CrimeOsun Speaker’s Wife’s Kidnappers Jailed 27 Years Each by obitwo(op): 6:27pm On Oct 21, 2013
An Osun State High Court sitting in Iwo has sentenced five men who kidnapped the wife of the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaja Muibat Salaam, to 27 years in prison.

Justice Moshood Adeigbe while delivering the judgment held that the prosecutors had been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the kidnappers met and conspired before they kidnapped their victim.

The five persons convicted by the court are: Chukwudi Okereke (40); Ogbole Ochijile Elijah (25); Lucky Okonkwo (33); Kaikine Mahah (35); and Philip Nwadinnor (30).

The judge ruled that each of the five convicts would spend seven years in prison for the charge of conspiracy; he sentenced them to 10 years imprisonment for the count of kidnapping; and 10 years for the charge of unlawful possession of firearms. He ruled that the jail terms would run concurrently since the charges arose from the same crime.

The Speaker’s wife was kidnapped in Ejigbo, Osun State on October 9, 2012 by men armed with guns while she was returning home from work.

The judge said, “The confessional statements were clear that the accused persons met at Royal Hotel in Agbor, Delta State where they planned the kidnap, perfected it in Lagos and carried it out in Ejigbo.

“The exhibits also showed that the five accused persons kidnapped the PW2 (Mrs. Salaam), forced her into a trailer and dragged her into the bush on their way to Lagos before men of the Ogun State Police Command arrested them. I hold that the prosecution have established their case and therefore found the five accused persons guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping and unlawful possession of firearms.”

The prosecution team led by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adewale Afolabi, told the court that the convicts had confessed to the kidnapping in the confessional statements each of them gave to the police during investigation.

However, the defence counsel, Messrs. Sam George and Fredrick Komolafe had urged the judge to temper justice with mercy because the accused persons were married men with children.

But Justice Adeigbe ruled that the kidnappers deserved the full punishment of the law because kidnapping was a heartless and condemnable offence.

The defence counsel vowed to appeal the judgment, saying the confessional statements were not tested. They said that the best thing was to have ordered a trial within trial to be able to authenticate the statements.

PoliticsJonathan Commissions N235.5b Steel Factory by obitwo(op): 3:10pm On Oct 17, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that no nation can industrialise without a vibrant iron and steel sector.

He also assured that his government was determined to provide the necessary incentives and support for the growth of the private sector.

He said this on Thursday while commissioning the N235.5 billion WEMPCO Steel Mill Company Limited’s state–of-the-art 5-Stand tandem cold rolled steel plant in Ibafo, Ogun State.

He noted that the steel sector is the heart of any economic development endeavour and that the commissioning marks yet another milestone in the determination of his government to reposition the  steel  sector to play a  pivotal role in the nation’s march towards industrialisation.

He congratulated WEMPCO Group “for this high and productive investment.”

“By constructing this 700,000 metric tonnes per annum cold rolled steel mill here in Ibafon, Ogun State, to compliment your existing investments in the country, WEMPCO has demonstrated strong belief and confidence in our economy,” the President stated.

He added that steel is one of the most important materials used widely for both domestic and industrial purposes throughout the world and that a vibrant steel sector contributes to GDP growth, facilitates exploitation of natural resources and generates economic activities in downstream industries.

The President, who said he was aware of the challenges being faced by investors in the country, added that “government is committed to improving our investment climate by providing and upgrading necessary infrastructure such as power, roads and rail.

“Our aim is to keep attracting foreign and local direct investment into key sectors of the economy that will create jobs, stimulate private sector growth, continuous technology transfer, and ultimately economic growth and wealth for Nigerians and Nigeria.”

Managing Director of the company, Lewis Tung, in his address, requested that the company be given the opportunity to take over two of Nigeria’s moribund steel companies, Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Mills and Delta Steel.

Responding, Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Musa Mohammed Sada, said the Federal Government will be glad to grant the company the request if it is in its power, but noted that there are issues that will not make that possible for now.

“We have the encumbrance of having a legal issue attached to Ajaokuta Steel Rolling Mills and we are trying to sort it out. We will be glad to receive the proposal from them.”

Minister of Industries, Trade and Investment, Olusegun Aganga, said “industries like this will drive the growth and development of this country” emphasising that the country needs to move from the current status of selling mineral resources and products to that of an industrialised nation.

Charles Ugwu
A businessman, Charles Ugwu, has been killed in the Ajegunle area of Lagos, over his refusal to settle some street urchins, popularly known as area boys.

