Politics › Re: 2 Okada Riders Jailed In Enugu For Violating Ban by NwaNimo1(m): 11:28am On Jul 06, 2012
So lets look at the 'legal' aspect of this situation.

It seems the people in question were tried without jury and found guilty by some lowly magistrate.

Were they legally represented?

Are they not entitled by a trial by jury where the decision as to whther they've commited a crime is decided by independent persons?

And do they not have the right to appaeal the decison.

The 'Act' that was passed by the Enugu House of assembly goes against human right laws.

And an 'Act' is not a 'Law'!! Its only given the force of law if consented by the accussed!

It is a fundamental 'human right' that all persons have a right to earn a living!

How can a law passed in Enugu surpass 'Human Right Laws'?

To me this is jungle justice - the so called lawmakers have no understanding of law.(they are made up of mechanics, thugs and drop-outs)

If I were in Nigeria right now I would represent those jailed as it would appear they have been 'unlawfully' arrested and convicted of a crime thats not a crime - namely earning an income by provding a service people have demanded.

An appeal should be lodged and a competent lawyer should deal with these 'backward' lawmakers.

Ok, seems like nobody actually watched it but are full of comments.

My view is the presenter (white woman) seemed to have an agenda. She stated early on that Nigeria's jobless crisis was due to overpopulation and the answer was for Nigerians to stop breeding.

She then seemed to infer that Nigerians were having to many kids (on average 5) and that they needed to introuce programs aimed at birth control which would lead to reduced unemployment.(a wonderul theory)

The Nigerian man on the show made some poor comments and he didn't have his facts straight. To summarise his thoughts the $500billion in oil receipts Nigeria has seen since independence has been mismanaged by past, present and even future governments.

Governor answered the questions directed at him cleverly and spoke of facts rather than the theories being out forward by the presenter.

Another governor (didn't catch his name) was featured stating how backward and unskillfull Nigerian graduates are and thats the reason for their unemployment!

So to summarise, Nigerians need to stop having children, stop going to Nigerian universities, and stop voting for their corrupt leaders to continue fleecing them and the country.

Politics › Boko Haram / Washington - Establishing Structures To Recolonize Africa, by NwaNimo1(op): 11:27am On Jul 01, 2012
The expanding U.S. spy infrastructure in Africa, including a network of landing strips to service a fleet of intelligence-gathering aircraft, is inherently hostile to African self-dermination. That’s because "those who dictate U.S. intelligence policy make decisions on the basis of where access to oil and valuable minerals is threatened, or where an African leader has in some way resisted the imperialist program." Washington is establishing the structures to recolonize Africa, in the guise of anti-terrorism.

"There has never been, and there never will be an imperialist effort to promote true independence and self-determination in Africa."

In some ways, spies are a lot like cockroaches and rats. If you spot one, you are bound to find many more hiding in dark corners, cracks and crevices. Decades ago, revolutionaries first cast a spotlight on U.S. intelligence agents operating in Africa. Although these spies scurried back to their filthy holes, they never left the continent. They just multiplied and plotted ever greater schemes of deceit and death.

A pest control service should have been contacted during the early years of the U.S. intelligence establishment’s presence in Africa. At the time, Patrice Lumumba was Congo’s first prime minister, and because he was perceived to be an African nationalist subject to Soviet manipulation, he was assassinated in 1961 under circumstances that made it possible for the U.S. to have "plausible deniability" about responsibility for his death. However, the U.S. left behind tell-tale evidence of its interest in eliminating the progressive young leader. In his book "The Assassination of Lumumba," author Ludo De Witte wrote:

"…[T]he CIA scientist [Sidney]Gottlieb said he had been sent to the Congo with a box of poison to 'mount an operation…to either seriously incapacitate or eliminate Lumumba.’ On 21 September, during a meeting of the National Security Council with President Eisenhower, CIA Chief Allen Dulles stressed that 'Lumumba…remained a grave danger as long as he was not disposed of.’"

