These are certainly not the best of times for former Senator Godswill Akapbio. His case challenging the election of Senator Chris Ekpeyong as the duly elected Senator representing Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District is falling apart like packs of cards at the Tribunal currently sitting in Uyo. To add to his woes, the Chieftains of the APC, his party, such as Nsima Ekere, Senators John Akpanudoedeghe, Ita Enang, Don Etiebet, Chief Sony Jackson, Obong Umana Umana among others have all fallen out with him and have sworn never to have anything to do with him. Faced with these dire situation, alone, rejected dejected and afraid that he will be probed and jailed for the billions of Naira he stole from the state in his 8 year rule, Akapbio from exclusive details gleaned from an insider, is said to be secretly plotting the removal of the Head of the EFCC Zonal Office in Akwa Ibom State, Garba Gungum According to the source, Senator Akpabio is said to have been complaining that the Zonal Head is not protecting him enough and as such, is afraid the he may be probed and sent to jail. “Akpabio is alone; he is like a political leper no want wants to touch. His APC colleagues are all out for the jugular and the EFCC Zonal Head, Garba Gungum whom he has been boasting is in his pocket, is not given to his boastful antics and has distanced himself from him. Akpabio is afraid and is running from pillar to post plotting to have the hardworking Zonal Head removed. A source close to the EFCC say the Agency will not be intimidated by Akpabio’s desperate moves and that the Zonal Head is a hard-core professional, who enjoys the confidence of his bosses in Abuja. “Akpabio’s plot will certainly fail” the source added. http://leaders.ng/afraid-of-being-probed-for-stolen-billions-akpabio-plots-for-the-removal-of-efcc-zonal-head/ |

The All Progressive Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State has polished up plans and might move any moment from now to file an application at the Tribunal seeking to compel the Chairman of the Tribunal for National and State Assembly elections Justice Jennifer Mbalamen Ijohor to step down with immediate effect. This Newspaper gathered that the plan which is a product of the advice handed to the APC by the “Powers above” is meant to serve as additional effort to stir up ill-will against the tribunal chairman in a bid to stampede her to relinquish her seat as chairman of the Tribunal. Our source who is one of the chieftains of the APC in Akwa Ibom State disclosed that some bigwigs of the party who are deeply interested in the case met on Monday night to deliberate on the issue and rose with the decision to file a strong-worded application before the tribunal stating their discomfort with the chairman of the tribunal and demanding her to recuse herself from presiding over cases at the tribunal. The submission of the Application, it was further gathered, will be followed by a heightened media campaign which will amplify the message that Justice Jennifer Ijohor is not objective enough in the discharge of her duties as chairman of the tribunal. This plan to file an application seeking to compel Justice Jennifer Ijohor to step down as chairman of the tribunal is coming just a few days after the All Progressive Congress in Akwa Ibom had frontally accused the tribunal chairman of bias, insisting that she has a strong family relationship with a PDP stalwart, and so, there is a clear conflict of interest in her work as the Chairman of the Tribunal. The APC in a Press Conference addressed by the State Chairman of the Party further insisted in their accusations that the cases which have so far been dismissed by the tribunal were done out of bias against the APC. But the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State in sharp response has siad the fears expressed by the APC on the standing of the chairman are transparently lacking a strong foundation in both facts and law., reminding the APC that there are different laws enacted for the adjudication of election petition matters before the tribunal, which must be followed stricto sensu and failure to do so, usually attracts consequences. The PDP in a Press Conference addressed by the Publicity Secretary Comrade Ini Ememobong in Uyo on Monday also drew the APC’s attention to the fact In Amaechi v. INEC, the court of Appeal held inter alia that failure to comply with procedural steps, which ordinarily could be waived in a civil matter, will be fatal to the petition. “Additionally, in the cases mentioned by Mr. Okopido, the petitioners(APC and their failed candidates) failed or neglected to apply for Pre-trial forms which is in contravention of the provisions of the extant Electoral Act and the consequence is trite- the petition must be dismissed, same being incompetent.” The PDP maintained at the Conference. The PDP further insisted that a careful observation of the issues raised by the the APC will reveal that the APC is blaming the judge(who incidentally is not sitting alone )for their woes. The PDP wondered how the judge is responsible for the omission by APC counsel to comply with the provisions of the law governing election petition. https://www.thenewsfeed.ng/2019/07/16/akwa-ibom-apc-moves-to-file-application-to-compel-tribunal-chairman-to-step-aside/ |
