These were gods who dwelt among humans. They are the perfect example of what it means to be created in the image of God. They thought like God and acted like him to make life for other humans interesting and worth leaving.

Even their bones should be rotten by now, but their names have been immortalized to live on. As long as the world still exists, all generation of humans must come across these gods.

They lived for a while but carved their names on the rocks of time never to be erased by any form of climate condition.

Foreign Affairs › Huge Weapons Haul Seized By Spanish Police-bbc by obafemee80(op):
Spanish Police have released striking pictures of a huge weapons haul seized from an organised crime group.
It includes over 10,000 assault rifles, machine guns, pistols, revolvers, and 400 shells and grenades.
The guns and ammunition were seized in January during an operation against firearms trafficking.
Investigators also found an illegal workshop with machinery to manipulate and reactivate weapons, near Bilbao. Five people were arrested.
Cash amounting to 80,000 euros (£70,000 / $85,000) was seized.
The operation involved counter-terror police from Madrid, Bilbao, Valencia and Gerona.
Europol, which supported the investigation, said the firearms were sold in Spain, France and Belgium.
It said some of the weapons were deactivated, but did not comply with established standards.
Criminals acquired the arsenal largely through auctions and other legal channels before reactivating it.
The gang had been using a sports shop as a front for its distribution centre - which in reality sold firearms, weapon components and ammunition.
Police said the weapons would have had an easy journey onto the black market, and into the hands of terrorists or organised crime groups.
Europol said firearms traffickers exploit legal loopholes and legislative differences between EU countries to divert guns from legal suppliers.
Reactivating deactivated weapons is one of Europe's main sources of illegal guns.
The agency said it had seen a significant increase in the number being supplied to criminals since 2014.

Science/Technology › Why You Look Different In Photos Than You Do In The Mirror by obafemee80(op): 5:39pm On Mar 14, 2017
Yesterday morning, you looked good. Yesterday evening, before you went out, you're pretty sure you looked real good. So who the hell is this schlub in the Facebook album from last night, tagged with your name?

It's a phenomenon nestled somewhere between universal annoyance and urban legend: People see something different in the mirror than they do in photographs. More often than not, the former is controlled, predictable and palatable, while the latter is an endless source of nasty little surprises.

So, why the disparity? The answer is complicated, but it boils down to this: Your eyes, your brain, your mirror and your camera are all conspiring to sabotage your body image.

It's the camera

The camera adds ten pounds! At a certain point, this obscure TV adage became folk wisdom. While this particular effect probably refers specifically to television, and in particular the distorting effect of the convex curvature of older TV sets, it seems to hold true for regular folks, sometimes in still pictures as well as video.

Cameras sensors may be absorbing the same photons as our eyes, but they're doing so through a complex lens that can actually change the way you look. Most cameras, from the dumpiest point-and-shoots to high-end DSLRs, ship with lenses capable of adjusting to wide, zoom-ed out perspective, and tight, zoomed-in views. At both extremes, the lens plays weird—and potentially ugli-fying tricks.

A wide angle lens does as its name suggests, capturing an image spread over a wide angle. The field of view in a wide-angle shot is wide—wider than that of your own eyes. In pulling this off, some lenses create a sort of fisheye effect, which can bloat subjects in the middle, and stretch those on the outside. This, however, is instantly recognizable, and probably won't cause too much anxiety. In other words, If the shot looks like a still from an episode of Jackass, you probably shouldn't let it figure into your self-image too much.

But there's a subtler effect of wide lenses called wide-angle distortion: Since the field of view is super-wide, objects close to the camera will seem large, while objects just a bit further away will seem very small. Here's a scene from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels that illustrates the effect, starting a 4:18. (NSFW, sorta.)

Telephoto lenses are usually seen as more flattering, giving the impression that the subject is flattened, and slightly compressing the width of your foremost features, like your nose or breasts. So you might want to think twice before fleeing the pesky paparazzi and their fancy zoom lenses; it's the tourist with the pocket cam whose snaps will make you look fat on the Internet.

Lens distortion isn't the only way a camera can screw with your visage. Flash illuminates subjects harshly, turning elegant faces normally accented by soft shadows into a flat, shadowless, cadaveric horror shows.

Whether these effects are annoying or used to advantage, they mean that what you see in photos is different than what you see in the mirror.

It's the Mirror

I don't mean to imply that the camera is the only liar, here, because mirrors are just as guilty. For one, they flip your image. The You you're most familiar with, then, is actually an exact opposite of how you look to others. Granted, it's an intuitive reversal, so it doesn't bother us when we see it, but it implants a self-image that's intrinsically wrong.

On top of that, there's the problem of perspective. People stand close to mirrors, but see their whole selves. This provides a reasonable perspective, but a unique one: it's the perspective of a person standing near to you, eyes proportionately closer to your head than to your feet. This is the perspective of a partner in conversation, not a photographer. Looking a certain way from three feet away doesn't mean you'll look the same from 15.

