Afcon Trophy

By Lirpa Loof

The west African nation has said it would return to the qualifiers and hopes that Caf would accept its plea in order to avoid paying a $20,000 fine

In a twist of fate that could yet bring succour to Nigeria and Tanzania, the Chadian Football Federation has rescinded its decision to withdraw from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers if Caf would accept it back.

The Chadians announced this news via their official website on Thursday evening, four days after they threw Group G into disarray with their decision to drop out of qualifying due to financial constraints.

Looking at the financial implications of withdrawing which has attracted a $20,000 fine from Caf, the Chad federation said it thought it wise to remain in the competition rather than spend the money on a fine.

“We will return to qualifying and we regret any logistics problems that this might have caused Caf, our fellow group opponents and our fans,” a statement from the general secretary of the Chadian Football Federation, Amadou Keita Chaibou, read.

“It is our hope that this return will help us avoid more sanctions seeing that our poor country cannot afford to pay $20,000 when we claim not to have money for flights and accommodation.

“We also hope that it would not affect our plans to qualify for the World Cup in 2018 so we have returned like prodigal sons wishing that Caf will accept our plea.”

However, the decision on whether to accept Chad back to the competition would be made by the Caf Competitions Board in the next few hours.

It is good news for Nigeria and Tanzania who had given up on qualifying for Gabon 2017 due to the soar away success of the resurgent Egyptians.

Now, any one of the two sides could still garner enough points to finish in second place and with points high enough to see them through to Afcon 2017 as one of two best second-placed sides.

Well done to the Coaching Crew and the Players! We are out of AFCON, but I think we shouldn't bash the Players nor their Coaches! They are called into the frame when the damage is already being done by Oliseh! They are patriotic and did the Nation proud far away in the North Africa!
Up Super Eagles!!!

Well said Sir. This is not the time for us to trade blames, but to ask ourselves sincere and positive questions. A critical analysis of the situation we find ourselves in is what we must not ignore. The ward forward is what is important.

Our players were not disgraced. The side that showed the greater hunger for victory carried the day.
Up Super Eagles, we shall rise again.

Flush out bad Fulani herdsmen, Sen. Sani tells Fulani leaders

https://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Senator-Shehu-Sani-504x336.jpg
Senator Shehu Sani

Senator Shehu Sani (APC-Kaduna Central) on Monday urged leaders of Fulani herdsmen to flush out bad elements amongst them to regain their respect in the society.

Sani, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic Debt, gave the task during a visit to a Fulani settlement in Rafin Roro in Kasuwa Magani, Kajuru local government area of the state.

The senator urged leaders of the herdsmen to identify and flush “those who are discrediting them and giving them bad name”.

Besides, he enjoined them to stop what he described as “vengeful attacks” and embrace dialogue or report grievances to constituted authorities.

According to him, such acts are tarnishing the image of the ethnic Fulani and sending the wrong message of who the Fulanis are. “The issue of Fulani herdsmen has become a national issue in Nigeria with economic, political, social, security and ecological dimensions which need to be addressed.

“I am very concerned about the activities of very few of them who have been involved in violence in parts of the country.

“Fulani are peaceful and resourceful people who need all the necessary support to be able to cater for themselves and contribute to the socio-economic development of the country,” the legislator said.

The senator said he had proposed a bill to the National Assembly for the establishment of a Nomadic Development Commission.

He said the essence of the bill was to establish an agency of government that would be directly involved in supporting the Fulani herdsmen, their rehabilitation and empowerment.

“The bill is going to be modelled in the way we have modelled the Niger Delta Development Commission.

“The bill will empower the commission to support them, empower them and give them technical support.

“It will also enable them to set up ranches with which they can cater for their livestock without trespassing into farm lands that will lead to break down of law,” Sani said.

The lawmaker donated N1 million as short term measure to be used to provide a ranch for grazing as well as empower the women in the community and promised to build a clinic in the village.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the North West Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Ahmadu Suleiman, commended the senator for the initiative.

But Suleiman urged government for more well equipped nomadic schools, saying the existing schools were ill-equipped.

“We thank Sen. Sani and appeal to government for more well equipped schools.

“We assure you that our people are peace loving and will work for the development of Nigeria,” Suleiman said.

