LiteratureRe: The Birth Of A Poet by noble4d(m):
According to the poem, the poet is sad, lamenting on the inability of the politicians to keep and fulfill their promises.

In the first stanza, the prayers of the masses in any society is to have a good leader. The politicians campaigned with deceitful humility so as to seek the votes of citizens. Their speech is as sweet as honey, wearing smiley mask, giving out food and cash to win their heart, not knowing their largesse is all pretense.

In the second & Third stanzas, After achieving their goals, they removed their smiley mask, filling their various bank accounts with cash, buying private jets, employing their love ones to offices not minding if they are qualified, and visiting places they desire...meanwhile, they forgot those who vote for them, keeping them in the dark.

The masses were sad and vociferating with the tone of regret, knowing fully well that the politicians used them for their political ambition. The masses held on tight to faith and optimistic that the table will turn.

Hmmm! As for the title, I have many by heart but " Stain on the masses" fit in.

Wow a lovely poem written in SESTET. In the fourth stanza, line 3-4 where you wrote:

For all I see on this land;
Are innocent eyes filled with sand

Since is an enjambment, using this punctuation ( ; ) is not necessary. You are good, keep on writing them. smiley

let's start with a kennings......

A Kenning is a two word phrase describing an
object often using a metaphor . A Kennings poem
is a riddle made up of several lines of kennings to
describe something or someone.

A Kennings poem consists of several stanzas of
two describing words. It can be made up of any
number of Kennings.

For example:

My little sister

Dummy-sucker
Teddy-thrower
Anything-chewer

Kiss-giver
Slave-employer
Dolly-hugger
Calm-destroyer

Milk-drinker
Nappy-leaker
Peace-breaker
Scream-shrieker

Unlike any other
My little sister

Why don't you try writing a kennings poem. let's see what you got....

" You can only tell a blind man about the absence of oil in a soup not salt".

Hallo to my noble nairalanders, here is an abode for all poem lovers who wish to improve their knowledge in the work of poetry.

I have read several poems here in the literature section, some are marvelous while some needs little touches. I have always wanted to create this thread long time ago, but time was my greatest hindrance.

"Hmmm... A child who has learn how to climb a tree, will always have a strong heart that can never be broken by any circumstances". I battled with time physically, psychologically and spiritually, and to God be the glory... I'm free for the mean time.

Hello poetry lovers, its a great pleasure to reveal what is concealed in my noble heart to you all.

As I stated earlier, I have read beautiful poems here in Nairaland that touched my noble heart...what disturbed me most is that the poets keeps going the same direction...that is to say, they only write sonnet, elegy/dirge, narrative poem, haiku, traditional poem, ode, and romantic poem. poetry is like the food we eat, they are different. I know I'm writing too much, this is how I am when things bothers me.

I hereby call upon all Nairaland writers and readers to contribute, teach, learn and pour out their thought and ideas because this is the genre of language, rhymes and emotion. I salute you.

Welcome to Noble's eyes (The abode of learning).

Wonderful bro, but take note of punctuations and endeavor to start every word of each stanza with block letter except if for enjambment. You should have maintain quatrain to make the poem flow like a river. In the second stanza, i think the first three lines suppose to be an enjambment and rhetorical question or a question. I love the language you use, so simple for a lay reader to understand. I salute you for your dexterity.

DEEP STRUCTURE OF A PLAY

It's a privilege for me to emphasize on the above topic. let me use this opportunity to humbly express my gratitude to Divepen for trusting and believing in my ability in the work of drama...and to my noble bosses and friends, I salute you.

what is structure?

It is vital for a writer to know what structure means before attempting to write. In the Collins English dictionary, structure is the arrangement and interrelationship of parts in a construction.

In playwriting, structure is simply the mechanics of your play. It is the nuts and bolts of how you tell your story through acts, scenes, sequences, units of action, character arcs, journey, and timeframe.

In construction, you will all agree with me that the way we construct our houses differs...The structure of Gtbank and shoprite differs. The same applies to plays, you will never see or read two plays the same just as content differs, every play has different structural choices, but there are three common types of structure:

1, One act play/structure

2, Three act play/structure

3, Five act play/ structure.

