The reputation of the Russian army has been decimated. Russian undoing was going ahead with the invasion in the first place. America has long been looking for ways to engage the Russian forces without directly having boots on the ground. They have seen that Russian forces pose no treats to American military with this war in Ukraine. America started with sanctions to starve Russian federation of funds because war consume a lot of money.

Russia need to be careful to prevent economic recession. If Putin needed to wait for 9 months before he comes up with surprises then he need new sets of generals. The only impact Russia made in this war was when Iran suicide drone was introduced. The lesson from this war is that Russian forces lack experience needed for warfare. America already gotten what they needed from the war. This war has shown that Russian forces does not pose any threat to the American forces. Russia only rely on nuclear weapons to win this war.

Well, the Russians did hold that part of the Kherson Oblast quite successfully for months. The pullback honestly makes sense as the river will definitely serve as a natural barrier. Besides, Gen. Suruviken did say that he'll make hard decisions to protect his men.

That said, I don't see this pullback/retreat going down well in Russia and will likely hurt Putin and the already mauled reputation and morale of the Russian Armed Forces and the Russian Federation at large. Any offensive against Mykolaiv and Odessa are now officially off the table. Oh be rest assured that the west and Ukraine will play this continuously and fully utilize it in their information war.
