Yes but most Annangs are actually more open to intertribal marriages than ibibios. So the tension is more from my family, it doesn't help that a cousin of mine was constantly beaten in Ikot Ekpene by her in laws for being Ibibio & was recused by my uncle. She excaped with her son. Her in laws were against the union from day1, but her husband ignored their wishes. Especially after she had their 1st son.
He might want her back but she can't die for a marriage, sadly the son suffers more as a result. My extended family are now against that union since she excaped at the point of death. Let Blackking98 keep believing that am a sad person basing my experience from nairaland posters.
As for my case, it's good to start a marriage with Blessings and all the luck from both sides. So we leave everything in God's hands, unless it's not meant to be.

Egun is careful this time around. I can't blame the doctors and nurse for running, but that still doesn't go hand in hand with the ethic of the job and even I would advise they should be sacked..... I watched it on AIT News, I'm not sure its Christ Embassy. Verify news very well before u start mentioning church name. It was actually a wedding ceremony not a church service. Pastor Chris has directed all his churches to obey government order and prayed for the government on Friday, so it can't be Christ Embassy for sure.

I've recounted lots of my personal experience there. U can keep believing in your fairytale of there being no differences, also that those posting on nairaland are not basing on their personal life experiences.
You want to advise me as if I didn't grow up in Calabar and Abak. My fiance is even half ibibio and half Annang which has affected our impending marriage, yet U think am using nairaland posters as reference. Keep on believing in your fairy tales, but Just make sure My ancestors aren't insulted anymore.

Do not envy mix people, it's worst for them because they are caught in between the fighting am talking from experience, my fiance is half Annang & half Ibibio. Similar to biracial in America caught in between the racial war

Exactly,I'm not against returning the favor but we should handle it personally and not with hasty generalisation. Not a United Akwa cross really but a United Efik and Akwa Ibom because other ethnicities in cross river don't really like us , I'm telling you from experience. Having parents from both sides of the river makes me see things differently bro,internal squabbling is nothing but petty at this point in time.

I do not see it as a family thing, you Know little or nothing about your ethnic group, after hausas and igbos, Akwa ibomites are the most spread out people in this country, infact for every one Akwa ibomite at home there are two outside the state, so if you feel those who have non ibibio mother's or those who grew up outside Akwa ibomites are not true ibibios then you need christ in your life, my point is majority of our sister tribes hold no grudge against us, so when addressing the few unfortunate ones just do it with that in mind, they will eventually fall back, I'll tell you a personal experience on why I'm saying so. About three years back there was a family I knew,there were from Central Cross river and there's this girl that stayed with them, I was shocked to find out she was Annang because she always joined her guardian's in insulting ibibios saying "ibibios are wicked" and other nasty things, we were all shocked in the family, fast forward something happened and her aunty told her the exact same words she used on other's on the girl meanwhile the girl was Annang sef, since that day she started tilting back to her roots, we started teaching her ibibio little by little and she finally came to her sensesand left them after realizing that blood is thicker than water, in Nigeria no one can differentiate who is ibibio or efik or annang or Oro, proof is in the experience I just narrated to you, we should put this internal squabbling aside and look at the bigger picture.

Just consider the following facts:

1) Oro people speak oro language, they also generally understand Efik language but only because the bible was first translated into Efik, so the missionaries used Efik to spread the gospel. Even in the most rural parts of Oro, people can understand efik, but ibibio is some irritating sound that no one relates to.

2) Ibibio is a dialect of Efik, not the other way around. Efik is the main language, it is understood by everyone, Efiks, Oros, Ibibios, Anangs, etc. The Efik bible is what is used from Ikot Ekpene to Ikot Ansa, so I wonder which alternate universe you live in where Ibibio is a language and Efik is a dialect?

3) What are the characteristics of a language, as opposed to a dialect? Efik is studied in university, Efik has poetry and artistic music from Inyang Nta Henshaw to Peter Effiom, plays and playwrights, literary luminaries, Professors of Efik language such as E.N. Amaku, Efik alphabets and etymology. Jesus, what is ibibio? Ibibio is a barbaric dialect of the efik language.

Comparing Efik and Ibibio is like comparing Queens Engligh to Pidgin English, just because more idiots speak pidgin English doesn't make it the language, it is still the sub-language/dialect of proper English.

Maybe becuase you have started getting some oil money (which you don't even produce a drop of oil, oil is produced by Oros, Ibenos, and Obolos) and you are no longer houseboy and housegirl, you think you can come on nairaland and denigrate other people's culture and language? You better think again.

The Ibibios, up until recently, have been something of 2nd class citizens in that region. Because they live in the hinterland (despite being in a predominantly Riverine/coastal region) , they had the following misfortunes:

1) The Efiks and Oros are coastal people and their main commodity during the slave trade era were ibibios. They sold ibibios to Europe slave traders and this led to the generally perception of the ibibios as inferior. Since they had no access to the coast and were mere commodity.

2) During the colonial and missionary era, the Europeans first settled in the coast - Lagos, Calabar, Oron etc. Because of this, Education and Administrative generally went to people from the coastal regions, hence the reason why you find the oldest schools in these areas - Hope Waddell Training Institute Calabar, Methodist Boys High School Oron, St. Patrick's College Calabar, Kings College Lagos, etc. Because of this, the ibibios had no access to Education until the late 20th century. This naturally placed them at a disadvantage to the Efiks and Oros, who are coastal people and had earlier interaction with Europeans, embraced western education early, etc.

Today, you see jokers come on the internet to proclaim a barbaric dialect as a language. Can you tell us even one seminal work done in the ibibio dialect? None. You think a sound is considered a language because it is chanted by numerous monkeys?

The main language of the Lower Cross River Basin is EFIK. The dialects of Efik include Ibibio and Anang. Some related languages to Efik are Oro and Ibeno.

OP, Please do your research well. there is nothing like Riverian Ibibio knows as Efik. there is also nothing like Ibibio people from Cross River State.

Nsibidi isn't an Ibibio concept. The origin of Nsibidi is from the Ekoi's and was widely used by the Ekpe members of the Efiks and Egbe/Mgbe members from the Ekoi's to secretly communicate using symbols.

Ibibio's don't have Ekpe or Obon fraternities, they use Ekpo

Ibibio language can not be written, it has no set of grammatical rules, they are still trying to invent an Ibibio etymology- something that the British Missionaries abandoned due to the difficulties and complexities involved. Efik language is still being used in Churches throughout Akwa Ibom whenever the Bible is being read or hymns are being sung. This gave the Efik language a cultural superiority over Ibibio language, something similar to the spread of Russian language over the former Soviet Republics.

Obongship is a concept the Ibibio's borrowed from the Efiks recently. They never used to call their heads or rulers Obong as a title.

There are lots of second and third generation Ibibio's living in Calabar South, Akamkpa, Odukpani and Akpabuyo, but most of them have adopted Efik names or speak Efik as their main language as a result of cultural assimilation over the years.

The origin of the word Ibibio is from Efik. It means the SHORT PEOPLE. Ibio-ibio =Short short.

efiks are very few in numbet by the way and is not everyday one comes across them like akwa ibom girls.many of my friends outside cross river even claim their efik girlfriends called ekaette or idara or mfonobong when efik girls rarely bear those names..
