Blueflyboy you want to relocate to Nigeria after 8 years of academic and job success in America? Hmm, it looks like village people have started to dial your number. Village people in Nigeria are strong o grin
@OP
Most people here have given you their piece of advice: the 'no place like home' crew, and the 'home can be where you say it is'.

Everyone's situation might not be the same but, some people could have similar situations. Some people could come back home (Nigeria) & become better off, while some can come back & become worse off.

Most graduates who came back to Nigeria (especially those from Europe), didn't do it of their own will, but were forced by the immigration policies in their guest countries (complete your education & go back home). Host countries making work permits tough to get for graduates, as well as for their intending employers.

Like you, most spent same number of years (if not more), acquiring degrees & pro experiences. They believed that with such high level of qualifications & work/personal experiences, getting settled into the Nigerian environment would be less of a threat. But reverse became the case.

Coming back home is not as easy as people make it appear. Life here is tough. Even the 'survival of the fittest' adage does not hold anymore. With Masters, PhD/experiences, settling back with ease in Nigeria is no longer guaranteed.

You may find a job but, it could be low paying. Also, there is the problem of employment @ will here in Nigeria.
The competition is high as, lots of international qualified graduates came back home all almost at the same period & a lot of them are home, jobless, frustrated & depressed.

Our gvt keep encouraging its citizens to come back home when they cannot provide solutions to accommodate these qualified hands & do not have any laid out plans to help them settle back in, or how to put their expertise to good use.

I understand you're in a crossroad due to immigration policies that's why the thought of wanting to come back home. Nevertheless, if you can find a way to migrate to other countries where they have less rigid & unfriendly immigration policies towards international students, why not try it (that is if you still have enough time left on your student stay). But if you don't, then, you don't really have a choice to make but to journey home.

But I must tell you the truth. I took the part of journeying home after my studies abroad (BSc, Masters, work experience, same number of years abroad as you) instead of going on to get my PhD (which I have always desired) and I tell you this, its been nothing but regrets especially since the change in gvt. This present gvt seem to lack direction.

May you make wise decisions regarding your situation.

Kindly keep us informed of the new development.

Wish you the best.

Its not only the 1st children this happens to. It can be any of the kids.

Sincerely, if you happen to fall into the shoes of this your friend in your family, you will understand how hurting it is when these your siblings grow up to full adults, begin to disrespect you BC things have become tough for you.

I understand where you wrote of thinking suicidal. People will find it difficult to understand but, when after years of suffering and labouring for your siblings without concentrating on yourself and it all turns out that you didn't actually reach your desired height in life, being mistreated by the same people you gave your all to, can make you think twice about helping your immediate family (both older & younger ones).

You don't have to feel entitled to them BC you took care of them, but, after years of toiling for them and life turns out with a bit of set back, instead of them encouraging you, you will be surprised at how much they will contribute to your feelings of taking your own life.

