So here is how I see this story, old mutual friend that reached out to you two weeks ago didn't just reached out, I believe he/she was sent by your ex.
It could be that he just want to apologize for the way he behaved then and get to explain things to you on why what happen, did.

Honestly, alia has really been trying in the area of salary payments.
