Politics › Njideka Akunyili Crosby Sets A New Auction Record In New York by nwabobo(op): 8:20am On Nov 28, 2016 |
A new auction record was set for the Nigerian-born artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby in New York last week when “Drown” soared to sell for $1,092,500, over three times the high-estimate ($200,000-$300,000), in Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale.
No fewer than 11 bidders competed for the work that was eventually sold to an anonymous buyer on the telephone. This was the second time in less than two months that the auction record for Njideka Akunyili Crosby had been broken at Sotheby’s. The previous auction record for the artist was $93,750, set by her “Untitled” work from 2011 at Sotheby’s New York in September 2016. http://www.reportsafrique.com/2016/11/nigerian-born-njideka-akunyili-crosbys-art-auctions-record-1-1m-sothebys/

teamchocolate: Point of correction.. not buying.. LEASING.. and the lease lasts 99 years when yorubas will decide whether to renew or not.. It's 99 years for every other person whether from Osun or from Arochukwu. In 99 years, non of us will be here and each year, we keep getting hundreds of thousands of 99 year lease on plots of land, so? |

Alariwo2: I see.. it reflects in the way your regions are
now I know why igbos form title for themselves anywhere they go.. you'll see gburu gburu 1 of Akure, Eze ndigbo of Kano etc.
be fooling yourself you hear? That is why they are buying up your ancestral land in Lagos and designating it 'No man's land' |

Alariwo2: you should be ashamed of yourself.. Tinubu is not a public office holder yet you can't allow him rest
show me any igbo man with half his influence in Nigeria today.. NONE!
hide your head in shame Is Tinubu half as influential as Nnamdi Kanu? That is if you know the meaning of influential. |

Alariwo2: funny
yet Okorocha, Obiano or Uzor kalu can't untie Tinubu's shoes
ipob are just jealous That's because the Igbos are republican by nature. 'Igbo ama eze' literally means the Igbos know no king. We are not a tribe that bow down to one man, we are made up of independent minded men who can make decisions for themselves. |

Atk1nson: My parents are from both sides and I have stayed in both regions, so I know what I am saying. A state like Ondo has a preponderant christian population, the outgoing governor is a muslim and it has not been an issue. Intertribal marriages and conversion between religions is a quite common because the southwesterners don't really mind. Even with an Igbo parent, it was also made apparent that I am not really Igbo, while I was there the civil service only recruits people from their state, even Igbos from other states are stigmatized. If you are muslim or huasa, you will always be reminded if this difference, howbeit the Easterners are not violent unlike the Northerners.
I appreciate both of my heritage and what they stand for, but am pretty sure only someone who is ignorant or daft to the truth will deride the southwesterners as not being liberal when compared to other groups in Nigeria The Igbo like most other Africans are patrilineal; you come from where your father comes from except you were born out of wedlock ie if your mum gave birth to you when no bride price has been paid on his head, you belong to your mum's family. So with an Igbo mother married to a Yoruba man, you are Yoruba just as my cousin who has a Yoruba mother is Igbo and not Yoruba. And I hope you are not mistaking Lagos state to be representative of the entire SW. |

Atk1nson: Not everyone is as petty-minded as you are. While I am reluctant to respond to your honestly shallow post, it will be good you learn more about the South West - when compared to the rest of Nigeria, the South West fares better in ethnic and religious tolerance. And that is the main strength of the region, they have fairly liberal views. My guy park well. Is the South west more liberal than the South East? For your info, the first Mayor of Enugu was a Fulani man before Awolowo introduced tribalism into Nigerian politics. The immediate past 1st lady of Anambra, Mrs Margaret Obi is from Akwa Ibom state. |