It's you

The physics of lenses and mirrors offer solutions to specific problems, i.e. OH MY GOD SO THAT'S WHY MY WONDERFUL BUTT LOOKS SO FAT ON FILM! However, these explanations don't speak to a more relatable weirdness about photography. It's a feeling of uncanniness. It's a sense that something about the photographed self seems unquantifiably different than the mirrored self. It's in your head.

Think about the act of looking on a mirror. It's incredibly limited You pretty much need to be facing forward, or else you can't see. You will always be looking slightly down at the rest of your body. You will pose for yourself, to achieve the most flattering look. You will hide fat behind folds of clothes, or minimize a strange facial feature with a tilt of the head.

Other people, including photographers, don't see this version of you. They see a version that you are rarely privy to, and that can seem wildly foreign to our ingrained sensibilities. As Slate explains, it's a bit like how people hate their own voices on tape, doubly so because we know that those foreign, goofball intonations represent that way that everyone else hears us. In photos, we see ourselves in various states of motion, in different contortions and from uncaring, neutral perspectives. Lenses may distort, sure, but in a powerful way, these uncomfortable photographs are closer to reality than our carefully images in the mirror.

Islam › 9 Things You Didn’t Know About The Prophet’s Mosque by obafemee80(op): 12:08am On Mar 09, 2017
Seeing a scene of impeccable beauty, we often hear the term “Heaven on Earth!” But there is only one place that literally has the right to proclaim itself heaven on Earth. There, deep in the mosque of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam), covered by green carpets and the tears of millions, lies a “garden from the gardens of paradise.” It is a place known to every Muslim who has ever lived, yet there's still much we don't know about it. Here are just some of the interesting facts and mysteries of the Prophet's [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam]

9. The first place in the Arabian Peninsula to have electricity

When the Ottomans introduced electricity to the Arabian Peninsula, the first place to be lit up was the mosque of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam]. By some accounts, it would be a few more years before the Sultan himself had full electricity in his own palace in Istanbul.

8. The current mosque is larger than the old city

The current mosque is more than 100 times the size of the original building. This means that the current mosque covers almost the entire area of the old city itself. This is evident from the fact that whereas Jannat Al-Baqi cemetery was on the outskirts of the city during the time of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him)] , it now borders the precincts of the current mosque grounds.

7. There's an empty grave in the Prophet's [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] room

It has long been the stuff of legend that there is an “empty grave” next to where the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam], Abu Bakr [raḍyAllāhu 'anhu] and Umar [raḍyAllāhu 'anhu] are buried. This was confirmed, however, when the individuals who went in to change the coverings in the hujrah in the 1970s noted the presence of an empty space. Whether or not it is meant for Isa ['alayhi'l-salām] when he returns is a matter of debate.

6. It was destroyed by fire

The majority of the old mosque, including the original mimbar of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam], was destroyed in a fire that swept through the mosque centuries after the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] died. The fire was so extensive that the roof and even some of the walls of the room of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] collapsed, revealing his resting place for the first time in 600 years.

5. There was no dome before, now there are two!

For more than 650 years after the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] passed away, there was no dome over his [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] grave. The first one was built in 1279 by a Mamluk sultan and was made of wood. The green dome that we see today is actually the outer dome over the room of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam]. There is an inner dome that is much smaller and has the name of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam], Abu Bakr [raḍyAllāhu 'anhu] and Umar [raḍyAllāhu 'anhu] inscribed on the inside.

4. The dome used to be purple!

Yup – purple. It turns out that the dome has been through various colors and renovations before it reached its current form and colour about 150 years ago. At one point it used to be white and for the longest period it was a purple-blue colour that the Arabs of Hijaz were particularly fond of.

3. It has 3 mihrabs

Most mosques only have one mihrab, but the Prophet's [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] mosque has three. The current mihrab is the one used nowadays for the imām to lead prayers. The next mihrab is set back and is called the Suleymaniye or Ahnaf mihrab. It was made on the orders of the Sultan Suleyman the magnificent for the Hanafi imām to lead prayers whilst the Maliki imām lead prayers from the Prophetic mihrab. The Prophetic mihrab completely covers the area that the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] used to lead prayers from except where he placed his feet.

2. What lies in the room of Fatima [raḍyAllāhu 'anha]?

Items belonging to the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] were housed in his room or the room of Fatima [raḍyAllāhu 'anha] which was incorporated into his room after a major expansion. When Madīnahwas under siege during World War I, the Ottoman commander had many priceless artifacts evacuated to Istanbul, hidden in the clothes of women and children. They can now be seen in the Topkapi Palace. However, intriguingly, some items still remain but are undocumented.