Ugwuanyi’s engagement of professionals behind administration’s success – ANAN A member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), Sir Paschal Okolie has ascribed the economic recovery and governance successes recorded by the Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration in the past four years, to prudent management of the state's lean resources and his ingenuous interface with professionals to help drive his administration's policies. Speaking during the grand party and dinner organized by ANAN, South East Zone to mark the 40th Anniversary of the association, Sir Okolie, who is the state’s Accountant General and chairman of the occasion, added that Gov. Ugwuanyi has wisely employed the services of members of ANAN to manage the state’s scarce resources. The Accountant General disclosed that the enviable feats recorded by Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration in regular payment of workers’ salaries, with or without allocations from the federal account, as well as pensions and other entitlements of workers are as a result of the governor’s commitment to professionalism, fiscal discipline and the wellbeing of the people of Enugu State. “If you look around, industries are springing up. The economy of the state is being reactivated each time salaries are paid. All these are because we are prudent, accountable, transparent and Enugu State is experiencing peace and good governance”, he said. Sir Okolie expressed delight that the governor has demonstrated dexterity in sustaining and improving his administration’s laudable efforts towards providing good services to the people, stressing that ANAN has contributed immensely towards the development of the economy of Enugu State and Nigeria. In his welcome address, the chairman of ANAN, South East Zone, Prof. Uche Ugwuanyi stated that ANAN as professional body had at its formation strategically positioned its members at the strata of the society “through robust, well focused and appropriately structured capacity development”, adding that “continuing education and retraining programmes have continued to yield positive impact in the critical sectors of Nigeria’s economy”. According to him, “it is gratifying to note that the association has remained a pivotal force in ensuring that Nigeria’s dependency on the commercial and industrial efficiency of its productive capacity is attained through education and training of professional accountants in Nigeria”. Noting this was the first time the South East Zone of ANAN joined other zones to celebrate “our enviable professional body”, Prof. Ugwuanyi expressed the profound gratitude of the leaderships and members of the state branches of the zone to members of the national body led by the President and Chairman of Council, Prof. Muhammad Akaro Mainoma for their support, cooperation and remarkable achievements. “As ANAN celebrates her 40th year in Nigeria and happily being celebrated under the Presidency and Council Chairmanship of Prof. Muhammad Akaro Mainoma, Ph.D, FCNA, 1ST Vice Presidency of Prof. B.C. Osisioma, PhD, FCNA and Registrar/Chief Executive as Dr. Nuruddeen A. Abdullahi Mni, FCNA - this galloping Accountancy Professional body has achieved much locally and internationally within their relatively short stay in office as helmsmen. “Internationally, we are very proud to be identified with ANAN and her enviable affiliation with some international professional bodies as: International Federation of Accountants (IFAC); International Association of Accounting Education and Research (IAAER); XBRL Business Reporting Standard Organization; Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA); Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA) and South African Institute of Professional Accountants (SAIPA).This has placed ANAN ahead of most of her local and international contemporaries in our profession. “For the aforementioned achievements, too numerous to mention, and other programmes billed for the year 2019, I appreciate the Government of Enugu State, the National Executive of ANAN, South East Executive of ANAN, State Chapter Executives and other critical stakeholders for their invaluable contributions and support to our vision and modest efforts”, he added. As the witnesses they had lined up refuse to testify in APC’s favour insisting the elections in Akwa Ibom State were free, credible, transparent and fair and that the PDP won the elections free and square; and alarmed that their case at the tribunal is falling apart, the APC in a futile last-ditch efforts have decided to lobby the President of the Court of Appeal and Chief Justice of Nigeria, using a non-existent and unsubstantiated bogeyman involving a female judge at the tribunal. According to credible sources, the APC chieftains left Uyo to Abuja today (July 14, 2019) at 4pm to specifically lobby the President of the Court of Appeal and the Chief Justice of Nigeria on the what they believe is their last-ditched efforts to affect the outcome of an already flawed case. The elections in Akwa Ibom State were universally celebrated as the prime example of how to conduct free and credible elections under a hostile atmosphere. The International Observers celebrated the elections in the State and told the world the exercise was free and fair. The Police Commissioner in charge of the elections in the State, Ibrahim Kaoje in his report said the elections were credible, free and transparent. Several prominent Nigerians including APC Governors like Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State and other major players across Nigerian political divides have since congratulated Governor Udom Emmanuel and lauded the INEC for conducting a free and credible elections in the State. “What they APC is doing is simply grasping at straws, their witnesses have refused to testify, insisting the PDP won the elections free and square. Traveling to Abuja to see the President of the Court of Appeal; or the Chief Justice of the Nigeria, will not affect the outcome of the elections, because the learned gentleman they are planning to see always base their decisions on facts and the facts of the case do not favour the APC. Even a layman or woman will understand that their case is flawed. PDP won the State fair and square, fair and square” a source who is privy to the plans of the APC had told our reporter. https://www.thenewsfeed.ng/2019/07/14/tribunal-akwa-ibom-apc-heads-to-abuja-to-lobby-the-president-of-the-court-of-appeal-and-chief-justice-of-nigeria/ |

