2011: S’East govs back Jonathan

Governors of the five South-East states on Sunday resolved to support the candidacy of President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 elections.

In a communique after a meeting in Enugu, the governors said they would urge all delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party in the zone to vote for the Jonathan/Namadi Sambo ticket in the forthcoming primaries of the party.

Speaking on their behalf, Anambra State Governor Peter Obi said the decision was in keeping faith with their earlier decision to support a presidential aspirant with the best programme that would address the marginalisation of the South-East and political imbalance in Nigeria.

However, Obi, who is the chairman of the Forum of South-East Governors, warned groups and individuals in the habit of organising summits and conferences in the names and offices of governors of the zone to desist from such

The governors, however, declined to yield to the demands of striking lecturers in the zone.

The governors had after their meeting on August 21, 2010 said they would not declare support for Jonathan until he declared his intention.

The President finally declared his intention at a rally in Abuja two weeks ago.

Buhari and Ribadu are the real threats to PDP now. will be good if they can combine their resources though.

2011: Tension In ACN Over Buhari, Ribadu

There appears to be  palpable tension in Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) as both General Muhammadu Buhari and former chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, are set to contest the presidential ticket of the party, ahead of 2011 poll.

Malam Ribadu had last Friday in Abuja declared his presidential ambition, while addressing newsmen and followed it early this week with the announcement that he was going to contest on the party’s platform.

In a swift move, however, General Buhari’s party, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) re-opened merger talks with ACN last Thursday in Lagos, in its bid to realise the General’s presidential ambition in 2011.

The CPC team was led by the party’s deputy chairman, Board of Trustees (BOT), Alhaji Sule Hamman while ACN National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, led the party’s team.

The meeting came days before next Monday’s deadline which General Buhari’s party had requested to be allowed to consult with stakeholders, following earlier talks between ACN and CPC teams, which ended in a deadlock

Saturday Tribune learnt that the ACN, which has all along been seeking a northern candidate as its presidential standard bearer and had focused Buhari, appears to be in dilemma on how to handle the situation, following the declaration of Ribadu to contest on the party’s platform.

According to findings, Ribadu’s declaration is said to have excited not a few leaders and chieftains of the party, just as the renewed alliance talks between ACN and Buhari’s CPC have done also to a number of party chieftains.

However, another source stated that the dilemma confronting the party now is be how to resolve the riddle of who should secure the party’s ticket if the alliance between ACN and CPC sails through finaly.

It is learnt that the duo are said to be enjoying a lot of followership in the ACN while the party would need a lot of wisdom to handle the situation in other to avoid a backlash, since it would have to vote for just one of them as its standard bearer at the forthcoming national convention.

Saturday Tribune learnt that part of the reasons the ACN is seeking a merger or alliance with Buhari’s CPC has to do with mutual benefits derivable for the two parties.

It is expected that if the two parties pool resources together, they would register their presence in the North, where Buhari’s popularity is said to  be increasing on daily basis and also South-West, where the ACN is on ground in some states, including Lagos and Edo.

It was gathered that earlier talks between the ACN and CPC reached a deadlock, following alleged insistence of General Buhari’s camp that it be allowed to produce the ACN national chairman and field a number of governorship candidates, among others if his party, CPC were to merge with ACN.

Further consultation between the ACN and CPC has been slated for early October.

PoliticsRe: Jonathan Sacks Goc's, Brigade Of Guard Commanders by OAM4J: 4:52pm On Sep 25, 2010
Dede1:
Gen. Becomrich0 and electricity engineer, I salute. As you usual, the sketch map you posted lacked many fundamental aspects of military parlance. You did not include logistics, chain of command and intestinal fortitude to fight. If so-called COAS Ihiejirika will depend on Yoruba born GOC such as Shoboki to match from Lagos to Ilorin and Enugu, it means he is lost in history. By the way, you did not show you will account for the loyalty of brigade and battalion commanders not to mention the NCOs.

Granted there are logical model and service stubs in engineering, you failed to show how retiring and redeploying of Service Chiefs and GOCs by GEJ fit into your concept. I shall not mention Nigeria in discussion of warfare such as nuclear or chemical. Even in conventional warfare, what GEJ has done is begging for reasons other than paranoia.

