Just found this

Rankings for postal service(2018):
Despite a gap between industrialised and developing countries, standout performers in each developing region showed that this gap is not insurmountable. Poland, Singapore, Tunisia, Brazil and Nigeria all led the way in their respective regions..
South Africa ranks 88th in the world, with a score of 33.34. Africa’s average score is 22.37, with Nigeria (51), Mauritius (54), Morocco (62) and Ghana (74) the best performers in this geographical area. South Africa is ninth in Africa, also behind Kenya (87), Togo (85), Cameroon (77), and Uganda (79)

“Nigeria has achieved the top spot in the region thanks to sustained performance in terms of reliability and connectivity, in spite of a drop in resilience.

“Indeed, with a score of 85.12, Nigeria’s reliability is among the 25 highest in the sample. This is corroborated by relatively good average delivery times of 3.6, 4.4 and 2.0 days for letters, parcels and express mail respectively,” the report said.

Will EKO City also handles it police & military smiley Seriously the country need to be fixed - not band aids. Tatus is private. Konza is gov.

Eko Atlantic will probably have its own police and security system... The land Eko city is on is private.. the government gave them the land for 70 years... then after the 70 they have to give back the land to lagos.. so basically Eko will be another ccountry lol

Then something need to give. Kenya we got corruption - but it the usual 5-10% - not Nigeria 100%. We have nearly defeated alshabab - apart from remote places. We long dealt with kidnapping. The technology to deal with some of these issues are now very cheap - in kenya rather than get 4G licence fee from Safaricom - we told them to give to Huawei - who deployed intelligent cameras & tech all over Nairobi & Mombasa - that make crimes in Nairobi very easy to detect and deter....now nearly 4yrs after west gate....we have had lots of calm...from when grenades exploded daily...to now..when it not happened in nearly 4yrs.

Now you build EKo City - and there is no electricity, no security, no water, no sewage, there is kidnapping, there is terror, there is okada and yellow ugly shared taxis (dafno) - and then it again like ABUJA - get the dubious rank as one worst cities to live in grin grin. Then lets build another city....as new one decay!

Sort the basics - electricity 24-7 - that nearly every country should deal with!

Abuja has a central sewage system and piped water... that's not a major issue in Abuja.... Other cities in Nigeria though lack these facilties..

Eko Atlanitc and Centenary city are planned to have 24/7 power.. they're building power plants there. They both have central sewage system and piped water.. i though you saw the pics of underground pipes being laid in eko Atlantic...

Plus these projects are handled and financed by the private sector and not the government unlike tatu city

That make sense - but why would Dubai spend billion of dollars building a new city - without working on the security of the city. Or you think a city is concrete ugly jungle I see in most of Nigeria? You talk terrorism - like it cannot be defeated - look at Nairobi - we had a lot of that - but we invested more than 150M dollars (or around 500B NAIRA!!) in CCTV & such technology everywhere - number plate recognition - chinese gave us latest phone tracking & secure radio communication etc - now terrorism or kidnapping in Nairobi has reduce to nearly zero.

Nairobi & Mombasa is now under serious camera surveillance...we have managed to foil so many attacks from Alshabab. These are intelligent cameras..with facial recognition...number plate recognition...and we continue to make heavy investment in security.

Why are you spending 1.6 billion dollars on military...how is that suppose to provide security to 200M people. Poor Kenya without oil is spending 1B on the army.We spend another 2B plus on the police.

Boko Haram is home-grown terror - why hasn't nigeria defeated those idiots? With you oil - you cannot even beat Uganda - who have latest fighter jets - SUkhois!

Another issue you forgot is the fulani herdsmen... cows are becoming more valuubale than human lives.. And the president isn't doing anything about it, because he's fulani

The security infrastructure of Nigeria is a complete mess

corruption is a major part to why Boko Haram hasn't been defeated. The president gave $2 billion dollars for buying of weapons and such to the army but they squandered it, they each took their own share..
I even heard the military gives weapons to Boko Haram

Why is it rank as lowly as Lagos. You can pick any reputable city ranking and it sits down there comfortably as one worst city. We can add one more adjective- most expensively built worse city. How did you guys manage to achieve that - build a new EKO CITY grin or is Centenary City that everyone agree is as worse as JUBA or BANGUI grin. Just how do you guys manage to pull these things!!

