Everyone on here seems to not disprove the article. It has left me wondering what the reaction would have been if the BBC made this into another documentary,
Wait until the 'Nigerian Patriots' come on board and you'll see how they'll turn it into home-base vs diaspora debate. Then, they'll begin to prove that Nigerians in diaspora only complain because they dont love Nigeria.

The fact is we will never make any real progress until we tell ourselves the TRUTH.

Finally in Calabar, I saw a white person. A white woman sat alone at the Marina Resort. Over four days in Nigeria, I had not seen a single white person, except Migo, of course. But I had thought about white people. Inching through the crazed urban chaos of Onitsha and Aba and Owerri and other cities, I imagined seeing just one white person living among the Nigerians.

It almost stood to reason by sheer numbers. Wouldn’t some white person among the billions on the planet choose to stake his or her life in these demented urban centers, amid the noise and the garbage and the exhaust and the insanity? Wouldn’t at least one find a charm amid the abomination, some redeeming value, some worthiness?

I knew the answer was no. The question, really, was: Are we that far apart?
Are we not?  huh

How more competitive is La Liga compared to the Premiership when he took on Chelsea?

Am not one of his fans, but he is a 1st class coach. He most likely will make a difference at Madrid.
PoliticsRe: Naptip To Jail People Who Have Housemaids by OAM4J: 2:07pm On Jul 13, 2010
Jakumo:
Child labor should be abolished in all countries seeking to be counted among the world's civilized societies, BUT, once any individual attains the ADULT age of 18 years old, they should be free to seek employment wherever they please within the delineated boundaries of criminal law, be that as a gardener, housegirl or nuclear scientist.

Provided that ALL public and private employees are hired and paid in accordance with relevant labor laws applicable to any given jurisdiction, particularly those statutes that proscribe physical abuse, and those that specify equitable salary rates commensurate with experience and education, the state has NO business regulating the career choices of LAW ABIDING ADULTS.

If, true, this bizarre declaration that the employment of house help is BANNED in Nigeria could only have emanated from the twisted imagination of an idle and confused individual who deserves to be put to pasture promptly.
No law can be against employment of an adult for any legitimate work.

The new law is only to protect the underage. Many of these housemaids in Lagos are kids, mostly abused and exploited. It is about time child labour in any guise STOP.

Tasma:
Have no problem at all with terminology "ward" or "househelp". The real problem is how the person is being treated by his/her custodians. Many "wards" are still being abused in the homes they stay in. It's a pity that we don't have a system where an abused kid can make a report to a law enforcement officer. Knowing Nigeria such a complaint will probably not be taken seriously.
This is the essence of the new law. Now the abused kids complains will be taken seriously, because they are not supposed to be employed in the 1st place.

The added good news is that the government is also setting up institutions that would cater for these abused kids.

The only concern I have is how effective they would be, judging from how badly implemented other laws have been

There are many decent hotels along the airport road and around Ajao Estate/Osolo way cant remember their names now.

BTW, 9-10PM is not too late to move about in Lagos. Is not that bad. Just arrange for a trustworthy person to pick you up or let him arrange your transportation from the airport

PoliticsRe: Naptip To Jail People Who Have Housemaids by OAM4J: 5:00am On Jul 13, 2010
lol, ok i understand you now.

Well, the housemaids children can live with their mother, assist their mother, but they must not be employee of their mum's employer if they are underage.

The employer cannot insist, else he/she risks arrest if found out, except there is a cover-up conspiracy btw the mother, the children and the employer

I think what the government is trying to achieve is to have all the children in school and put an end to child-labour. This is good, it will reduce the illiteracy rate.

chiogo:
True, but being a house-help is def. not the way to riches.

But at least this so-called law would protect the under-aged ones. Would there be more poverty? Yes. But these parents should take up their responsibility and stop giving off their under-aged child for child labor to some pompous rich family.
I agree with you 100%

I also support the under-age thing but even the adult ones are exploited and they can't do anything about it since they probably don't have shelter elsewhere.
In Nigeria and many African countries, many rich oppress the poor (not just housemaids) that explains the desperation why everyone wants to get rich

Well, that's why naija is messed up. They should go apply at the day care centers and work there(although that's not likely to happen anytime soon in naija). I don't think the idea of house-helps esp. with them living in the employer's home is good. It's probably done more harm than good. And yeah, there's poverty and no jobs. . . which is sad really because most times, these house-helps still don't get an education. They just drift from one house to another doing "house-help job" for YEARS and no salary. They might as well find something more beneficial to do. What that is, I dunno.
Remove the abuse and the exploitations, housemaids are not different from babysitters who choose to live in.

I think the new law is only against using underage as housemaids, which I support.

They were removed right before the ban was lifted, and I typed that part too. Part of the condition for lifting the ban include the probe? Is the NFA above the law of the land that the president of the land would need to make silly treats such as the one we witnessed in order to get the law enforcement agency to probe this organization? Is that what you are implying?

This all looks more like the same old jokes we have witnessed over and over in the same country. This so-called cleanup process could have started long before the tournament did.  Investigations like this take place in organizations and companies around the world every day. I don't see why our government could not have conducted itself better . .  instead we got the slap right when the whole world was watching, not before or long after. If you consider it foolish for a leader to call for a probe just before a major tournament, then what should we label a situation where the same leader attempted the probe instead DURING the major tournament?  I think this would have saved us the humiliation we got instead as a result of the ban. The ban definitely made it seem as if we had no spirit of sportsmanship as a nation. Just when I thought the French team were the lamest, he had to go prove me wrong with a complete ban RIGHT AFTER we lost.
Anyway I never supported the ban at any time.

And as for the probe, better late than never.

a) Only a couple of days ago, your president, without thinking of the potential image issues, rushed to BAN, not penalize, but BAN the NFA, only to withdraw that a couple of days later just before FIFA's ultimatum was about to expire.

a) Only a couple of days ago, your president, without thinking of the potential image issues, rushed to BAN, not penalize, but BAN the NFA, only to withdraw that a couple of days later just before FIFA's ultimatum was about to expire.
b) Just because the ban was lifted, NFA officials quickly removed top officials supposedly to appease the president
c) Now, EFCC raids the NFA office
Sorry, these top officials were removed before he lifted the ban, and part of the conditions for lifting the ban include the probe.

Kobojunkie:
Questions for you
a) Why didn't these raids happen BEFORE world cup? I mean most of that money most have been spent before the guys went down to South Africa
b) Why is this raid coming about the President's bungling act?
c) Did NFA suddenly go corrupt overnight or something?
i dont hold brief for Jonathan, but the probe has to come at one time or the other

And which foolish leader will call for a probe just before a major tournament? huh

Imagine he had carried out the probe before the world cup, it would have been used as an excuse for the poor outing.

I lived most of my life in Nigeria and have been/stayed in most of the regions in Nigeria, Yes tribalism exists but not as bad as its being portrayed on NL.

Sometimes i wonder if NLders talk about different ethnic groups other than the ones I know.

If I had not known my Igbo friends very well, I would have found it difficult having a drink in their houses after reading all the hatred being displayed here.