There is still other evidence that the CIA was engaged in plots to eliminate or destabilize Africa’s revolutionary movements and governments. Decades ago, former CIA agent John Stockwell blew the whistle about CIA involvement in Africa – most notably in Angola - in his book In Search of Enemies.

"These small planes are equipped with technology that makes it possible for them to track infrared heat patterns, intercept radio and cell phone signals and record full motion videos."

It is this historical context that causes those with genuine concerns about Africa’s welfare to roll their eyes when there are disclosures about contemporary intelligence operations that exist purportedly to monitor and disrupt terrorist operations in Africa. The most recent – supposedly "leaked" – information about such operations concerns a number of small air bases that are home to what appear to be small private aircraft. However, these small planes are equipped with technology that makes it possible for them to track infrared heat patterns, intercept radio and cell phone signals and record full motion videos. The nerve center of this operation is in Burkina Faso. From there the planes fly north to countries like Mali and Mauritania purportedly in search of al-Qaeda and its sympathizers.

This project, called "Creek Sand" is part of a program administered by U.S. Special Operations. The Washington Post said they "have played an outsize role in the Obama administration’s national security strategy…" The newspaper goes on to say: "The lightly equipped commando units train foreign security forces and perform aid missions, but they also include teams dedicated to tracking and killing terrorism suspects."

When it comes to killing terrorism suspects in Somalia and elsewhere with drones, critics have complained that a recent CIA pronouncement seems to betray the agency’s belief that it is not strictly bound by the laws of war. Human Rights Watch has criticized a speech made in April by Stephen Preston, the CIA’s general counsel at Harvard Law School. Preston incorrectly implied that the laws that limit lethal attacks to valid military targets during situations of armed conflict are not strict legal requirements, but are instead mere principles. Human Rights Watch has identified this as an important issue because outside of the laws of war, international human rights law permits killing only when it is necessary to save human life.

"The lightly equipped commando units train foreign security forces and perform aid missions, but they also include teams dedicated to tracking and killing terrorism suspects."

To the extent that the CIA is concerned about running afoul of the law or creating a public outcry about its unconscionable activities, it has relied on proxies to do its dirty work. This was certainly the case in Libya where CIA agents implemented a program to arm those who were attempting to dislodge the Gadhafi government. According to reports, the CIA has also operated a secret base at Mogadishu airport in Somalia where Somali assassination teams are trained to kill suspected terrorists, and where secret interrogations are conducted of suspects who have been subjected to rendition.

Finally, and in a period when it is obvious that Africa is already infested with American spies, the Pentagon is creating yet another intelligence agency. The Baltimore Sun reported that the new Defense Clandestine Service "…will work alongside CIA counterparts in places such as Africa, where al Qaeda has grown more active, and Asia, where Chinese military expansion and North Korean and Iranian weapons ambitions are drawing increasing U.S. concern."

Notwithstanding the presence of these agencies in Africa, their intelligence operations have never been about Africa or Africans. In the early years of the post-colonial period, the West made Africa a theater for Cold War maneuvers and a contest with the Soviet Union over who would claim the continent for their respective "spheres of influence." In more recent years, Africa has been a staging ground for a so-called war against terrorism.

If in years past there had been genuine U.S. concern that the Soviet Union would in some way win the loyalty, hearts and minds of Africans; or if there are now real worries that terrorist organizations will find a home in Africa, U.S. policy would always have been, and always would be to ensure that Africans themselves are able to prosper from their natural wealth and in every way determine their own destiny. That is because countries emerging from colonial domination are never anxious to become "client states" when they can go it alone. Likewise, in regions that are desperately poor and where it is obvious that the economic devastation has been caused by exploitation and plunder by western corporations, it is easy for extremists to recruit those who want to strike back at the source of their community’s misery. Yet, it is nearly impossible to persuade independent, prosperous people to engage in suicide bombing missions.

