Former military president, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.), has shifted the formal declaration ceremony of his intention to contest the 2015 presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The declaration, earlier scheduled for Wednesday, October 8, 2014, will now hold on Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at the Eagle Square, Abuja. Dr. Audu Ogbeh, coordinator of the event and former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who announced the postponement, said all earlier arrangements remain the same. Buhari postpones presidential declaration http:///XQlIW1H50w via @thecableng The PDPYF had earlier tweeted that the former head of state is likely to form a New party as insiders close to the retired General say he is no longer confident about the ability of the former lagos state governor to deliver the presidential ticket as earlier promised . But with the 2015 general election just by the corner such adventure might be costly and almost impossible |

No fewer than 66,402 applicants, which is more than six times the 10,000 mortgages expected to be financed under the pilot phase of the scheme, have applied for the home loans from the Nigeria Mortgage Refinancing Company (NMRC). The coordinating minister for the economy and minister of finance, Mrs Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who revealed this, yesterday, while giving an update on the outcome of the first batch of the federal government guaranteed mortgage facilities in Abuja, said 51 per cent of the 66,402 valid applicants have expressed interest in owning homes in Abuja while 18 per cent preferred Lagos. She said the applications, which spread across the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), revealed that 96 per cent of the applicants currently live in rented apartments and out of this figure, 63 per cent of applicants were male, 37 per cent female while 89 per cent applied for the homes individually and 11 per cent were joint applications (husband and wife). Stating that the selection process will be transparent, she said that all the 66,402 valid applications would be given to the 17 mortgage lenders and four commercial banks that are members of the NMRC lending banks to sort out the pre-qualification and invite applicants that meet the criteria for discussion between now and the next eight weeks. She said names of successful applicants would be made public through the media. Speaking at the occasion, the president, Mortgage Banking Association of Nigeria, Mr Femi Johnson, said his organisation was ready and prepared to support the process. He assured that the process would be further streamlined and more staff hired to ensure the process is completed within six weeks. The minister said that almost 60 per cent of the applicants were in the 31-40 age bracket, and 15 per cent 21-30, indicating that a healthy 75 per cent of young people were willing to buy homes and can easily have tenors of up to 20 years for their mortgages. A further analysis of the applications showed that most of the applicants prefer 3-bedroom flats/houses as 62.7 per cent of the applicants applied to acquire this property type. 32 per cent wanted 2-bedroom flats and a small percentage applied for 1 bedroom flats and 1 bedroom self-contained flats. According to her, 92 per cent of applicants were in stable employed positions while eight per cent were self-employed. http://leadership.ng/business/383830/fg-housing-scheme-66402-people-scramble-10000-mortgages |

It was Warren Buffett who posited that “Honesty was a very expensive gift, and advised that no one should expect it from cheap people” expecting it from the present crop of labour leaders was perhaps the greatest mistake Nigerian workers ever made. When The Nigerian Labour congress was formed in 1978, the objective was to protect, defend and promote the rights, well-being and the interests of all workers and pensioners. The multitudes who trooped into the Banking halls of Zenith and Guarantee Trust Bank to pay and apply for the NLC- Kriston Lally EPC Housing project ,did so because of the reputation the seal of NLC carried, but unknown to many the glory had departed! NLC previously seen as voice of the voiceless and defender of the oppressed have become a tool in the hands of those who seek to fleece the weak. One year after promising to deliver 5000 houses to subscribers in six months not even a single block has been laid on the imaginary site of the project. The initial 300 hectares of land allocated to the NLC and TUC for the project by the Federal Government has been cannibalized and shared to cronies by Omar and his gang. By choosing to plug the mouth of the National Administrative council members and others using the 10% down payment for homes deposited by hard-working Nigerian families, Omar has not only obtained a one way ticket to jail, he has also destroyed any remaining reputation the NLC has left. It is sad and shameful that leaders who should be struggling to protect the interest of workers have allowed themselves to be used against the same workers they swore to protect. Today, retirees who had earlier banked on the promises made