Now or never for Ighalo to fire with Super Eagles

The Watford man has made an unspectacular start to his international football career, and now is the time for him to prove his worth.

COMMENT By Solace Chukwu
Seventeen goals in 33 games in a debut season in the world’s biggest league has catapulted Odion Ighalointo the limelight, both locally and internationally.

However, his strike on Sunday afternoon against Arsenal in the FA Cup action was his first in eight games in all competitions.
Best vine @WatfordTalk @ighalojude https:// /JR6neRYBvQ— Conn (@Conn_Woolnough) March 14, 2016

There is a clear split in Ighalo's season, with Christmas time bringing sad tidings for the former Granada man. Three goals in 10 games since the New Year pales against 14 in 23 in 2015, a year that witnessed the rising of Ighalo’s star.
https://static.goal.com/di/E810E6CEE85FD968A5AFCDACBB70950D.jpg
It is not unusual for scoring rates to plummet in the second half of the season. Aside from the latent unsustainability of statistical freakishness, teams are more cautious at the business end of the season, as the gravitas of their position hits home. Be it chasing the title or European places, or seeking to avoid the ignominy of demotion, the reflex is to seek to eliminate errors, rather than score more goals.

It is even less surprising in the case of the Watford man, whose lack of proper variation in terms of skill and decision-making may make him easier to suss out as time passes. In that sense, his goal at the Emirates came at just the right time; with the Super Eagles slated to face Egypt in two weeks, it is vital that he rediscovers his scoring touch.

Ighalo vs. Arsenal |A much-needed goal

He will reunite with Samson Siasia for the task at hand, and lest it be forgotten, it was under the former Super Eagles forward that he first entered the Nigerian footballing system as a callow, if highly rated striker in 2009.

Following the abject, hurried, imprecise showings in front of goal in Egypt, the irony of Siasia having to once again rely on Ighalo is almost cruel. Naturally, the player has come on since then, even more so within the last 18 months, within which he has dominated England’s top two divisions with pace, power and opportunism. Still, the latest lull in form sows the kernel of doubt: was 2015 a fluke, an embellishment against the general backdrop of mediocrity that has hallmarked his career?

Ighalo |2015-16 EPL stats
It is a question with which the Super Eagles management will have to grapple, and one which cannot be waved away offhand.

His two international goals in five games since making his debut against Uganda in March is respectable enough, but really, in terms of opposition, there could hardly have been a kinder line-up: Uganda, Chad, Cameroon, and two ties against Swaziland.

Inevitably, some of his unease has been put down to the more competitive nature of international football, and having to function within a system that is yet to coalesce. This makes sense, but really, what does this signify effectively, apart from the fact international football is not for everyone? There simply is no time to bed in and adapt at that level – that is the nature of the beast; it is, as an excuse, illogical at best.
https://static.goal.com/di/6E991D47298B01876C59E97A8C357EEC.jpg
Can Ighalo demonstrate he's the right man to lead the line for Nigeria vs. Egypt?

For context, winger Moses Simon has taken rather more comfortably to the international scene, having made his debut in the same Uganda game: three goals have come in six starts from a wide position, almost cruelly showing up Ighalo’s limitations upfront. Only once have both players scored in the same game; ostensibly, with the Watford man struggling to influence proceedings, it is Simon who has stepped up with crucial interventions.

It is early days yet, granted.
That said, with Egypt looming at the end of the month, Siasia will hope that, unlike seven years ago when he wagered all on Ighalo and got burned, his faith is repaid handsomely this time.

Improbably, his back-up plan is the uncapped Fanendo Adi, a largely unknown quantity on these shores, albeit an effective presence in Major League Soccer.

History often repeats itself, and when it does, it is as tragedy.

NFF blasts Oliseh over players’ imposition claims

https://cdn.pmnewsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/chris-green-504x290.jpeg
Chris Green

The Nigeria Football Federation has rejected claims by former Super Eagles’ Coach, Sunday Oliseh that the NFF Technical and Development Committee tried to impose players on him.

Chairman of the NFF Technical and Development Committee, Chris Green, wondered when his Committee made moves to impose players on the former trainer.

“I can vouch for Felix Anyansi-Agwu, who was chairman of the committee before me, that he is not that type of person. I was made chairman on January 16 and traveled to Rwanda on January 17, when the team for the CHAN had been composed. The Super Eagles have not played any match since CHAN. So, when did we have time to try and impose players on him?

“We are not in anyway moved by his vituperations. He claims we did not provide him information with regards to Egypt, but how come we have been able to provide Siasia with the same? He should respect himself and move on.”