The wife of Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi, has urged women to remain focused on their noble roles in the society as mothers, especially in the lives of their husband and children. Mrs. Ugwuanyi who spoke during the flag-off of this year's Women's August Conference in Enugu State, popularly known as August Meeting, advised them to always be conscious of their children's activities both at home and outside the home. She stressed that such monitoring of children's behaviors and activities will help curb societal ills such as prostitution, child abuse and robbery, pointing out that the society can be reformed with some extra efforts from women. "As mothers, we have critical roles in the lives of our children and that of our husbands. We stay with our children, therefore we should be able to monitor them and know the company they keep," she counseled. Earlier, various women groups in the state, who trooped out in their numbers to participate in the annual event, lauded Mrs. Ugwuanyi for her commitment and determination towards improving the wellbeing of the children, youths, women and indigent persons in the state. The women also commended the Enugu Governor's wife for uniting women of diverse faith and political leanings in the state through the works of her pet project, Ugo's Touch of Life Foundation (U-TOLF). Speaking, wife of the leader of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Mrs Vivian Ezeugwu, said the prevailing peace in the state was due to the fact that both Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and his wife, Monica, are a Godfearing couple committed to enthroning peace and good governance. "The election of Gov. Ugwuanyi and his wife is a clear manifestation of God's blessings to the state," said Mrs Ezeugwu, who disclosed that Mrs Ugwuanyi has given hope to the vulnerable, including women and children. Mrs. Ezeugwu who described Enugu State as a model for other states, further enjoined women to sustain their support for Gov. Ugwuanyi's administration in appreciation of the governor's generosity, good works and inclusive government. In her remark, the wife of the chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Barrister (Mrs) Ifeoma Ugwu, applauded the remarkable feats of the present administration in empowering women through various interventions such as skills acquisition. Her words: "Look at what has been happening in Enugu State since this administration came on board; many women have been empowered through skills acquisition and even in business. Some of our children have benefited from our mummy's (Mrs Ugwuanyi) scholarship programme, while the Ugo's Touch of Life Foundation has been assisting the indigent through economic empowerment and free medical treatments." The occasion, which sets the tone for the annual August Meeting popular in the South East, across the 17 Local Government Areas of the state, also featured raffle draws, dance competition, march past, water race, among other activities. By Zikeyi John Christianity in Nigeria, on the evidence of filled church pews and mega-crusades, each heaving with millions of worshippers at any given time, appear to be in rude health. The perception of the faith being in robust health finds expression in statements such as “the Devil is a liar”, “the gates of Hell shall not prevail” and “the Kingdom of Christ is marching on”. That church leaders in Nigeria have grown in influence, often provoking the type of adulation reserved for pop stars, is taken as confirmation of the belief that, indeed, “the Kingdom of Christ is marching on”. But looked at very closely, Christianity in Nigeria is everything but in rude health. It is actually ailing and may find itself in the Intensive Care Unit sooner than later. The signs of ill-health are bold, but are confused, sometimes wilfully, with something else. There is a need to make a clarification. This writer has no intention to scare. What this piece seeks to do is show that the trumpeted robust health of Christianity in the country is actually a prelude to the erosion of its status and influence, a development that will be marked by huge reduction in the country’s Christian population and by extension a sharp dip in Christian influence on socio-political affairs. There is a temptation to view this as alarmist. After all, the pews are still filled for services; crusades continue to draw more worshippers and church coffers brimming with seed and tithes. Church leaders have also become some of the country’s most influential celebrities. Take a step back and you may begin to see that the bullish claim that “the Kingdom of Christ is marching on” is made by rote and certainly not founded proper analysis or introspection. First, as a religion, Christianity is endangered and looks more likely to lose its influence as time goes on. According to a recent report by the Pew Research Centre, the US fact tank, 9.5 per cent of the world’s Muslim population by 2060 will be Nigerians. Four years ago, according to the fact tank, Nigeria was home to 5.1 per cent of the global Muslim population. It is, therefore, projected that the Muslim population in Nigeria would have leapt from a little over 90million (50 per cent) in 2015 to 283.1million (60.5 per cent) by 2060. The number of Christians in the country, 86.6million as at 2015 (48.1 per cent of local population), is expected to rise to 174.2million (37.2 per cent of local population) by 2060. As at 2015, Nigeria had 3.8 per cent of the global Christian population. This figure, according to the US fact tank, will climb to 5.7 per cent by 2060. In any language, this spells a reduction in the local Christian population from 48.1 per cent to 37.2 per cent and a steady march of Islam around the world, including in Nigeria. By that projection, there would be 108millon more Muslims than Christians in 2060 with dire consequences for Christians in the political space. Islam has remained the world’s fastest growing religion and is expected to