EXCLUSIVE: MIKEL AND IGHALO MAKE OFFER TO TREAT DISABLE SUPER EAGLES FAN

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-173.jpg?resize=300%2C188
According to Abubakar Haruna Gurugu a disable fan of the Super Eagles Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel and Watford star Odion Ighalo have both promise to foot his bill for him to have treatments.

“Abu Gurugu” as he is fondly called was struck by Polio at a very young age and despite not being able to use his legs still date he still didn’t lost his love for the Nigeria senior national team.

Video footage of Mikel and the teen disable fan chatting on the stadium track went after Nigeria’s game against Egypt went viral on social media and the excited disabled who crawled his way into the heart of the players of the Super Eagles appears to have gotten a solution to cure his disability.

Against all odds he crawled his way into the over 40,000 crowd at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium not minding if he gets trampled upon and watched the entire game on Friday.

The 11 year old told owngoalnigeria.com in a chat that Mikel and Odion Ighalo have made contact with his guardian regarding his treatment.

“I spoke with Mikel for three days before the game he promised me they will beat Egypt so after the game I went to ask him what went wrong and he explained to me, I felt like crying” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“Mikel is so humble and nice he speaks Hausa fluently and him and Ighalo have made contact with my family to see how they can help me get better treatment please help me pray for Allah to continue to bless and guard them” He concluded.

EXCLUSIVE: SIASIA SET TO AXE IHEANACHO, SIMON AND AMUZIE FROM STARTING LINE UP

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-171.jpg?resize=300%2C208
According to leaks gathered by owngoalnigeria.com interim manager of the Super Eagles Samson Siasia is planning on dropping the trio of Moses Simon,Stanley Amuzie and Kelechi Iheanacho from his starting line up against Egypt in tomorrow’s must win AFCON 2017 qualifiers.

While a decision have been reached on dropping Kelechi Iheanacho following his poor peformance against Egypt, the duo of Moses Simon and Stanley Amuzie will mostly likely not be in the starting line up on the ground of experience.

We gathered the coach is going for experience as he expects the atmosphere to be fully charged at the Borg El Arab stadium in Alexandria which might be too much for the young players to take.

Nigeria know only a victory in Alexandria can guarantee them a spot in next year AFCON and as such are not taking anything for granted regarding the game.

The team will arrive Egypt this afternoon and have their first session on the pitch later in the evening.

BREAKING: EGYPT EMBASSY DENIES NIGERIA SUPPORTERS CLUB VISA

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-174.jpg?resize=300%2C200
The Nigeria Football Supporters Club won’t be in Alexandria to cheer the Nigeria national team when they take on the Egyptian team in an AFCON 2017 qualifiers group G game.

Super Eagles need an outright victory against Egypt in Alexandria to qualify for next year AFCON but they might have to do that without the presence of their passionate singing fans.

President of Nigeria Football Supporters Club Dr. Rafiu Ladipo told owngoalnigeria.com on phone that the move is a deliberate attempt by the embassy to frustrate the Eagles.

“This is a delberate ploy to frustrate us and stop us from supporting our team, it’s not good for the spirit of fair play but with or without us they will fall in Alexandria by the grace of God” He told Owngoalnigeria.com

However the president general insist they will mobilise their members in Egypt as well as Nigerians residing in the country to be at stadium and cheer the team.

IHEANACHO RATED MAN CITY BEST ALTERNATIVE TO AGUERO AHEAD OF BONY

https://i2.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/image-67.jpg?resize=300%2C161
This time last year striker Kelechi Iheanacho had only just begun representing Manchester City’s youth teams. Right now, the 19-year-old is arguably Manuel Pellegrini’s most effective impact player.

He is seemingly a lucky charm. In the 414 minutes of BPL action the Nigerian has experienced so far (three starts, 17 substitute appearances) he has only twice seen City’s scoreline go downhill while he has been on the pitch. On both occasions his side were already trailing to Liverpool when he entered the fray.

Alternatively, in six different matches, Man City have seen an up lift in terms of the score during the period Iheanacho has been involved; and he netted crucial winning goals against Crystal Palace and Swansea City.

The youngster’s sprightliness has undoubtedly been a contributing factor.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s first BPL goal was a late winner at Crystal Palace

Although it is easier to sustain an energetic approach when coming off the bench, his sharp movement has the tendency to make something happen. When you compare the number of explosive runs he makes to fellow understudy Wilfried Bony, the difference is clear.