The incident was said to have occurred at Uzor Street, Ajegunle, on September 24 2013. A tyre dealer, Ugwu was said to have been accosted by two area boys, identified as Saturday and Chimezie, while offloading goods from a vehicle to his shop.

The deceased’s wife, Stella, who claimed to have witnessed the incident, told PUNCH Metro that her husband had resisted the thugs’ efforts to extort money from him resulting in the assault on her husband.

She said, “Around 9pm on that day, two young men, known as Saturday and Chimezie, accosted us saying they would not allow us to continue working until we settle them.

“We asked them why we should pay them because the goods had nothing to do with the hoodlums. Saturday was “annoyed; he walked away only to return with stones, which he threw at us. When my husband cautioned him to stop causing trouble, Saturday picked up a “stick and struck Ugwu on the neck.”

Ugwu was said to have fallen to the ground while all efforts to revive him failed.

PUNCH Metro learnt that immediately after Ugwu was killed, the Divisional Police Officer of Ajegunle Police Station, Mr. Abayomi Agbana, was contacted. Agbana was said to have dispatched policemen to the area and the two suspects were arrested.

The bereaved wife lamented the hardship that had been brought on the family due to her husband’s death.

She said, “Who will train my children for me? Ugwu  was a good father and husband; he was much too young to die. We loved each other so much. How can my three children be fatherless at these ages? Our first is just 15 years old. The second is 12 years and the last child is nine. These hoodlums have wiped out the joy of my life.”

In his statement at the police station, Saturday claimed that he actually demanded money from the businessman but had nothing to do with his death.

He said while demanding money from Ugwu, Stella told her husband not to part with any money.

Saturday claimed that at that instant, Stella held his singlet. He alleged that Chimezie and the deceased were trying to appeal to Stella to let go of the suspect when the businessman suddenly collapsed.

He insisted that neither him nor his accomplice had fought Ugwu.

Chimezie was also said to have alleged, in his statement, that he was trying to appeal to Stella when her husband suddenly collapsed. He claimed that no form of violence had been used on the deceased.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos, for further investigation.

The victim’s younger brother, Francis, said the family was ready to bury the corpse but police had yet to release the body.

He said, “The police have insisted that the autopsy report must be done before the body would be released.”

Detectives at the SCID have however blamed the ongoing doctors’ strike for the delay.

A detective, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity on Tuesday, said, “Many bereaved families have been complaining since the doctors strike started. This is because they want to bury their loved ones but cannot take away their corpses because autopsy reports have not been done. The situation is worrisome and embarrassing in some cases.”

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back when contacted for information on the case. She had yet to do so as of 8pm.

Another 'businessman' using the sale of jewellery as a smokescreen to cover his criminal acts
PoliticsNDLEA Intercepts N82m Cocaine In Kitchen Utensils by obitwo(op):
A Lagos-based businessman, Asogwa Ochiabuto, has been arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for smuggling 7.45kg of cocaine hidden in flasks and kitchen utensils into the country.

In a statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, on Tuesday, the discovery was made during the inward screening of passengers onboard an Ethiopian Airline flight from Brazil.

The agency added that the drug, which was industrially concealed inside food flasks and kitchen utensils, tested positive for cocaine and weighed 7.45kg.

It is estimated to have a value of N82m, the single largest seizure recorded at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, since January.

NDLEA Abuja Airport Commander, Mr. Hamisu Lawan, said the arrest was made following intensive screening by narcotic officers.

He said, “The suspect, Ochiabuto, was onboard an Ethiopian Airline flight from Brazil enroute Lome, Addis Ababa to Abuja. The cocaine, though carefully hidden in the flasks, was detected during a search operation. We have commenced investigation into the case and he will soon be charged to court.”

Ochiabuto, 39, who resides in the Okota area of Lagos, hails from Umabor town in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

He said, “I am a secondary school certificate holder. I could not further my education due to lack of sponsorship. I sell jewellery in Lagos to earn a living. I was married but now divorced. My intention was to invest the money from the drug trade in my business because I have suffered several losses that made me heavily indebted.”

Chairman of the NDLEA, Alhaji Ahmadu Giade, expressed satisfaction with the arrest and drug seizure, attributing it to the Operation End-of-Year Screening inaugurated by the agency.

He said, “As the year draws to an end, we have begun the Operation End-of-Year Screening. This is targeted at preventing drug cartels from carrying out their criminal acts this season. Drug barons daily devise new drug trafficking tricks and the NDLEA will remain extra vigilant to stop them.”

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Pascal Amaechi, who is said to be specialised in robbing passengers along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while the operatives of the command on the trial of his accomplice, simply named Monday.
The state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Ilobanafor, said both men disguised to commit the crime.
Ilobanafor said, “The two armed robbers, who disguised as passengers, boarded an Ibadan bound 18-seat passenger bus from Sango-Otta with the intention to rob travellers of their belongings during the journey.

