Kennydoc: The point in bold is the important part of the whole thing.
That's why I said you didn't understand the constituitional provision you were quoting. The constitution never talks about the number of states in which the candidates gets the highest number of votes.
It only says that the person to be declared winner must get the total highest number of votes, and at the same time get 25% of the votes cast in ⅔ (or 24 states) of the federation. So even if Jonathan was the one who won in 21 states, but Buhari polled more votes than him, Buhari would have still won the election.
I'm done with this explanation. If you still don't get it, I'm sorry but I can't help you anymore. Duh, If Buhari had pulled more votes in just 5 states than GEJ winnig votes in other 31 states, will Buhari be declared winner? NO You even contradicted yourself, by quoting the bold comments, which clearly states That Buhari got more than one quarter of the votes in 27 states. Which is a constitution requirement.
I don't like people who argue blindly . |
Politics › Re: Who Can Defeat Buhari In 2019? by OBAGADAFFI: 10:57pm On May 22, 2016 |
Kennydoc: You seemingly don't even understand what you are quoting. The requirement is that the winner must get a minimum of 25% of the votes cast in ⅔ of the states in Nigeria plus the FCT, while also having the highest total number of votes (simple majority). Since there are 36 states in Nigeria, ⅔ of 36 is 24, so the winner must get at least 25% of the votes cast in each of 24 states including the FCT, and then he must have the highest total number of votes.
Jonathan got a minimum of 25% of the votes cast in each of 25 states and FCT. The only states in which he couldn't make 25% votes were: Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger, Jigawa, Sokoto, Yobe, and Zamfara. That's 11 states in all.
Buhari on the other hand didn't get 25% of the votes cast only in the following states: Abia, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Imo, and Rivers. That's 10 states in all, meaning that he made the 25% in 26 states plus the FCT.
I don't know where you got the 25 states for Buhari and 19 for Jonathan from. The APC candidate got the highest number of votes in 21 states while Mr. Jonathan prevailed in 15 states and Abuja. Mr. Buhari has also met the constitutional requirement to be declared President-elect by getting more than one quarter of the votes in 27 states. The APC candidate won in Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara. Mr. Jonathan on the other hand prevailed in Rivers, Plateau, Taraba, Nasarawa, Imo, Enugu, Ekiti, Edo, Delta, Ebonyi, Cross River, Bayelsa, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Abia and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). The Independent National Electoral Commission is yet to announce Mr. Buhari’s victory because the commission is still expecting results of the presidential election from Borno. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/180374-buhari-in-historic-election-win-emerges-nigerias-president-elect.html |

The world has gone past the era where hitting someone was generally accepted as a corrective approach. If you can't correct a person, especially an adult, without resorting to violence then don't meddle in their affairs. As I am now, hitting me just coz one is my senior may not go unrequited. Every family even in the West got some forms of corrective measures. But I am yet to see any family tolerating any form of retaliation or attack from a younger brother to an elder. This dude will regret his actions for a long time, especially now that the sister don't want to have any business with him anymore. Trust me you don't want to be in this kind of mess with your sister and not when she an adult . And brother can always overlook ride on. |

Kennydoc: 25% in ⅔ of the states is not the same as a win in ⅔ of the states. For example, Buhari lost in Ekiti state, but was still able to get 40% of the votes cast in the state. Hope you are aware that Jonathan also got 25% votes in all SW states. The SW could have still voted for GEJ and yet Buhari would get his 25% in ⅔ states intact.
Kai, you're not saying the truth. Both Buhari and Jonathan got 25% votes in ⅔ of the states + FCT (which is at least 24 states). Buhari won Jonathan only on simple majority. 25% in each of 2/3 States + Majority is the constitutional requirements. It's simple get 25% or more in each of the 2/3 States you become the winner. Buhari got the highest votes more the 25% in 21 states GEJ got the highest votes more the 25% in 19 states including Abuja. |