Scoring six times in cup competitions, as well as netting three BPL goals, Iheanacho is also calm in front of goal.

One criticism would be that he does not put himself into goalscoring positions enough. He has only taken on seven shots – but there can be no doubting that he is a natural finisher. Statistically at least, the teenager is by some distance Man City’s most lethal shot-taker.

EXCLUSIVE..EGYPT FA: THE CROWD INTIMIDATED OUR PLAYERS AND THE REFEREE

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-163.jpg?resize=300%2C169
A member of the Egyptian FA has blamed the mammoth crowd for the inability of their players to play to their potential and questionable calls made by the referees during Egypt’s 1-1 draw with Nigeria.

The AFCON 2017 qualifiers game saw over 50,000 people crammed into the 25,000 Ahmadu Bello Stadium and that according to a member of the Football association in Egypt unsettled both the referee and their players.

“Our players played with fear, the crowd was intimidating to say the least, when we came out for warm up our players were busy looking at those on the floodlight and scoreboard, it was scary” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“In the dressing room we had players asking us if the security can protect them if they win as the crowd was way too much even the referee was moved by it, he was heavily intimidated and it was all because of the crowd.

“He made so many questionable calls that went against us but we on our part understand that only a mad man won’t favour a team with such amount of supporters”.

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-172.jpg?resize=300%2C203
Chippa United net minder Daniel Akpeyi says he is ready to fill in for goalkepper Carl Ikeme who is suspended for Tuesday all important AFCON 2017 qualifiers against Egypt.

Akpeyi will battle Nigeria CHAN 2016 safe hands Ikechukwu Ezenwa for the number one spot in Ikeme’s absence when the Super Eagles take on Egypt in Alexandria.

“Have been around the team for a while so am not new to the set-up neither am I jittery about the task of filling in for Ikeme” He told owngoalnigeria.com.

“Though it’s a sad thing to be without Ikeme in a game of this magnitude but that’s why the coach called up three goalkeppers and whoever get the nod to start in Egypt will definitely not let Nigerians down” He concluded.

SUPER EAGLES PLAYERS REACT TO CHAD WITHDRAWL FROM AFCON 2017 RACE

https://i1.wp.com/owngoalnigeria.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-171.jpg?resize=300%2C208
Players of the Super Eagles have reacted to the withdrawal of Group G rivals Chad from the AFCON 2017 qualifiers which leaves them with just two points.

The players gave their reactions to owngoalnigeria.com earlier today unanimously agreeing to the fact that they are left with no margin for error in the game against Egypt.

Efe Ambrose: “It still doesn’t change anything as we were two points behind Egypt before Chad pulled out same as now it only make the game against Egypt a must win which by the grace of God is possible”

Moses Simon: “We have to beat Egypt in Alexandria, there’s no way around it by the special grace of God and with the quality we have we will do just that in Alexandria”.

Ifeanyi Matthew: “Honestly the news came to me as a shock but I believe there’s very little we can do about it all we have to do is turn up and beat Egypt in Alexandria, it’s a task we can accomplish’

Shehu Abdullahi: “Insha Allah we will get the result we need in Egypt with all due respect to them Chad pulling out has left us with no choice than to win them in Egypt which is achievable”

Etim Matthew: “Victory in Egypt is now a must, we can’t afford to take chances, we have the coaches who can make it work and the players who can also execute the task, we pray for God guidance in Alexandria on Tuesday”

FASTEST GOAL | Chinedu Obasi holds the record for scoring the quickest goal in games involving these two sides. His 12th-minute strike was, however, insufficient to secure the victory, as Egypt won 3-1 in a Africa Cup of Nations encounter on January 10, 2010 at the Estadio Nacional de Ombaka, Benguela.

PENALTIES | Stephen Keshi has also scored the most penalties in previous encounters between Nigeria and Egypt. First, in a 1-1 friendly draw on February 20, 1983 in Kaduna, and then on March 14 1984 in an Afcon game which ended 2-2.

Nigerian Skipper Mikel Obi

Nigeria skipper Mikel Obi has said tonight’s AFCON decider against Egypt in Alexandria reminds him of when the Super Eagles had their backs to the wall and also had to win in Nairobi, Kenya, in 2009 to qualify for the 2010 World Cup.

The Eagles scraped a 3-2 win in Nairobi to qualify for their fourth World Cup.