Green, a ranking member of the NFF Executive Committee, added: “We welcomed Oliseh with so much warmth and so much regard for his person. It is sad that he has failed to reciprocate, even at departure. He is simply full of too much talk.

“He should stop leapfrogging into unfamiliar territories, such as his mention of capacity–building program. That program was fully sponsored by corporate bodies and was never at the expense of anyone’s benefits.”
https://cdn.pmnewsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Sunday-Oliseh-504x285.jpg
Sunday Oliseh

Green made it clear that the NFF would soon write to Oliseh to demand a refund of the five million naira paid him in lieu of his accommodation in Nigeria, and the February 2016 salary (another five million naira) that should serve in lieu of his one–month notice of resignation.

He also sneezed at Oliseh’s self-adulation in claiming that he put Nigeria first in his work. “How did he put Nigeria first in everything he did showed in the way he abandoned ship with only weeks to crucial games.

“It is clear he wants to remain in the news for no other reason than to distract the NFF and the team from concentrating on these two crucial matches. It is very easy for people to grandstand and claim to be more patriotic and altruistic than others, but the true test remains what such people do when the chips are down.

“Oliseh showed a lack of heart in the way he left. And he was purely grandstanding when claiming some persons spoke to him to drop a law suit, when he knew from the beginning that he had no case.”

AF Nigeria Serie A 2015/2016 Zamalek
My Zamalek mates more dangerous than Salah warns Moruf Yusuf

Zamalek Nigerian midfielder Moruf Yusuf has warned that teammates Mostafa Fathy and Ayman Hefny are much more dangerous than Mohammed Salah, who most Nigerians consider as the biggest threat to the Super Eagles.

Nigeria welcome Egypt to Kaduna on March 25, before they are guests of the Pharaohs in Alexandria four days later in crucial AFCON 2017 qualifiers.

The talk has been all about AS Roma forward Salah, but Yusuf told AfricanFootball.com that this could well work against Nigeria as the seven-time champions boast of two dangerous wingers who on their own could wreck the Eagles.

"Egypt is not all about Mohammed Salah. All I have been hearing is Salah…Salah…but that will be a big mistake if we see Salah as the only threat from Egypt,” said Yusuf, who won the league and cup double with Zamalek last season.

"Egypt have good wingers who are skillful and fast. They are the dangerous ones Eagles must pin down, the likes of Mostafa Fathy and Ayman Hefny. They are far more dangerous than Salah as far as I am concerned."

On Wednesday, both Fathy and Hefny were named by Hector Cuper in the final Egypt squad for the showdown with Nigeria.
Zamalek have nine players on the 25-man squad.

On the news that he is being monitored by Nigeria for a possible Eagles call-up, the Zamalek midfielder said: "I feel good about that. Many of my friends have talked to me about the news. It will be a dream come true for me. I know there is time for everything."

[b].Mohamed Salah (AS Roma, Italy)
Egypt's superstar Mohamed Salah was outstanding for AS Roma in their 2-1 away win against Udinese at the Dacia Arena on Sunday.

The Pharaoh who is expected to be influential for Egypt in their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers Nigeria assisted Edin Dzeko's 15th minute opener though he was substituted in the 91st minute for Kevin Strootman.

Aside his assist, Salah made three key passes and had one shot on target. His heat map shows he touched the ball 68 times and completed 48 passes.

ATTACK
Samuel Eto'o (Antalyaspor,Turkey)
Four time African Footballer of the Year Samuel Eto'o scored a brace but also missed a penalty in Antalyaspor's 3-0 home win against Bursasporon Monday nightat the Antyla Stadium.

The Cameroon legend scored in the 68th and 89th minutes of the game which now takes his tally in the current league season in Turkey to 16 in 24 matches. He was however handed his fifth yellow card of the season in the 76th minute.

Eto'o's heat map shows that he touched the ball 52 times in 90 minutes. Three of his four shots were on target while he made one key pass. The skillful forward won one aerial duel and had 39 pass completion.

Odion Ighalo (Watford, England)
Super Eagles of Nigeria's Odion Ighalo had scored just one FA Cup and one Premier League goal prior to last Sunday's FA Cup quarter finals clash against holders Arsenal.

However the striker chose this occasion to break his duck as he scored the Hornets' first of two goals in a 2-1 victory at the Emirates.

Ighalo turned brilliantly with Gabriel marking him and fired a low shot past David Ospina in Arsenal goal in the 50th minute.

Though Ighalo hobbled off with a suspected thigh problem, he did enough to earn high ratings in the game.

The Nigerian played three shots and completed 16 of his passes (81.3%). He touched the ball 30 times before he was substituted.

