Politics / Jos Attack: HURIWA Insists Fulani Herdsmen Are Terrorists by Nne5: 3:30pm On Oct 17, 2017
For umpteenth time, the pro-democracy and Non-Governmental Organization – HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA (HURIWA) has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to stop his rhetorics and take legal action to declare armed Fulani herdsmen as terrorists.

HURIWA said the taciturn and conspiratorial approach of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration towards adopting objective steps to declare armed Fulani herdsmen as terrorists which is suspected to be because he is Fulani by Ethnicity will obliterate whatever legacy he may bequeath to Nigeria after his tenure in 2019.

The Rights group also dismissed the verbal reaction of president Buhari to the continuous genocide in Plateau State masterminded by armed Fulani herdsmen, as hypocritical following his administration’s refusal to do the right thing by legally classifying armed Fulani herdsmen as terrorists and deploying military forces to decisively crush them.
The Rights group specifically condemned the pattern of systematic killings that have taken place in Bassa, Plateau State particularly the accusations by some survivors that soldiers in Plateau State relocated them to the primary school and abandoned them to be callously massacred by the rampaging herdsmen. HURIWA recalled that recently some affected farmers attacked in Benue state by armed Fulani herdsmen appeared before the Presidential probe panel on human rights violations by the military and blamed the armed soldiers for aiding and abetting armed Fulani herdsmen’s attacks.

“We condemn in very strong terms, the persistent denial of the reality of the armed Fulani terror campaign across the country by the current administration of president Buhari which has so far failed to take concrete, verifiable and legal based actions to put to an end the spectacles of blood cuddling terror attacks of armed Fulani herdsmen”.

Also, the Rights body condemned the United Nations Human Rights Council for rewarding the Buhari’s government with an undeserving membership of this body even when the current administration will go down in history as the most brutal civilian government which has so far grossly breached the human rights of Citizens.

“Why should the United Nations allow Nigeria to win a re-election into the discredited UN human rights council on the very day that armed Fulani herdsmen continued their murderous genocide of farmers in parts of Plateau, North Central Nigeria dominated by Christians?”

“The current National Assembly has also unfortunately failed to use its constitutional oversight powers to compel the armed security forces and the president to take action to classify armed Fulani herdsmen as terrorists. Is this because both President Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki are Fulanis by origin?”

Politics / President Buhari Leaves For Turkey On Wednesday by Nne5: 3:07pm On Oct 17, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari is to depart for Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, to participate in the ninth Summit of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation (D-8 ) slated for Oct. 20.

Buhari leaves for Turkey Wednesday
Members of D-8 are Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Mr. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, made this known to newsmen in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday.

According to the statement, prior to the D-8 Summit, President Buhari, at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey, will participate in an official working visit to Ankara, the capital city.

While in Ankara, Adesina said, the President would have a discussion with his Turkish counterpart while delegations from both countries would hold discussions in various fields including defence cooperation, security, educational and migration issues.
“The Nigerian leader will also visit the Grand National Assembly of the Republic of Turkey in Ankara where he will meet with the Speaker, Ismail Karamanlis,’’ the statement maintained.

Adesina revealed that President Buhari would use the occasion of the D-8 Summit to bolster warm and growing ties across a broad range of areas of cooperation with leaders of the D8-member countries.
The D8-member countries include Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan and Turkey.

The Summit with the theme, ‘‘Expanding Opportunities through Cooperation’’, will among other things, focus on cooperation in the areas of agriculture, trade, transport, energy and increased private sector participation among member-countries.
During the Summit, which will also mark the 20th anniversary of the organisation established to improve the developing countries’ positions in the world economy, the President would highlight the significant show of confidence in Nigeria’s business environment and economy.

The statement said President Buhari would also affirm Nigeria’s resolve to work with D-8 member-countries on many key areas, including peace and security, economy and trade.

At the end of the Summit, the Heads of State and Government will adopt a Communiqué, also known as the ‘Istanbul Declaration’.

It stated that President Buhari will be accompanied on the trip by ministers, top government officials, including the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Hameed Ali.

The objectives of D-8 are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at international level, and improve standards of living.

D-8 is a global arrangement rather than a regional one, as the composition of its members reflects.

Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8 ) is a forum with no adverse impact on bilateral and multilateral commitments of the member countries, emanating from their membership to other international or regional organisations.

Politics / Biafra: Court Orders Abaribe, Jewish Priest To Produce Kanu Or Face Jail by Nne5: 2:52pm On Oct 17, 2017
…adjourns case to Nov 20, as FG applies for warrant of arrest

…. Kanu’s co-defendants seek separate trial
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA – The Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, ordered Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a Jewish High Priest, Emmanu El-Shalom Oka BenMadu, and an accountant, Tochukwu Uchendu, to appear before it on November 20 to explain the whereabouts of the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu.

The three persons that signed IPOB leader bail bond, From the right, Tochukwu Uchendu, Jewish Chief High Priest, Immanuel-El Shalom Oka-Ben Madu and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.

The court maintained the trio who stood surety for the IPOB leader, must produce him for continuation of his trial, or face jail term/forfeiture of their bail bond.
The order which was made by trial Justice Binta Nyako, followed Kanu’s absence in court to take his plea to an amended five-count treasonable felony charge the Federal Government preferred against him and four other pro-Biafra agitators, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawuisi and Bright Chimezie.

Justice Nyako had in a ruling on April 25, released Kanu on bail after he had spent a year and seven months in detention, though the court okayed his co-defendants to remain in prison custody.

To secure Kanu’s release, Abaribe who is representing Abia South Senatorial District, El-Shalom and Uchendu, on April 28, signed an undertaking to always ensure the presence of the defendant in court for his trial.

However, at the resumed sitting on the matter on Tuesday, government lawyer, Mr. Shuaibu Labaran, drew attention of the court to Kanu’s absence, even as he applied for a bench warrant to be issued against him.

FG equally urged the court to summon Abaribe and the other sureties to show cause why they should not be committed to prison with their N100m bail bond forfeited.

In opposition to the application, Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, told the court that his client had been missing since September 14 when he said soldiers invaded the IPOB leader’s family compound at Afara-Ukwu village in Umuahia, Abia state.
“I cannot tell my lord whether he is dead or alive bevaise 28 people were killed at his house”, Ejiofor added.

He told the Judge that he has a pending suit that is asking the Nigerian Army to produce Kanu before the court either dead or alive.

“As it stands today, I don’t know where my client is. They are in a better position to tell us where he is”.

At that juncture, Justice Nyako asked if any of the three sureties were present in court.
In response, Abaribe’s lawyer, Ogechi Ogbonna, announced his appearance and informed the court that his client had not seen or heard from Kanu since September 11.
Ogbonna told the court that his client was no longer willing to continue as Kanu’s surety and had filed a motion to be discharged.

Neverthless, Justice Nyako said she would not entertain Abaribe’s application until he produced Kanu before the court.

“No! He remains a surety until he produces the defendant. It is only when the 1st defendant is here that he can withdraw and the bail of the defendant revoked”, the judge insisted.

The trial Judge said there were three option available to Abaribe in the matter.
She said: “I will give you three different scenarios available here for your client. He should produce the defendant and apply to withdraw.

“Or he could say I don’t know where the defendant is and I cannot produce him, take my bail bond.

“The third scenario is he can say give me time to produce him. These are the only options for your client”.

Abaribe’s lawyer accepted the third option, saying his client would try to acsertain the whereabouts of the IPOB leader.
In her ruling, Justice Nyako ordered the three sureties to appear before the court to show cause why bench warrant should not be issued against them.

“The second surety, Abaribe, will only be recused when the defendant is produced or if he choses to forfeit the bail bond”, Justice Nyako held.

Sequel to an application by Mr. Maxwell Okpara, counsel to the 4th defendant, Nwawuisi, Justice Nyako ordered prison authorities to grant the defendant access to his private medical doctor.
The case was subsequently adjourned till November 20.

Meantime, Kanu’s co-defendants had through their various lawyers, applied for separate and accelerated trial.
They expressed fears that unknown whereabouts of the 1st defendant would affect the expeditious determination of the charge against them.