From what I've seen Abuja is ranked low because of terrorism and crime (Boko Haram) and not infrastructure like Lagos. It also seems ranking also includes the villages on the outskirts of Abuja

The city suffers from high crime rates from intercommunal violence. The British Foreign Office tells travelers: "You could get kidnapped or find yourself caught up in a terrorist or other violent incident."

The infrastructure hasn't crumbled yet.. The city is just getting started.. there's a whole lot more infrastructure to be built

Abuja doesn't have a soul yet like Lagos.. It's a place i would advice retirees to go... Abuja is much slower than Lagos

I know - Abacha did spend billion of dollars there - mostly to escape coup down south in Lagos - and it appears apart from keeping the power stranglehold for northern muslims - Abuja which was suppose to solve Lagos mess is not any better. Obviously for a city to consistently appear among-st the worst cities in Africa and World..something clearly is wrong.

I do't know enough about Abuja but my theory is ever since Abancha invested there - the city has struggled to maintain the infrastructure & it's probably has crumbled.

Abuja is much much much better than Lagos

Abuja is slightly better than Lagos - in the worst cities to live in. You'll only see the same picture of the same places..but dig deeper..and youll find a city that lack the basic infrastructure.
Below are The top 15 worst cities to live in Africa 2018. From least worst (15) to worst (1)
15. Harare, Zimbabwe
14. Lagos, Nigeria
13. Abuja, Nigeria
12. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso
11. Antananarivo, Madagascar
10. Tripoli, Libya
9. Niamey, Niger
8. Bamako, Mali
7. Nouakchott, Mauritania
6. Conakry, Guinea Republic
5. Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo
4. Brazzaville, Congo
3. N’Djamena Chad
2. Khartoum Sudan
1. Bangui Central African Republic

Abuja has good infrastructure, much better than Lagos. There's piped water, underground sewage, beautiful wide roads, etc.. everything you would expect to find in a modern city( i also heard the city also has almost 24 hour supply of power).... The problem with Abuja is that it's closer to the North, Boko Haram has already attacked it previously.. so there's a security threat. Also before Abuja was built, villagers used to live on that land.. so what you'll find now is that on the outskirts of Abuja, you have villagers who are poor and live in tenement houses that hardly have facilities like toilets, piped water, tarred roads, electricity.

Abuja is pretty expensive.. It's a city for the rich, even some middle class Nigerians can't afford housing in the city..
Even Aljazeera mentioned Abuja as one of the most modern cities in Africa

Here's the article by Aljazeera about Abuja: https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/features/nigeria-clearing-locals-abuja-capital-180408072143042.html

But you still have the power to elect the right people right? I believe that power is in your hands

Almost all countries in Africa had the West influence (Naija included) it just that they decided to settle in SA due to our fair weather,so I'm failing to see where you going with your write-up tbh.The biggest lie ever told is that corruption was almost non existence during white rule, only a deaf, dumb and blind fellow would believe that

Never said there wasn't corruption during white rule. Every country including developed countries have corruption. It's just likely that there was less corruption during white rule which was when SA was really progressing. If you look stats you'll notice more developed countries have less corruption. Today according to stats Nigeria ranks among the most corrupt countries in Africa. SA according to rankings is less corrupt than Nigeria, and again SA is more developed than Nigeria. There's a corelation between levels of corruption and levels of development

Nigeria's a relatively young democracy. We only returned to voting leaders about 19 years ago...
You can vote someone who you think is genuine but turns out once he's elected, the true side of the candidate unfolds... Today, Nigerians who voted for the current President of Nigeria(Buhari) regret the decision massively..

You really want to compare military rule with 400 years of oppression?

When you have military dictator ship that's massively corrupt, you get a shitty nation. A former dictator alone had over $4 billion government funds put into overseas banks...