by these leaders have seen their hopes of retiring into their own houses all but vanished. Unfortunately, Nigeria’s housing deficit which presently stands at 24 million units have become a feeding bottle of sort for these Labor leaders who blame the government for everything including their own inefficiency and irresponsibility. It is therefore imperative for the EFCC and other agencies of government saddled with the responsibility of tackling financial crimes and Ponzi schemes to rise up to the occasion and help Nigerian workers recover what the canker worms and Palmer worms have fleeced . bigtt76: The average Nigerian on the street do not make indomie noodles themselves. They rely on the services of Mai-Shai to make ends meet. At the mai-shai joint, a pack of prepared indomie goes for N80 with the option of fried egg at N50 each makes an average plate at N130.Your analysis was spot on but your conclusion is standing on one leg ! Now take a second look at the question : Most western analyst some of whom have never been to Nigerian say more than 70 %( more than half of Nigeria's population live on a Dollar per Day The implication of this statement is that around 80 million of us "feed on" "Utilize" less than a dollar a day To conclude that these statement is a fact no matter the population sampled baffles me ! |
he manner in which Nigeria confronted and defeated the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) has exposed the challenge Nigeria faces in fulfilling her potential. Corruption, tribalism, religious bigotry and extremism are symptoms of the challenge we face. They are not the challenge. To understand and address the challenge Nigeria faces, we need to understand why we were able to defeat EVD. From the first day in July 2014 when Patrick Sawyer introduced the virus to Nigeria, to the day when the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the virus contained in Nigeria, what we saw was unity of purpose and action across the length and breadth of Nigeria. There was no finger pointing, no accusation or counter accusation. All of us, whether Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or All Progressives Congress (APC), whether northerner or southerner, whether Christian or Muslim, whether male or female, united behind the singular objective of defeating EVD. Being that the whole is greater than the sum of her parts, Nigeria’s unity of purpose in challenging EVD unleashed such power, such passion, such never before seen cooperation that the virus had no chance of wreaking the havoc it had wreaked in other nations. The Federal Ministry of Health set up a committee to work with the affected states. Now, the committee set up by a PDP-led federal government worked hand in glove with Lagos and Rivers States both of them governed by the opposition APC. Information was shared and not withheld. Funds flowed freely for the federal government to these states. Daily briefings were held by Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, the Minister of Health, who had to rely on and trust information provided him by APC commissioners for health in Lagos and Rivers States. At the executive level, almost all the governors in Nigeria along with their commissioners for health turned up for a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan to address the challenge of EVD on August 13th, 2014. All parties were represented, including those who had previously refused to cooperate with the federal government on important issues such as the National Conference and intra party conferences. Governors who were hitherto at loggerheads with the president became his new best friend for life on the issue of EVD. The air of cooperation and synergy at that meeting was so contagious that together, the president and the governors came up with the ‘Ebola Handshake’ that required no touching. One after the other, these executives took turns to use hand sanitizers on national television. A paper that has the perception of being opposition leaning even carried a caption that day saying: “President Jonathan watches governor Fashola of Lagos State as he sanitizes his hands.” Was it therefore any wonder that on the 21st of September, 2014, WHO declared EVD “contained” in Nigeria? So profound was this achievement to the world that The New York Times had as its front page leading headline on October 1st, 2014 ‘Nigeria’s Action Seems to Contain Ebola Outbreak’. To put this in perspective, it may be necessary to remind my country men and women that October 1st is our Independence Day, but The New York Times considered our defeat of Ebola more newsworthy than that! Permit me to state that if there was ever any doubt about Nigeria’s independence as a nation fully in control of her destiny and not tied to the apron strings of Britain or any other nation in the Western Hemisphere, those doubts were put to rest with our conquest of EVD. And as if to declare the above to be true, several papers, local and international, carried the headlines that the United States (having recorded its first case of the Ebola Virus Disease on September 28th) is sending medical experts to Nigeria to learn how to contain the scourge. To me, the