PoliticsNigeria Is Sliding Towards Authoritarian Rule – NLC by Ofunaofu(op): 10:12am On Jul 22, 2025
The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, on Monday, warned that Nigeria is sliding dangerously towards authoritarian rule, as the country’s democratic space continues to shrink and workers’ rights come under sustained assault.

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, who made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 21st Rain School of the NLC, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, stated that Nigeria was on the brink of tyranny.

Daily Trust reports that this year’s Rain School was themed, “Labour and Human Rights in a Shrinking Democratic Space.”

Speaking before the event began fully, Ajaero described Nigeria as a democratic space, where citizens, especially the working class, face an assault on their rights to free speech, assembly, and participation in governance.

According to him, the ongoing clampdown on civic freedoms and union activities is a calculated effort to silence the voices of Nigerian workers ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He claimed that the federal government and state governors were systematically crushing dissent, weakening democratic institutions and unlawfully seizing workers’ contributions, which it described as stealing workers’ sweat.

Efforts to get reactions of the Presidency to the development were not successful as the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga and the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala could not be reached on phone.

The duo was yet to react to text and WhatsApp messages sent to their numbers as at the time of filing this report.

Also, the Director General of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Lateef Shittu, neither answered call put across to his phone nor responded to a text message sent for a response to the allegations against the governors.

Speaking further, the labour leader said, “It is clear that governance has been abandoned for 2027 politicking. We are all on our own. Leaders who should be working to alleviate suffering are instead consumed by power games – leaving workers and ordinary Nigerians to bear the brunt of economic hardship and burgeoning insecurity, all results of their own policies.

“In a healthy democracy, this would be politically suicidal—because robust engagement would hold such leaders accountable.”

Ajaero added that this year is a time when the socio-economic framework is riddled with suspicion, saying that governance continues to produce negative results for the citizenry.

“We are gathered at a time when Nigeria is ranked as one of the ten worst countries in the world for workers’ rights violations.

“There is always an inverse relationship between the abuse of human and workers’ rights and the state of a nation’s democratic space. As the democratic space expands, abuse of human and workers’ rights contracts—but as the democratic space shrinks, abuse of rights expands.

“Should we be concerned about the democratic space as workers and trade unionists? Yes, we should. A shrinking democratic space is a threat to workers, to the masses, and to our nation,” he said.

Labour flays Edo gov over comments against Peter Obi

The labour leader also berated Edo State governor, Monday Okpebholo, for his comment against the presidential candidate of Labour Party in the last 2023 elections, Peter Obi.

Ajaero also recalled how the NLC in Edo State was allegedly factionalised by the governor in order to have loyal members of the congress on his side.

He said, “The threats against Mr. Obi and his supporters are a stark reminder of how quickly democratic safeguards are being eroded in our nation—with grave consequences for workers. We are not surprised by the undemocratic utterances of the Edo State Governor, Senator Okpebholo.

“If he can invade the NLC Secretariat and attempt to create a parallel NLC structure in the state, despite all entreaties, then he is capable of threatening any Nigerian citizen without a second thought.

“This is, to us, a product of ignorance about democratic tenets—and a morbid fear of the same democratic process that brought him to power. The ability to organise—whether through unions, civil society, or political parties—is the bedrock of a functioning democracy.

“When governors unilaterally decide who can speak, assemble, or even celebrate a birthday, they are not just targeting opposition voices—they are testing how far they can go in suppressing collective action altogether.

“For the NLC, this is an urgent call to defend the democratic space that allows us to fight for workers’ rights. If we allow these encroachments to go unchallenged, we risk normalising a reality where the government picks and chooses who enjoys constitutional rights.

“We must stand firm—not just for Nigerian workers, whose livelihoods depend on the freedom to demand justice without fear, but also for every Nigerian who seeks to participate in governance.”

NLC, NSITF crisis deepens

Last week, Daily Trust reports both the NLC and the management of Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) locked horns over a plot of land allocated by the Federal Capital Territory Administration.

While NSITF claimed it lost the documents of the land allocation with the Plot Numbers MISC 54707 and MISC 54824 respectively, the NLC said the agency is ignorant of how things are done regarding land allocation.

Commenting on the matter during the event, Ajaero said the federal government is about to use the NSITF to muzzle the NLC by driving the congress out of its current headquarters where the agency is now laying claim on.

He said, “Let me also inform you: the new management of NSITF, acting under the influence of anti-worker forces, is attempting to illegally take over the NLC National Secretariat. Let me be clear: this is not just an attack on a building—it is an attack on the collective voice of Nigerian workers.

“It is part of a grand plan to silence our voices. But just like past attempts, this too shall fail—with your vigilance and solidarity. This is a plan to muzzle the NLC, weaken our movement, and silence workers ahead of the 2027 elections. But we say to them: You will fail!

“The NLC is not just a building or an institution—it is the fighting spirit of millions of workers and citizens. No force can crush it.

“We must organise, mobilise, and build workers’ political power. As 2027 approaches, politicians are scheming—not to serve, but to grab power. We must not be spectators. We must rethink our political engagement.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has accused the Federal Government and state governors of systematically crushing dissent, weakening democratic institutions, and unlawfully seizing workers’ contributions, which it described as stealing workers’ sweat.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 21st Rain School of the NLC, held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, stating that Nigeria was on the brink of tyranny.

The PDP must zone the presidential ticket to the South.