Nigeria is rich country with huge oil wealth... But when you get leaders who don't care for the citizens nor the nation, you get a country with poor citizens and dilapidated infrastructure in all sectors

South Africa on the other was a settler country with large European influence and rule.. Today South Africa is the most advanced economy on the continent (not the largest) and one of the most successful, prosperous countries in the continent... Generally during white rule, there was less corruption and better leadership... South Africa during white rule was one of the progressing countries in the world, SA even had nuclear power.. I admit the white exploited the blacks... South Africa's success today is thanks to the Europeans...

But Nowadays i don't know whether South Africa will continue to be successful under black rule..

Personally, I just want Nigeria to catch up to SA then overtake SA

They set the prices directly, which means (in practice) prices are kept low (for metered customers)....which means DISCOS are chronically short of cash to buy power from GENCOS...who in turn are short of cash to buy gas from suppliers...that want their cash in dollars.

I spend N2000 monthly on power as a metered customer living in a two bedroom.Estimated (at my previous place of residence) was N5000-6000 montly. In Europe,it is N15000 for a metered customer. Then add the fact that the whole estimated billing thing is a racket, plus the fact many people don't pay for power....and you see the problem.

The solution...increasing power bills...is going to meet with protests. Bringing in foreign investors...more protests because they too would charge higher. So,we have a power sector harmed by lack of cash on one hand, and corruption on the other.

Is there plans to deregulate the power sector, so that the market determines the price?

Who cares about protests, it's for the benefit of Nigeria

Since the age of 17yrs, the Economist magazine has been my favourite secular mag. I am a fan of the free market and a massive supporter of deregulation and liberalisation.

However, the primary reason why the country is persistently plagued with unnecessarily high lending rates is caused by what Henry Boyo called the Naira aubstitituion policy.

Every month, the FG distributes money earned from oil to the 3 tiers of government. The oil income earned in dollars is substituted to naira before paid to them.

The substitution to naira and disbursements leads to a sharp increase on money supply and the primary cause of the perpetual excess of money in circulation.

CBN is then forced to soak up the excess money using very expensive bonds.

Henry Boyo has advised that rather than substitute the dollar earned with naira, why not pay with dollar certificates redeemable at banks?
It will now be a case of dollars chasing naira.

This will bring an end to the persistent excess money and bring down inflation and inflationary pressure as well.

With a huge reduction in inflation, Nibor rates can come down and with it bank lending rates.

CBN will have no need to continue running the preswnt tight monetary policy eventually loosening it.

This will lead to a collapse in lending cost.

Nigeria, a country that had a budget deficit of barely 1.5% of GDP for about a decade has NP businn with double digits lending rates

Soludo during his time at CBN tried to introduce it but the governors cried to Yar'Adua that they were not used to it. He listened to them and ensured it was scrapped

so is there any hope high lending can come down to at least 15% in the next 5 years?

Keep in mind that the economy...the high lending rates, and the bad debts...are because we really don't have enough money in the system, and because we rely too much on just revenues from oil (yesterday it was agric, etc.).

There is a simple route out of this...end subsides, deregulate everything...and while prices go up...investment flows in, jobs get created, and we have an end to bad investments.

Banks will even lend at lower rates because they are sure of getting their money back.

That is what this government needs to do...and that is what the past government should have done. (sigh).

does the government subsidize the electricity sector in Nigeria?

You're making the mistake blaming people.

The bucks stops at the governments door.

Lending rates in double digits are crushing the real sector of the economy.

How do you expect industrialist to borrow at 28% and you want the sector to boom? Dangote wondered how the government expects agriculture to thrive when interest rates are 20% (as of then)

High lending rates kill productivity which is extremely important for the country's companies to be globally competitive.

If lending rates were in single digits, they would feel confident importing advanced machinery from abroad that would make them highly competitive and productive.

With low interest rates, they can continue borrowing and investing until the Nigerian market becomes too small . They then turn aggressively to exports.

AMCON has been seizing company assets right left and center. Some are not some reprehensible fat cat who refuses to pay his debts but reputable blue chip companies.

I was at Victory Park Estate, Osapa London last year built by UAC.

Apparently, the estate had been taken over by AMCON!

I've wondered about this. It's hard to predict economic growth with the very high interest rates in Nigeria..

At this point Nigeria should have had a huge textile industry, huge petrochemical industry, and even a large agro-processing industry...

There's so much potential in Nigeria, we just the the right leader to unlock this potential.
