Lagos, Police Sue for Calm as False SMS Spreads Panic A text message, which claimed that a portion of the Third Mainland Bridge was about to collapse, caused panic in Lagos yesterday as those who received the message made frantic calls to loved ones to avoid the ever busy bridge. The Lagos State Government and the state command of the Nigeria Police, however, reacted immediately, issuing separate statements to debunk the claim and urging Lagosians to be calm.An anonymous text message had surfaced around mid-day alerting recipients to a breakdown in the middle of the bridge. Addressed to “whom it may concern”, the message claimed that, “The middle part of the Third Mainland Bridge just had a sharp crack and is about to collapse!!! Drivers Beware!! Send it to your loved ones ASAP! Channels TV is currently showing live updates on this unfortunate occurrence.” The message sent the state into a frenzy as recipients called loved ones and motorists started avoiding the bridge. This forced the police and officials of the state government to carry out urgent on-the-spot inspections to ascertain the condition of the bridge. After the inspections, the officials issued separate statements affirming that there was no problem at all. Channels Television also refuted claims that it showed live feeds of the alleged breakdown. Police Public Relations Officer Frank Mba said the text message was a fraud, explaining that the prank was “highly disturbing.” He rued a situation where people deliberately spread panic by using GSMs to circulate false messages. Mba, a Superintendent of Police, said: "Our attention has been drawn to the an emerging but highly disturbing trend, whereby some unknown persons use modern communication devices such as GSM voice calls and text messages amongst others to circulate messages presumably alerting members of the public of on-going crimes (usually the violent ones) within specific locations in Lagos. “The message or broadcast usually ends with a warning to residents and their loved ones to keep off the specified area where the alleged crime is said to be taking place.” He said the dangers of allowing this dangerous trend to continue unchecked are unquantifiable. Mba also condemned the action of those behind the text message scare saying, “Human and material resources that ought to have been deployed by the police in tackling other problems are usually momentarily deployed in responding to these pseudo distress calls”. Also reacting to the text message scare, the Lagos State Government assured motorists and road users plying the Third Mainland Bridge that the bridge is safe. The state government urged Lagosians to disregard the false text message. In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Work and Infrastructure, Engineer Ganiyu Johnson, and his counterpart in Transportation, Hon. Kayode Opeifa, the government said there “is nothing wrong with the Third Mainland Bridge.” The statement urged Lagos residents to go about their normal duties, with words of assurance that there is no cause for alarm. The state government said it had contacted the Federal Controller of Works in the state, Engineer E.U. Mgbemena, who had also guaranteed the safety of the bridge. THISDAY that learnt that the trend had started since the weekend when a false text message was also sent round http://www.thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=179948 |

The facts on this thread are not contestable by both parties. The interpretation and judgement of these facts is left for each individual. I now understand why many call SLA a traitor. For me he is a gladiator quite well, only that he took his ambition too far and if i may say, his actions were more selfish and not much in line with the aspirations of the majority of Yorubas. Sorry dayo, I do not buy those achievement you listed as being substantial, rather I see them as SLA and his cohorts personal gains. I think Awo is the one guilty of Long throat here. Eating your cake and having it. Leaving your position as premier to contest Federal, Losing it and expecting to come back to be PremierBut Dayo, the fact available does not suggest this. Awo did not come back to be premier. When Akintola was removed, it was Adegbenro that was elected not Awo. The only fault of Awo was that he was overbearing, and SLA want some independence. but then Awo was still the Party leader. Just too bad it was personal egos that led to all these problems and unfortunately it was the Yoruba people that suffered the most. IMO |
tpiah:Naaa. i see the display each time I go home and I am from Lagos. |
@Beaf Prior to the Portuguese name of Lagos being adopted, Lagos was originally called Eko, which stems from either Oko (Yoruba: "cassava farm"I have heard this story mixed up severally. The fact is some men (few in numbers) on expedition came from Benin, who married and settled among the Yorubas, speak their language and follow their culture, died and some buried in Yorubaland. So many tribes got mixed up with other tribes at one time or the other, that does not make the minority that got mixed with the majority the dominant. Yorubas were in lagos before the expedition from Benin arrived. They were few and in minority, else Benin language would have been dominant instead of Yoruba Language. Trust me their is nothing Benin left in Lagos save the blood connection we shared. I am from Lagos, a descent of Kosoko royal line, my family is spread across epetedo in isale Eko and Epe town and I am a Yoruba- Period! |
chyz:I laugh in Tokyo ![]() A visit to Lagos will convince you, trust me its buy-one-get-one free. (no hating) |

a ridiculous idea. |
IbrahimB:hahaha lol. But Obasanjo visited Mr Biggs joint at Abuja with the Liberian president, saw the video then. ![]() |
For me i appreciate the light shown by both Dayokanu and Katsumoto. These men (Awo and Akintola) both have their virtues and weaknesses. But overall I think Awo is more revere because his leadership, policies and style benefited the Yorubas more. Somehow, joining mainstream politics have not achieved much progress for us in the west, present PDP control states in the west are good examples. More reason why I support/advocate for true federalism may be on the region line or state line. |
^^The reason i said those were in response to your claim that 'As long as it collects money from the center, it is reliant on other states; therefore, it should be merged with surrounding states to make economic sense' My point is that Lagos is giving more than it's receiving. And in event of 'every one to his tent' or resource control, Lagos will not be a weeping state, rather it will be better for it. Yes, i agree with you the answer is true federalism, not more new states. |
Beaf:like i can as well claim the oil wells in your region belong to the FG. |
Beaf:Beaf have you compared how much goes into the federal account from Lagos with what comes to Lagos from the federal? Do you know how much VAT and other taxes including the ports charges that go to federal from Lagos? |
dayokanu:But Awolowo was still the leader of the party now. Are Ona Kakanfo do take oders from his Leader - the alaafin. |
Thank you |
matoyeh:This is likely to continue for the rest of your life if you continue the relationship, cos i doubt you will ever be able to satisfy all her desires/responsibilities. So think! |
Wrong section. this should be on nairaland section not family section. |
but if you ask me, I actually think appointees shouldn't be automatic delegates, it is not fair but the question is, why now in the middle of the game? |
^^^Nobody is exonerating any Pastor, we are simply saying the OP story does not add up, whether the accused rapist is a pastor or someone else chaircover: |
I hate having to open this thread, but your 'report to moderator' seems not to be getting any attention. The last few pages of this thread https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-467117.160.html#msg6441391 need your attention. Pls act. thanks. |
^^^ I dont believe the rape story a bit. This is one of the most ridiculous rape story I have ever read there is one Pastor she know well when he was still preaching in there area, one day the pastor called her that he will come and visit her around 10pm so she agree, she stay alone in a room apartment she rented outside school, she is already sleeping before the pastor came, they gist together the pastor plead with her to stay overnight she agreed, she slept off, according to what she told me she said she wake up middle of the night and find the man on top of her she pushed the man away, the man plead with her, she taught nothing happen 'cos she is a virgin and she didn't see any blood then and her pant is still on(so innocent i think), thats how she got the pregnant.I think the OP is 'the pastor', they did whatever they wanted, pregnancy came, they hid it cos of the shame and now they are looking for some people to keep the twins till they probably get married, get a job and possibly relocate from the area. Reminds me of these 2 church brother and sister who lay on each other naked without he penetrating, she later got pregnant and was wondering how possible. |