Seyi Makinde and Wike should contest it between themselves. Whoever emerges should be supported by all especially by those who have been insisting and clamouring for the PDP presidential ticket to go to the South.

At the very least, this would further divide Tinubu's southern votes especially now that his over 5 million northern votes are gone, gone for good.

PoliticsJust In: EERC Issues New Tariff, Crashes Band A From N209 To N160 Per Kwh by Ofunaofu(op): 9:14pm On Jul 20, 2025
…Freezes Bands B, C, D and E Tariffs

The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC), has issued a new tariff to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the utility that succeeded Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, (EEDC), for electricity distribution in the state, reviewing electricity cost for Band A from N209/ kWh (per kiloWatt) to N160 kWh, effective from August 1, 2025.

This was contained in the Commission’s Order No. EERC/2025/003 entitled “Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025, issued by the Commission at the weekend.

It said its decision was cost reflective, insisting that tariff must reflect power generation subsidy by the federal government for the benefit of electricity consumers.

EERC predicated its action on the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, which empowers the Commission to regulate the activities of operators in power generation, transmission, and distribution in and exclusively for the state.

This Law signed by Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State in September 2023, is pursuant to the 2023 Constitutional Amendment which firmly established the legislative authority of the states on electricity matters within their states. This was followed by the passage of the Electricity Act 2023, that repealed the Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005, and introduced major changes such as the separation of distribution and supply operations, and empowers states to regulate their own electricity markets.

Throwing more light on the development, EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, said that the reduction in tariff became imperative following the Commission’s review of MainPower’s tariff and licence applications as the new subsidiary company (SubCo) that operates in Enugu State.

“We reviewed their entire costs, using our Tariff Methodology Regulations 2024, and the supporting Distribution Tariff Model to get an average price of N94.

“The price is low because the Federal Government has been subsidising electricity generation cost which charges only N45 out of the actual cost of N112. That was how we came about the average tariff of N94 as cost reflective tariff at our level as a subnational electricity market.

“Breaking this across the various tariff bands means that Band A will be paying N160 while other Bands B, C, D, and E are frozen.

“Band A, at N160 will help MainPower to manage the rate shock, and if the subsidy is removed, the savings will assist them in stabilising the tariff over a defined period of time. Nevertheless, at all times, the tariff will be cost reflective and will not require any state subsidy,” Okonkwo stated.

He noted, however, that the N160 Band A tariff could be difficult to sustain should the Federal Government remove the generation tariff subsidy currently being enjoyed by electricity consumers throughout the country, as tariffs would most likely rise beyond these new rates.

“But until then, it is only right that Ndi Enugu – Band A customers enjoy the reduced tariff effective August 1, 2025,” the Commission’s Chairman added.

Meanwhile, EERC also said it had put in place monitoring and evaluation systems and guidelines to ensure MainPower’s compliance with service commitments so that its customers do not pay more for less power.

“MainPower is obliged to publish daily on its website a rolling seven-day average daily hours of supply on each Bank A feeder no later than 9am of the next day.

“Where MainPower fails to deliver on the committed level of service on Band A feeder for two consecutive days, MainPower shall report this to the Commission within 24 hours.

“Where MainPower fails to meet the committed service level to a Band A feeder for seven consecutive days, the feeder shall be automatically downgraded to the recorded level of supply.

“The Commission is committed to working with industry developers, investors, customers and Stakeholders to develop and implement strategies and solutions to provide access and improve electricity services to all the citizens of the state, as this is a win for the establishment,” the Commission concluded.

PoliticsEx-governors’ Forum DG Dumps PDP, Says Party Hijacked By ‘self-serving’ Members by Ofunaofu(op): 6:04pm On Jul 20, 2025
Mr Maduabum added that the PDP had descended into chaos, internal betrayal, and systematic destruction by diverse forces.

CID Maduabum, the immediate past director general of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Mr Maduabum, a former two-time member of the House of Representatives, announced his defection in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

He attributed the alleged hijack of the PDP as the reason for his decision.

“After deep reflection, extensive consultations, and careful evaluation of the current political realities within the PDP, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect,” Mr Maduabum said.

While describing himself as a committed democrat, he said, “I have dedicated significant portions of my political life to building the PDP as a platform for democratic consolidation and national development.

“However, the soul of the party I once served with pride has been hijacked by self-serving, unscrupulous elements who are more interested in personal power grabs than in party discipline, internal democracy, or national interest. The PDP today is a shadow of its former self.”

Mr Maduabum added that the PDP had descended into chaos, internal betrayal, and systematic destruction by diverse forces without regard for the principles upon which the party was founded.

“Sadly, voices of reason are no longer welcome, and genuine reformers are vilified or silenced,” the politician said.

“I can no longer in good conscience remain in a house that has been stripped of its moral compass and overrun by opportunists.

“In light of this, I am proud to announce that I am joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — a party that now stands as the only credible democratic alternative for Nigeria,” he said.

He described ADC as an emerging beacon of hope for good governance, integrity, accountability, and inclusive politics.

Mr Maduabum said the ADC offered the opportunity for principled politics, genuine people-oriented leadership, and a platform for rebuilding the nation from the grassroots up.

He noted that the ADC coalition included progressive-minded people such as Peter Obi and others.

Mr Maduabum said he joined the ADC, not merely as a defector, but as a reformer committed to helping build a new political culture.

He said the time had come for all well-meaning Nigerians to take a stand against the decay in Nigeria’s political system.
