Noticed that there has been threads like this for the women of other regions of Nigeria except for the region with the truly most beautiful Nigerian women - MIDDLEBELT (Benue, Kogi, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, South kaduna, FCT..) |
Rollingsbaba:Mr Man, IBB and Abdulsalami cannot be regarded middlebelters, not because they are muslims but because they are not of indigenous middlebelt tribes by origin. Neither Abdulsalami nor IBB are nupes or gwari, they both have hausa fulani fathers who migrated to settle in Minna, Niger state. |
Nobody should ever use NORTH CENTRAL as a correct definition to d middlebelt region, because d term north central is one that was just coined 'yesterday' by Babangida, when he did d geo political zone definition. The middlebelt as an identity for all Northern minority groups has started very long ago (decades ago). And then u were qualified to be called a middlebelter as long as u are from the northern region and u are not a HAUSA/fulani or Kanuri person. So the real definition of the middlebelt means ALL NORTHERN MINORITY GROUPS. The term north central is just a very confined definition. Ty Danjuma who is a Jukun man.from Taraba state was d chairman of THE MIDDLEBELT FORUM for many years, likewise Dan Suleiman, a longuda man from Adamawa. Southern Kaduna people have also identified with the middlebelt since decades ago and have also produced various leaders of middlebelt socio cultural organisations. |
baby124:Pls dont say rubbish here. Which middlebelt is dominated by muslims? i want to believe it is d middlebelt of china. How can anyone say middlebelt is muslim dominated? amongst northern/middlebelt minority groups, d christians are in the clear majority. Only Niger state minority groups have a muslim majority in the whole middlebelt, others like Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Nasarawa, southern kaduna, FCT and even Adamawa are dominantly christians. Only Kogi might be a 50/50 christian-muslim population, pls get this clear. Politically the middlebelt is no longer with the north and everyone knows that. |
Me personally i think GEJ is still a better option for the people of the middlebelt as candidate come 2015 than probably Buhari will be. But like i said that is my own opinion, dont know about others from the region. So i would like to hear from you if u are from the middlebelt. |

The traditional ruler of the largest tribe of the middlebelt. The Tor Tiv- HRH Alfred Akawe Torkula.

macof: Thank you.Yea u are kind of right but not absolutely right....because the majority of the tribes are very distinct on their own, though they may have common origins. Let's take the Idomoid (idoma family) of tribes for example....This family consists of Idoma, Igede and Agatu from Benue state, Alago, Agatu and Eloyi fron Nasarawa state and even Yalla and yache ppl from cross river state and some other few groups in Enugu state. They are jointly the APA ppl. The languages and dialects of this group of ppl are very similar but they have been classified very differenr from time. The truth is that there are many things that define an ethnic group, the colonial, political and even religious factors. For instance the Igede and Agatu people in Benue hav been very much together with the idoma ppl despite their slight differences in culture and language partly because of the fact that they have only one overall traditional ruler which is the Ochi'doma. And this Ochi'doma seat is not produced by only the idomas, the igede and Agatu have equal rights to this stoolship and this is what has really made igedes still very united with the idomas, but in the real sense, igede ppl hardly identify themselves as idomas and many of them prefer to be classified seperately. The Agatu in Benue are even more under the Idoma umbrella and many of them are ok being called idomas or Agatu, they really dont care. But the situation for the Agatu and Alago in Nasarawa state is very different. Probably because these ones have been seperated from their idoma brothers politically for a very longtime since the old Benue-Plateau state was split a longtime, the bond btw them has reduced. The Agatu and Alago in Nasarawa have their own independent traditional rulers whom i dont think recognise the supremacy of the Ochi'doma. The Alagos themselves being the second largest tribe of Nasarawa state have 3 first class traditional rulers to themselves - The Osukwo of Obi, the Osanna of Keanna and the Andoma of Doma, the Agatu in Nasarawa have no first class ruler, they only have the Oche Agatu and one other ruler which r both second class. Another factor that is said to have led to the division of this language family is said to be the invasion of fulani jihadists. Although the fulani jihadists cannot be said to have gained victory iver the Apa ppl, but they succeeded in dividing them to a great extent and influencing them heavily. This is what made Alago and Agatu people to have so many muslims. Although it may be very difficult to tell btw christians and muslims who is more in Alago and Agatu land, but to me i feel the muslims are slightly more in population. And also, because of the multiplicity of ethnic groups in that Nasarawa state, Hausa language as usual became the lingua franca there and thus many Alagos and Agatus are fluent in Hausa whereas their idoma and igede counterparts in Benue state are not. And this has made the Alagos and Agatus in Nasarawa have a greater attachment to Hausas and northern mentality. The idoma and igedes in Benue are overwhelmingly christians and Roman catholic and infact they feel more attachment to the igbos because many of them do speak igbo as a second language, especially those at the boundary areas with igbo land. At a time when an alago dominated LGA (Doma LGA) of Nasarawa was said to be merged witg Benue state, many of the Alagos objected, probably because they dont want to come under the idoma umbrella or some other reasons of which am not sure. So u can see how political and religous influnece went a long way in definning the ethnicity and ethnic consciousness of ppl. As for the Yalla and Yache ppl of cross river. Since they have been classified under the south south zone and not just a different state from motherland idoma, their political destiny and bond with their motherland has been severed to a large extent, and they now seem to have more bond with their fellow cross river (Niger deltan) minority groups. Although d bond btw dem and their motherland is still very much there. |
A Tarok girl from Plateau state.

macof: Wow! Pls how culturally assimilated are these tribes(or ethnic groups)??Well, as to what i can tell u about the ethnic groups i listed in Plateau state above......i can tell u that no 2 of those ethnic groups u see have the same language....instead almost all d ethnic groups have their own distinct dialects amongst them. However, some of these groups are related with each other and can understand each other's languages to an extent, but i dont think any of these groups can understand each other's dialects up to 50% except for probably the Mupun- Mwaghavul- Mushere and probably the Buji -jere. The mupun, mwaghavul and mushere i believe may be able to understand each other's dialects probably up to 40-70%, likewise the Buji and Jere......the Lemoro and kurama i cant really say how much they may understand each other's languages, but i know they are very much linguistically related. Culturally many of us share some aspectsof tradition amd culture probably due to common origins or longtime being neighbours. But we have all been classified different from each other right from time. U can see the numb 9 tribe on the list the Kofyar or Pan people as they are called.....they are divided into 4 subgroups, and each of these subgroups sometimes claim a distinct identity, but in the real sense they are one ppl and that is why u see i classified all of them (the Kwagallak or kwolla, Myernyang, Jipal and Doemak) as one ppl and not seperately. |