Meantime, Abaribe had in his application that has FG as the 1st respondent, said he “lacks capacity to produce a person stated by the 1st Respondent to be a member of a terrorist organisation, or any persin whom the 1st respondent is reported to be interested in his whereabouts including the aftermat of the military operations in Abia state which commenced about 11th September, 2017”.

He specifically prayed the court for an order “discharging the applicant as surety of the 1st/2nd respondent, and discharging the recognizance entered into by the applicant, and to discharge the applicant from the entire incidence of the bail of Nnamdi Kanu- the 1st defendant/2nd respondent in charge No. FHC/Abj/CR/383/2015: Federal Republic of Nigeria v Nnamdi Kanu, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawisi.

As well as, “An order discharging the bond executed by the applicant for the bail of the 1st Defendant/2nd Respondent in charge No. FHC/Abj/CR/383/2015: Federal Republic of Nigeria v Nnamdi Kanu, Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu, David Nwawisi and refunding the sum of N100, 000, 000.00 (one hundred million naira only) or any other sum paid into this honourable court or undertaken to this honourable court sequel to the bail of the 2nd respondent”.

FG has already filed its own counter motion where it insisted that the federal lawmaker, having vouched for the IPOB leader, must produce him before the court for trial.

Meanwhile, two former Aviation Ministers, Chief Osita Chidoka and Femi Fani-Kayode were in court to show solidarity to the “missing” IPOB leader.

Speaking to newsmen after the proceeding, Chidoka who is a gubernatorial aspirant in Anambra state, urged the National Assembly to investigate what transpired during the Operation Python Dance II the Army conducted in the South East.

Chidoka said he did not believe there was any form of insurrection in the region to warrant deployment of soldiers by FG.

On his part, Fani-Kayode asked the Nigerian Army to produce Kanu who he said was only fighting for his constitutionally guaranteed right to self determination.

“It is very clear to us that something must have happened to him and I am deeply concerned. If he is indeed in custody of the Army, they should let us know. If he is dead, let them release his dead body.

“I call on the Nigerian military to stop this charade. If Kanu is with you, please release him.

“The allegation that 28 persons were killed by the military in Kanu’s compound is unacceptable and I say shame on those that may not know Kanu but hear about all these allegations and still stay on the fence. I say shame on them. We are men of courage and we are here today”, Fani-Kayode who wore Igbo chieftaincy attire with a matching red cap, added.

Kanu is facing four out of the five count amended charge that borders on treasonable felony, criminal conspiracy and alleged illegal importation of radio transmitters into Nigeria for the dissemination of hate messages.

FG, among other things, alleged that Kanu had “on or about the 28th April, 2015 in London, United Kingdom did in a broadcast on Radio Biafra monitored in Enugu, Enugu state and other parts of Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, referred to Major General Muhammadu Buhari, GCON, President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a paedophile, a terrorist, an idiot and an embodiment of evil, knowing same to be false and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 375 of the Criminal Code Act, Cap C. 38 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004″.

Politics / Buhari Fixing Wrong People In Strategic Positions – Dino Melaye by Nne5: 7:03am On Oct 11, 2017
Senator Dino Melaye has noted that there are so many square pegs in round holes in the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

Melaye said Buhari’s selections were synonymous to someone wearing oversized shoes, adding that there were lots of nepotism in the President’s appointments.
In an interview with Vanguard, Melaye, a chieftain of the ruling party, said, “Let me tell you, in this government, we have square pegs in round holes.

“You cannot give carpentry work to a tailor and you expect him to perform. We need to rejig the economy managers of this nation because you cannot give what you don’t have.

“Cabinet reshuffle has to do with the ministers. We have strategic positions in this country that is manned by wrong people; a coach is as good as members of his team.

“The President cannot be minister of petroleum, Minister of Internal Affairs but if he has good aides, the economy will move because these people will be working within their terrain.

“If a tailoring work is given to a carpenter, the output will be a beautiful nonsense.
“The president must rejig his appointments.
The president should forget about politics and bring out people with vigour, better hands that will get the job done. Such people should be involved in the process irrespective of the party they belong or their tribes.

“The SGF misbehaved because he has never worked in any public service in his life before becoming the SGF.

“The SGF of a country is the manager of the entire process of Governance. A man that is not imbibed and indoctrinated in the act of civil administration or the rudiments of public administration, definitely he will misbehave.