Nairaland GeneralJonathan Speaks Out... by nypha(op): 9:09am On Feb 10, 2017
I Didn't Hand Over A Collapsed Nation To Buhari - Dr. Goodluck Jonathan-
.
Former President, Goodluck Jonathan has replied his critics who accused him of handing over a nation at the verge of collapse to his successor, President Muhammadu Buhari.
.
Jonathan recounted the achievements of his government to include, handing over a country that produced the richest man in Africa.
.
Jonathan said, “I took over a Nigeria that was the second largest economy in Africa with a GDP of $270.5 billion in 2009, I handed over a Nigeria that had grown to become the largest economy in Africa and the 24th largest economy in the World with a GDP of $574 billion.
.
“I inherited a Nigeria in which the trains were not working, and handed over a Nigeria in which citizens can safely travel by trains again. I also inherited a country where illiteracy rate particularly in the Northern part was alarming. I handed over a country where every state in the North and indeed all the states had a Federal University. I inherited a country where there was total infrastructural decay in all the unity schools and colleges of education. But I handed over a country with massive infrastructural improvement in almost higher institutions. I inherited a country where agricultural inputs and production were almost zero. But I handed over a country where a bag of rice was sold for N6,500 to N7000. My regime since the establishment of ecological fund office did more irrigation dams in the North and other parts of the country than other subsequent administrations put together. I inherited epileptic fuel supplies resulting to endless queues at the filling stations. I maintained despite enormous challenges of fuel subsidies and handed over a relatively stable fuel regime.
.
I inherited a Nigeria that was a net importer of cement, and handed over a Nigeria that is a net exporter of cement.
.
In 2009 the richest Nigerian was the 5th richest man in Africa, but I handed over a Nigeria that produced the richest man in Africa.
.
The former President further stated " I inherited a country where people were almost losing hope on the credibility of its electoral process but I noticed that democracy will continue to grow in the African continent if leaders value the process of elections more than the product of the process. I handed over electoral process that engendered fairness in its conduct and conclusiveness ".
.
He said, “Even in the 2015 general elections in my country, Nigeria, there was potential for major crisis if I was not a President duly elected by the will of the people.
.
“The campaigns leading to the elections almost polarized the country into Christian vs Muslims and North vs South divide.
.
Most World leaders were worried that our elections will result into major crisis.
Some pundits even from here in the United States said that those elections would spell the end of Nigeria and that we would cease to exist as a nation because of the polls.
.
That is where the leadership question comes into play.
.
As a leader that was duly elected by the people, I considered the people’s interest first.
.
How do I manage my people to avoid killings and destruction of properties?
.
With the interest of the people propelling all the decisions I took, we were able to sail through.
.
Indeed, we sailed through because I refused to interfere with the independence of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, having appointed a man I had never met in my life to run it. We sailed through because I maintained and still believe that my personal ambition, interest is not worth the blood of any single Nigerian.
.
My philosophy was simple. For elections to be credible, I as a leader, must value the process more than the product of the process. And the citizens must have confidence in the electoral body.
.
Pls circulate it for them to know. The deceit is getting too much

I told myself that I will no longer contribute to religious topics on NL but am simply contributing to this not to say much, but to say that I am happy that Nigerians are beginning to understand that almost 90% of the population is strongly been held in hostage by religious scammers.

Thanks to Okija Juju and others who are logical with their reasoning. The problem is simply fanaticism. No matter how much we try to make our fellow country men & women see things with their true analytical eyes, they turn blind to reality.
Is it because we are too afraid to confront life challenges that make most of us Nigerians cling to their belief of something that has been proven to be non-existent?
We are too afraid to face difficulties thus; we need these so called "men of god" to keep our hope alive.

Like someone said here; most of us grew up in homes where our parents are "clergy" people as such, we know & have almost read the bible through.
As adults, we should be able to analyse for ourselves and be at least, true to ourselves that these "pastors" have become multi-billionaires from looting their followers.
I must acknowledge that they are good at what they do!

Desola:
Don't be silly! What is representation in the centre when it is only for money sharing between politicians. Your sons and daughters are occupying significant positions now so tell me how that has directly translated to development in your region?

On a personal note, the marginalisation of Yoruba thieves at the centre is a very welcomed development as it allows the government in Yorubaland(ACN) to look inwardly and galvanize for regional co-operation. Leave talk, despite our shadowy representation at the top, aren't we working in our region? That really is what matters. Governance that directly relates to the existence of the people and not just a mere chest beating exercise that we are represented in looting which would not be apportioned to us. Your mentality shows the mind of an average ibo man, it's all about "see me na me dey hia" with absolute zilch!

Lastly, may I advise you to abandon your futile effort at stroking the flames of emotional blackmail to gain validation or support for your hatred of the north. You lot are just getting pathetic by the second. If you feel that the north is marginalising you, take up arms and fight them, afterall you have done so and lost gallantly in the past so you at least have practical experience. Do it again, there is a shortage of 'sharwama'.