If I may fellow the ridiculous perception of certain individuals on this board, GEJ has injected tribalism into the Nigerian armed forces which was one of the cardinal reasons that precipitated January 15, 1966 coup.
the bold is exactly my worries. Obj did more than this and it was not seen as a tribalistic action but as an attempt to professionalized the military. The statement of Ima Niboro that "the decision was in line with the desire of the president to properly reposition the Army in line with federal character" shouldn't have been used. He should have find a more diplomatic reason as his excuse.

Ibadan stands still for Alao-Akala

IT was a gathering of the who-is-who in the Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a tumultuous crowd as the state governor, Chief Adebayo Alao-Akala, on Thursday, formally declared his intention to contest the 2011 governorship election on the ticket of the party.

With the Lekan Salami Stadium, venue of the declaration,  filled with party leaders from all levels in the state, contestants into various elective positions in the 2011 elections and other party faithful, most of the roads leading to the venue of declaration, as well as adjoining roads, recorded traffic congestion.

The venue of the declaration was also jam-packed with several branded cars, with a long bus, branded with the logo of the President Goodluck Jonathan/Alao-Akala campaign posters, blocking the Ekotedo/Adamasingba end of the Mokola Road.

Governor Alao-Akala arrived in a long convoy of cars along with members of the state executive council around 12 noon.

Mounting the rostrum at about 2.30 p.m, after various party leaders had spoken, the governor said his declaration was in response to the yearnings of the people of the state.
“I hearken to your wish; I shall run. When I was sworn in as the executive governor of Oyo State on May 29, 2007, I made some specific pledges to you, the good people of Oyo State. The sum total of that covenant was that I would make a positive difference during my tenure as governor.

“To the glory of God, I stand before you today, at the twilight of my first term in office and say, ‘we have made a difference,’ thereby changing the mentality that no one else can do it.

“As people can now see, it is manifestly clear that, with the fear of God and unwavering determination, we can make things work, even within a short period of time.

“My dear compatriots and good people of Oyo State, since the beginning of this year, many men of goodwill, comprising notable citizens, professionals, market women, the academic community, religious leaders, corporate bodies, artisans and other interest groups have approached and urged me to declare interest for a second term.

“My standard response was to thank them for their concern, but that I needed all my concentration to fulfil my promises, which I made during the electioneering of 2007, and upon which our people freely voted for me.

“I often explained to them to understand our challenges in Oyo State, many of which are man-made, while others are products of past lethargy.

“Under these circumstances, I needed to face my job full-throttle, without entertaining any distraction whatsoever and from whoever,” he said.

Declaring that his administration had recorded landmark achievements in all spheres, he took a swipe at the opposition in the state, saying that they had not succeeded in pulling him down, in spite of the fact that “they have tried all the tricks in the books, both clean and not so clean tactics.”

He decried the insistence that democracy could only thrive when an indigene of a particular area governed the state, asking “why can’t a qualified man or woman from Kisi, Okeretedo, Agbonle, Iware or Lanlate aspire to be governor of Oyo State?

He said that the PDP Elders  Forum, comprising former governors and other leaders across the state, at two different meetings early this year, unanimously agreed on his candidature for the 2011 election, adding that he would run along with his deputy, Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja.

In his speech at the event, the chairman on the occasion, who is also a  former governor of Oyo State, Dr Omololu Olun-loyo, said there was the need to understand the facts about Governor Alao-Akala and his second term ambition before anybody could make known his/her dislikes or prejudices against him.

“The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, at present, allows a maximum of two terms for the governor of a state. Alao-Akala is, therefore, entitled to have a try at a second term. It is a matter of personal choice for him to decide and I believe he has so decided.

“The next stage is for his party to decide as to who would be allowed among all the equally entitled aspirants, so as to assume a level playing field for all the contestants. This is not a private post or a company’s Chief Executive position that can be decided once and for all on the basis of preferment in a boardroom or among a gathering of shareholders.

“I must use this opportunity to appeal to the people of the state to give Alao-Akala a good hearing  when he campaigns for election at election time. At the same time, I must also advise him and his closest assistants, aides and advisers to be more receptive, not only to the justified appreciation of his government, but also to the constructive criticisms, especially from important quarters,” he said.

Other PDP leaders in the state also unanimously agreed that the governor had done more than enough to deserve a second term of office, adding that he stood a very good chance of winning the party’s primaries and emerging victorious in the 2011 elections.