moral of the story is that Nigeria can overcome her national challenges if Nigerians apply the template we used in defeating Ebola, which are-unity, cooperation and multi-partisanship. President Jonathan put it best when he delivered his homily at the interdenominational service to mark Nigeria’s 54th Independence Anniversary on Sunday, September 28, 2014. He said: “The only thing is to appeal to all of us Nigerians to be united. If we are united, there is nothing we cannot conquer. Take the case of Ebola and this is a good example that all Nigerians must learn. “When Sawyer brought Ebola to Nigeria, it was in Lagos that this incidence happened and in terms of politics, Lagos is an opposition party but the central government is the ruling party. “From Lagos, Ebola moved to Rivers State and this is also an opposition party’s state. But because all Nigerians fought Ebola irrespective of political persuasion, irrespective of religion, or ethnicity, we defeated Ebola”. Incidentally, as the president said those words, he was not reading from his prepared speech. He spoke extempore, he spoke from his heart. On May 27, 2014, I was featured on the back-page of THISDAY newspaper in a piece titled ‘From Battle Ground to Common Ground’ where I identified three ways of building unity. I said unity could be built amongst people who shared the same goals in which case they would be constituents. I also said unity could come amongst people who had a common enemy in which case they would be comrades. I had said and still maintain that the unity of comradeship only last as long as there was a common enemy (in this case, Ebola). I had then opined that the best type of unity is one founded on friendship. As a pastor, I have read the Holy Bible and the Qur’an and both books talk about what happened to mankind in Babel. At Babel, all of humanity was united and spoke one language. This would have been a good thing except that the unity of humanity in Babel was a unity against God. But what is most instructive about Babel is God’s testimony about them. In Genesis 11:6 prophet Musa (as Moses is called in Islam) quoted God as saying “The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for them!” Since God spoke that word, every great nation has learnt the secret to greatness from that verse-unity. In fact, the greatest nations have included the word ‘unity’ in their name-The United States of America, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United Arab Emirates, etc. As Nigerians, let us learn from our experience with Ebola and move from the unity of comradeship to the unity of friends. If we can learn to speak with one voice against Boko Haram, against corruption, against religious and ethnic clashes, we will defeat them as we defeated Ebola and the newspapers of the world will begin to carry reports on how the nations of the earth are sending experts to Nigeria to learn from us how to be a great nation. Already, we have comradeship. Let us not let this dissipate as the threat from Ebola ebbs. Rather, let us build on this and grow our unity to the unity of friendship. When people read this, they may mistake my call for unity as a call for a one party state. Not so. We do not all have to agree to be united. But we do have to agree to disagree without being disagreeable for us to have the type of unity that leads to greatness. It is just like a choir or an orchestra. If everybody in the orchestra or choir sings in the same way, the music would not be engaging and elevating. For a choir to move its audience, you must have the alto, the contralto, the tenor, the baritone, the base, the treble, the falsetto and the soprano. The concertmaster does not expect these varying voices to sing in one tone because that is impossible. What is expected is that they should sing in harmony. It is this harmony, this unity of purpose in blending their various voices in a complementary manner that creates the music that stirs the soul. This is what we must do in Nigeria and by the grace of God we would use what some thought would destroy us (Ebola) as a catalyst to achieve the unity of purpose that will secure our place as one of the greatest nations on earth. • Omokri is Special Assistant to the President on New Media Tweets from: www.twitter.com/renoomokri http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/the-power-of-unity/190412/ |

Most western commentaries Report that more than half of the Nigerian Population live on less than a Dollar per day What most people don't know however is that most commentary quote the report Below "A 2006 United Nations Human Development Index that puts Nigeria at 159 out of 177 countries, with 70.8 per cent of the population living on less than one dollar a day and 92.4 per cent on less than two dollars a day (Human Development Report, 2006) http://www.unicef.org/wcaro/Countries_1320.html Incidentally I was serving in a rural Maternal and child hospital in Kufri Katsina state , Northwest Nigeria at that time and was able to at least see first hand how crude rural dwellers live and I can confidently report that some of these villagers are far wealthier than most of us think ! Why the PDP believes in stomach