Like I say always, yes, some northerners are barbarians but their barbaric nature is mostly due to ignorance and subjugation by their elites. That leaves little to be said about half educated ibos who still carry the spirit of hatred and doom toward the west. As far as i'm concerned, in Nigeria of today; ibos are the enemies.
Oh! how sorry I feel for the country called Nigeria & her people. Why this hatred? What is happening to us? Ibo this, Yoruba that, Hausa this; are you the only groups in this country?
I feel very sad to only read deep hate for one another; no wonder the killing in the country of one another with religion in disguise! It's sad!!!

Moreover, where is this supposed letter? Post it lets see the real writing and signature!
PoliticsRe: Jonathan Orders Issuance Of Visas At Airports by nypha: 9:28am On Nov 20, 2011
I am amazed at the president we have and the way/manner at which he makes his internal and immigration policies.

M. Jonathan thinks that policies are not drafted with the right ministers through strategic ways. Does he think that immigration policies should be based on his instinct?

M. President, I suggest you go back to school and learn international strategic management.
First, it was the issue of according 10 years visa, now it's hazel free visa at port of entry; how unthoughtful. Who is your political/legal adviser?

An international class mate of mine here in France once told me that one of her cousin said to her that when she finishes with her masters degree programme, she should come over to Nigeria, that she only needs €3000 to have the Nigerian passport.

M. Jonathan it seems the rate of joblessness in Nigeria doesn't concern you.
France used to give 10 years residency to foreigners who's been residing here for 10 years, but given the rate of chômage, it has been cancelled. Even skilled immigration is being controlled through tight immigration policies.
I am not saying that we should immitate them but, at least M. Jonathan, can't Nigeria reciprocate how visa is accorded to foreigners?

UK citizens (I learnt), now get 10 years visa into Nigeria for investment, only to come in and create colonial/aparthied system in VI/Lekki area where (like I learnt), they segregate areas where Nigerians can come in, and the other part is reserved for them oyinbos. How appalling

Another area of concern regarding this visa upon arrival is that of our custom officers at point of arrival (e.g., airport). This policy will be an avenue for them to enrich their wallets.
Considering how most Nigerians 'adore oyinbo', and shine their white teeth (even when the person in front of them is not even smiling but mocking them), they will not scrutinize or question these visitors prospective for immigration into Nigeria (how long they intend to stay, what they will be doing, there means of existence in the country, how they intend to support their investment financially (here I am talking of CAPITAL), if they'll use local labour or bring in labour from their respective countries (like the Chinese who even come with their own drivers/chefs), etc). This area of immigration is best left to the experts (embassies).

Foreigners come to our country and are given permanent residents/Nigerian passport without proving their interest to share in our cultures and common values. They live in communities, criticize everything Nigerian, get favoured and treated like demi-gods. How will they value the original people of the country, let alone their cultures and values?

GEJ, if you want investors to come flocking at the gates of Nigeria, concern yourself with economic development issues first, control internal immigration, and other pressing issues, manage wisely the country for which electors voted, and allow the ministers nominated/voted to do their job.

@ the person who listed countries that practice visa at port of entries. These types of visa are mainly for tourism. Nigeria is not a tourist destination; we should concentrate on what we are specialized in, which is business.
RomanceRe: Females Handle Breakups Better Than Males by nypha: 10:21pm On Sep 22, 2011
Who handles brake-up better depends on how involved you were, how the brake-up occured, or if there are loved ones around to cheer you up and keep you going.

We can't really advice on not being truely involved in a relationship. One thing I know is that, if you find yourself in a brake-up, do not allow it to take the good part of you.
If your partner is gone and you understand that there is no coming back together, then pull yourself together and go out there where there is someone new to spice up your life.
Sometimes, brake-up is good in life because, it helps us stay on track. No judging yourself if you are doing the right thing.

Male or female, keeping side attractions ( sports, extra-relationships, extra curricular activities and individual social life different from that of our partner) helps us stay less emotionally dependant to a partner, and helps cure brake-up depression quicker than necessary.

@anonimi,

Good job to have posted this article related to IBBs' military govt years. Nigerians who were not born before 1993 when IBB left office may not understand why most people on this thread are against IBB coming back to power.

