Rights activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has lambasted the Central Bank of Nigeria for allegedly flouting the interim injunction of the Supreme Court suspending the implementation of the February 10 deadline on the use of the old banknotes.
The PUNCH reports that the CBN had moved the deadline earlier set for the expiration of the legal tender status of the old notes from January 31 to February 10 after the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, met with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).
Nigerians have been groaning under the pain caused by the deadline as they are unable to get the new notes, while the old notes are being sold to them by Point of Sales vendors.
The Supreme Court, however, granted an interim injunction on February 8 restraining the CBN and the Federal Government from implementing the February 10 deadline.
But Falana, during a live appearance on Channels TV’s The 2023 Verdict on Tuesday, said the government was not ready to comply with the order, a report by Channels TV says.
“In a country where the rule of law operates, once the Supreme Court has determined a matter or given an order, it is expected that all and sundry – everybody – will comply with the order,” Falana said.
He added that a statement credited to the CBN that it would not comply with the order of the apex court because it was not a party to the case could only be tenable in a “banana republic”.
“A statement was credited to the central bank that since it was not a party to the case, it’s not going to comply with the order. I thought that could only happen in a banana republic.
“I expected the central bank to have issued a statement following the order of the Supreme Court: ‘all actions are stale until the 15th of February’,” he said.
The SAN added that an example should be made of those flouting court orders, stressing that nobody should feel that they were above the law.
“For me, an example has to be made this time around, so that nobody will feel that he’s above the law in our country,” he added.
Meanwhile, The PUNCH reports that the CBN has insisted on the February 10 deadline for the expiration of the legal tender status of the old N200, N500 and N1,000 notes.

I am so blessed to have known Ekpemi. I always came away from spending time with her moved by the joy she radiated and her unwavering trust in Jesus. She was honest about the hard things and so full of courage. She spoke with so much wisdom and kindness, you could tell Ekpemi knew her Lord well because she was so like Him, and oh what an encouragement it was to spend time with her!
I have scribbled in a notebook I must have written after spending time with Ekpemi once, it just says, "Do not be afraid"-Ekpemi. Her example of trusting God no matter what has had a profound impact on me and I am sure many others, and I thank God for making her precious life.
Ekpemi was the Proverbs 31 woman - so full of strength and dignity and laughing without fear of the future. From Charlotte
Continue resting in the bosom of the Lord, Ekpemi. You will be greatly missed. From Ezenwa Ekpe
You will be greatly missed darling Ekpemi. Sleep well in the arms of your creator.
I pray the Holy Spirit comforts the Anni and Alatishe families. From Mobola Akinloye
Ekpemi, you are a wonderful daughter of the King. I only got to know you over the last 18 months through Bible study but it has been a pleasure. I always hung on your every word when you spoke about the scriptures. You are such a spiritual woman with such insight and love for God and others. I’ll miss getting to know you more this side of heaven From Tim Eke
Ekpemi was my classmate in Junior secondary school and I was drawn to her because she was such a good artist , she would do drawings for fellow students that were writing story books, she will do designs for people and they were so good . I still tell my kids about my school mate that knew how to draw so well 🙂. We happened to go to the same university and although we were not in the same dept.. Ekpemi still had that peace and calm about her that I loved . After university, I still saw and read so many of her great works and she always remained that talented Artist I had as my classmate.
It was really hard for me to hear of her passing and I pray God comforts all her loved ones . ❤❤❤❤

That Ekpemi’s life was chosen to be short is a very bitter pill to swallow but that it touched me and mine is everything to be thankful for.
I am so so grateful to have crossed paths with such a kind, forthright, thoughtful, weird and wonderful person.
Only God can give the strength for such a loss and I pray that the privilege of being able to experience joyful times with his daughter earthside will overcome the deep pain of her passing.
As she once told me, Tough times don’t last, loved people do. Thank you for your love, your wonder and your beautiful friendship Ekpemi

I finally have the courage to write.
This is hard and sad news for us on this side of eternity.
We became friends when we both needed friendship and you truly have a special place in my heart. I have re lived the memories in my heart and with friends, my sisters and all. You are one special person. You were young and you went through life like a person on a mission not being overwhelmed but just saying yes to the next thing before you. I am glad i got to go on some of the adventures your mind would conjure up. I am not in the least bit worried about you because i know you have rested from the troubles of this life. I wish we had more time with you my friend on this side of eternity. Rest well my friend till we meet again From Talatu
It's so sad to hear this, she was one of the few female chess player I knew back in school. She was very easy going and very reserved. May the good Lord grant her eternal rest.