continue growing in the number of adherents and, naturally, in influence. Its encouragement of polygamy puts it an advantage, locally and globally, at having far more adherents in the near future. Between 2010 and 2015, it was estimated that 31 per cent of babies born all over the world were of Muslim parentage. The projection is that by 2035, children born to Muslim parents will comfortably outnumber those born to Christians worldwide. The projected reduction in local Christian population portends, as earlier stated, the diminution in the influence of Christianity in the country’s socio-political sphere. With religion a huge determinant in national politics, Islam will be at massive advantage. It is currently enjoying that and stands to continue doing so by the time the next elections come around. In view of this, the idea that a Christian president is a possibility by 2023, when Nigerians vote next, is a little more than implausible. This is especially so on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) which, from all indications, appears to be religiously insensitive. I project that by 2023, Islam in Nigeria would have disappeared into the horizon that Christianity would require a pair of binoculars to catch a glimpse of it. That projection is based on what I think leaders of the Christian faith in the country place the accent on: Lush life-on the sweat of millions of Christians they claim to lead. The country’s Pentecostal landscape, which currently stands as the face of Christianity, is teeming with preachers, who seem to think that ownership of private jets, gleaming cathedrals, establishment of educational institutions their members cannot afford and, most sadly, using their privileged position to obtain patronage from the same people oppressing Christians are the equivalent of providing leadership. The hollow prosperity theology, which teaches that financial well-being of adherents is directly linked to seed sowing and tithing, is bereft of Christianity’s transcendental goal, which teaches believers that that there is more to life than the satisfaction of immediate material needs of hunger and poverty. Rather than this noble goal, it has commodified Christ and showing its exponents in the same light as the grasping political elite. The commodification of Christianity has had the eminently unfortunate effect of sowing disunity among Christians, who are supposed to speak with one voice against the dangers to their spiritual and material well-being. The Pentecostal explosion has seen those who lost their jobs or excommunicated from other churches announce themselves as “General Overseers” and begin a scramble for relevance. This category, desperate to thrive, targets members of the mainline churches by calumniating their doctrines. And when they begin to thrive, the newly-minted General Overseers fish for members in older evangelical ministries, leaving a long trail of bad blood. Less important, if at all, to the leaders of the faith in Nigeria is the need to address societal problems through adequate mobilization of Christians to demand social justice. A view, which I agree with, is that the church has aligned itself with the oppressors of the masses. Politicians, sadly including people of other religious persuasions, are routinely permitted to use Christian gatherings for speaking and photo opportunities in pursuit of their political agenda, while private sector criminals, such as bankers, are given front-row seats in Christian gatherings. These steps of the church make it less credible as a moral voice in achieving the desired socio-political and economic liberation in Nigeria. There is no need sugar-coating Christianity’s outlook in Nigeria. Despite the long and loud claim that “the Kingdom of Christ is marching on”, the faith is in a bad place. For Christianity to regain its fast-dissipating influence, its leaders need to act and very fast, too. First, there must be robust and consistent prophetic denunciation of the oppressive mechanism. The prophetic stance of the church obligates her to confront and challenge the systems of corruption and injustice, which exploit and deprive Christians by criticizing and judging them by Christian standards. In addition, the church needs to understand the context in which it operates in Nigeria and to encourage its members to participate actively and fully in the political process, being not ashamed to use their faith as bargaining chips for 2023. Very importantly, the conversion of the ordinary man must run along with the aforesaid. The church’s mission in Nigeria goes beyond commitment to philanthropic activism, protesting against social injustice and mobilizing people for active participation in social transformation. While the church seeks socio-political and economic liberation, it must be relentless in seeking the spiritual liberation of the people. Conversion will fight depletion in Christian ranks as well as ensure that social change bears lasting fruits. The attention of the Youth Coalition for Peace and Good Governance (YCPGG) has been drawn with utter dismay to yet another smear campaign against the peace-loving and high performing Governor of Enugu State by mischief makers over the false and baseless allegation trending on social media that the governor has secretly allocated land for RUGA settlement to Fulani Herdsmen. This cheap blackmail is not only a blatant lie but another joke taken too far by the sponsors, who are abroad at the moment, in a failed attempt to distract the governor and mislead the good people of Enugu State and beyond. As a formidable youth group, we are fully aware that the South East Governors Forum through its Chairman, Gov. David Umahi, recently declared that there is no plan to establish Ruga settlement in any part of the south-east zone and further denied any plan by governors of the zone to cede any part of their land to Fulani Herdsmen. Consequently, this mischievous news