"Africa has been a staging ground for a so-called war against terrorism."

Nevertheless, there has never been, and there never will be an imperialist effort to promote true independence and self-determination in Africa. That is because regardless of the purported mission – whether it is Cold War advantage or terrorist surveillance – in all cases those who dictate U.S. intelligence policy make decisions about operational focus on the basis of where access to oil and valuable minerals is threatened, or where an African leader has in some way resisted the imperialist program. Ethics, morality and justice are not factors in the equation, and Africans tend to find themselves as either spectators or victims of bloody escapades that they did not create and which certainly are in no way beneficial to Africa.

In many cases an infestation of vermin and pests is eliminated with poisons and traps. In the case of U.S. spies in Africa, the solution begins with shining a light on all of their operations so that when the continent is united and capable of expelling imperialists once and for all, Africans will know where to find not only the spies, but also their nests.

Foreign Affairs › Re: HAITI: Humanitarian Aid For Earthquake Victims Used To Build Five Star Hotels by NwaNimo1(op): 11:20am On Jul 01, 2012
Haiti's Comeback

According to the AP report: "Signs of Haiti's comeback can also be seen in the 105-room Best Western hotel being built within blocks of shanty-covered hillsides." The five star Best Western project is worth $15.7 million and is located in the plush city of Petionville. The “first US hotel in Haiti” is funded by local investors but will be managed by a Dallas firm and is expected to create 150 jobs. (Ibid.)

While several hotels are being built to provide "room and board" for potential foreign investors, very few homes are being built for locals and “the vast majority of construction has been temporary shelters with a life span between two, maximum five years”, according to Gerardo Ducos from Amnesty International. (AlertNet, op. cit.)

In order to shut down the Champ de Mars camp, which would be tantamount to the expulsion of more than 17,000 people, a controversial Haitian government program funded by Canada has been offering 500$ to dwellers who leave and find a home elsewhere. In practice this project leads to the de facto expropriation of slum dwellers in high value central downtown area of Port-au-Prince. While the amount is enough to pay the rent for a year, Ducos wonders: “What happens to the people when their rent money runs out in a year?” (Ibid.).

Will there be enough jobs for them in the hotel industry?

Will the salaries be high enough to pay the rent?

A lot of unanswered questions remain.
Foreign Affairs › Re: HAITI: Humanitarian Aid For Earthquake Victims Used To Build Five Star Hotels by NwaNimo1(op): 11:19am On Jul 01, 2012
The Role of the Red Cross

The AP report confirms that the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) bought land for $10.5 million and are also thinking of building a hotel: “The money came from donations raised by national Red Cross agencies for quake recovery, causing some to wonder if the money would be better used to house displaced people rather than aid workers.” (AP, op. cit, emphasis added).

Where did the money come from? Where did that money go?

Millions of people in the US, Canada and Western Europe donated part of their savings to their local Red Cross, which was then channeled to the IFRC, the world's largest humanitarian umbrella organization. The IFRC claims to be "providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions." (See IFRC website, emphasis added)

This land purchase by IFRC not only violates its humantiarian mandate but also the trust of its constituent Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations worldwide. Red Cross donations should have gone supporting IFRC's mandate with regard to "shelter recovery and settlement planning", in a post-disaster environment as clearly stated on the IFC website:

"Most people who have lost their homes through a disaster want to repair or rebuilt their homes as soon as possible. Many start the reconstruction process immediately after a disaster, whenever circumstances and resources permit. Shelter assistance provided by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) recognises this, and where appropriate prioritises the provision of materials, tools, cash and technical assistance to support the process." (emphasis added)

Foreign Aid: Who Benefits?