Ighalo Partners Eto’O In African Team Of The Week

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/africaa.jpg
There were fantastic performances by African stars in various leagues and Cup competitions in Europe last weekend.

Completesportsnigeria .com's IZUCHUKWU OKOSI highlight the outstanding performers for this week's edition of African Team Of The Week series.

GOAL
Rais M'bolhi (Antalyaspor, Turkey)
Algeria keeper Rais M'bolhi was exemplary in Antalyaspor's 3-0 thrashing of Bursasporon Monday night.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper who has over 50 national team caps for the Desert Foxes was instrumental in his team's counter attacking moves as his long passes and distribution were key.
M'bolhi touched the ball 36 times and distributed at the rate of 75%.

DEFENCE
Lamine Gassama (Lorient, France)
Lamine Gassama was impressive in Lorient's 1-1 home draw against Olympique Marseille on Saturday though he was booked (yellow) in the 82nd minute.

The 25-year-old defender made four tackles, five interceptions and one clearance in the game. He committed two fouls.

It was his 25th Ligue 1 appearance of the season. He touched the ball 48 times, completed 35 of his passes and played seven long balls into the opposition half, four of them accurate.

Medhi Benatia (Bayern Munich, Germany)
Morocco's Medhi Benatia who had been dogged by injury is back fully fit and was a rock in Bayern Munich's defence as they romped to a 5-0 whitewash of Anthony Ujah's Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena.

Benatia stopped the Nigerian in his tracks in some of their 'battles' on Saturday. Both Africans played for 90 minutes over the weekend.

John Boye (Sivasspor, Turkey)
Black Stars of Ghana central defender John Boye had a good individual performance in Sivasspor's 1-0 win against Nigeria's Kenneth Omeruo's Kasimpasaon Monday night.

Boye was yellow-carded five minutes after the start of the second half but his defensive game was impressive. He made six tackles, 11 clearances but committed two fouls, one of them leading to his eighth booking in 17 league games.

MIDFIELD
Cheikhou Kouyate (West Ham, England)
Manchester United's Anthony Martial may have been awarded the official Man-of-the-Match prize in the FA Cup quarter final first leg clash between Man United and West Ham United which ended in a 1-1 draw but Cheikhou Kouyate was a shield for the Hammers in the defensive midfield role on Sunday.

The Senegalese made five defensive tackles, three interceptions and one clearance. He committed two fouls in the game and was fouled once himself whilst he drove forward with the ball. Kouyate completed 26 of his passes (88.5% accurate) and launched one long ball into the Red Devils half.

The draw forces a replay for both teams with the winner playing against Everton in the semi finals at Wembly Stadium next weekTuesday(March 22).

Kwado Asamoah (Juventus, Italy)
Black Stars of Ghana midfielder Kwado Asamoah was impressive in Juventus' 1-0 home win against Sassuoloon Friday eveningat the Juventus Stadium.

The midfielder had one shot on target and made two key passes. He was always driving forward with the ball and made one tackle and two interceptions.

The midfielder committed three fouls and was fouled once himself. Asamoah completed 30 of his passes (86.7% accurate).

Adlène Guédioura (Everton, England)
Algeria's Adlène Guédioura scored what could go down as one of the best goals in the history of the FA Cup on Sunday against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium with a 63rd minute thunderbolt that left David Ospina helpless.

The powerful strike was the Algerian's only shot in the game. He completed two dribbles and was fouled two times. He was however disposed five times.
Guédioura completed 19 of his passes.

The win ensured that Arsenal's hopes of a third successive FA Cup triumph was ruined.

Aminu Umar (Osmanlispor, Turkey)
Former Flying Eagles of Nigeria winger Aminu Umar continued his fine form for Turkish side Osmanlispor over the weekend as he scored a brace in a 3-2 away win against Istanbul Basaksehiron Saturday evening.

The pacey forward who was once on the books of Wikki Tourists of Bauchi scored in the 20th and 38th minutes. He also assisted a goal in the 84th minute scored by Senegal's Papa Alioune Ndiaye.

This performance earned him the Man-of-the-Match award, his third 'MOtM' award of the season. The double strike now takes his tally to three in the season after 19 league appearances.

His compatriot and another former Flying Eagles midfielder Raheem Lawal was in action in the game but was substituted in the 63rd minute.

Odibe Intensifies Relegation Fight For Romanian Club, Concordia

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-54.jpeg
By Johnny Edward:

Michael Odibe is confident that his Romanian side Concordia Chiajna will avoid relegation despite being stuck in the relegation playoff spot in the Romanian Liga 1.