that Enugu Governor has given land for RUGA secretly to the herders in “Aninri and Nkanu LGAs of Enugu State” is not only unfounded but a cheap blackmail that will fail as usual, because there is nothing like that in the state. We are aware that those sponsoring this mischievous falsehood on social media from their comfort zone abroad have an ulterior motive to blackmail, misinform and mislead the public, but our candid advice to them is that they should tread with caution and desist from peddling fake news that could undermine the existing peace and good governance in Enugu State. YCPGG strongly believes that the South East governors, who always speak with one voice, will sooner or later reaffirm their position on the issue of RUGA settlement which has already been suspended by the federal government. We therefore assured the detractors that the second term of Gov. Ugwuanyi will surely end in praise. Signed: Hon. Ikechukwu Ibeh (Coordinator) Engr. Jude Onyema (Secretary) https://thepunditng.com/enugu-state-has-did-not-allocate-land-for-ruga-ycpgg/

* Akpabio’s aide Accused of Circulating Defence Witness Pictures Counsel to Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Barrister Ifeoluwa, has alerted the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Uyo, that INEC staff are complaining of threat to life from persons suspected to be agents of Senator Godswill Akpabio. Senator Godswill Akpabio is at the tribunal challenging the election that produced Senator Chris Ekpenyong as representative of Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District. It was further alleged that this might be another ploy by Senator Godswill Akpabio and his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, to relocate the tribunal to Abuja, after several failed attempts. Counsel to INEC reported to the tribunal that INEC staff are scared of testifying following a possible threat to life and invasion of their privavcy by one Anietie Ekong, media aide to Senator Akpabio, who circulated pictures of witnesses taken inside the court room on social media. He presented an evidence of the post to the tribunal. In a swift reaction, Sunday Ameh, Counsel to Senator Akpabio defended the aide, claiming that technology could have been used to juxtapose the witness’ picture on the tribunal background. He attempted to insinuate bias, noting that the Tribunal did nothing earlier on when his witness complained of threat to life. The Tribunal rebuked Ameh for suggesting bias and reminded him that he did not bring any evidence to proof his witness’ claim. The tribunal expressed displeasure that Ameh raised his voice at the Tribunal. Senator Akpabio’s Media Aide Anietie Ekong, had previously testified in the tribunal with video recordings at variance to the case at hand, has been accused of abusing tribunal process by taking snapshots of defense witnesses in the witness dock, and sharing to APC supporters on social media across the state. The two witnesses including Elizabeth Usen, an INEC staff who testified to the thuggery and banditary in Essien Udim LGA during the elections, have been marked and their pictures are currently in circulation across the closed groups of the APC and the social media space. https://www.thenewsfeed.ng/2019/07/05/election-tribunal-inec-staff-raises-alarm-over-threat-to-life/ |

A plot by the All Progressives Congress, APC to disrupt proceedings of the Governorship Tribunal has been leaked. According to the leaked information, certain chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have concluded arrangement with thugs to orchestrate a violent scenario and disrupt proceedings of Akwa Ibom Governorship Tribunal when it resumes tomorrow, Thursday July 4th, 2019. This is to create an unsafe and an insecure environment, hoping to force the Tribunal to be relocated to Abuja. It was gathered that once the case is transferred to Abuja, it could easily be influenced to favour the first petitioner, Nsima Ekere. In a similar development , since respondents began calling their witnesses – in the case of Godswill Akpabio versus Christopher Ekpenying, PDP, INEC- there has been beef up of security within and around the ongoing National Assembly Election Tribunal at Metro Road, Uyo. Findings show that the number security officers were doubled, there was restriction of vehicular movement into the court premise (as only cars belonging to the judges, petitioner and respondents were allowed to drive into the premises). Also, security personnel sealed off access to windows and barricaded the entrance into the court and screened members of the audience before being allowed in. Throwing more light on the heightened security, a policeman explained that there was a security report, alleging a plot to assault witnesses. https://www.thenewsfeed.ng/2019/07/04/just-in-leaked-intel-exposes-apc-plot-to-disrupt-guber-tribunal/ |

He added that “in a situation where they have overstayed the period of sentences they were convicted, we take instant decisions to let them go”. The jurist, who advocated a uniform criminal justice regime act to be adopted by the respective component states “without affecting the very substance intendment of the act”, said Gov. Ugwuanyi deserves to be congratulated for the adoption of the act in Enugu State. “Your Excellency, you deserve to be congratulated for that. The innovative approach which is among the series of post-election executive actions so far taken by Gov. Ugwuanyi, to advance the cause of development in the state, is also geared towards the full actualization of his administration’s policy thrust and campaign promises for more positive impact on the peoples’ living standard. The administrative review therefore underscores the governor’s ultimate desire to further strengthen and grease the wheel of governance for the wellbeing of the people. After his re-election, the governor has continued to entrench peace and good governance, address the needs of residents and close the gaps between the hinterlands and urban areas in line with the 2019 budget deliverables for better urban, inter-local government and rural infrastructure in the state. His administration’s first tenure, no doubt, witnessed unprecedented achievements in all sectors of public service, especially in the areas of massive infrastructural development, peace and security, workers’ welfare, sound education, qualitative and affordable healthcare delivery, investment drive and socio-economic expansion, among others, despite the lean resources at its disposal. For instance, Ugwuanyi’s administration has remained regular in the payment of workers’ salaries and retirees’ pensions. Over 400 kilometers of roads have been constructed and reconstructed across the length and breadth of the state. The administration has recruited over 4000 primary and junior secondary school teachers, with additional 1,500 for primary education ongoing. 589 primary and secondary school blocks across the state have so far been constructed and renovated, while additional 263 are ongoing. Learning tools are being procured intermittently to improve the standard of education. Similar transformation is taking place in the state-owned higher institutions such as in the areas of infrastructural development and accreditation/reaccreditation of courses. The story is the same in the health sector, among others. Recently, Enugu State was rated by the World Bank Group as the second most advanced state in Nigeria towards the frontier of global good practices with regards to Ease of Doing Business. Through the impressive increase in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), as a result of far reaching reforms introduced in the sector by the governor, Enugu State has remained on top as one of the few states in the country that can survive without allocations from the federation account, among other outstanding ratings. The ongoing reform in public service will fundamentally mirror the programmes and policies of the government as contained in its four-point agenda, take stock and engage in critical analysis of inherent issues and developments to be able to invent new ideas on how to improve efficient service delivery and accelerate good governance in the state. In a nutshell, the initiative is all about the people, their wellbeing and the avowed promise to reward them with good governance as the true heroes of democracy. It is also about the progress of Enugu State and the need to sustain its enviable status as the historical capital of the Eastern Nigeria. The public service reform therefore is a major milestone that has demonstrated the governor’s dexterity, innovativeness and political will to undertake another voyage towards the rapid development of Enugu State. Consequently, the reform has reawakened the consciousness of the public to the rising challenges facing the public service and the need for periodic policy review to enable government at all levels to strengthen their service delivery strategy for optimal result. It is pertinent to note that the newly inaugurated seven sectoral ad-hoc committees, namely; education, health, public service, justice, water, security and chieftaincy/ community matters, have an assemblage of high-profile professionals in their various fields of expertise. For instance, a glance at the committees’ membership shows that the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Prof. James Ogbonna; the Coordinator, Health Policy Research Group, UNN, Prof. Obinna Onwujekwe; former Head of Service and Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Onyema Ocheoha; former state Attorney General, Chief Mrs. Justina Offia, SAN; Seasoned Water Engineer and former/pioneer MD of Anambra (now Enugu) State Water Corporation, Engr. Laz Mba; Retired Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo and former state Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Prof. Frank Asogwa, chair the above listed seven committees, respectively. Inaugurating the all-important committees, Gov. Ugwuanyi expressed confidence that the membership will deploy their wealth of experience, expertise and commitment to add value to the governance of the state. The governor disclosed that the committees will “review the structure and operations of Enugu State Public Service over the last four years; analyze the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats within the various sectors of governance; develop roadmap, templates, policies and systems that will support the government to consistently and optimally discharge its various sectoral mandates”. Other terms of reference, according to him, include making recommendations that would help his administration to “reposition government to improve transparency and coordination in its business process and strengthen responsiveness of the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs); ensure that the administration delivers on its electoral promises and social contract, key of which are employment generation, enhanced social services and good governance, rural development, security and justice; consider any other matter(s) which may be incidental or ancillary to the above stated tasks and make feasible recommendations thereon to the state government with a view to improving collaborative productivity and optimal delivery of desired services by the government”. Interestingly, to further underscore the importance of the policy reform towards the full actualization of his administration’s sound vision for Enugu State, in keeping with its social contract with the people, Gov. Ugwuanyi opted to work closely with the committees and operate mostly from their secretariat and less from the Government House till the conclusion of the exercise, which has a one month duration. For the Public Service Committee Chairman, Prof. Onyema Ocheoha, who responded on behalf of other members of the committees, it was a