced, the ideal player to have come off the bench was Azubuike Okechukwu. Siasia needed more bodies in the middle of the pack and ‘Zuby’ would have kept things tighter alongside Mikel Obi and Etebo. There were many offensive players in that team to guarantee safety.

(4) YES, THESE EAGLES CAN SCORE GOALS IN ALEXANDRIA
One thing that abounds in this team are goal threats. The mobility is heartwarming, a vintage Siasia team. In a game the team must win, you can be sure they will score. The team have the potentials to score as many as are needed, but I can’t guarantee their protecting the lead. A team who parade Odion Ighalo, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho can score goals anywhere on the continent. And when they are under Siasia’s tutelage, he knows how to squeeze out goals from rocks.

(5) FOR ALEXANDRIA, ELDERSON SHOULD STEP IN
Make no mistakes, I have high regards for Stanley Amuzie. I have been following his career for some time and I think he is a long-term option at left back, but this game may have come too soon after his long-term injury. He had a torrid time against Egypt’s Salah and was the biggest culprit for the Egyptian goal. The more experienced Elderson Echiejile should step in in Alexandria. It will be a more grueling duel.

(6) AMBROSE’S BALL-HANDLING DEFFICIENCIES
How many times was Efe Ambrose caught in possession unnecessarily? He has the penchant to initiate attack from defense. Laudable as that is, one should be well equipped to do so.

He lacks the finesse and his pass accuracy is low consequently he puts more pressure on the defence. He should be advised to keep it simple and not go beyond his abilities. Some of those let-off that the Egyptians did not capitalise on will not go unpunished in Alexandria.

(7)CONFIRMED! WE HAVE PROBLEMS AT RIGHT BACK!!
Gradually, the right back has become a problematic position in the national team. From Efe Ambrose to Solomon Kwambe, Leon Balogun and now Shehu Abdullahi we have been unable to get a modern-day full back who can initiate attack with ease. Given Siasia’s offensive disposition, he will make do with some flying wing backs. I will recommend former U20 captain Musa Mohammed and Wikki Tourists’ captain Mustapha Ibrahim. This embarrassment has to end. Is this not the same country who once paraded the likes of Yisa Shofoluwe and Mobi Oparaku at right back?

President of Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick says the Super Eagles of Nigeria will continue to play their home games at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium as a reward for the passion of the fans.

Speaking to Owngoalnigeria.com after the game that saw over 40,000 fans inside the 25,000 capacity stadium, Pinnick played down the stretching of the stadium’s capacity.

“I want to pay special tribute to the Kaduna state fans, they are passionate and a proof that our football is still alive, we spoke to them and they promised they won’t encroach during the game and true to their words they didn’t” He said.

“As long as there’s no encroachment during and immediately after the game I don’t see any reason why we making a meal out of it, Kaduna is our home, Eagles will come back here”.

Nigeria travel to Egypt on Monday for their Tuesday game against Egypt in Alexandria after the disappointment of failing to pick all three points in Kaduna they need to avoid defeat.

HOW NFF PRESIDENT PREVENTED STAMPEDE AT THE AHMADU BELLO STADIUM

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-163.jpg?resize=300%2C169
Much have been said about the capacity crowd at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium that watched Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Egypt with the only omission being the efforts of the president of the NFF to control the crowd which went a long way in preventing any form of chaos or stampede.

Amaju Pinnick came into the stadium one hour to the game but instead of taking his seat in the VIP section the NFF supremo headed straight to the fans gathered on the athletic track of the stadium in front of the perimeter fencing.

The Stadium which originally seats 25,000 had about 50,000 people in attendance and Pinnick showed his crowd control skills by pleading and even knelling to the fans to move backward which they did as oppose to the use of force the security operatives were earlier using to no avail.

Pinnick didn’t stop there he ensured the standing crowd were barricaded by security operatives to stop them from going close to the substitute bench of the Egyptians and his smart appeal to those who have no seat and where to stand bar the stadium track made them walk out of the stadium.

After the game he also ensured they were easily safely and gently vacated from the stadium and once again not with force which would have brought out some resistance but with cajoling and pep talks.

His use of words and not force went a long way in keeping the capacity crowd calm before, during and after the game.

SIASIA: WE DIDN’T CAP IWOBI TO STOP HIM FROM PLAYING FOR ENGLAND

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-153.jpg?resize=300%2C224
Interim coach of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia says Nigeria did not cap Alex Iwobi because of the pressure by England for him to switch allegiance to them.

The last few weeks they have been reports that England are trying to lure Iwobi to play for the three lions instead of Nigeria at senior level after his breakthrough at Arsenal this season.

Iwobi who has played for Nigeria in a friendly game was eligible for England until after today’s AFCON 2017 qualifiers where the 19 year old came on as a substitute canceling any hope England has in regards to luring him.