Foreign “aid” often benefits NGOs of the donor country as well as the local business elites in the recipient country. The Council on Hemispheric Affairs has blamed both Bill Clinton as well previous U.S. presidents for having maintained Haiti in conditions of "endemic poverty through a self-serving U.S. rice export policy […] By 2003, approximately 80% of all rice consumed in Haiti was imported from the United States.” (Leah Chavla, Bill Clinton’s Heavy Hand on Haiti’s Vulnerable Agricultural Economy: The American Rice Scandal, Council on Hemispheric Affairs, April 13, 2010.)

Last January iWatch News reported:

According to [U.S] government figures, 1,537 contracts had been awarded [to U.S. Companies] for a total of $204,604,670, as of last fall. Only 23 of the contracts went to Haitian companies, totaling $4,841,426. (Marjorie Valbrun, Haitian firms few and far between on reconstruction rosters, iWatch News, January 11, 2012.)

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a division of the World Bank, has also invested $7.5 million in the project, claiming it will “create employment, generate business opportunities for small businesses and promote sustainable development.” Since 2006, $68.6 millions have been invested by IFC in the Haitian private sector. Despite those investments, the per capita GDP in Haiti has seen very little improvement during that period. There is a fine line between slavery and an average $2 a day salary, which ousted president Jean Bertrand Aristide wanted to abolish prior to his overthrow in a US-French-Canadian sponsored Coup d'Etat. (La Société Financière Internationale (IFC) investit dans un projet hôtelier en Haiti pour supporter les efforts de reconstruction, IFC, June 30, 2010.)

"The good news" is that the project will create jobs for Haitians. The Oasis foundation has also created a program to train workers for the tourism industry. The project promoter, Jerry Tardieu told AP “the new hotels will help more people get out of the camps by giving them jobs to pay for rent on homes being rehabilitated by government and non-profit organizations.” He says 600 people have been employed for the hotel’s construction and once open and running, 250 to 300 new jobs will be created. On top of the $2 million invested in the hotel, a modest grant of $264,000 goes to the “Oasis Hotel’s nonprofit arm, the Oasis Foundation [...] bolstering the hospitality sector by reopening l’École Hôtelière Haitienne (the Haiti Hotel School) [...] (Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, Programs: Oasis). Basically those funds are used to make comfortable hotel rooms, lounges and cafes for foreigners and "train Haitians to serve them " in a congenial five star environment.

While, Haiti was lacking in hotel rooms in the wake of the earthquake and job creation is a key to poverty reduction, a majority of the population still live in makeshift shelters of cardboard, scrap metal and old bed sheets. People struggle to have water to drink and food on their table — and in many cases they do not have a table. Meanwhile, the construction of luxury hotels for foreigners is a number one priority, in comparison to "housing for the locals".

Tourism Minister Stephanie B. Villedrouin “said all of those [850] hotel rooms [destroyed in the earthquake] will have been replaced by the end of the year [...] Villedrouin said Port-au-Prince officially has a 60 percent occupancy rate but many of the hotels are too rustic for international travelers [including the NGO, World Bank and USAID staff on mission to Haiti]."(AP, op cit, emphasis added)

The "international travelers" are the unspoken victims of rudimentary and rustic hotel accomodation when on mission to Haiti, according to Mariott's executive Alejandro Acevedo. "Marriott International, ...is building a $45 million, 174-room hotel [in Haiti] in partnership with mobile phone company Digicel Group." Marriott's Acevedo complained that "even he had to share a room with his boss on a recent visit because of the dearth of hotel space.”

Meanwhile, most Haitians live in overcrowded camps such as Champ de Mars camp in Port-au-Prince, “densely packed with shacks made from bed sheets, tarpaulin and scrap metal, which provide flimsy shelter for some 17,000 people.” Forced evictions also take place regularly, according to AlertNet. (Anastasia Moloney, Haiti's homeless face housing lottery, AlertNet, February 23, 2012.)
Foreign Affairs › HAITI: Humanitarian Aid For Earthquake Victims Used To Build Five Star Hotels by NwaNimo1(op): 11:18am On Jul 01, 2012
As some 500 000 Haitians still live in displaced camps, five star hotels are being built amid shanty towns.