great honour for finding them worthy to serve the state. The erudite scholar and professor of Public Administration, applauded Gov. Ugwuanyi’s passion and dexterity in conducting the affairs of the state in his first term of his administration as well as the innovative approach he has adopted to advance good governance in the state. He promised the governor that the committees will study the terms of reference and adopt a holistic approach to policy analysis and decision making in the discharge of their duties for optimal result, saying: “You have taken the right people to handle this important assignment”. As the outcome of the exercise is being awaited, a clear message has been sent cross - that the next four years of Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration will witness a great deal of positive impact on the lives of the people of Enugu State, who have continued to show his government tremendous support and goodwill. Enugu State is truly in the hands of God!#amokelouis https://dailypost.ng/2019/07/03/louis-amoke-imperative-ugwuanyis-public-service-reform/ |
*SENATOR AKPABIO’S ARMED THUGS ABDUCTED US FOR 10 HOURS* _…FORCED US AT GUNPOINT TO WRITE RESULTS FOR APC- INEC OFFICER_ Senator Godswill Akpabio today watched as an INEC returning officer for Ekpenyong Ward 1 in Essien Udim local government area, Ammba Ammba, revealed the harrowing experience of INEC officials in the hands of APC armed thugs during the February Presidential and National Assembly Elections. At the ongoing National Assembly Elections Petitions Tribunal in Uyo, Ammba in an emotional tone, narrated that he and some of his colleagues were abducted by heavily armed thugs to a compound where there was no network and kept for a long period under very harsh conditions by the former governor’s armed men. He added that Presiding Officers were kept in captivity between the hours of 8:00am and 6:30pm, where they were forced to thumbprint and write results in favour of Senator Akpabio in Essien Udim. The incumbent Senator Ekpenyong was absent during the session as he was said to be attending plenary in Abuja. Ammba who appeared for the defense team as DW3 after being subpoenaed to tribunal, tendered his report of the 2019 general election dated 23/02/2019 to be used as an evidence with his deposition. Under re-examination by the INEC Counsel Ifeoluwa, Ammba explained that the reports signed by polling officials marked as P445-P449 were written at gunpoint while under captivity of Senator Akpabio’s armed bandits. Ifeoluwa: "Look at Exhibits P445-P459. From your reports, these results were written under threat to lives of Presiding Officers in your ward. Is that so? " Ammba: "That's correct my Lord" Ifeoluwa: "On the first page, you'd see Ekpenyong 1 is listed as one of the wards affected by the cancellation. Am I correct?" Ammba: "That's correct My Lord" Ifeoluwa: "Open the second page all 15 polling units in Ekpenyong 1 are listed in Exhibit R352A. Is that not so?" Ammba: "That's correct" The INEC official also explained that the voter’s registers used for the elections had on them, the date they were printed, being Saturday, January 12, 2019. "These registers were printed before the Presidential and National Assembly Elections," Ifeoluwa asked? "That's correct my Lord" Ammba replied. Ifeoluwa: "So I'd also be correct to say that these were the registers that were distributed and used during the elections?" Ammba: "That's correct my Lord" Relying on the voter’s register marked as R40-R55, Ifeoluwa extracted from the witness, an affirmation that the boxes meant to be ticked as an indication of accreditation, were not actually ticked. Ifeoluwa: "Please look at the Exhibits again and confirm that there are no tickings on the boxes for accreditation for Presidential and National Assembly Elections". "I can confirm that there are no tickings for accreditation for Presidential and National Assembly Elections" - Ammba Ifeoluwa: "I put it to you that since there are no tickings for accreditation on voter’s registers, it means there was no accreditaion" Ammba: "That's correct my Lord" Ifeoluwa: "Because of this lack of accreditation, that's why the 15 polling units in your ward were cancelled. Is that so? " Ammba: "Yes my Lord" https://thepunditng.com/senator-akpabios-armed-thugs-abducted-us-for-10-hours/ |

The Police in Enugu State have described the reported chasing away of some herdsmen from Enugu community as the handiwork of mischief makers, vowing to bring such persons to book. DAILY POST reports that this was contained in a statement issued Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the State, SP Ebere Amaraizu. A video had surfaced online, with a claim that herders were chased away from Nenwe in Nkanu, Enugu State. But Amaraizu, in the statement, declared that no such incident happened in the State. The statement read: “The Enugu State command of the Nigeria police force wishes to inform members of the public that its attention has been drawn to information in existence that large herd of cows and some herders were escorted peacefully out of nenwe, Aninri community of Enugu state on 29/6/19 by youths believed to be from Agbada Nenwe. “The Police wish to update members of the public who may have been misinformed with the state of things. “On receipt of this information, the state commissioner of police directed for an investigation into the alleged development and following preliminary enquiry conducted, it was revealed that such situation never existed and that it was only the movement of cattle and herders from Cross River State, through Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government area of Ebonyi State and a neighboring town for grazing. “The said piece of information in circulation is viewed to be the handiwork of mischief makers who want to brew rancour, cause panic and fear and also sow seed of acrimony as well as instigating violence. “The command has already commenced action with a view to identifying and fishing out those in the habit of mischievous information so that they can be brought to book. The commissioner of police enjoins all to be law abiding and go about their normal lawful businesses,” he further stated. https://dailypost.ng/2019/06/29/police-deny-reported-chasing-herdsmen-enugu-threaten-sanction/ |