Odibe has played four games for his side who currently sit sixth on the log, churning in one win, a draw and a defeat. And the player insists his self belief is as strong as ever.

"I think we'll be fine. I believe from now until the end of the season we will win a few games, because of the way we're playing, and the players we've got," Odibe who signed a three months contract with Concordia Chiajna began in a chat with Completesportsnigeria.com.

"The new signings will help in lifting us. But there's no point just saying we've got good players, you have to go out and perform.

The rewards are so big that the lads should enjoy that pressure, if they can, and make sure we kick on and try and win games.

"I think we just need to continue doing what we're doing. And it's important we stay positive, which we will do," Odibe told Completesportsnigeria.com.

The NFF has serious issues, no self respecting coach will endure them for long.
You can imagine, they didn't pay Coach Sunday Oliseh the 20Million Naira, but went ahead to publish same in national dailies. The worse of it all is that even when Oliseh kept telling them, he hasn't been paid persistently, they continued insisting he collected the money without facts. These people are not fit to manage our football. How I wish Oliseh did not withdraw the suit he filed against the NFF. I blame some of his close allies who persuaded him to drop the charges against "the most corrupt sports institution in Africa" The NFF needs to be exposed and probed.

PoliticsRe: Rivers Killings: Buhari Orders Security To Punish Sponsors by NLban: 2:03am On Mar 16, 2016
Ezenwammadu:
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Malabo condemned recent political violence in Rivers State, saying the killing of people over political differences was “primitive, barbaric and unacceptable”.
“We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have given the security services clear directives in this regard,” the president said.
There has been an upsurge of violence in the oil-rich state ahead of National and State Assembly rerun elections on Saturday.
The All Progressives Congress, Mr. Buhari’s party, accuses the Peoples Democratic Party-led Rives government of sponsoring and stoking violence against its members.
Some APC members have been killed and beheaded. The government says the violence was a result of a supremacy battle by cultists.
In his first public comments about the growing violence in Rivers State, Mr. Buhari said, “We will show that violence in any form will no longer be tolerated before, during or after elections.”
He spoke at an interactive meeting with Nigerians resident in Equatorial Guinea.

President Buhari said the Independent National Electoral Commission will be encouraged to explore the possibility of allowing Nigerians abroad vote in the 2019 general elections.
Noting that some African countries have started allowing their citizens resident abroad to vote in national elections, the president said he fully empathised with the desire of Nigerians in the diaspora to vote in national elections.
President Buhari pledged that he would therefore do all within his powers to fulfil that desire.
“I want all Nigerians to know that I respect them and their right to choose their leaders,” he said
The president also said that establishing a new national airline was not currently on the Federal Government’s list of priorities.
President Buhari declared that his administration’s main area of focus now was reducing the level of poverty in the country.
The president said that developing the infrastructure needed to boost production in all sectors of the economy and create more jobs for young Nigerians, as well as other actions that will directly improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians will continue to be prioritized by his administration.
President Buhari was responding to complaints by members of the Nigerian community about the absence of direct flights between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.
The president assured them that his administration’s war against corruption will remain “fearless, relentless and merciless”.
“We will be merciless and relentless in pursuing all those who abused public trust. Nigerians will see how some of the elite conspired to run the nation down,” he said.
http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/200194-buhari-breaks-silence-vows-decisive-punishment-sponsors-rivers-killings.html

Buhari is a bloody liar, are the killings in Rivers State more deadlier than the ones in Benue State perpatrated by his Fulani brothers?

Why didn't he break silence on those ones too?

Odion Ighalo has admitted that he is racing to be fit for Watford’s Premier League clash against Stoke City on March 19 after sustaining a muscle injury in the Hornets 2-1 victory against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The Super Eagles striker had to be substituted eight minutes from time against the Gunners at the Emirates and will miss training for at least two days with the hope that he will be in good shape to face the Potters at the Vic.

“I think I will be fine for the weekend game, I just need to rest two or three days and see how it goes.”

Ighalo’s present condition will be bad news for Nigeria coach Samson Siasia, who is banking on the Watford number 24 to lead his frontline in the national team’s African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Egypt in eleven days time.

The 26-year-old netted his 16th goal of the season against Arsenal after going seven straight games without scoring.

By Izuchukwu Okosi:

Super Eagles and FC Ifeanyi Ubah forward, Bright Onyedikachi, says he now regrets being dropped from the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming matches against Egypt by Samson Siasia due to poor showing in a friendly match with Katsina United.

Onyedikachi told Completesportsnigeria.com he was looking forward to playing against the Pharaohs of Egypt in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month, but will not be discouraged by the coach's decision to drop him.

Interim Super Eagles coach, Samson Siasia, asked six home-based players to leave camp after their poor outing in a friendly against Katsina United FC on Thursday and the player who was in Nigeria's team to the 2016 Africa Nations Championship in Rwanda bared his mind to Completesportsnigeria.com.

"Egypt is one of the best sides in Africa, and we all looked forward to the games against them. I did not meet up to expectation in the friendly, and has been demoted to the U-23 Eagles.

"I was feeling hurt, but I see it as a challenge. I'm now focusing on the U-23 Eagles friendly against Brazil next week," Onyedikachi told Completesportsnigeria.com. ‎

"Brazil is equally a big game, and I hope to do well so I can return to the senior national team at some point soon.

Sunday Oliseh

by Samm Audu

It has been confirmed that Nigerian sports minister Solomon Dalung will be present when the country’s former coach Sunday Oliseh appears before the House of Representatives sports committee in Abuja on Thursday.

Oliseh is expected to give his own version to why he suddenly quit his post with just a month to crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

“The sports minister has insisted he be part of the committee’s hearing and so he will be in attendance on Thursday,” a sports ministry official informed.

The sports minister ordered Oliseh not to be sacked when Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick presented a recommendation of the technical committee that the coach be fired.

The NFF have maintained this briefing is a major distraction as the Super Eagles are preparing for must-win AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

Is 'Jay Jay' Okocha Nigeria's next coach?

Jay Jay Okocha

by Samm Audu

AfricanFootball.com has again scooped that former Nigeria skipper Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha is being proposed to work with a foreign coach when Samson Siasia would have completed his temporary charge of the Super Eagles.

“’Jay Jay’ is now being proposed as Eagles assistant coach by the time Siasia has ended his temporary mandate,” a source informed AfricanFootball.com

“He will work with a foreign coach to be appointed by the NFF.”

NFF president Amaju Pinnick recently declared that Oliseh will be the last Nigerian coach for the Eagles as a foreign handler will soon be named substantive coach of the national team.

Frenchman Herve Renard turned down an offer to handle Nigeria before he bagged a deal with Morocco, while top NFF officials were believed to have sounded out Uganda coach Micho, who is Serbian.

Okocha first sought to be named assistant coach when Sunday Oliseh was about to be announced as the country’s coach in place of Stephen Keshi last year.

The legendary midfielder’s name also came up for discussion during the most recent NFF technical committee meeting in Abuja which produced Siasia as interim coach for the two AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

However, ‘Jay jay’ and Nwankwo Kanu were both not considered because they do not have coaching badges.

The former PSG and Bolton Wanderers star was until recently chairman of the NFF technical study group.

He is also chairman of the Delta Football Association.

Watford Striker Odion Ighalo

by Samm Audu

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo has assured he will be fit for Watford’s Premier League game against Stoke City on Saturday even after he limped out of the Cup tie against Arsenal at the weekend.

Ighalo limped out before the end of the FA Cup quarterfinal win over Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday.

The injury must have raised the blood pressure of both Watford and Nigeria fans ahead of crucial games this month.

However, the striker has now said he only suffered a minor knock and he will be fit when Stoke City visit Vicarage Road on Saturday.

“I just need two days to rest and some massage and I will be ready for the weekend’s game,” said Ighalo, whose opening goal propelled Watford to reach the FA Cup semi-final at the expense of holders Arsenal.

Watford Striker Odion Ighalo

by Samm Audu

Nigeria striker Odion Ighalo ended a month-long goals drought in style as he struck to propel Watford to a first-ever Wembley FA Cup semi-final at the expense of cup holders Arsenal.

However, Nigeria fans will be hoping Ighalo is not seriously injured ahead of crucial AFCON qualifiers against Egypt as he was forced to limp out of the game before the end.

Watford historic win ended Arsenal 16-game unbeaten run in the FA Cup as the London club have not lost in the cup competition since February 2013.

Arsenal can also not match the record of Blackburn Rovers of winning the cup for three straight years.

Ighalo hit target in the 50th minute when he half turned before he unleashed an unstoppable shot beyond the goalkeeper.

Algeria’’s Adlene Guediora then doubled Watford lead with another superb strike on 63 minutes, before Arsenal pulled a goal back for the game to end 2-1.

Interestingly, Egypt midfielder Elneny started for Arsenal and was later replaced by Nigeria youngster Alex Iwobi, who has also been called up for the Nigeria vs Egypt AFCON showdown.

REVEALED: New Nigeria foreign coach to earn $50,000 a month

by Samm Audu

Broke Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are willing to pay a new foreign coach $50,000 a month, which is double what former coaches Stephen Keshi and Sunday Oliseh were paid.