As part of the country's "Reconstruction", The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund recently invested $2 million in the Royal Oasis Hotel, a deluxe structure to be built in a poverty-stricken metropolitan area "filled with displaced-persons camps housing hundreds of thousands”. Royal Oasis belongs to a Haitian investment group (SCIOP SA) and will be managed by the Spanish chain Occidental Hotels & Resorts.

AP reported in April that funds raised by the former US Presidents to help the neediest Haitians are now being used to build a hotel for "rich foreigners" including tourists as well many foreign NGO "aid workers" currently in Haiti. (Daniel Trenton, AP: New hotels arise amid ruins in Haitian capital, Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, April 29, 2012)

It is worth noting that Western governments have insisted that aid money for Haiti be given to NGOs and foundations rather than to the Haitian government, which they consider to be "corrupt".

In the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake, people in the US, Canada and the EU, who made donations to those humanitarian organisations and NGOs did not realize that their contribution to Haiti's reconstruction would be channeled towards the building of five star hotels to house foreign businessmen. Their expectation was that the money would be used to provide food and housing for the Haitian people.

The Royal Oasis as well as other hotel projects totalling over $100 million are, according to AP, “raising hopes that thousands of [foreign] investors will soon fill their air-conditioned rooms looking to build factories and tourist infrastructure” (emphasis added)

The “10-story building […] will include an art gallery, three restaurants, a commercial bank and high-end shops. Construction on the Royal Oasis began before the earthquake and is expected to finish by the end of the year.” The earthquake was therefore a blessing for the hotel promoter and contractors, bringing $2 million dollars originally raised to “go directly to supplying these material needs [food, water, shelter, first-aid supplies]” (see add below). Among the companies involved in the construction of the Royal Oasis two are Haitian, one is Canadian (Montreal) and the other American (Miami).

Politics › Lagosians In Certain Area's Warned To Evacuate Due To Upcoming Rains!! by NwaNimo1(op): 7:45pm On Jun 29, 2012
Prepare For Heavier Rains, Lagos Warns Residents

The Lagos State Government has warned Lagosians to be prepared for heavier rains and thunderstorm within the next two weeks.

The government said the expected heavier rainfall and windstorms were envisaged the peak period of this year’s rainy season.

Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello advised residents living along low line areas of Eti-Osa, Badiya, Amukoko, Makoko, Iwaya, Ajegunle, Owode, Agiliti, among others to vacate these areas during this period, and move to upland as the intense rain would be accompanied with windstorm.

According to him, as a proactive and responsive administration, “this alert became necessary in order to sensitise Lagosians, particularly those that reside in flood-prone areas to be on the alert in order to prevent loss of lives and property.”

“The State Government has intensified its mid rain cleaning exercise which involves cleaning of drainages across the state in order to reduce to the barest minimum the incidence of flooding in the state.

“Lagosians should desist from acts that could lead to flooding, which include dumping of waste into canals, and erecting of structures along drainage channels, which are man-made and can be prevented,” he said.

Bello said in an emergency, Lagosians should take full advantage of the services of Drainage Engineers and Drainage Maintenance officers posted to all 57 local Government Council Areas of the state, and relate with them effectively to solve their drainage challenges.

“These officers are readily available to provide relief and solutions to all flooding challenges in each local government area across the state.

“Lagosians should not panic any time it rains, but be rest assured that Lagos, being a coastal state, may initially experience ‘flash flood’ which will definitely disappear, as soon as the rains subsides.

“This alert is a wakeup call for all Lagosians to desist from acts that could lead to flooding as well as join hands with the Lagos State Government to ensure we have a flood free Lagos,” he added.