“We are in the same situation now as we were then going to Nairobi. I just have it in my mind that it can be done, that we have done it before,” remembered Mikel, who along with Elderson Echiejile, is the only survivor on the squad in Egypt.

“Yes, we will go out there on Tuesday night and do exactly what we have to do: fight. It is not going to be easy but I keep remembering what we did in Nairobi that evening and I know it can be done.”

The coach in Nairobi, Shuaibu Amodu, who is now the national technical director. Has also reminded Mikel of that day in Kenya.

“I also remember Nairobi, and I have already discussed it with Mikel (Obi) and he remembers very well and the spirit is there and he will pass it on to the other players,”Amodu said.

"We just have to remember that it has been done before and that we can do it again. Of course, that was a FIFA World Cup qualifier and this one is an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. But the same principle can be applied and Nigeria will come out victorious.”

forgiveness:
If merit is considered in selection, this guy no suppose even play for U20 but how he made it to the National team and benched Echijiele is beyond me. How can you bring a player who had only seen 169 minutes of game time in his first season in Europe and from a second division league over a player playing regularly in one of the top 5 leagues in Europe? Abi na yam to play for Monaco? The next in line is Oshaniwa and Madu before we even think of..em wetin be em name again Amuzie. Sentiment is at play here and i no close eye.

I don talk am before... We don't need the service of local coaches again. I have seen that they have got nothing to offer than to sell market.

We need a good foreign coach to bring in sanity and merit into the team.
Amuzie had a good game Sir, I understand your point though. But its there for every one to see, that his game spoke for him. The guy was not intimidated by Salah. He kept an eye over him. If you want to use experience and club as the basis for your arguments, I will have less to say, but if you allow his game especially the one against Egypt to speak for him, then they would be no need to bring this issue up. The played well.

Can Chelsea loanee Victor Moses knock out Egypt?

Victor Moses heads for goal against Egypt in Kaduna in the 84th minute after he has beaten the goalkeeper before his effort is cleared off the goalline

by Samm Audu

In the bible, Moses liberated oppressed Israelites from Egypt and tonight his namesake Victor Moses could do likewise for Nigeria’s Super Eagles in tonight’s AFCON 2017 decider in Alexandria.

The present-day Moses was a shock omission to the Eagles start list on Friday in Kaduna as coach Samson Siasia preferred Gent winger Moses Simon, who went to justify the confidence of the coach with a terrific display.

Chelsea loanee Moses could even have made the difference in Kaduna had he put away a glorious chance in the 84th minute, when he rounded up goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawi but his shot was cleared on the goalline by Hamada Tolba.

“It was almost a goal,” rued Siasia.

Moses himself promised he will be a lot more ruthless in front of goal in Egypt.

“Unfortunately we did not win at home. I did not see the (Nigeria) player who was behind me, but next time, I will make better use of my opportunity,” he vowed.

“We will make Nigeria proud.”

Besides the missed chance, he was lively for the short time he was on the pitch and he carved open the static Egypt defence with his dribble runs and vision.

It was like the Victor Moses at AFCON 2013, when he and Brown Ideye combined to crown Emmanuel Emenike goal king of the tournament.

Suggestions are now that he starts ahead of Ahmed Musa with Friday’s man of the match Oghenekaro Etebo playing a more offensive role to allow Lazio ace Ogenyi Onazi, fresh from a three-match suspension, partner Mikel Obi in defensive midfield.

Such a combination could thus provide the quality service which Odion Ighalo needs for him to deliver in Alexandria.

Kick-off time is 6pm Nigerian time at the Borg El-Arab Stadium.

Siasia, Mikel Promise Victory As Eagles Land In Alexandria

Nigeria’s delegation to Tuesday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt has arrived in Alexandria, venue of the match.

The delegation flew aboard an ARIK Air aircraft and landed at the Borg El-Arab Airport, Alexandria at 6.35pm Egypt time on Monday (5.35pm Nigeria time).

The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr. Chinyeaka Christian Ohaa, and NFF President Amaju Pinnick led the delegation that included 25 players and technical/backroom staff.

On arrival, Samson Siasia told thenff.com: “We know we have no choice but to win, so we will go all out. There is no alternative. All the players are aware of that fact and whoever gets to play tomorrow will fight very hard for the country.”

Captain Mikel Obi, who alongside Elderson Echiejile are the only surviving members from the 2009 squad that defeated Kenya in Nairobi in a must-win game to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, said: “We are in the same situation now as we were then going to Nairobi. I just have it in my mind that it can be done, that we have done it before.