Before I proceed, let me briefly put emphasis on the following:

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ACT & SCENE

Most play writes do make mistakes in placing act for scene and scene for act. Playwriting is like wrestling alligators, it's an interesting and a difficult task.

An act is a part of a play defined by elements such as rising action, climax and resolution...while a scene is a part of an act defined with the changing of characters. e.g....

ACT 1
In act 1, the conflict of the story is discovered. In this act, the exposition, the introduction of the protagonist, and other characters that the protagonist met take place, as well as the incident that sets the events of the story in motion occurs. In this act we can create five to ten scenes.

BACK TO TYPES OF STRUCTURE

One act play/ structure: one act play is a short drama that consists of only one act; it has few characters and less time. One act play can offer challenges for first time writers but i must tell you its interesting, I advice you to try it out.

Three act play/ structure: The three act structure is a model used in writing. Its a popular model and structure for play writes.

The first act is usually used for exposition, to establish the main characters, their relationships and the world they live in. later in the first act, a dynamic incident occurs that confronts the main character ( the protagonist) whose attempt to deal with the incident lead to a second and more dramatic situation known as the first turning point which signals the end of the first act, ensures life will never be the same again for the protagonist, and raises a dramatic question that will be answered in the climax of the play.

The second act also refers to as " rising actions", typically depicts the protagonist's attempt to resolve the problem initiated turning point, only to find him or herself in ever worsening situation. part of the reason
protagonist seem unable to resolve their problems is because they do not yet have skills or ideas to deal with the forces of antagonism that confront them. This made them to pull their guts together to deal with their predicament which in turn changes who they are. This is referred to as character development or a character arc.

The third act features the resolution of the play. The climax is the scene or sequence in which the main tensions of the play are brought to their most intense point and the dramatic question answered leaving the protagonist and other characters with a new sense of who they are.

Five act play/structures: I will say this is an odd form of play, not commonly use.

The first act introduces the protagonist and other characters, buildings up the tension in second, third, fourth act and the fifth act is the climax.

OMA4U: A DROP OF INK

Silence smothers the speaking pen
Words muffle in your itching throats
But you've got a lot to tell the world
If no one ever reads your words
How do we hear your speaking heart?

Your heart, a barrel of plethora tales
Mind, reservoir of ruminating bales
But tamed voice keeps them crude
If you've never paint the pictures
How do we see your winning world?

Why stuck and struck in lifetime silence?
When your pen wants to elude your cage
Whip out your silent loquacious pen
Glide and slide it over the needing page
While you write in utmost ambience

You've got the light to bright the shadow
Sonorous voice to sing for us the blues
Through the flying words of your mouth
Changes may arise like phoenix from the ashes
And You too may be remembered in this axis

Series of stories standstill, and still
Waiting to be put in a pending paper
That lies fallow on the four-legged mahogany
Scene to scene; chapters to chapters
living world arise from the dead of white paper

Kiss your silent warrior with thunderous voice
Let it swoop like an eagle to your world
Let it peck words with its fluent nifty nib
And stream them down to its eloquent tip
A drop of ink makes a mighty word

For the sake of this seminar/workshop I'd like to add analysis to this poem

BACKGROUND OF THE POEM
The idea behind this poem is the 'rephrasal' of the common phrase - a drop of water makes a mighty ocean. If a drop of water could make a mighty ocean, definitely a drop of ink could also make a mighty word. This shows that the poet does not undermine what words can do. He knows the power of words and how its effects could summon a change.

'In the beginning was the word….."

THEME/ANALYSIS

This poem opens with the poet asserting that 'silence smothers the speaking pen' and goes further to show the image of someone who is willing to speak, but words disappear somewhere in his throat.
In stanza two, thus: the poet tells us that we have a lot of stories in our heart we wish to tell, but quietude makes those stories never heard. The poet uses 'comma' to relate heart and a barrel of plethora tales as metaphoric or simile expression. Same goes for mind and reservoir of ruminating bales. The poet selects the word 'bales' which means 'suffering or evil'.
Sometimes evil or sorrowful thoughts which might cause depression or inhumane actions flash through our mind, but if these thoughts could be written as stories or painted as an artwork, they may be jettisoned as they have found a life in art.