ASSOCIATION OF SENIOR STAFF OF BANKS, INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS (ASSBIFI)
*WE ARE NOT SABOTEURS*
Our attention has been drawn to the recent attacks on some of our institutions leading to the destruction of equipment, and damage to buildings while endangering the lives of our members and other staff of banks.
We strongly condemn this act which is borne out of the propaganda against banks as the sole cause of the inability of the public to have access to cash across the country.
We have seen a few videos of bank branches allegedly hoarding cash in their vaults. While we do not hold brief for these isolated cases or condone any verified bad behavior, we expect that the same sources of these videos to also project the many locations that have continued to provide cash to customers to have empty vaults due to the unavailability of cash.
Unfortunately, we do not deem it security conscious for us to share videos or pictures of our vaults with the public as professionals. We are concerned about the safety of our members who, in the past few weeks have worked tirelessly EVERYDAY for long hours against the prescribed work hours just to ensure customers are able to deposit their old currency notes and make the new ones available for withdrawals at ATMs. This exercise has taken its toll on their health, work life balance, and families while being faced daily with the fear of physical assaults by irate customers.
While we assure the public of our commitment to ensure their pain is ameliorated, we appeal for calm and understanding at this time as we call on the security agencies to ensure the safety and security of our lives and bank property.
WE ARE NOT SABOTEURS* but are professionals who follow and implement policies of regulators and will never be engaged in any act that will bring our institutions or persons to disrepute.
Yesterday, I went to First Bank to use the ATM, I got there and looked around and joined the long queue. A young lady came to meet me and asked how much I wanted to withdraw.
She said she over withdrew money; She was supposed to withdraw ₦3,000 but mistakenly pressed ₦30,000. She will give me ₦20,000 cash, I will transfer it to her account.
This is what shocked me; I have been standing on the queue for approximately five minutes and I never saw this Lady around that ATM, she wasn't on the queue, she never made any withdrawal.
Which ATM did she use in getting the ₦30,000?
I told her I will wait for my turn, she left my side, I asked the man in my front, did you see this lady around? I wanted to point her but the Lady had disappeared, I didn't see her again.
I told the man what she said and he laughed and said it is an old logic. They come with fake Naira notes claiming they mistakenly pressed and withdraw the wrong amount.
When you are in a hurry to leave the long queue, you transfer the money to them and they give you cash.
You leave happily thinking you have escaped long queue, go to wherever to buy something with the money and realise you were given fake money
The man called it Old logic but what saved me was my keen observation, she looked so innocent and pretty, you won't even suspect a thing.
I am sure someone out there is hearing about this stealing logic for the first time.
I had to post this because I am hearing it for the first time too o. It might help someone who doesn't know this too.
The mother of Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, is dead.
She died on Tuesday.
Funke’s older sister, Olubunmi Akindele, announced their mother’s death in a statement on Tuesday.
The statement read, “It is with heavy hearts, but in total submission to God Almighty, that the ADEBANJO and AKINDELE families announce the passing of their daughter, mother, grandmother and sister, DR. R B ADEBANJO-Akindele, which occurred on Tuesday 07 February 2023.
“May her gentle soul begin its rest eternal in peace. Amen. Obsequies in honour of her passing shall be announced in due course.”
The PUNCH reports that the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has sympathised with the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Akindele, over the death of her mother.
Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Gboyega Akosile, on Tuesday, said it is difficult to find the right words to condole someone who lost a beloved person, noting that losing mothers is one of the deepest sorrows for man.
The governor prayed for peace, comfort, courage and love for Funke, his immediate siblings, and the Adebanjo and Akindele families as they mourn the deceased.
He said, “My heart goes out to Funke, friends of the Adebanjo and Akindele families on the demise of their daughter, mother and grandmother, Dr RB Adebanjo-Akindele who answered the ultimate call today, Tuesday, February 7, 2023.
“Death of loved ones, whenever it happens, is usually a very painful episode but we must be consoled by the good life lived by the deceased person. We should relish in the beautiful memories the dead left behind for us.