The NFF have already been sounding out several candidates for the top coaching post.

Former Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia coach Herve Renard and Uganda coach Micho have already been approached in the last few weeks.

And former Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen is the latest to be contacted by the NFF, according to top sources.

Le Guen has been without a job since November when he was sacked by Oman.

NFF president Amaju Pinnick has declared Oliseh will be the last local man to lead the Super Eagles and has made it clear an expatriate should pilot the Eagles after the temporary deal handed Samson Siasia.

Siasia is expected to revert to his post as the country’s Olympic team after the AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

The country's coaches association have already dared Pinnick on his move to hire a foreign coach for the Eagles.

Super Eagles invitee Umar Aminu posted a man-of-the-match display for his Turkish Super League club Osmanlispor when they beat hosts Istanbul BB 3-2 as he netted two goals and provided an assist.

Aminu's last goal before Saturday was a brace against Galatasaray on January 23rd in another 3-2 win.

He has now scored five goals this season.

The Nigeria U23 striker has been called up by coach Samson Siasia for an AFCON double-header against Egypt later this month.

The former Samsunspor striker opened the scoring in the 20th minute and restored his team’s lead in the 38th minute.

He went on to assist super sub Pape Alloune Ndiaye for the winner in the 84th minute.

Raheem Lawal played for Osmanlispor for 63rd minute, when he was replaced by Pape Alloune Ndiaye.

Arsenal Manager Wenger Wary Of Threat Posed By Odion Ighalo

https://www.allnigeriasoccer.com/football_pics/61990Ighalo1.jpg
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is wary of the threat posed by Odion Ighalo and his strike partner Troy Deeney ahead of Sunday afternoon’s FA Cup clash between his side and Watford at the Emirates.

The pair have plundered 24 goals between them in all competitions in the ongoing campaign, with the Nigeria international accounting for 15 of those strikes.

“They have two strikers who are very efficient in Ighalo and Deeney and we worked very hard to control the game [last time we played them],” Wenger told arsenal.com.

“They have a very good understanding between their strikers and the quality between our two centre backs will be vital on Sunday.

“Watford have done extremely well. It looks like the Championship teams that come up now deal very well with the Premier League regime.”

Odion Ighalo has failed to find his scoring boots in recent matches, and has played seven games on the trot for the Hornets without finding the net.

His last competitive goal was his match-winner against Nottingham Forest in the fourth round of the FA Cup on January 30 at The City Ground.

Victor Moses In Frame To Feature For West Ham Against Manchester United

Victor Moses,25, is in line to feature for the fourth time in the Emirates FA Cup on Sunday in West Ham’s clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford, manager Slaven Bilic has announced.

The Super Eagles creator sat out the last two matches contested by the Hammers in the Premier League, against Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, due to a a quadriceps injury he picked up in training.

But the good news, especially for the national team handlers, is that Moses trained without suffering any discomfort ahead of West Ham’s trip to M16 0RA.

Bilic told reporters at Friday’s press conference : “Victor Moses, Enner Valencia and Joey O’Brien are all back, Winston is training with us today after a week training individually with the physios.”

Moses missed the third round FA Cup tie against Wolves because he was still recovering from a hamstring complaint, started the fourth round game against Liverpool and went the distance against Blackburn Rovers in the last round.

EXCLUSIVE: EAGLES COACH.. WHY WE DROPPED AGGREY,BASSEY AND OTHERS

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-64.jpg?resize=300%2C199
A member of the techincal crew of the Super Eagles has revealed to owngoalnigeria.com the reasons why five home based players were dropped from the team camp ahead of the 2017 AFCON qualifiers against Egypt.

Defender Christopher Madaki of Giwa FC, Oke Ogagatewho of Sunshine Stars,Midfielder Yau Hassan of Wikki Tourist, striker Prince Aggrey of Kano Pillars and Ezekiel Bassey of Enyimba were all released by the coach Samson Siasia lead crew.

“Madaki we are well aware of his abilities but looking at the options we have in the area of full backs he didn’t quite convince us he will be up to challenge the options we have in Elderson Echiejile and Stanley Amuzie don’t forget Chibuzor Okonkwo can also play there” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“Oke Ogagatewho started very well but during one of our test games against the U-23s he was off the pace and left us with no option than to release him.

“Aggrey and Bassey in all of our test games particularly against Kastina United failed to live up to what we expected and considering the forwards we expecting to have in camp, there performances didn’t do them well at all”.