Politics › Boko Haram To Cease 'Killings' During Ramadam? by NwaNimo1(op): 7:08pm On Jun 29, 2012
The National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki on Friday at a stakeholders meeting in Maiduguri, said he hopes to end the attacks by Boko Haram before the Ramadan fast.

The retired colonel who was appointed a week earlier has been meeting with religious and traditional leaders in the Northern part of the country in a bid to put an end to the incessant attacks by the group.

Earlier in the year Jonathan had said that the Boko Haram menace will end in June, but recent indications show that there has been a change in plan.

The fasting period is likely to begin July 20, giving Dasuki less than a month, to tackle a sect that has caused the death of over 1000 people since 2009.

The insurgency of Boko Haram which has lead to bombings, gunfights with security agents and assassinations, worries the international community which has been affected by the surging violence in the North. The U.S. in tackling the problem put three prominent members of Boko Haram on its terrorist watch list.

The Boko Haram challenge has affected business in the Northern part of Nigeria, as companies and traders have either suspended activities or moved base. All this has been done in a bid to avoid the stemming violence.

Health › World's First Genetically-modified Babies Born In The U.S by NwaNimo1(op): 6:32pm On Jun 29, 2012
The world's first geneticallymodified humans have been created, it was revealed last night.
The disclosure that 30 healthy babies were born after a series of experiments in the United States provoked another furious debate about ethics.

So far, two of the babies have been tested and have been found to contain genes from three 'parents'.
Fifteen of the children were born in the past three years as a result of one experimental programme at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St Barnabas in New Jersey.

The babies were born to women who had problems conceiving. Extra genes from a female donor were inserted into their eggs before they were fertilised in an attempt to enable them to conceive.
Genetic fingerprint tests on two one-year- old children confirm that they have inherited DNA from three adults --two women and one man.

The fact that the children have inherited the extra genes and incorporated them into their 'germline' means that they will, in turn, be able to pass them on to their own offspring.
Altering the human germline - in effect tinkering with the very make-up of our species - is a technique shunned by the vast majority of the world's scientists.

Geneticists fear that one day this method could be used to create new races of humans with extra, desired characteristics such as strength or high intelligence.

Writing in the journal Human Reproduction, the researchers, led by fertility pioneer Professor Jacques Cohen, say that this 'is the first case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal healthy children'.
Some experts severely criticised the experiments. Lord Winston, of the Hammersmith Hospital in West London, told the BBC yesterday: 'Regarding the treat-ment of the infertile, there is no evidence that this technique is worth doing . . . I am very surprised that it was even carried out at this stage. It would certainly not be allowed in Britain.'

John Smeaton, national director of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, said: 'One has tremendous sympathy for couples who suffer infertility problems. But this seems to be a further illustration of the fact that the whole process of in vitro fertilisation as a means of conceiving babies leads to babies being regarded as objects on a production line.

'It is a further and very worrying step down the wrong road for humanity.' Professor Cohen and his colleagues diagnosed that the women were infertile because they had defects in tiny structures in their egg cells, called mitochondria.

They took eggs from donors and, using a fine needle, sucked some of the internal material - containing 'healthy' mitochondria - and injected it into eggs from the women wanting to conceive.
Because mitochondria contain genes, the babies resulting from the treatment have inherited DNA from both women. These genes can now be passed down the germline along the maternal line.

A spokesman for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which regulates 'assisted reproduction' technology in Britain, said that it would not license the technique here because it involved altering the germline.
Jacques Cohen is regarded as a brilliant but controversial scientist who has pushed the boundaries of assisted reproduction technologies.

He developed a technique which allows infertile men to have their own children, by injecting sperm DNA straight into the egg in the lab.

Prior to this, only infertile women were able to conceive using IVF. Last year, Professor Cohen said that his expertise would allow him to clone children --a prospect treated with horror by the mainstream scientific community.
'It would be an afternoon's work for one of my students,' he said, adding that he had been approached by 'at least three' individuals wishing to create a cloned child, but had turned down their requests.