“Yes, we will go out there on Tuesday night and do exactly what we have to do: fight. It is not going to be easy but I keep remembering what we did in Nairobi that evening and I know it can be done.”

The man who was head coach that evening in Nairobi, Shuaibu Amodu, is now the National Technical Director. He also spoke with thenff.com on arrival in Alexandria.

“I also remember Nairobi, and I have already discussed it with Mikel and he remembers very well and the spirit is there and he will pass it on to the other players.

“We just have to remember that it has been done before and that we can do it again. Of course, that was a FIFA World Cup qualifier and this one is an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. But the same principle can be applied and Nigeria will come out victorious.”

Following Chad’s withdrawal from the race, which has left only three teams in the Group G of the campaign and which nullified all results obtained against the Les Sao, only the group winner will qualify for 2017 Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Gabon.
Egypt currently top Group G with four points, with Nigeria second on two points and Tanzania on one point.

Echiejile: Super Eagles Must Be Brave Vs Egypt

By Johnny Edward:
AS Monaco defender Elderson Echiejile has urged his teammates to show bravery when they take on Egypt in Alexandra in Tuesday’s reverse 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The 28-year-old defender, who could be deployed in central ‎defence to partner Godfrey Oboabona, told Comple tesportsnigeria.com the game is win or bust for the Eagles.

“We have to give ourselves a chance of making it to the Nations Cup in Gabon by winning at all costs in Egypt,” Echiejile told Comple tesportsnigeria.com before the team’s departure to Alexandra on Monday.

The Eagles are two points adrift Egypt and must beat their hosts who have four points from two games‎ to brighten their chances of making it to Gabon.

“We must challenge them in all duels and take our chances when they come because that’s the only way to get victory,” Echiejile added.

“The team cannot afford to miss another AFCON.”
On arrival in Alexandra, the Super Eagles will have a light walkout before having a feel of the turf for ‎Tuesday’s cracker.

Amuzie: Eagles Unlucky In Kaduna, Will Beat Egypt In Alexandria

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/images-77.jpg
By Johnny Edward:
Olhanese of Portugal defender Stanley Amuzie is confident the Super Eagles can still qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations despite their 1-1 draw against Egypt in Kaduna last Friday.

The Eagles now have two points and Egypt four following Chad's withdrawal from the qualifying rounds and Samson Siasia's men must now beat the Pharoahs and Tanzania to seal a place in next year's African Nations Cup.

And Amuzie who is likely to keep his place in the team when they take on the group leaders in Tuesday's's crucial reverse fixture told Comple tesportsnigeria.com that all hopes are still not lost.

"We know what we need to do which is to win our remaining two games to qualify for the Nations Cup," Amuzie said.

"We were just unlucky not to have won but we will make amends."
Amuzie who made his debut in the encounter also shared his experience marking Mohammed Salah.

"What hurt me most is that didn't win not because Salah scored," he added. "Prior to the game there was much talk about him but he was relatively quiet until that moment he scored.

"We have to take our chances and I believe we won't disappoint."

The Super Eagles are expected to depart later Monday for Alexandra, Egypt for the reverse fixture of this tie.

Adepoju Backs Super Eagles To Beat Egypt

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/FullSizeRender-5.jpg
By James Agberebi:
Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju is confident that the Super Eagles can get a win against Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday.

The Eagles need an outright win against the Pharaohs to stand a chance of qualifying for next year's Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.

In the reverse leg which was played on Friday in Kaduna, a late Mohamed Salah goal earned Egypt a 1-1 draw.

Adepoju told Comple tesportsnigeria.com that the unpredictability of football could favour the Eagles.

"It is a very tight and difficult situation in which the Eagles find themselves. But I believe we can still scale through because in football anything can happen.

"I just hope the players have the belief to go there and play well," Adepoju told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

The former Real Sociedad player, however, warned that the Eagles must maintain a high level of focus.

He also urged them to try and convert goal scoring opportunities that come their way.

Adepoju added: "Their concentration level has to be high because that one of their undoing on Friday.

"They should try everything possible to make sure every opportunity that they get are converted.

"In the first leg, they had chances which would have sealed the win unfortunately they could only score one. So in Tuesday's game, I expect them to try as much as possible to convert the chances that they get."