infrastructure — Jonathan September 27, 2014Premium Times President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday claimed his administration has succeeded in cutting the widespread poverty in the country by at least 50 per cent, adding that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, fully subscribes to the principle of “stomach infrastructure”. Mr. Jonathan said this while speaking at a PDP rally in Benin, tagged ‘Unity Mega Rally’. He said the PDP as a party believe in stomach infrastructure because the party must ensure that there was food security and job creation in the country. “Stomach infrastructure” creeped into Nigeria’s political lexicon after the Ekiti governorship election when voters were induced with bags of rice and other foodstuff to vote in certain directions. But the president said Saturday that any leader who claimed not to believe in stomach infrastructure was not ready to lead, as “you cannot lead hungry people.’’ He desrcibed the PDP as the only stable party since its formation that had never changed its name, logo or motto, adding that it is the only paty that gives its members the freedom to climb to the highest level. He said that all the nation needed was unity, and gave the assurance that although all the roads could not be rehabilitated at once, his administration would continue to improve on all infrastracture in the country. He also gave the reassurance that since the nation was able to conquer the Ebola Virus Disease, it would also conquer the Boko Haram insurgency. The president however appealed to party loyalists to be decent in their variuos electioneering competitions in order not to create enermies among themselves. Earlier, Vice President Namadi Sambo said the present administration had completed seven power projects with a total of 2,000 mega watts for the South-south under the transformation agenda. Similarly, Senate President David Mark described Mr. Jonathan as “a good sell’’ hence his unanimous adoption by the party as its choice candidate for the 2015 presidential election. The PDP National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, described the president as a bridge builder and unifying factor. He reassured the gathering that all defectors to the party would be reintegrated into the party without bias. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party, Tony Aneneih, said the zone had every reason to be proud of its contribution to national development. He also said that the zone had made sacrifice to keep the country together as well as contributed to the nation’s economic growth. Earlier in his arrival in Benin, the president inaugurated the Benin-Ofusu dual carriageway, where Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo described the quallity of work as impressive. Mr. Oshiomhole also congratulated the president on the massive road construction and rehabiliattion across states in the country. The rally was attended by who-is-who in the PDP both in the state and in the country, including serving and past governors, national assembly members, as well as aspirants. Benue State governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, declared on Tuesday that there is no vacancy for the Benue South Senatorial seat presently occupied by the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, saying “Our decision to return him to the Senate in 2015 is irrevocable.” Foreclosing the hopes of likely aspirants to the seat, Governor Suswam said ” we in Benue state have endorsed the candidature of Mark to return to the Senate. The position of Senator Mark is not contestable. We want him back and there is no question or argument about it”. Addressing a crowded audience of Nigerians majority of whom were Benue indigenes at a book presentation “Suswam, Politics and Governance in Benue State ” in Abuja ,, Suswam maintained that “Mark’s Senatorial seat is not contestable. Mark remains our choice. There is no vacancy.” The governor noted that as the state is united behind president Goodluck Jonathan for 2015, so also “we are solidly behind Mark for the 2015 senatorial seat,” warning those who may have interest in the seat to think otherwise because “there is no vacancy”. According to the governor, “the Senate President has performed creditably and it is only logical that we give him the needed support and encouragement to continue the good works in the upper legislative Chamber.” In his remarks at the occasion, President Jonathan who spoke through the Vice President Namadi Sambo praised Governor Suswam’s giant strides in the state which he said transformed the state from once rural setting to entrepreneurial environment. Jonathan noted that Benue State remains the agricultural hub of Nigeria and one of the most peaceful states in the country making progress. Also speaking at the occasion, Senate President Mark said that beyond infrastructural development of the state under Suswam, one of his greatest achievements is the peace and unity between and among the various ethnic groups in the state. He noted that the governor is a man of honour who stands for the truth , justice and fairness as captured in the book. www.twitter.com/ochejoseph