“We didn’t cap him because of the pressure on him to switch allegiance to England, we did so because we are convinced he can effect the game and he almost did with that pass to Moses that was cleared of the line” He said in his post match conference.

Why Egypt Boycotted Post Match Press Conference

https://allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/55699Musa.jpg
Egyptian Football Association member Ehab Hath has explained why the Pharaohs boycotted the mandatory press conference after their 1-1 draw with the Super Eagles in Kaduna.

Hath was agitated that the Zambian referee denied the Egyptians the chance to snatch a late winner after he blew the final whistle while the team was in possession.

“The rule is wrong and it was possible to come up with the winner , do not know why his decisions were counterproductive,”said Hath to filgoal.com.

“There are no sanctions against Egypt because of failure to attend the press conference and the observer agreed, that our security could not be guaranteed in light of the spectators that stormed the pitch after the game.”

More than 40,000 spectators witnessed the game between Nigeria and Egypt at theAhmadu Bello Stadium, which has a capacity of 25,000.

Manchester City Hail Impressive Iheanacho After Full Debut For Nigeria

https://allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/73261Kelechi.jpgEnglish Premier League club Manchester City monitored the African Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Egypt on Friday evening.

Their highly-rated striker Kelechi Iheanacho made his first-ever start for the Super Eagles, lasting 64 minutes on the pitch before he was replaced byOsmanlıspor frontman Aminu Umar.

The Super Eagles went in front on the hour mark courtesy of Oghenekaro Etebo, who scrambled home a rebound after Iheanacho had hit the woodwork.

“Impressive @67Kelechi played just over an hour as Mohamed Salah’s late goal for Egypt meant it finished 1-1 in Nigeria. #AFCON2017,” City posted on their official Twitter page.

Iheanacho has two caps for the senior national team, having made his official debut, off the bench, in a World Cup qualifier against Swaziland last November.

The Super Eagles have declared that they are disappointed with the outcome of the African Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt and have vowed to pick up the maximum points in the reverse fixture in Alexandria in three days time.

The Samson Siasia-led side wasted an excellent opportunity to overtake the North Africans in the standings after Mohamed Salah scored in the closing minutes due to a lack of concentration in the defense.

“We’re disappointed with the draw but our heads are unbowed. We’ll storm Alexandria, Egypt in high spirits.

“With your support, we’ll triumph,” the Super Eagles said in a statement.

After three rounds in Group G of African Cup of Nations qualification, Egypt lead the way with seven points followed by Nigeria who have garnered five points.

More than 40,000 spectators witnessed the encounter at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna on Friday evening but it is envisaged that 20,000 Egyptian fans will be permitted into the Borg El Arab Stadium on Tuesday.

The FA had written to the government to increase the number from 10,000 to 20,000 and the request was approved.

Egypt Coach Cuper : Nigeria Has Excellent Players, We Were Lucky To Get An Equalizer

Egypt National Team coach Héctor Cúper has admitted that his team were lucky to avoid defeat against Nigeria in an African Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday.

The former Inter Milan and Valencia manager added that the Pharaohs were not on the same level as the Super Eagles especially in the second half.

“Nigeria is very strong and has excellent players in all of the positions, they are in the big clubs who are playing in Europe,” Cuper told reporters.

“We had a wonderful first half but in the second half we made some mistakes and we were not on the same level but we will work to correct the errors before the next game.

“I do not deny that we were lucky to get an equalizer but it was a reward for our performance throughout the game.”

The Super Eagles will fly to Egypt on Monday for the return leg of the African Cup of Nations qualifier on March 29.

Oghenekaro Etebo Delighted To Score On Nigeria Debut

Ex-Warri Wolves star Oghenekaro Etebo was a surprise inclusion in the Super Eagles starting line-up against Egypt on Friday evening and repaid manager Samson Siasia’s faith by scoring on his competitive debut for the national team.

The new Clube Desportivo de Feirense acquisition was disappointed with the way the game panned out at the end, with Roma sensation Salah notching a late, late equalizer to give the Pharaohs a share of the spoils.

“I return all glory to God for my first senior international goal for the Nigeria Super Eagles, though the game ended 1-1.

“With God’shelp we will complete the task in Egypt,” Oghenekaro Etebo said.

Etebo has other things to worry about after the reverse fixture in Alexandria this coming Tuesday, with the attacking midfielder yet to resume training with Clube Desportivo de Feirense two months after agreeing terms with the Portuguese setup.

The 20-year-old is still processing his work permit visa to Portugal and was asked by the embassy to provide an additional document on Thursday, March 24.

Because of the public holidays, the visa could be ready by next week .

Alex Iwobi is delighted to have played his first competitive game for Nigeria, just as Victor Moses was left sad by Friday’s draw with Egypt, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

The 19-year-old Iwobi came in for Moses Simon in the closing stages of Nigeria’s 1-1 home draw against Egypt at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Friday.