The governor urged the PDP deputy governorship candidate to be comforted by the good life that her late mother lived and continue to pray for the repose of the deceased.
“On behalf of my family and the good people of Lagos State, I hereby express my heartfelt condolences to the entire families and friends of Adebanjo and Akindele.
“May God grant the soul of the departed eternal rest and the families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss,” he added.
Angry residents of Abeokuta, Ogun State, were seen on the streets protesting the unending cash and fuel scarcity in the country.
In some of the videos shared on social media, an angry mob advances towards a First Bank branch in the state capital. The mob, attempting to destroy the bank, hurls stones and sticks at it.
In a video, the protester behind the camera says he loves the spike of violence as the situation has become unbearable.
“Yes, this is how it should be. The suffering is too much. I support that. Everywhere,” the masculine voice says repeatedly.
A source who spoke with FIJ said the violence was sparked by the refusal of a Guaranty Trust Bank in the Asero area of the state capital to allow residents access cash after a ‘bullion van’ was seen entering its compound.
“Earlier, around noon, people traced a ‘bullion van’ to the GTBank in Asero,” he told FIJ.
“When people got to the bank, officials told them there was no money, which made them angry.
“They got hold of the bank manager and unleashed their anger on him.”
The source said although security operatives immediately stepped in to contain the violence, their presence didn’t stop it from spreading to other parts of the state capital.
“Even though military personnel and security operatives were immediately deployed, the mob took their protest to an Access Bank branch in Car Wash before proceeding to Sapon,” the source said.
“In Sapon, they set fire to a First Bank branch.”
He noted that the protests in Abeokuta, though sparked by the unavailability of naira notes and petrol, was compounded by a prolonged power outage in the town.
On Friday, FIJ reported that residents of Ibadan, Oyo State, protested the scarcity of naira notes in the country.
More enraged Nigerians have expressed disgust and anger on the hardship they are being exposed to due to the recent redesigned of Naira notes and failed swap process.
Notably out of many is the venom angrily poured on the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, via a video footage which has gone viral on social media by the Iyaloja General of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Chief Toyin Badmus.
In the over two minutes video recording titled in Yoruba: “Emefiele, Okan oni Bale,” (Emefiele, you won’t have rest of mind) the enraged woman started by calling the CBN Governor’s name thrice, a sign to depict frustration, anguish and a person under oppression, and reigned curses on him, saying repeatedly: “Emefiele, okan oni bale.”
Badmus recalled that the same money (old Naira notes) the CBN Governor mandated Nigerians to go and deposit at the Banks are now given to Nigerians by Point of Service operators with a charge of N2,000 on N20,000.
The Eagle Online is reporting that some PoS operators now charge as much as N5,000 in exchange for N20,000 because of the scarcity of Naira notes.
According to Badmus, when she sent her daughter to go and collect money from a PoS operator, she was made to pay an extra N2000 on N20,000, while she was told that she would pay an extra charge if she wanted new notes.
She asked rhetorically: “How many Nigerians can afford to pay N2,000 as an extra charge on top of N20,000?”
She accused Emefiele of using the new policy for politics, lamenting that playing politics with the lives of teeming Nigerians was heartless.
Following this, she cursed the CBN Governor that he won’t benefit from the wealth he might have accumulated.

‘CBN Should Expedite Actions that Ensures the Availability of New Currency”
Presidential Candidate, Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi urging the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and Commercial Banks to take proactive measures that would alleviate current hardship across the country.
Tiwa Savage Listen (born 5 February 1980) is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and performing artist. Born in Isale Eko, she relocated to London at the age of 11 for her secondary education. Five years later, she began her music career doing backup vocals for artists such as George Michael and Mary J. Blige. After participating in the UK edition of The X Factor and graduating from Berklee College of Music, Savage signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Music Publishing in 2009. Inspired by the growth of the Nigerian music industry, Savage moved back to Nigeria and signed with Mavin Records in 2012. She made an appearance on the label's 2012 compilation album Solar Plexus.
Her debut studio album Once Upon a Time was released on the 3rd of July 2013. It was supported by seven singles: "Kele Kele Love", "Love Me (3x)", "Without My Heart", "Ife Wa Gbona", "Folarin", "Olorun Mi" and "Eminado". The album was nominated for Best Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards and for Best R&B/Pop Album at The Headies 2014. Savage's second studio album R.E.D was released on 19 December 2015. It yielded two singles: "My Darlin" and "Standing Ovation". R.E.D and Sugarcane have both been nominated for Best Album at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

She has been involved in youth empowerment and breast cancer screening projects and has raised funds to build schools in Nigeria.
