It was 5 am and the temperature outside was about 5C. For a Nigerian more used to a warmer 30-32C, this freezing cold was near impossible to endure. But I was even colder inside the car that had picked us up from the airport than I thought it was possible to be. The reason? The words of our driver and impromptu guide, Charles:

“In South Africa,” he said, “be careful not to make a call on your cell-phone, especially if it’s a very good one, even if the window is wound up. If you stop at a traffic light, someone might smash the window and take it from you.”
I had just arrived in Johannesburg for a week-long stay for The Face of Africa finals and had planned to have as much fun as I could cram into that period. Now I was having second thoughts as two fellow journalists, Nonye, Emmanuel and I, were regaled with what I could only call Tales from the Twilight Zone.

Obasanjo clears way for Babangida
By Sola Odunfa
BBC Focus On Africa magazine

General Babangida
General Babangida helped secure Obasanjo's win in 1999
Since General Olusegun Obasanjo won Nigeria's presidential election in 1999, there has been speculation in political and media circles that a pact existed with his most important supporter, former ruler General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

The speculation is that in exchange for the support that he received from Babangida, the president would anoint him as his successor when he steps down at the end of his second term in 2007.

Obasanjo denied the existence of such a pact when he told journalists last year: "I don't know who will succeed me."

But any doubts about Obasanjo's commitment to Babangida have been removed by the perceived ruthlessness with which he has been cutting down his deputy, Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
EducationRe: Nigerian Educational System. by obong(m): 2:53pm On Aug 29, 2005
I dont understand why the state and local governments don't make more of thier own universities. We can't have only the feds and private peopl doing it. The more universities the more competition and the better quality. Nigeria needs about 1000 universities more
ComputersRe: 419 State of mind [caution, copyright] by obong(m): 2:51pm On Aug 29, 2005
why the focus on 419? I mean these guys are not gettin away with that much money, and when they do its because of the greed of the reciever of the email. i'd be more concerned if nigerians were hacking and stealing patented technology instead of this "low-hitech" game

CultureRe: Should We Promote Nigerian Languages More? by obong(m): 2:26pm On Aug 29, 2005
Hot-angell, before you say anything is impossible, look at what others are doing. China and India have the issue and are making it work. Switzerland, one of the post peaceful countries in the worl, has about 3 official langaues and 8 or so other languages.
PoliticsRe: Does Ethnicity Matter for Governorship? by obong(op): 2:23pm On Aug 29, 2005
Personally I see no problems with it. I think if we were to have different ethnicities governing in different states, it would be a sign of growth in our country. Thats one thing that was good about the military regime.

Unless we start viewing all of us as Nigerians, we'll continue to have the problems we have.
CultureRe: Should We Promote Nigerian Languages More? by obong(m): 8:27pm On Aug 28, 2005
Outside of an indentity issue (which I think is paramount) promoting out languages makes it easier for those that dont speak english or dont speak it well to be part of the world. If our nation invested in translating key documents into our languages, you'd find some an in the village capable of understanding what is happening in china or Romania, because the information would be written in his language.

The powerful countries in the world have all done that. South africa has , i believe, 9 official languages, and china supports all 55 languages in its country. They even pay to have newspapers translated into those langauges. India does the same thing and even awards yearly prizes to writers in local indian languages. Needless to say these countries have a deep indentity, making them more patriotic and which makes information easil accessible to the masses, even the old and poor.

PoliticsDoes Ethnicity Matter for Governorship? by obong(op): 4:33pm On Aug 28, 2005
Would anyone here vote for a Ibo man for governor of a traditionally Yoruba state, or Yoruba man for Rivers or Akwa Ibom state governor?

Why do you guys think [ethnicity] matters so much in a democratic government in Nigeria?
PoliticsRe: Who Should Be the Next President of Nigeria? by obong(m): 11:39pm On Aug 27, 2005
bjdon, dont give up on nigeria. every politician takes care of his people, but there are good ones that also take care of the citizens. im living in the US now where the [prez only cares about his people. im sure nigeria will get one that helps the entire nation. Duke is that man

ProgrammingRe: Nigerian Linux Distribution: do we need one? by obong(m): 4:55pm On Aug 25, 2005
chxta it is a nice idea to want to develop distros in Nigerian languages, but save Yoruba and to a little extent Igbo, how many Nigerians can actually read in their native tongues? That idea is at best utopian

One of the reasons more nigerian don't read thier langauges well is unavialbility of material. the more its around you, the more you'll read it. as long as you are literate in latin alphabeths and speak your language, you'll be able to read it as it comes along. we should strive to be bi-literate

i didnt even see igbo on the list of langaues they had. hausa, wolof, swahili were there. they are open to translating every langauge out there. they just need volunteers
CultureRe: Google in Yoruba by obong(m): 2:32pm On Aug 25, 2005
i wrote to the google people to see if they can add ibibio. If you want a certain langauge there, you should perhaps write to them as well.

The chinese langaues are quite different from each other, but they have a standad chinese that we know of (mandarin and cantonese). The chinese are a bunch of different ethnic groups as well that were unified a while ago
CultureRe: Google in Yoruba by obong(m): 2:27pm On Aug 25, 2005
why not all of them. The chinese have made sure all 55 of thier ethnic langaues survive next to thier mani chinese language. same with india
CultureRe: Google in Yoruba by obong(m): 2:19pm On Aug 25, 2005
IAH, you're right. pidgin is very sweet, reading and speaking. I dont know why anyone would think our langauges dont mix with technology. Now we need google in ibibio
PoliticsRe: China and Russia hooking up by obong(m): 2:09pm On Aug 25, 2005
China's army isnt just numbers. Numbers are the extra. China is soon to match and surpass the US in numbers of submarines. That will give its airforce serious muscles and open it opn to better nuclear deployment
PoliticsRe: Who Should Be the Next President of Nigeria? by obong(m): 2:07pm On Aug 25, 2005
Before we knock the Governors down, let us look at their performances as rated by their people. According to ThisDay Newspaper published May 28, 2005, Nigerians rated two Governors performances were Poor, one below average, 12 performed on the Average level, 12 were Above Average, eight were Above Average Plus, and only one was rated Good.

Donald Duke, Cross River, the only Governor rated Good is taking tourism to new heights with his Tinapa Project. The Tinapa Project seeks to put the state on the continent's chart on tourism. The state is one that has come to be reckoned with not for any other accomplishment but in its focus in developing its agricultural and tourism potentials, with the cultivation of Pine apples, and the environmental cleanliness of the state capital with the "Clean and Green" policy are plus to Duke's administration.

Eight Governors were rated Above Average Plus:
