The Nigerian authorities want to improve the national oil refining capacity. At present, they are encouraging and accompanying initiatives in this direction. To go further, they even plan to regulate artisanal refining, which they have been fighting for years. Once banned, artisanal oil refining activities will soon be regulated by law. That was announced by Senator Eta Enang, President Buhari’s senior special adviser on Niger Delta affairs. “We are working on the policy that will regulate the operations of artisanal refineries in the Niger Delta. It will soon be operational,”he added. For several decades, the Nigerian authorities have been fighting this phenomenon, without much success. Artisanal refining persists and is developing, not only from the crude oil siphoned from the oil basin pipelines, but also thanks to tanker diversions. Thanks to a sophisticated smuggling network, the petroleum products resulting from this activity are abundantly dumped on the markets of neighbouring countries. A parallel economy that according to analysts is worth several billion dollars with a windfall that is used in particular to finance the rebel movements in the Niger Delta. Nigeria is the world’s largest victim of oil theft, with an average of 400,000 barrels lost every day. This 400,000 barrels is higher than the production of many African countries that depend on oil to finance their budgets. This is, for example, more than Ghanaian and Gabonese production combined. https://www.energymixreport.com/nigeria-govt-preps-legal-framework-for-artisanal-oil-refining-activities/ |

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the Nigerian government cannot afford the amount of funding needed to revive the country’s educational system. The president spoke on Saturday at the 49th convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Buhari said the competition for funds had become keener because of the recent increase in the number of tertiary institutions in Nigeria. . He said the financial situation had been worsened by the global economic downturn, which also affected the national revenue. Buhari, who was represented at the ceremony by the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, however, said his administration was committed to addressing the needs of tertiary institutions through budgetary allocations to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND). “I am optimistic that the on-going drive to diversify the national economy will provide the government with additional resources to improve funding for the education system,” he said. The president said the universities should also leverage other funding sources, such as from alumni, friends, the private sector, institutional linkages, and research grants, to attract additional revenue for infrastructure, research, and development. “We must also address the problems of poor work ethics and the albatross of prolonged and recurrent industrial actions by staff of universities,” the president stated. Buhari advised academic institutions across the country to embark on the kind of innovative research that could help boost production and diversify the economy. ”Our universities must continue to emphasize training in entrepreneurship so school leavers and graduates are able to become job creators instead of perennial job seekers,” he said. On his part, Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Amaechi, said the government should make effort to address the perennial challenge of poverty and inequality in the country or risk losing the youth to crime. Amaechi, who delivered the 49th convocation lecture of the university, stated that the series of protests held across the country of late, such as #ENDSARS, were as a result of increasing poverty and disaffection on the part of the citizens. Although, the current administration has introduced a number of programmes to help eradicate poverty, such as Transport Track for individuals who were into the transportation business, several Nigerians are yet to be lifted out of poverty,” the minister said. He stated that policies should be focused on the rural majority, and targeted at giving the citizens a good life and lifting them out of poverty https://independent.ng/fg-cant-afford-funding-needed-to-revive-educational-system-buhari/ |

Iba Gani Adams, the Aareonakakanfo of Yorubaland, has said Nigeria is at war with itself because “a section” of the country consistently betrays the all citizens. Adams spoke on Saturday at the annual June 12 commemoration anniversary, organised by the Oodua Peoples Congress, at the Excellence Hotel in the Ikeja area of Lagos State. According to a statement by his media aide, Kehinde Aderemi, Adams said the late MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, “will never be happy in his grave that the democracy he lived and died for has turn out to be autocratic in nature and practice.” The statement was titled, ‘June 12:Abiola will not be happy in his grave that this democracy turns autocratic- Gani Adams’. Adams also criticised the Federal Government for banning micro-blogging site Twitter saying it is an attempt to gag the press and stifle freedom of expression. “This present danger has been threatening the fragile union of our great country. And sadly, Nigeria is sliding towards an anarchical terminal point. Nigeria is at war with itself because a section of the country has always betrayed the trust which is the bond that binds us together as a nation,” he said. “A good example of this is the Federal Government’s ban and suspension of Twitter platform. As far as I am concerned, it is another ploy to tamper with the citizens’ rights to freedom of speech and expression. “And if the Federal Government succeeded in banning and suspending twitter, it would easily do the same for other social media platforms. Now that the Federal Government has said all social media platforms must be registered to continue operating in the country. We must follow the trend and rise against skewed regulations. We must stop this excessive use of federal might to truncate the ideals of democracy. “In global democracy, freedom of speech and expression is a major component of an ideal democracy. And Nigeria cannot continue to live in deceit and self-denial.” “If democracy could not guarantee freedom of speech and expression, so what system of government will guarantee such component of good governance?” he queried https://hallmarknews.com/nigeria-now-at-war-because-of-betrayal-by-one-section-gani-adams/ |