Personal life
Savage was married to Tunji "Tee Billz" Balogun. On 23 November 2013, the couple held their traditional marriage at the Ark in Lekki. The couple's white wedding was held on 26 April 2014 at the Armani Hotel in Dubai. On 1 January 2015, Savage and Balogun announced that they were expecting their first child together. Six months later, Savage gave birth to their son. On 28 April 2016, Balogun accused his wife of infidelity and his mother-in-law of witchcraft. In a 45-minute interview conducted by This Day newspaper and Pulse Nigeria, Savage extensively addressed her husband's lengthy social media posts regarding their marriage. She debunked her husband's infidelity claims and accused him of financial recklessness, drug addiction and abandonment. She said her marriage to him was over.
On 19 July 2021, Savage lost her father to an undisclosed illness.
The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi has called on authorities in the country to do whatever necessary to ease the pains of Nigerians over fuel shortages and the new naira notes scarcity.
In a statement issued on Thursday and made available to journalists, Obi said that he had been travelling around the country on the campaign trail, meeting and engaging Nigerians of diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds, that the unified experiences they recounted was one of untold suffering.
“Yesterday, Datti Baba-Ahmed and I with our team were in Sokoto and Jigawa States, and today (Thursday) we were in Zamfara and Kebbi States. As I have travelled across Nigeria, engaging with as many citizens as possible, the feedback is that Nigerians are suffering terribly.
“Top on the mentions are the biting fuel shortages and the scarcity of the new naira notes. Nigerians, especially women and the youth, are impacted negatively by the lingering shortage of both essentials to regular daily living in our country.
“These shortages are dehumanising Nigerians, even more than they have already been, by a series of ineffectual governments who failed to serve the interest of the people.
“I am worried about the impact these shortages are having on the lives of Nigerians and small businesses, which are a significant force in our economy,” Obi said.
He, therefore, called on the authorities and bodies in charge to take practical intervention steps to create systems that would serve the people and resolve the crises.
He added that Nigerians had already suffered enough, and the twin crises of fuel shortages and the unavailability of the new naira notes could have been avoided if leaders were competent and compassionate.
“It’s time that the authorities, relevant agencies and organisations realise that they exist for the people and not the other way round.
“I am calling on the governments at all levels to intervene in these crises and ensure that the interest and well-being of Nigerians are placed on the front burner, ahead of any other interest group.
“Nigerians don’t deserve this kind of experience," Obi concluded.
The senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on public affairs, Ajuri Ngelale, has faulted the implementation of the naira redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) led by Godwin Emefiele.
He also alleged that the apex bank led by its governor, Godwin Emefiele had failed to feed the president with the realities on the ground.
Speaking in an interview on TVC News, Ngelale said Nigeria is witnessing a period of displeasure in line with the faulty circulation of the new naira notes across the country. He said:
"At this point, it is obvious to everybody that the implementation of the naira redesign policy has been faulty, to say the least.
"We are witnessing massive amounts of discontent, we are seeing situations where our people are left camping outside overnight in ATMs hoping for the injection of new cash into those ATMs. We are seeing people on the streets boxing each other out trying to walk themselves through the doors of banking halls hoping to access the new naira notes."
While stating that the intention behind the redesign of the naira notes has been good, Ngelale said its implementation has been a colossal failure.
He said that the naira redesign policy is a good one and well accepted according to Nigeria's plan for a digital economy but the process has not been duly implemented in line with the laid out plan.
He added: "What we are working to do is to ensure that Mr. President is given effective and true information and the report that has been given by the Central Bank of Nigeria that they have adequately supplied all banking branches in Nigeria with a sufficient amount of the new naira notes is absolutely false.
It is evident at this point and of course, Mr. President being the pro-people defender of the masses... did the right thing when the intelligence reached him that he was getting false intelligence from the Central Bank and was to extend the deadline from January 31 to February 10."
Nigerians have been urged to remain calm and patient with the transition of the phase of the new naira notes. The plea was made by the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, following the challenges faced by Nigerians in accessing the naira notes.