If care is not taken, and following the way election is conducted in Nigeria, we could end up with an unelected but a nominated president as usual.
It is mostly in this country that past presidents always come up to rule again. Is it that we do not have able hands among the Nigerian youths?

I believe IBB could be running for the highest post of office in order to hold the sit for his dear arrogant 'agè butter' son. We might as well become one of these francophone countries (such as Congo) where the presidential post have become almost a thing of dynasty / heir.

If IBB becomes president, what will his agenda be? Could he kindly tell us in advance if we are to tighten our belts for another austerity measures? Will the Greek people's leaving condition (under structural adjustment program) be far better than ours? Will there be IMF dictating our lives?
What will be the new promises of IBB that we will be forced to believe? Are our maximum prisons well equipped to welcome new political prisoners?

As for possible future asylum seekers in all parts of the world, your stories might be accepted if IBB becomes the next Nigerian president!!!
Your choice to make!!!

i don't know why the federal govt lost its legitimate monopoly of authority in its own territory to the sharia.
in one of my political science classes, my lecturer used nigeria as an example of one among the only countries in the world where sits two powers: the federal power, and the sharia power.

i agree with mikeansy that the welfare of civil servants and fellow citizens should be a serious concern to the federal govt. if the north can't accommodate others, then, the govt should not risque precious work force by sending them to the north.

anyway, nigerian govt seem not to care for lives and like some would say: "if we can reduce the increasing n° of the population through sharia, so be it."

Nigerians still don't understand that there is nothing like law existing in that part of the world. I marvel that this shocks people; we have been seeing this all our life.
I have been a victime of this agression from the law enforcement agents.

A military officer who beat the evening light out of my life at mile 2 simply because he did not get the space to get into a bus. Unfortunately for me, I was by his side and equally struggling to get into the same bus.

@kobojunkie

I think we should stop being ignorant as regards to how people spend their money should be no one's business. Religion palaver in Nigeria ofcourse needs to concern all and sundry.

I'm not forcing my ideas on anyone, but I'm only concerned at the level of backwardness, and the extent of this deep and unanalysing beleive in god in the country.
The country is infested by religion that even engineers, doctors, other well educated entities allow these mostly uneducated individuals to fool them.

Our universities are no longer a place where thinkers are trained, a place where we are supposed to bring up world level entities who can make a difference (do remarkable things in the economic/scientific etc fields). We only groom bandwagons who can't even get up to challeng the system that is ruining and hording our ressource and income for even their 5th generations.

Go to the University of Lagos on a normal day, you often fall on traffic on campus. Why? because the mosques and church are having either seminars or prayers.
Students skip lectures only to attend prayer meetings. Friday afternoons are lecture free period because our muslim counterparts have to go for worship.

Nigeria is the right climate for religious extrimist programmes. Its not really the people's fault but a govt who does not see the need to be concerned of its people's wellfare, a govt who is not concerned about its position/place in the world.

Students who graduate from our nigerian universities are not taken seriously outside our shores. Why will they be taken seriously when they don't take themselves seriously either.

When we read on the net and in books on religion, Nigeria is mentioned 3rd after Brazil and one other country. These unrepenting deceivers bounce on citizens whom their futur have been left in the hands of fate by their irresponsible govt.

We copy US as religious model. We can not even think seriously and try to know the thinking ability of a basic american who simply can not place their country on the world map.

Nigeria is too old for time wasting and thus should not spend its precious time to train daft minds. This Nigeria is you and I cry cry
PoliticsRe: Church Business And Country Development by nypha(op): 9:42pm On Nov 01, 2008
You see, I know you religious blind people will not see it practically.

With this level of fanatism, how will the country progress.

Yes, lets believe that there are infants who don't pay to the pastor, and other adults who give 25 naira, it is still half a billion €/year but the 100 naira/person each sunday was an average.

Indeed, what about the engineers of oil companies who give up to 750 000 naira/year (4500 €); that is 10% of offshore international salary. Bankers who give 1/10 of their salaries to the church?

