Distinguish ladies and gentle men. The magnificent President, the humble invitees and viewers, I greet you all.

All my time here in Nairaland, I've been gazing through the window striving to retrieve the key to the unlock door, but I failed severely.

Today is the day of merriment and fulfillment. A day that will stay glued to my heart forever.

I cried heartily when I see or hear people speaking ill about poetry. They see it as beans that takes time to be cooked, they see it as a building where no one lives. Some people even yelp at the poets saying awful things, they see poets as lazy people. But now, I'm a happy man because today is the day when rivers will flow, when failure will be broken, and proofs be seen.

Poetry is a  lot of things to a lot of people. Its the chiseled marble of language. There are equally numerous reasons for writing poetry. But poetry, unlike prose, often has an underlying and over -arching purpose that goes beyond the literal. Poetry is evocative. It typically evokes in the reader an intense emotion: joy, sorrow, anger, catharsis, love e.t.c.

Poetry can be powerfully moving, beautiful and even funny. Using a piece of poetry within your speech/writing can add quality and depth to your message.

I'm Noble4d, a patron to this innovative poetry club.

Thanks.

ayozainy:
tanks buh kindly explain iambic pentameter for me. I dont understand
Hy ayozainy...I honestly love your determination, God bless you.

If you want to write poetry or you want to be a more careful reader of it, knowing iambic pentameter, Trochee, Dactyl and vice versa will help.let's look at some terms before going deep:

METER

Meter refers to the pattern of syllables in a line of poetry. The most basic unit of measure in a poem is the syllable and the pattern of syllables in a line, from stressed to unstressed or vice versa.

FOOT

Syllables are paired two and three at a time depending on the stresses in the sentence. Two syllables together, or three if it’s a three-syllable construction, is known as a foot. So in a line of poetry THE COW would be considered one foot. Because when you say the words,THE is unstressed and COW is stressed. An unstressed/stressed foot is known as an iamb. That’s where the term iambic comes from.

Pentameter has 5 feet, or 5 sets of stressed and unstressed syllables. In basic iambic pentameter, a line would have 5 feet of iambs, which is an unstressed and then a stressed syllable. E.g

The below line has 5 feet, so it’s written in pentameter. And the stressing pattern is all iambs:

no BLE/ will START/ a TALE/ neeDING/ an END

Five feet = 10 syllables

I shall explain other stress patterns in future.

Is this a sonnet?
The master sends his servant on an errand
An invitation to an unknown bargain
He frowns and murmurs all sort of trash
"What kind of life is this", he complains.

Legs moving relunctantly on the solid soil
Meets an animal tilling with all might
Sweating and panting without a coy
He is admired for being the country's delight

The determination on the hunter's face
Makes the prey succumb with pity
"A job well done" says his pals
"What a delicious meat" says the city.

His eyes flunged open in a twinkle
"It must be a dream" said Minkle
Halooo dear, your rhymes r off somewhere...re-edit your work.

Noble4d. I believe am still having problems with punctuation as applied in poetry. Can you explain the concept of punctuation marks in poetry?.
Punctuation has the unique role of being able to significantly alter the way we read a written work; it can hinder some poems while enhancing others, and may do both in various places in a single work.

Cadence in poetry is influenced by the rhythm of the words, but it is also influenced by the amount and kind of punctuation. The general rule is, the more punctuation, the slower the poem will read.

When punctuation occurs at the end of a line, it is called an end-stoppedline. A run-on line, also called enjambment occurs if there is no punctuation at the end of the line, or if the idea expressed in one line is continued on in the next. Enjambment urges the reader to move to the next line without pausing.

Use of several punctuations is a choice. If you know what you are writing, you'll surely know where to place them.

Its beautiful bro, but have problems with your punctuations. There are places in your Epitaph that full stop is not required e.g lines 2-4.

LESSON 5

EPITAPH

An epitaph is a brief poem inscribed on a tombstone praising a deceased person, usually with rhyming lines.

Example:

Dedicated to my late father

Here lies humble heart daddy
Who died while smiling himself witty.
He held me softly
Thence closes his eyes gently.
He promised to take me see movies
Whence I have pass my worries.
Now that nature shimmer
He ended up six feet under.