Godwin Emefiele said hiccups are always expected in situations like this but will surely be overcome.
The Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has accused the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) of printing only N300 billion new redesigned naira notes after mopping up over N2 trillion of the old naira notes.
He said that APC governors under the aegis of the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) have asked President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the CBN to allow the old and new naira notes to co-exist to ease the tough time Nigerians are going through.
The Governor stated this while speaking to journalists shortly after a meeting between President Buhari and the APC governors at the State House Abuja.
New notes not enough: Governor El-Rufai, who was also in company of the Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, said the new notes in circulation are insufficient for Nigerians.
The former FCT minister explained that if the CBN had wanted to implement the cashless policy, it should have printed at least half of the amount that was mopped up for a start, which should be N1 trillion.
Nigerians going through it: Governor El Rufai lamented that many Nigerians are suffering, even as traders of perishable goods are losing their wares daily from low patronage.
Citing tomatoes as an example, El-Rufai said some sellers from the North who travelled to Lagos with their goods experienced wastage because buyers lacked the cash to purchase them.
Therefore, the governors appealed to the President to consider their request. Asked about Buhari’s response, he said the President did not reply with a “yes” or “no.” El-Rufai disclosed that the Chairman of Progressive Governors Forum, Abubakar Bagudu, is meeting the President behind closed doors hoping to get a definite response.
Argentina Plans Larger-Denomination Bill as Inflation Nears 100%
*Central bank announces it will print 2,000 peso note *Decision comes as cash becomes burdensome in Argentina
Argentina’s central bank will print bank notes of larger denomination after months of complaints by residents and tourists who, faced with inflation of near 100% a year, have to carry increasingly bigger piles of cash to pay for everyday purchases.
The monetary authority announced Thursday it authorized the national mint to design a 2,000 peso bank note, double the value of the country’s largest denomination bill today, but still worth about $6 only, according to Argentina’s commonly used informal exchange rates.
Central bank officials were reluctant to print higher-value bank notes for months, insisting that investment in digital payment platforms was a better use of resources. The decision to launch a 2,000 peso bill hints at that hesitancy: Local media had reported that denominations of as much as 10,000 pesos were being considered.
Scenes reminiscent of Venezuela or other high-inflation countries emerged in Argentina in recent months with tourists paying restaurant bills with stacks of cash and banks running out room to store bank notes destined for ATMs. A gap between Argentina’s official and parallel exchange rates encourages cash use, especially among tourists who arrive with dollar bills.
Digital payments have increased too, the central bank said in a statement. The number of bank transfers rose 99% in December from a year ago, while payments made with QR codes were up 41% over the same period.
Britain's egg crisis deepens as shoppers continue to face shortages and spiralling costs, as some packets double in price compared to last year
Britain's egg crisis is deepening as shoppers continue to face shortages and spiralling prices.
Some packs cost almost twice as much as they did a year ago, while in many shops they are simply not available, particularly in supermarkets in larger towns and cities.
Over the past month alone, a third of eggs on sale in the biggest nine supermarkets rose in price, according to The Grocer magazine.
That followed a round of price rises in November, when shortages in shops first became noticeable.
The biggest increase over the past month was a six-pack of free-range eggs at Asda, up 18 per cent to £1.95, according to the data supplied to The Grocer by analysts Assosia.
Egg suppliers said availability should improve this month, since demand tends to peak over the Christmas period.
But increases in supply to end shortages will take three months to allow suppliers to up production, said British Free Range Egg Producers Association boss Robert Gooch.
We are delighted that Starlink services have been deployed in Nigeria, making us the first African country — and the only one so far — to enjoy this rollout. With this deployment of Starlink, we now have 100 percent broadband penetration in Nigeria.

ICPC Arrests Woman Offering New Naira Notes for Sale
ICPC has today, 1st of February 2023, arrested a woman, Omoseyin Oluwadarasimi Esther, with the Twitter handle of Lala, offering new naira notes for sale on social media.
The arrest was as a result of intelligence received which led the ICPC operatives to seek out and promptly arrest the suspect.
It is believed she is in collusion with key elements in the financial services sector diverting the newly released notes away from banking halls and payment channels into a “ black market”
She is currently in ICPC detention and is helping the Commission with its findings on the criminal trading of the naira and the attendant scarcity and negative economic outcomes being caused by the action.