Alloy: Super Eagles Will Cope Without Ikeme

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/image-100.jpeg
By Adeboye Amosu:
Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Alloy Agu, insists the side will cope with the absence of first choice goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, in Tuesday'scrucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt, reports Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers goalie is ruled out of the game billed for the Borg El- Arab Stadium in Alexandria due to ill- health.

Agu, a member of the Super Eagles squad that won the AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994, informed Comple tesportsnigeria.com that the duo of South Africa-based shot-stopper Daniel AKpeyi and Sunshine Stars' Ikechukwu Ezenwa are good enough to take the place of Ikeme in the game.

"We are disappointed that Ikeme will not be part of the game in Alexandria," Agu told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

"He is a top class goalkeeper and a very reliable one too.
"But in Daniel and Ezenwa we have two quality goalkeepers who are good enough to step in against Egypt.

"We believe in them and there is no need to panic."

Amuneke: Eagles Can’t Afford Silly Mistakes In Alexandria

https://d1bez7r3o7wd77.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/Amuneke.jpg
By James Agberebi:
Emmanuel Amuneke has predicted a tough encounter between the Super Eagles and Egypt in Tuesday 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Alexandria.

The Eagles were forced to a 1-1 draw by the Egyptians in Kaduna on Friday.
And they must secure the three points on Tuesday to stand a realisitc chance of qualifying for the 2017 AFCON.

Speaking with cafonline.com, Amuneke called on the Eagles players to avoid committing silly mistakes whuch cost them in the first leg.

"From experience, Egyptians are very passionate about football and I'm not surprised the game will be played in Alexandria in order to guarantee maximum support,” Amuneke, who played club football in Egypt for Zamalek, said.

“The game on Tuesday would be different from last Friday’s (in Kaduna) where we unfortunately conceded a late goal. It's going to be tougher.

“We would have to apply a lot of wisdom and cannot afford some of the mistakes we made in Kaduna. I wouldn't subscribe to the notion that we were tactically naive against Egypt in Kaduna because that was a match we would have won with some luck.

“In football, you don't talk about what should have been but we are going to Alexandria with optimism and we would use our strength positively.”

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has informed that the Super Eagles would not be lacking fans' support in Alexandria on Tuesday with arrangements in place to ferry the team, government officials as well as fans for the decisive encounter.

Ikeme “Gutted” To Miss Egypt Vs Nigeria Clash

By Adeboye Amosu
Super Eagles goalkeeper, Carl Ikeme, is disappointed he will not be part of Tuesday's crucial 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie against Egypt, Comple tesportsnigeria.com can report.

The Wolves goalkeeper has been ruled out of the game billed for the Borg El- Arab Stadium, Alexandria due to ill-health.

Ikeme took to Twitter to express his disappointment on missing out of the crucial game.

"Thanks for the messages and gutted to miss the Egypt game. I was unwell early Friday morning and have been unable to eat since Thursday night," he wrote on his Twitter handle.

"Thanks to the doctor and the coaches for their care over the last few days. I will be going home to recover and support the team on Tuesday."

Chippa United's goalie, Daniel Akpeyi, is expected to take his place in the starting eleven against the North Africans.

Samson Siasia's men were held to a 1-1 draw by the Pharaohs in the first leg at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna on Friday.

They need a win to boost their chances of making it to Gabon 2017.

1/7: Super Eagles Have Struggled Vs North Africans Away

The Super Eagles missed the chance to go top of group G after drawing 1-1 against Egypt, in the qualifiers for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

To avoid missing out on a place in Gabon next year, the Eagles must get a positive result in the reverse fixture against Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday.

Ahead of the crucial tie, Comple tesportsnigeria.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI takes a look at how the Eagles have fared in their last seven away clashes against North African opponents in qualifying matches…

TUNISIA 0-0 NIGERIA (2009, W/CUP QUALIFIER)
Just like in the present scenario with Egypt, the Super Eagles were trailing Tunisia by two points prior to their double header in the race to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Tunisia had six points from two games, while the Eagles had four points from the same number of games played. Also in their group were Mozambique and Kenya.

When both teams met in Tunis, in the first leg of their double header, the Eagles forced Tunisia to a 0-0 draw.

Despite playing 2-2 in the reverse fixture in Abuja, the Eagles still went on to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

ALGERIA 2-5 NIGERIA (2005, W/CUP QUALIFIER)
After playing a 1-1 draw against Angola in Kano, the Eagles needed to beat Algeria away in the fifth round of games of the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers to remain in the race.