I am not refering to beer drinkers in the bar palours, at least they are paying their tithes to the beer and night life industries, which creates jobs.

Am not only talking abouts christians here, but any kind of abuse of the poor man's hopes for miracles. This is robbery in disguise.

The government has its part to play, but if these churches should at least use the money showered upon them by their poor victims, in community action/programmes, at least we will depend a bit less on an inexisting government.

How can you say one is a hater just because I think that people should wake up from their slumber. You go to church on foot while your pastor comes on a newly released car that a master degree holder, qualified from a prestigious international university will not dream to earn untill after 10 years of experience.
These pastors come in imported designer suits, while you come in collectibles.

Like someone wrote, your money builds universities your kids can't afford to attend. A pastor owns TV/radio stations from your offerings and tihtes. bDon't worry, his kids are already schooling in US.

Wake up and think.

If we are now stopped on arrival at the airport in our own country just because we wrote articles on our blog, simply to highlighten our fellow country men of the wrong doings of our leaders, it is not supposed to mean any misharp.

It is only intended for the people concerned to take positive measures and correct what have been criticized of their acts.

I use to wonder why Nigeria always have a special requirement for visa applications to tourist countries.
Now I understand why, it's because they might be seing Nigeria as an islamic country, and therby apply strict rules that are applied to terrorist countries.

Apart from the fact that we nigerians have our odd characters, this OIC stuff might contribute to one of the reasons why we are treated like these islamic terrorist countries.

Even countries like Indonesia have the guts to include Nigeria in this visa ristriction process. You can check out this site below and you will find out the list of countries listed are mainly in the OIC club.

This thread might bring a polemic to nairaland. But I would like us nigerians to ask ourselves the question as to why we are too religious even in the 21st century.
Have nigerians not yet come of age to understand that religion should not guide our daily activities?

It shocks me to read articles that are simply logical, only to read people refering always to god. The IG was talking on TV last time, and had to make reference to the Bible about Moses in a country where there leaves people of all religions and all works of life.

Why don't we ask ourselves who is this god that is represented as a white man? why are all the actors in jesus films all white men? why is everything good white and all black things bad? Are we not tired of being fooled?

When will Nigeria stop to be under the influence of religion; we are leaving in religious mental jail, which brings about big loss to our economy.

Have we asked what pastors do with all the offering they receive every sundays, how come they don't feel guilt in extorting poor people in order to ride Hummer jeeps. Company staffs robb from their companies and give to the churches.

If we make a mathematical calculus here:

suppose we have about 50% of nigerians who are christians thus making 70 million people. Lets assume that every one of them gives only 100 naira every sunday.
This represents 7 billion naira each sunday (43.7 million euros). This makes 2.2 billion euros a year.

Dont you think this is enough to build good hospitals, schools to educate our young ones for a brighter tomorrow for Nigeria ?

A few things this money can pay:

186 000 teachers with 1000 euros (140 000 Nairas)/month salary.

1/2 of an oil deep water field development (which NNPC can develop itself without needing foreign investment)

10 airbus A330 (bigger model)

2 nuclear plants of 1000MW each

In a year, we can construct 62 kilometres of automatic state of the art metro/subway (36 Million € /km) : (VI to Elekon beach for instance, or two lines Ikeja/VI)

I advice that instead of giving this load of money to the so called "man of god", nigerians should invest this money into infrastructures and public actions.
This way the never ending expectations for miracles that we go to church for, will happen quicker in our days.

I believe its not only when you are married that you sometimes wish to out of it. It happens as well in unmarried relationships. But when you are married, its a more different issue because, you've tied the nots.

I am in a very healthy marriage with my hubby, but that does not mean that I do not sometimes wish to be single. Like sometimes, I want to simply have cereals and just go to bed, I want to go clubbing alone but hubby wants to come along. Traveling with my hubby is fun and lovely, but I sometimes want to travel alone.

These are things you sometimes want to do alone, stay longer on the net, but hubby would love you to join him in bed when its night time.