“His appointment is synonymous to someone wearing an oversized shoe and this is applicable to other appointments in this government, there are a lot of nepotism in appointment in this government.

“Like I told you earlier, it’s not all about party. Even the president is not an APC president but the president of the federal republic of Nigeria including the witches and wizards of this country. He is the president of everybody. Development process is national and no one should be partisan about it.

“If you find a good man in PDP or APGA that can do the job perfectly, appoint him or her in the interest of National development than to bring an APC man that has no idea of what to do.

“Today in this country there is an organization headed in this country by a lawyer, what do we expect from such appointment? We have ministers that have no cognate experience at all on where to serve.”

Politics / Why My Father Is Not Aware Of Poor State Of Aso Rock Clinic –zahra by Nne5: 4:01pm On Oct 10, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Zahra, has explained why her father may not be aware of the deteriorating state of the Aso Villa clinic.

Just yesterday, Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari ”flamed” up over the state of the hospital which according to her is shameful.

But before then, Zahra had on September 29th called out the permanent secretary of the state house over the poor condition of the hospital.

Zahra asked why the hospital lacked basic items such as a syringe even when it has a N3. 2 billion budgetary allocations.

After she called out the Permanent Secretary, Nigerians reacted in different ways; while some applauded her for speaking out, others asked her to go and seek answers from her father.

After her mother’s speech yesterday, Zahra took to her Instagram page to reply some of the question posted by Nigerians.

The President’s daughter wrote, “I was insulted a lot about the hospital thing and I have to tell you that I laughed at a lot of them and was really sad at a lot of them because it really made me understand that a lot of Nigerians are not as educated as I thought.

“Many people were saying that I should ask my father, I should tell him. The thing is that many people are appointed at different stages and they make sure that whatever they are in charge of works out well and they monitor properly.

“So, the president can’t be at every point. He can’t be monitoring everyone’s post. It is impossible. It is literally impossible. So there are some things happening now to help with the state house hospital.”

Politics / You Have No Business Being Corrupt, Olanipekun Tells Judges, Magistrates by Nne5: 3:44pm On Oct 10, 2017
The anti - graft war of the President Muhammadu Buhari -led administration has continued to receive a groundswell of support with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria , Chief Wole Olanipekun , urging the bar and the bench to shun corruption and unethical practices.

Olanipekun spoke on Tuesday at the Bar and Bench Forum as part of activities marking the 2017/2018 Golden Jubilee Legal Year in Lagos State .

In a keynote address entitled , “ Promoting a Pace -setting and Productive Judiciary in Lagos State ” , Olanipekun admonished judges and magistrates to be sober , impartial and God -fearing in the discharge of their duties .
“ Your Lordships are not only expected to be impartial , but decent, courteous , fair, sober , reflective and God -fearing.

“ In my honest opinion and I want to believe that many Nigerians share this humble thought of mine , a judge has no business being corrupt or corrupted .

“ A judge should not be influenced or be compromised by other factors or nuances other than the law and facts of the case placed before him , ” he said .
Olanipekun noted that judges and judicial workers constituted the courts and therefore , should maintain high moral standards .

He said :“ Can the pacesetter status of the judiciary in Lagos State be enhanced if our judges have to work with miscreants , saboteurs, rogues , infidels , criminals , touts and delinquents as registrars , court clerks, bailiffs , sheriffs , personal assistants etc ?
“ A judge alone does not constitute the court , but a court is constituted by the judge , counsel , registrars of all cadres, bailiffs , secretaries etc .
“ A judge does not know whether any of his aides , registrars of any lawyer has been using his name, title and office to collect bribes purportedly meant for him from litigants .

“ Examples are legion , but the fact remains that no judge is a knight- errant and no judge or human possesses the attributes of God , who alone is omniscient and omnipresent .

“ Any of these staff of the judiciary who have been caught engaging in any unscrupulous activity aimed at tarnishing the image of the judiciary, or bringing it into opprobrium , should not be treated with kid gloves . ”

Olanipekun , however , decried what he identified insufficient judges overburdened with adjudicating thousands of cases in courtrooms in the state compared to their counterparts in the Federal High Courts .