“At a secluded area just after the RCC work station along the expressway, the robbers showed their true colours as the threatened to kill those onboard if the driver did not stop.
In the process, a passenger, named Olumuyiwa Idowu, was stabbed in the chest with a knife and robbed of his phone, bag and unspecified amount of money by the attackers. Another passenger, Tunde Babalola, was also robbed of his belongings.”
The bandits were said to have fled the scene of the robbery but one of them was soon caught after the passengers reported the incident to some policemen at the Ibadan end of the expressway.

“With the help of vigilance group members in the community, one of them, Amaechi, was caught while he was also identified by a passenger as one of the two that robbed the vehicle. During questioning, Amaechi named an accomplice, Monday, while confessing to the crime,” the PPRO said

A nursing mother, Chigozie Osinachi, and her four-month-old baby are currently being detained at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, of the Lagos State Police Command.

Chigozie, is said to be the wife of a kidnap kingpin, Jonah Osinachi, aka China, who reportedly masterminded the kidnap of the chairman, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Kehinde Bamigbetan, early this year.

PUNCH Metro had reported that China and seven others were killed by SARS operatives during a rescue operation by the team.

Chigozie was said to have been arrested at her home in Ajah area of the state after policemen alleged that they had found evidence that she was also involved in the activities of the gang.

Four months after the initial arrest, however, Chigozie and her baby are still being held at SARS.

A friend of the suspect, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that the woman had repeatedly told the police that she knew nothing about her late husband’s criminal activities, but the police had still insisted on detaining her.

He said, “Chigoze had told the police that she was in Ghana, managing her husband’s hotel, when China suddenly called her to come down to Nigeria with the kids, that they would be travelling out.

“She was at their home at Ajah, waiting for him, when some SARS policemen came to arrest her.

“Her father and four-year-old daughter were also arrested but her fath was later released. Strangely enough, they have refused to release Chigozie and her baby.

“Chigozie has taken to crying every day, begging the police to charge her to court. She is also worried about her other children whom she has not seen.”

Lagos State Deputy Police spokesman, Mr. Damasus Ozoani, said Chigozie was being detained due to ongoing investigations and because she had allegedly confessed to being in possession of three pistols, which are in her Ghana home.

He said, “Chigozie’s husband is the notorious China, who masterminded the kidnap of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area boss, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, and a Federal High Court Judge.

“He was also responsible for many robberies which included the destruction of several ATMs. Right now, police have written to INTERPOL, so that they can go to Ghana and access her home and recover the guns. She will be charged to court after that.

“While police are waiting for INTERPOL to acknowledge their letter, Chigozie, her baby and sister-in-law will remain in detention.”

PoliticsOuk's Multibillion Dollar SLOK by obitwo(op): 9:34am On Oct 15, 2013
I just saw on Channel's Sunrise, a disgusting advert by OUK

The TVC starts with the ex governor talking proudly about a company he started in 1995 which has grown to become a multibillion dollar business

Its interesting that four years after he started his company, he became governor, and a few years after the unknown venture has become a multibillion dollar business

Its also funny that Abians have chosen to focus on Tinubu's Lagos with no evidence that he owns all they claim he owns while a former governor of their state, who served within the same period and impoverished their state further, has been severally eulogized by them. The is nothing that anyone can point to as a legacy he left behind in the state. No roads, nothing. At least Tinubu built a number of state and Federal roads and started the BRT bus service which is still functioning today. He also initiated the rail service which is nearing completion. Between Tinubu and Fashola, Lagos has become a gem and its IGR has grown from N600m in 1999 to almost N30bn per month (50 times more). In 1999, Abia's IGR was around N100m, today it is N650m monthly (6.5 times more). Whether you like it or not, the IGR of a state is a function of the economic activities in the state.

This man has a block of luxury flats in Ikoyi, Lagos which are uninhabited, on which he pays maintenance costs annually and gets nothing in return

I wonder how this man, who obviously has pocketed Abia's funds with nothing to show for it, now brandishes failed businesses as profitable to attract investment and fleece people of their hard earned monies. Where is Slok airlines, what has become of Sun newspapers. It is on record that anything he touches becomes a mess and this man must have invested billions of dollars of Abia's monies in businesses that fetch him very little. How come he is the one advertising his empire by himself in a TVC and not even a documentary? Who does that?

I wont be surprised if Theodore Orji, after his tenure starts a string of companies too after impoverishing the state and leaving no legacy behind