“Yau Hassan all though he didn’t do too bad he was however way behind Ifeanyi Matthew in the midfield role and with all due respect to him we have Ogenyi Onazi,Azubuike Okechukwu,Mikel Obi and Shehu Abdullahi to come, so we decided not to waste his time”

He however said Bright Onyedikachi showed enough promise to warrant him to be sent to the U-23s as exemplified by the goal he scored against the U-23s during one of their short test games.

FASHANU: EVEN PEP GUARDIOLA WILL STRUGGLE TO GET RESULT IF HE WORKS WITH THE NFF

https://i2.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-68.jpg?resize=300%2C225
Former Wimbledon of England forward John Fashanu says the problem of Nigeria football has gone beyond the coaches as the structure under which the coaches work is not firm enough to achieve results.

Reacting to divergent views on the issue of if a foreign coach or indigenous coach is best for Nigeria, the outspoken former England international insist the problem lies with the Nigeria Football Federation and the entire sports structure in the country.

“To me our case has gone beyond indigenous or foreign coach as even Pep Guardiola will struggle to get results with the way the NFF is presently structured, they appear to be no clear cut programme for the coaches to succeed” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“As we speak all arms of our national team are poorly motivated, coaches are not left out as well, you look around and ask where is the scouting department of the NFF? If they have what are they actually doing.

“Yes we have a technical committee but how technical are they? What information can they reliably pass to the coaches ahead of games even if they do will the coaches respect their input, so many questions begging to be answered.

“And even if we like it or not such little inputs play a big role in helping any coach succeed on their part the ministry of Youth,Sports and Culture need to do more they appear to have gone to sleep or they don’t even know their primary assignment.

“They are suppose to be the body that organises grassroot competition, school games and more where fresh talents will be discovered for upward promotion to the main team not until all of this are put in place it’s almost impossible for a coach to succeed be it local or foreign”.

EXCLUSIVE: ENUGU RANGERS GOALKEPPER COULD GATECRASH EAGLES SQUAD FOR EGYPT TIE

https://i0.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/image-7.jpg?resize=300%2C225
According to leaks gathered by owngoalnigeria.com the duo of Super Eagles first choice goalkeppers Carl Ikeme and Daniel Akpeyi could have a new challenge for the shot stopper role of the Super Eagles.

Emmanuel Daniel the Nigeria U-23 shot stopper is reportedly set to come into the senior national team setup as the 22 year old who is suppose to be in goal for the Olympic team in their friendly against Brazil in Rio didn’t submit his passport for visa application.

The Enugu Rangers goalkepper we gathered was not asked to submit his passport by the coaches hence he won’t travel with the U-23 to Brazil meaning his chances of making the match day squad of the Super Eagles in their back to back AFCON 2017 tie is a possibility.

However Daniel must still face up to the challenge of displacing Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Femi Thomas both locally based players as well before dreaming of upstaging the foreign duo of Carl Ikeme and James Okwuosa.

Aside his fine form in camp he is the youngest among the goalkeppers called up by interim coach of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia who also doubles as the head coach of the U-23s where Daniel is the undisputed first choice.

Siasia believes Daniel in the future will be the number one goalkepper for the Eagles and wants the succession plan to start now going by the fact that all other goalkeppers of the Eagles are about same age and they might leave the scene almost at same time.

Former Nigeria youth international Uche Agbo scored the winner for Granada B to help them beat Real Jean 1-0 in a Spanish second division game.

Agbo originally a member of the main team at Granada has so far made more appearances with the B team campaigning in the second division than the main team where his Nigerian compatriot Isaac Success is thriving.

His goal scored in the 12th minute was his second for the B team in 20 games this season while in his 6 games for the main team he has no goal to his name.

However his discipline is one that is rare for a forward as he has been booked 8 times while playing for the B team and thrice in his six games with the main team.

He represented Nigeria at the World Youth Championship that was held in Turkey in 2013 and has been on the books of Granada for 5 seasons now without really lighthing things up.

In the over 60 games he has played for Granada he only has four goals to his name.

Following the Fifa Women’s Football and Leadership Conference, Goal asked three African players what they want from the sport's governing body

International Women’s Day (IWD) was marked by the footballing community by a gathering of the sport’s top female football stars and leaders at the Fifa Women’s Football and Leadership Conference in Switzerland. The event gave a platform to the sallow but rising hope of women and female players around the world.

The successful event, titled ‘Equality Through Reform’, was geared towards planning how to take women’s football to the next level.

Goal reached out to some African players involved to collate their demands from the Confederation of African Football (Caf) in bid to improve the women's game in Africa.