"Most artists/poets in the world may manage to get through life without little or no violence, because their works provide means for them to express themselves"

In stanza four and five, the poet encourages a singer with sonorous voice to sing and a writer to start writing. They should allow their thoughts to be penned down as the drop of their ink makes a mighty word which may inadvertently change the world.

POETIC DEVICES

STRUCTURE: The poem consists of six stanza of thirty lines that flow like a gentle river continuously, with an end-rhyme as in 'word' and 'world' of lines 27 and 30.

DICTION: The general language of this poem is direct, precise and simple. Through simplicity the images of pen that glides and slides over paper is clearly conveyed.

ALLITERATION: This is the repetition of 's' in line 1, 'silence smothers the speaking pen'. Also in 'series of stories standstill, and still'.

PARADOX: In line 2, 'words muffle in your itching throat', it is paradoxical to say that words do not come out of the mouth that is eager to speak.

PERSONIFICATION: The poet uses a lot of personifications to enhance the flow and beauty of the poem. The attributes of human beings are given to non-human, like 'silence smothers the speaking pen'. The poet portrays it as though silence suffocates the breath (speaking) of the pen. Also as if pen could speak. In line 5, 'speaking heart' and in line 8, 'voice keeps them crude'
in line 12, '…pen wants to elude your cage' and in line 13, 'loquacious pen'. in short personification is ubiquitous in verse 3 and the poem as a whole.

METAPHOR: 'Tamed voice keeps the crude' line 8. The use of metaphor here gives us visual sense of the stories and thoughts that are like crude diamond, drab and dull, but after it is refined, it becomes shine and glamourous, same as the stories of a writer may become an award winning that would be read for centuries. Just like Shakespeare (Over four hundred years) . Metaphor also gives us the visual sense of 'table' in line 23, 'four-legged mahogany'

SIMILES: In line 19, 'changes may arise like phoenix from the ashes'. Also in line 27, 'let it swoop like an eagle to your world.'

IMAGERY: 'Your heart, a barrel of plethora tales, in line 6 . Also line 7,Mind, reservoir of ruminating bales' and 'When your pen wants to elude your cage' in line 12

RHYME: There are tales/bales, cage/page, silence/ambience, paper/paper, world/word. Rhyme added to the flow of the poem.

ENJAMBMENT/RUN-ON-LINE: This is employed in stanza five in such a way that the idea of line 21 spills over to the next line, like that. 'series of stories standstill, and still/waiting to be put in a pending paper/that lies fallow on the four-legged mahogany.'

OXYMORON: In line 13, 'silence loquacious'. Two opposing words are placed together to create a sharp contrast. It portrays a garrulous pen that is kept silent by the user.

ASSONANCE: There is correspondence of vowel, 'struck and stuck', 'glide and slide', 'light and bright' and 'standstill and still'

REPETITION: 'World and word' in verse 1 is repeated in verse 6 and 'How do we' is also repeated

RETHORICAL: How do we hear your speaking heart?

TONE/MOOD: There is a general tone of motivation and inspiration. The mood of the poet is that of sympathy and emotion

THEMES
1. Motivation
2. Inspirations
3. Hope and Optimism
4. Clarion call
The poem has six stanzas each in cinquain... I love the input of analysis...thumbs up

texanomaly: Dance In the Rain
by Tex

Is it wise to mope and hide,
While watching others from behind the window pane?
"Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass.
It’s about learning to dance in the rain."

Come out. Don't grouse about.
Make your own sunshine.
Shine your light for all to see
Find your groove
And set yourself free.

Don't worry about those who
Shake their heads from behind the Glass
As drops hit your face
And wash away the past.

Turn and whirl this way and that.
Don't be the one
Who is left inside.
Get up...get out
Let joy, in your heart, abide

Arms out wide
Searching the sky.
Release all your cares,
and watch them float away.
Don't mind the stares.
I like this but would have been better if its in sonnet.

Noble cares