1. It is FULL of secret signs

Yes, the mosque of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] is covered with so many subtle signs and secrets that it makes the DaVinci Code look like a cheap puzzle for pre-schoolers. Each pillar, each dome, each window carries a story and indicates the location of events that carry historical and spiritual significance. The people who constructed the Prophet's Mosque realized that it would be impossible to put up signs everywhere as it would distract from the main purpose of prayers. Therefore, they came up with an ingenious way of indicating a location of importance through minor changes in the design of surrounding objects. What are the secrets? Well, that is a story for another day inshā'Allāh.

The mosque of the Prophet [ṣallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam] was never just a mosque. It was the center of the first Islamic community and nation. It was the scene of our greatest triumphs and tragedies. It was a community center, homeless refuge, university and mosque all rolled into one.

Like the Muslim community, it has grown over the years and become more modern with each passing generation. But despite the exponential growth and changes from the simple Hijazi date palm trunk interior to the marble and gold clad structure we have today – the inner core remains the same. Perhaps there's a lesson in there for us all.

Car Talk › World's Most Expensive SUV: $500,000 Mercedes Maybach by obafemee80(op): 3:21pm On Mar 07, 2017

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7uGiiHsVr0

Mercedes-Benz has combined luxury with off-roading for the ultimate SUV.
The German carmaker has unveiled a new Maybach with a retractable roof and a V12 engine, along with high-tech amenities such as thermal cup holders and folding tables stashed in the middle console.

Called Mercedes-Maybach G-Class 650, the firm unveiled the vehicle at the Geneva auto show and it has been deemed 'the world's most expensive SUV' with a price tag of $500,000 - and only 99 will be built.
In 2015, we took the logical step of opening a new chapter in the luxury class with our Mercedes Maybach sub-brand,' said Dr Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars.

'Since then, over 15,000 Mercedes-Maybachs have been produced. Hence, one in every ten vehicles sold in the S Class segment was a Mercedes-Maybach'.

'With the Mercedes-Maybach G Class Landaulet, we are now extending the Mercedes-Maybach portfolio to include the world's most iconic and prestigious off-roader.'

The $500,000 SUV is Dailmer AG's latest newcomer of its luxurious line, Maybach Marque, which was first released to meet the demand of higher-end models, reported Bloomberg Pursuits.

It boasts a V12 engine and a landaulet style – there is also a fabric roof that can be transformed into a convertible top.

The vehicle stretches 17 feet long (5,345 millimeters), has a wheelbase of 11 feet (3,428 millimeters) and stands about seven feet tall (2,235 millimeters).

Although the Maybach seats four passengers comfortably, those sitting in the back receive the best treatment – they have access to the retractable roof.

Riders simply press a button and the large folding top opens electrically to offer a view of the blue sky.
There is also a feature that electrically operates glass partition separates the rear compartment from the driver's section.

And the glass can be changed from transparent to opaque at the press of a button.

There is also a large business console that houses folding tables and thermal cup holders between the seats.
The vehicle includes control for the rear air conditioning and two 25.4 cm (10 inch) high-resolution media displays.

'This car meets the highest demands for luxury and yet still has all the elements that make the G-Class a real off-roader,' Gunner Guethenke, who heads Mercedes's SUV business, told Bloomberg.

Although the inside is built for luxury, the outside is designed to take on any terrain.

'The portal axles provide ample ground clearance of 450 millimeters, allowing the open-top all-terrain vehicle to overcome even extreme obstacles in masterly fashion,' explained Mercedes.

'In contrast to a conventional rigid axle, the wheels are not at the height of the axle center, but are instead situated much further down on the axle heads owing to the portal transmission.'

'Electrically extending entry aids make for easier access to the vehicle.'

And the vehicle is positioned almost half a meter (1.6 feet) above the ground to tackle the toughest terrain.

The Mercedes-Maybach G-Class 650 also features the same 100 percent differential locks as the rest of the vehicles in its family, which can be engaged while the vehicle is in motion.
The combination of this 4WD technology, unique in the off-road segment, makes the G 650 Landaulet stand out from all other 4x4 vehicles,' shared Mercedes.

'High drive comfort comes courtesy of the most powerful available engine, the Mercedes-AMG V12 biturbo, which delivers a maximum output of 463 kW (630 hp) with a peak torque of 1000 Newton-meters.'

The German carmaker plans to release the vehicle to the public after September.
The G-Class has been around since 1979 and the name Maybach dates back to the beginnings of the automobile.

'It stands for supreme luxury with tradition, combined with high-tech. And the story lives on,' said Dr Thiemer.

'The fifth model after the S-Class Saloon, Pullman and Cabriolet as well as the Mercedes-Maybach Vision 6 show car, underlines the importance of the Mercedes-Maybach sub-brand for the Mercedes brand family.'