Goals from Obafemi Martins (brace), Yusuf Ayila, Christian Obodo and John Utaka, gave the Eagles an emphatic 5-2 win against Algeria.

Unfortunately, Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup after being knocked out on head-to-head by Angola.

ALGERIA 1-1 NIGERIA (1993, W/CUP QUALIFIER)
The Eagles needed to avoid defeat against Algeria away, in a make or mar clash to qualify for their first ever World Cup.

They eventually secured the ticket, edging out Cote d’Ivoire, after playing 1-1 against Algeria in their last group game.

Finidi George gave the Eagles a first half lead before the Algerians leveled up to end the game all square.

ALGERIA 1-0 NIGERIA (1st Leg 1988, OLYMPIC QUALIFIER)
In the final round of the 1988 Seoul Olympic qualifiers, the Eagles were paired against Algeria in a two-legged tie.

The first leg of the encounter was played in Annaba with Algeria triumphing by 1-0.

The Eagles eventually secured qualification for the Olympic Games after winning the return leg 2-0.

TUNISIA 2-0 NIGERIA (2nd leg 1985, W/CUP QUALIFIER)
Tunisia were drawn to face Nigeria in the third round of the Mexico 1986 World Cup qualifier.

In the first leg played at the National Stadium, Lagos, the Eagles could only manage a 1-0 win.

But in the second leg, the Tunisians were able to overturn the deficit and won 2-0, to progress into the final round of the qualifiers.

MOROCCO 0-0 NIGERIA (2nd leg 1983, AFCON QUALIFIER)
After playing goalless at home in the first leg of the qualifiers for the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, the Eagles faced a herculean task in the return leg in Morocco.

But just like the first leg, the reverse fixture ended 0-0 and went into penalty shootout.

And at the end of the shootout, the Eagles eventually won 4-3 to qualify for the 1984 AFCON.

ALGERIA 2-1 NIGERIA (2nd Leg 1981, W/CUP QUALIFIER)
Algeria qualified for their first ever World Cup in 1982 at the expense of Nigeria, after both teams were drawn against each other in the final round of the qualifiers.

The first leg inside the National Stadium, Lagos ended 2-0 in favour of Algeria.
And in the second leg, Algeria finally picked the ticket after defeating the Eagles 2-1.

NFF, police trade blames over Kaduna overcrowding

Nigeria fans jam the TV platform at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium on Friday

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the country’s police have traded blames over the overcrowding at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna during an AFCON clash against Egypt, which could now earn the wrath of CAF.

More than 40,000 spectators crammed into the 25,000-capacityAhmadu Bello Stadium with some of them perched on television platforms, the scoreboard and on the athletics track of the arena.

Nigerian police chief Solomon Arase said the NFF ought to have placed a restriction on the fans in the form of a gate fee rather than throw the gates open.

However, NFF general secretary Mohamed Sanusi said crowd control was for host Kaduna State Government and the police.

“We did everything, we played our role but we have no control over the crowd. NFF is not a security agency; we can’t go and mount the gate,” he defended.

“We are not responsible for security in Kaduna State. It is the responsibility of the state government and the corresponding security operatives.”

Siasia still bullish of Nigeria's chances against Egypt

Nigeria skipper Mikel Obi

Nigeria coach Samson Siasia has said he still believes his team can win in Egypt on Tuesday night to get their AFCON 2017 campaign back on track after they were forced to a 1-1 draw at home in the first game.

Nigeria have their backs against the wall even more after Chad pulled out of the AFCON qualifiers citing financial constraints as only one team could only qualify for Gabon 2017 from this three-team group with Egypt in pole position two points clear at the top of the standings

“We can still make the difference in Egypt,” said a confident Samson Siasia, who has been appointed in temporary charge of the Super Eagles last month after the shock resignation of Sunday Oliseh.
“We have to encourage the boys so that they could play for Nigeria.”

Turkey-based forward Umar Aminu made his full international debut for the Eagles as a second half substitute and he said Egypt were lucky to get a draw in Kaduna.

“We’re going to Egypt to win. They were lucky to get an equaliser (in the first match), but we have learnt from this experience,” he said.

The Eagles departed Abuja Monday morning for Alexandria on a chartered flight.