Did she, as an elder sister, hit him first and assume he won't retaliate out of respect for an elderly sibling? Has she in time past, pummelled him before without him retaliating and got a shocker this time after hitting him again? While I condemn the use of brute force or physical harm to anyone regardless of their sex, I won't fault the bro until his side of the story is heared. Politics › Re: Who Can Defeat Buhari In 2019? by OBAGADAFFI: 8:34pm On May 22, 2016 |
Kennydoc: Please take note of these facts:
Buhari won the last election with only 2.7 million votes.
Jonathan lost a lot of votes from the SE (in 2015 relative to 2011) because of low voters' registration, and poor voters' turn out on election day. I'm not saying he would have won if the turn out in the SE was maximal. Also, hope you remember that it took Ọhaneze a lot of time to adopt Jonathan. They agreed he failed Igbos, but only adopted him finally because Buhari was a worse option for Igbos.
Four of the North Central states voted for Buhari in 2015, compared to 2011 when they all voted for Jonathan. Buhari won with a greater margin in the NC than in the SW because his margin of win in the SW which was approximately 612k is less than the 678k with which he won in only Niger and Kwara combined.
Finally, South west only gave Buhari about 57% of their votes (2.4 million votes) while Jonathan had 43% (1.8 million). The total SW votes for Buhari is just a little more than the votes Kano alone gave him. I pointed this out for you and others to stop bragging how SW will always determine the swing of election results. Even if you guys had given Jonathan an additional 1 million vote, altogether making it 2.8 million votes (ie 67% of your total votes), Buhari would have still won. It's to let you know how not-too-significant the SW contribution to Buhari's victory was. 25% in each of 2/3 States + Majority is required by the constitution . Buhari got 21 states GEJ got 15 states If the Six SW states had voted GEJ the story will be different today. |
Politics › Re: Who Can Defeat Buhari In 2019? by OBAGADAFFI: 8:09pm On May 22, 2016 |
If you want to win election in Nigeria, go for the SW and NC. SW and NC are the only swing vote regions in Nigeria.
SW and NC did it for GEJ first term and also Buhari.
But SE, NE,NW,SA will always produce Block votes.
That Block vote failed SE and SS during the last election. |

PelicanPrince: I think the husband in question will be charged simply for manslaughter, maybe a three months jail sentence and det free. My readons are simple, this incident happened in Nigeria, and our constitution accomodates correcting (spanking) ones wife provided it doesnt cause grievous harm to tje wife. Now, he claims he only slapped his wife and to me thats correcting his wife according the law hed allowed to do so. Secondly the autopsy state clearly that him slapping (correcting) his wife did not cause grievous harm (death) but an edema in her head. The cause of a brain edema could be head trauma , low blood sodium (hyponatremia), high altitude, brain tumors , or an obstruction to fluid drainage (hydrocephalus). Headaches, confusion, and unconsciousness or coma can be symptoms of cereral edema. I think what happened in this case is when she got caught, the wife surely mustve been stressed up, also not forgetting her eventful weekend which she wouldnt have gotten over yet, with everything mixing up in her head and the slapps from the husband and all the confusion around her must have overwhelmed her and eventually led to her death. A simple example is the headaches we all have when we are stressed, its caused by some form of pressure in the brain. To answer the square question why he went into hiding initiay, I think it was fear but when he learnt about:
Section 55(1)(d). Correction of Child, Pupil, Servant or Wife. (b) by a schoolmaster for the purpose of correcting a child . . . (c) by a master for the purpose of correcting his servant or apprentice . . . (d) by a husband for the purpose of correcting his wife , s uch husband and wife being subject to any native law or custom in which such correction is recognized as lawful. OrlandoOwoh: For me, all the parts of the country should have their power plants powered by a source of energy in their respective localities. In the South East, power should be generated by coal, which is in abundance in Enugu. In the South South, it should be generated by gas. In the South West, it should be generated by hydro or sun. In the north it should be generated by hydro, wind and/or solar.
It doesn't make sense for there to be a total black out in the country because the water in dams is low or because gas pipelines have been blown up. Correct, power plants should be sited close to the source of energy nation wide. Every state got a reliable source of energy |

But Nigeria today don't have the money to diversify its energy. We don't have what it takes to maintain these solar powers and windmills.
