Katsumoto:
A progressive tax; those who earn more, pay more. So you have a ceiling or two; those above a particular ceiling pay a higher rate (35%) and then anything above the top ceiling can also be taxed at a higher rate (40-45%).

e.g
N0 - N800,000 - No Tax
N800,001 - N12,000,000 - 20%
N13,000,001 - N39,000,000 - 34%
Above N40M - 45%

You are not going to announce that you are taxing parties; just put a sales tax on most products and services and have a higher tax for products and services that are associated with parties. So you pay a tax when you call Sunny Ade or rent canopies etc. The local government can also make you pay a local tax to cover cleanup, noise, disturbance, etc

I don't have a problem with Owambe but I do have a problem with people who are unable to provide basic amenities for their kids throwing lavish parties. Fstarnger, dont even deny that happens.
Yeah very common. One of the things that must change. My people will rather have a 17th yr Anniversary/remembrance party of their late father/grandfather/mother than spend money on quality education of their children.

Another funny thing is that; it a lot easier to get individual loans to organize owambe  parties than get such loans to finance your biz or pay your children school fees. Even when you planned to have a small party, people will come around to tell you why it is a must for you to slaughter 2-3 cows and invite Sunny Ade to the party.
While w'ld Dangote want to stick to Truck transport for his materials If cargo rail is faster, safer and cheaper?

If you are speaking of FG I can understand, I recognize the drag effect of a silly but strong FG.

EX: Dangote gets products out of Lagos traffic quickly through cargo rail, deposits at Oyo or SW border warehouse for onward truck movement to North or east, same thing when he's bringing products or materials in from his factories outside the SW why would he work against that?

Except he's making extra money from all those trucks he uses/leases.
Because Dangote is also into haulage biz, not just for his companies but for many other companies. So technically the rail project will be closing a line of his biz/investments.

Some people believe he is one of the people that influenced Yaradua to cancel the rail line project that obj started.

A new track has just been abandoned in London. a major one. The private sector didn't want to fund it and the new govt bucked.
SW states are just developing and cannot be compared with a developed city like London with a lot of options and viable alternatives, the opportunities are more in SW.

ola olabiy:
What I am saying is Lagos will always have investors who are interested. They know that Lagos is rich enough to meet its obligations.

Osun is crippled - financially! No private sector in Osun. It is non-existent.

Lagos is industrialized, the commercial nerve centre of West Africa.
You are not looking at the multiplying effect of this project in the long run; can you imagine how many companies/businesses that will spring up as a result of this?

And with constant development and GDP growth, I do not expect Osun and Ekiti to remain the way they are, look beyond 10 years Ola.

Let's just agree with your guesstimate.  It is still not viable.

150 USD gross. The running costs/salaries/logistics costs/miscellaneous/ maintenance of such a large operation will be close to the gross if not more. Also, there will be disruptions/ power outages which will make your number of passengers less than 50,000 within a month. They want realiability. They have to be at work, after all.

And, how do you source power for a project like this without our national grid?
Ola, if we are going to make any giant leap, railways is the way to go. It is the future.

We might not get there in 4years but we must start somewhere, and the earlier the better. Also, no one is suggesting it will be a wholly private venture also.

I actually believe it will be viable under a proper management devoid of corruption. Truth is there is no better alternative.

I agree with you on roads but rail lines were laid by British almost 2 centuries ago. New rail network is almost a necessity. There is a reason why the Chinese have invested mainly on rail.

Incompetence and lack of visionary leadership happened to Odua group
Yes I agree, but am not sure we have the resources to  develop an entirely new rail network in 4 years, I will support a gradual process starting from what is on the ground.

Since there is already a rail line from Lagos-Abeokuta-Ibadan-Ogbomosho (I think), lets link that line eastward, like Ibadan-Ilesha- Akure-Ado ekiti through PPP
PoliticsRe: Sw: What Is Next? by OAM4J: 1:18am On Apr 28, 2011
Fact is we cannot drive away the FG from our region overnight and if you ask me, I will say this is not the time to start taking over the FG infrastructures

Lets compel the FG to do the right thing, fix all the inter state roads and the rail lines. We can build new link roads and rail lines connecting other  cities in SW through PPP.

I think our focus now should be to improve our IGR, grow our GDP, job creation and incentives to attract both foreign and local investors

And lets develop our state capitals and city centers; going home shouldn't be like going to farm.

There used to be Odua Investements or is it Odua grp of companies, belonging to the SW states, what happened to the group?