Poems For ReviewRe: Poetry And Rap-Similarities? by noble4d(m): 12:00am On Nov 17, 2014
Wow I love here but sadly, non of you mentioned me angry.

I agree with Tex, Joseph, and jigsaw. Rap is poetry but not all rappers rap.

The similarities between Rap and poetry is basically rhythm, simile, alliteration, and metaphor.

Poetry is an art of performance, and although it may not rely on superior delivery as much as rap, a good poet grasps the rhythm of a particular poem, and allows it to flow during reading. Strong artists generate rhythm through inflection: Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Eminem, are good examples.

Similarly, a good poet has a strong sense of the pacing of their poetry, and will choose words that preserve and enhance a consistent style.

Good rap and poetry employ metaphor and simile to create imagery for different effects. Comparing the usage of metaphor and simile in poems and raps demonstrates how artists use these literary devices to breathe new life into staid words. In the lines “I come fresh like your breath after you brush/ wack MCs like that orange soda get crushed,” Eminem creatively approaches his sound with a tooth brushing simile, while extolling the consequences of “battling” him. Such colorful images create a richer rhyme, and encourage the listener’s interest.

Similarly, Christie Maurer deftly employs simile “Glorious Things,” when she describes the way snow settled onto picnic benches.

Picnic tables, prepared for winter,
lean against each other.
Soft mounds of snow rest between the crevices like nests in tree branches.

Poems For ReviewRe: "Fat I Too Hot"-Suyaman Story by noble4d(m): 12:43pm On Nov 16, 2014
laykorn:
Grilled fats are oily.
Sweet by the decree of the suyaman's maggi.
.
Grilled meats are dry.
So they smell better for the love of flies.
.
And anytime I passed by the suyaman's stand.
At Niyi beside where Tk ran his local band.
My desirous stomach cried.
And my empty pockets smiled at its whines.
.
But when it rains and the gutters fill up with sand.
Alhaja rescues the lost sand to build her paintless house.
She's old and frail so she always needs a helping hand.
So she pays the neighbourhood boys to rescue the sands for her.
.
Lifting up the sand from the gutter.
Balanced on my head all the way to Alhaja's compound.
Haa,wasn't an easy task.
But when will my tongue wallow in the oil of the suyaman's fat?
.
Jumping, jumping I visited his stand tonight.
"Abeg sell me fat!" In the pidgin he understands.
But he cut the dry meats on onto the paper.
"My broda I don sell meat, the fat I too hot"
His heavy accent, poked at a rising temper.
.

wow! You see what a laymam wouldn't see. Your analysis goes deep deeper dn Atlantic. At first, I was trying to lampoon Nepa. Bt at d end of the write up, I saw dt, Power(NEPA) could be a metaphor for the government. And I'll admit, the structure of the poem is malnurished (with time I'll blend).

As for the villanelle. Pls elucidate this term sir

Tnx vewi much, I appreciate d contribution.
Writing a villanelle is a bit difficult but there is no harm in trying.

Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem with two repeating rhymes and two refrains. The form is made up of five tercets followed by a quatrain.

The first and third lines of the opening tercet are repeated alternately in the last lines of the succeeding stanzas; then in the final stanza, the refrain serves as the poem's two concluding lines.

Writing a precise villanelle is challenging. To reduce stress and time, you can as well close the poem with three sestet and a couplet.

I shall introduce villanelle in my next lesson... Just visit the link in my signature.

Well done bro....but be careful with your dictions and use of punctuations.

On the power and the people, I could easily picture the image and mood of the poet. The poet emphasized on the ill- promises the Government gives to its people. The people were deceived by the blind largesse of the people in power. In the last three stanzas, I could strongly feel the mood of the poet using the tone of anxiety to portray his feelings.

I would have love it more if the poet had structure the poem beautifully. Maybe, five quatrains to explain the ill fated promises of the government and a villanelle to close the poem with warnings and advice for the people.

That is, if your acceleration is dumb

Go with your convoy
But leave your nephew Peace

you wrote a Shakespearean sonnet. you can as well separate the three quatrains from the rhyming couplet for better understanding. e.g

Though I am at rest
I know my momentum will soon wing me
Laxity my guest
Get ready to flee

'Cos my latent energy
Is sitting on a time bomb
My next poem will be an elegy
That is, if your acceleration is dumb.