Even though the result puts the Super Eagles in danger of missing out on the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations to be staged in Gabon, the Arsenal winger was really elated to take part in the game.

“Unlucky not to win but happy to have made my competitive debut for Nigeria,” he wrote on his Twitter handle.

“Would like to also thank England for giving me the chance to represent them.”

Meanwhile, Moses tweeted his frustration after the match. The West Ham forward who had a shot cleared off the line wrote: “Shame we couldn’t get the win today but the boys battled hard and we move on to Tuesday now.”

Nigeria will take on Egypt in the reverse fixture next week Tuesday in Alexandria.

The Super Eagles need to win the game to boost their chances of making it to Gabon 2017.

How Super Eagles Rated Vs Egypt

Comple tesportsnigeria.com's ADEBOYE AMOSU rates the Super Eagles after their 1-1 draw with Egypt in Kaduna…

Carl Ikeme 6/10
The Wolves goalkeeper made a brilliant save to deny Koka in the 18th minute. He was not at fault for the Pharaohs' equalising goal.

Stanley Amuzie 4/10
The left-back struggled to cope with the pace of Mohamed Salah and was the weakest link in Nigeria's defence.

GODFREY OBOABONA 6/10
Did well to curtail the Egyptian attackers until that unfortunate late minute strike by Mohamed Salah.

EFE AMBROSE 6/10
The Celtic defender did his defensive job well, though he was bit sloppy at times. He improved like the rest of the team in the second half.

SHEHU ABDULLAHI 5/10
An average performance from the right-back. He was a constant threat on the right side for Nigeria, but his final delivery was most times awful.

OGHENEKARO ETEBO 8/10
Played in an unfamiliar holding midfield role and put up a good showing in his debut appearance for the Super Eagles. He scored his side's only goal in the game.

KELECHI IHEANACHO 5/10
A subdued performance from the Manchester City youngster in what was his first start for the Super Eagles. Had a hand in Nigeria's only goal in the game though.

MIKEL OBI 6/10
Improved like the rest of the team after break and gave an above average performance in his first game as captain of the side.

AHMED MUSA 5/10
Started the game brightly, but fizzled out afterwards. He was duly replaced by Victor Moses in the second half.

MOSES SIMON 7/10
The Belgium-based winger was Nigeria's most potent attacking threat in the game. Contender for man of the match.

ODION IGHALO 5/10
The Watford forward was far from his best in the game. He missed a good chance to put his side ahead a minute before the break and was denied by the opposing goalkeeper in the second half.

SUBSTITUTES
AMINU UMAR 6/10
Took the place of Kelechi Iheanacho. He was lively when he came on and will surely push for a starting berth in the return fixture.

VICTOR MOSES 6/10
The pacy winger had a goal bound effort cleared off the line few minutes after replacing Ahmed Musa and troubled the Pharaohs's defence for the entire period he spent on the pitch.

ALEX IWOBI 4/10
The youngster proved his class after coming on late in the game. He is surely one for the future.

Ighalo: Nigeria’s AFCON Hopes Not Lost Yet

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-97.jpeg
By Johnny Edward In Kaduna:
Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, says Nigeria's hopes of qualifying for 2017 AFCON are not lost yet after their 1-1 draw with Egypt in Friday’s first leg encounter in Kaduna, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.

The Watford of England forward who reacted shortly after the first leg match said if the Pharaohs of Egypt could pick a draw here in Nigeria, the Super Eagles can as well go to Alexandra to pick a win.

Ighalo who scored the second goal in the Super Eagles 2-0 win over Chad in the Match Day One of the 2017 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, says it was painful allowing the Egyptians to share points with Nigeria in the match.

“We did not do badly, we gave our best, and you can see that from the way we played the match, but we were very unlucky to have ended the match 1-1,” says the Watford striker.

Ighalo adds: “Despite this result, I don’t want to believe that we are out yet. We are going to learn from this match and improved on that in the second leg in Alexandra. The hope of qualifying is still very much alive."

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles are expected to depart the country’s shores on Monday for the return leg match scheduled for Tuesday in Alexandria.

By Johnny Edward in Kaduna
Super Eagles coach Samson Siasia has blamed his defenders for the last-gasp equaliser his team conceded against Egypt in Friday's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier here in Kaduna.

He also slammed the Egyptian players for not playing to the rules of the game. The Super Eagles ‎were three minutes away from earning their first victory under Siasia but were denied by Mohamed Salah who was played onside by Godfrey Oboabona.

Siasia who‎se side now face a daunting task in the reverse fixture in Alexandra believes his side can still win. 'You don't leave a dangerous player like Salah alone," a frustrated Siasia told reporters moments after the 1-1 draw.

‎"I blame the defenders for their play. You don't lose concentration in the dying seconds of the game. "

Also the Egyptians were guilty of not playing to the rules. "It was fair play and ‎felt they should have abided by it."