.....Hire Corps Members as witnesses The Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC in the just concluded general elections Mr. Nsima Ekere and his party caucus, are apprehensive following their inability to produce Audio/Video evidence from the multimillion naira surveillance gadgets they used during election. It was learnt that former member representing Ikono State constituency, Hon. Victor Udofia, supplied substandard Audio/Video surveillance gadgets which turned out to be totally useless and are presently heaped in the residence of the former Commissioner for Works, Mr. Don Etim in Ikot Ekpene. Udofia was recommended to Nsima by Ibanga Akpabio, his godfather. Both have been asked to refund N30, 000, 000 being part of the total sum doled out by the former Chief Executive Officer of NDDC to gather intelligence during election. Consequently, in a bid to salvage his family name, Ibanga Akpabio’s cousin and Superintendent of Police, Mr Idorenyin Imeh Akpabio - whose network firm is located at 5 Etim Okpoyo lane off Lagos street , Ewet Housing estate has concluded arrengment to invite a hitech expert by name Oluwale from Lagos to work on the gadgets with the hope of using it in the next session of the Governorship Election Tribunal in Uyo. In a related development, Nsima Ekere has approached some INEC adhoc staff, especially NYSC members to testify for him against the PDP and Gov. Udom Emmanuel. Our informants confirm that Ekere has resorted to relying on Corps members after party faithful have refused to testify in court. He is said to have mobilized quite a number of them with intention of using them to testify in the tribunal. https://thepunditng.com/election-tribunal-nsima-apc-apprehensive-over-failed-electronic-gadgets/ |

Compressed video’ tendered at tribunal fails to prove Akpabio’s claim … Akpabio contradicts his 65,000 votes claim during cross-examination A ‘compressed video’ shown as evidence at the election petitions tribunal fails to show that the former senate minority leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, was accredited to vote at his polling unit during the 2019 presidential and national assembly election. The video which was shown via a projector by Senator Akpabio’s media aide, Anietie Ekong, at the tribunal was intended to prove that Akpabio voted at his polling unit (unit 9) Independence High School, Ukana West, voted during the election. Akpabio had told the tribunal that he, his wife and family members voted during the election. But the video did not show where Akpabio nor his wife was accredited. It did not also show where election results was declared at the polling unit. Ekong, Akpabio’s aide and bearer of the video said he recorded the video by himself during the election. During cross-examination, Barr. U. Njoku counsel to the first respondent, Engr. Chris Ekpenyong, asked Ekong if he was a voter or was accredited to be at the polling unit where he made the recording. Njoku, “You are not a registered voter at the Petitioner’s polling unit. Do you agree? ” Ekong, “Yes, My Lord.” Njoku, “I suggest to you that you are a registered voter in Ward 13, Oruk Anam.” Ekong, “Yes, my Lord”. Do you agree?” Ekong, “Yes, My Lord.” Senator Akpabio who was also cross-examined on Tuesday, 25th June, struggled helplessly to prove that he voted during the election. Counsel to the PDP, Solomon Umoh (SAN) put it to Akpabio that he did not vote during the election. “Witness, is that your picture on on page 18 of 162 in exhibit R170?” Akpabio, “Yes.” Umoh, “Beside your name, there is no thumbprint, phone number or ticked column.” Akpabio, “What you are saying is correct but this is not the voters register that was used on election day. I am a victim. It’s very painful that someone would collect money and talk anyhow.” Umoh, “My Lord, I demand an apology for that statement” – Umoh Akpabio, “My Lord, if I have said anything to annoy him, I apologize.” Umoh, “I put it to you that you did not vote and there was no accreditation in your unit.” Akpabio, “My Lord, the way he is putting it to me….. ” “Don’t bother about how he put it to you, just answer his question”, Tribunal Chairman. Akpabio had approached the election petitions tribunal challenging the result of the 2019 election for Ikot Ekpene senatorial district. He claimed in an affidavit deposed at the Federal High Court Abuja, that he scored 65,000 votes in Essien Udim Local Government Area in the Ikot Ekpene senatorial district election. The former senate minority leader had further claimed in his statement of oath cited by the defense counsel, Solomon Umoh (SAN), that results were given to party agents and security agents. However, under cross-examination Akpabio said he scored 61,329 votes and that the results were with the party. “Results went to the party. I had 61,329 votes”, he said. However, counsel to the PDP, Solomon Umoh (SAN), told the tribunal that Akpabio’s claim before the tribunal was inconsistent with his deposition at the Federal High Court, Abuja, and can not be substantiated. “When you went to FCT court in Abuja , you secured an order with an affidavit on oath. You told them you scored 65,000 votes and 60,000 was taken from you.” Akpabio pleaded that a lawyer swore to the affidavit. “My Lord, a lawyer swore to this affidavit. If I said 65,000 and later got to hear 61,000 plus, I’m not far away. I rely on what INEC has”. The tribunal adjourned to Monday, June 1, for continuation of cross-examination. https://www.thenewsfeed.ng/2019/06/27/compressed-video-tendered-at-tribunal-fails-to-prove-akpabios-claim/ |