Liverpool Ladies striker Asisat Oshoala, the only African featured as a panellist in Zurich, Equatorial Guinea defender Tobiloba Windapo, and Cameroon midfielder Carine Ndum all agreed to speak to us about the vision of the conference and any progress made.

The trio appealed to Africa’s footballing body to provide improved competitions and increased recognition for the women's game.

Here are their testimonies:
https://static.goal.com/di/F1EFB549FB579C97805E4E7E5B6F3A72.jpg
Asisat Oshoala: "There is a lot to ask from Caf because we lack a lot too as women footballers. Caf needs to engage more women in football administration. We want a good league organization structure like that of the men. We should have our own Africa U-17, U-20 cup competitions, and not only the World Cup that we see for our youth age groups.

We can also have a women’s Champions League in Africa, where the champions of every country will battle for trophy. We want more investment in the league and domestic competition so as to make it attractive and rewarding, like the men. Caf can always get sponsors for the female leagues just as they get sponsors for the African Women Cup of Nations (Awcon).

These are little things that can improve women's football in Africa.”
https://static.goal.com/di/8D43229AFE5718AA5FE35397C88FBA65.jpg
Tobiloba Windapo, Equatorial Guinea and Confluence Queens defender : "Africa is one of the continents that has produced the most talented female footballers, and is among top continents playing a great role in the development of the football in the men's category.

But it is still behind in women's football.

Africa needs more women’s competitions to help develop the ladies’ football and bring greater awareness to the continent. Caf should use their powerful office to attract women's football development in Africa, as such an event will help plant and promote grassroots programmes for talented female footballers. Africa has a great population of talents should not be neglected.

Caf should invest more in women’s football at the age-grade levels, because Africa has more bright prospects with the female than the male at the international level.

Caf needs not focus their attention only on male football, but also on the females, by organizing competitive youth competitions for the under 13s, 17s and 20s. The organizing of only the African Women’s Championship with no age-grade competition, is a major reason why the continent has not done well at the World Cup, even as the age-grade World Cups.

With all these steps, I think women football in Africa will take a new shape and attract huge benefits.”
https://static.goal.com/di/029238D400B229174A8DDAC2F8D34993.jpg
Carine Ndum, Cameroon and Atasehir Belediyespor midfielder: "Women’s football in Africa is in an ugly state. It's not encouraging at all and it is neglected by Caf. There are no sponsors and no recognition, and countries in Africa lack quality and solid women’s leagues.

Africa has talented female footballers, and Caf should support and help develop the game, but I'm confident, considering the increasing rate of stars from the continent dominating big clubs in Europe, that better days are here. Africa will be the best place to enjoy your football career.

It is a shame we don't even have age-grade competitions on the continent except for World Cup qualifying series and Africa Women Championship. Caf should increase the number of teams in Awcon and also add more competitions to women just like men too not only Nations Cup and World Cup. If this is done, Caf will keep the women as busy as the men.
https://static.goal.com/di/9937DBFEFB8C87A989E6F22E850D566B.jpg
No African country has hosted a Women's World Cup at any level, and to date, Africa is the only continent without any age-grade championships for women, with these having been replaced with qualifying series for the U17, U20 Women's World Cups.

The continent’s rich seam of female talent will be hoping that these players’ clarion call will prompt a change in approach for Caf.

Salah would be a handful for Eagles — Cuper

Egypt national soccer coach, Hector Cuper is brimming with confidence that his foreign-based stars can get one over a Super Eagles side still coming to terms with their abrupt exit of Coach Sunday Oliseh.

With just about 12 days to the potentially decisive March 25 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Nigeria at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna, Egypt, who top Group C with six points from two games as against Eagles haul of four points are desperate to qualify for the continent’s flagship tournament since their last appearance in 2010, which they won.

In an interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm, Cuper tipped his foreign stars like Mohamed Salah of Roma and Mohamed Elneny of Arsenal to bring their wealth of experience to bear in the looming tago with Eagles. “Salah and Eleny would prove a handful for the Nigerians.

I am sure their wealth of experience playing for two top teams in Europe will count over the two matches against the Eagles”, said the Argentine-born coach. Cuper praised Salah as “an exemplary professional, who excels with his own club and replicates his performance with the national side. That’s quite proven by the number of goals he scored in the World Cup qualifiers to top the scoring charts. He’s exactly like Amr Zaki and Mohamed Zidan who were impressing with both their respective foreign clubs and Egypt.”

Siasia: I’m yet to see hunger in Eagles

Super Eagles head coach Samson Siasia has challenged the Super Eagles home stars to show they can be relied on to deliver the goods in crucial matches whenever the need arises. “We have to step up our commitment level and show more seriousness,” the Coach opened up to his players.
