The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended election in Enugu East Senatorial District.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu made this known at a media briefing on Friday in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, the election in the senatorial district earlier slated for Saturday, February 25, 2023, has been moved to March 11, 2023.
Yakubu said the postponement in the district which covers four local government areas became necessary with the murder of the Labour Party (LP)’s senatorial candidate for the district, Oyibo Chukwu.
He said the Labour Party reached out to the electoral body to convey its intention to provide a replacement and go ahead with the poll at the new date.
Chukwu and his personal assistant were assassinated on Wednesday when hoodlums attacked them and set their vehicle ablaze in the Eke-Otu Amechi-Awkunanaw area of Enugu.
The PDP in Benue South senatorial district has endorsed presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for Saturday’s presidential election.
This is contained in a statement by Paul Mumeh, media aide of former senate president David Mark on Thursday in Abuja.
The statement said the decision was taken after a meeting in Otukpo, the traditional headquarters of the Idoma people.
It said the decision by the party was based on the premise that their interest would be better served under an Abubakar presidency.
It explained that the party members distanced themselves from those campaigning for candidates of other political parties.
According to the statement, they said they could not be members of the PDP and be seen to be working for candidates of other political parties.
“They urged all party members not to be distracted by the antics of a few but should go all out to vote for candidates of the PDP in the February 25 and March 11 elections.
In the statement, Mr Mark urged PDP members to be faithful to the party because jumping from one party to the other would make no sense, adding that political parties are vehicles for achieving one’s political ambition and must be held sacrosanct by obeying the rules and regulations.
According to Mr Mark, politicians who jump from one party to another are people without conviction or do not know what they want.
The senator representing Benue South, Abba Moro, urged the party members to remain steadfast.
The senatorial district comprised the nine local government areas of the Idoma land.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo has urged voters in Oyo State to “vote for PDP from top to bottom” in the upcoming polls. Mr Makinde gave the advice in a newsletter shared on Thursday, ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections billed for February 25.

Mr Makinde’s call deviates from his previous stance not to support the election of Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. The governor, alongside four other governors in the PDP (popularly known as the G-5) has for months railed against Mr Abubakar and the party leadership over differences in the composition of the party’s presidential ticket and the headship of the PDP, which are being held by to the northerners.
Mr Makinde, who is also seeking a second term in office, has now apparently backtracked after he initially refused to support Mr Abubakar following his emergence as a candidate from the northern region at the party’s primary held in May.
In the newsletter obtained by Peoples Gazette on Thursday, the Oyo governor asked his supporters to encourage undecided voters to strictly choose his party, the PDP at the ballot.
“So, if you still have any undecided voters on your list, this is the time to call them up and help them decide to vote for the PDP from top to bottom in Oyo state.
“By next time I write you, we will, barring any electoral reruns, have a new President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Vote wisely, this Saturday, so we do not have a repeat of the pains and suffering we have experience in the last eight years,” the newsletter read in part.
Mr Makinde has been battling to regain the support of some Oyo electorates, especially party faithful who had been against his initial refusal to support the PDP presidential candidate.
The Oyo governor, alongside Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu, Samuel Ortom of Benue, and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia state had been demanding the resignation of the PDP’s national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, as a pre-condition to support Mr Abubakar’s presidential ambition.
On September 20, 2022, the aggrieved governors who later named themselves the ‘Integrity group’ met in Port Harcourt, Rivers capital, and announced their withdrawal from the presidential campaign council of Mr Abubakar.
Nicknamed ‘G5’, the governors were absent from the inauguration of Mr Abubakar’s campaign council on September 28.
The governors had argued that a northerner cannot be the PDP’s presidential flag bearer and the national chairman also hails from the same region.
They claimed that Mr Ayu had even before the primary promised to resign should a northerner from his region emerge as the presidential candidate of the PDP.
The All Progressives Congress has accused opposition parties of unfairly trolling its presidential standard-bearer Bola Tinubu. The APC claimed that its “renewed hope” message resonated well with Nigerians ahead of Saturday’s presidential election.
“We worked very hard to stay on issues. But the opposition elements constantly assailed Senator Bola Tinubu with ridiculous, unsubstantiated and often fabricated allegations,” said Dele Alake, special adviser on media and strategic communication to the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
“All in futile bid to derail our campaign, in spite of all the evil machinations of the opposition, we remained focused on our message of prosperity that will ride on the achievements of the current APC government. With strong determination by Tinubu and Shettima to improve on areas that require greater and better governance outcomes,” Mr Alake added while addressing a news conference on Wednesday in Abuja to round off the party’s presidential campaign.
He said the party’s grand rally in Lagos was a fitting conclusion to a presidential campaign that started on January 10, 2022.
From that moment, 14 months ago, he stated, Mr Tinubu began a “painstaking” and “arduous journey” of reaching out to a cross-section of the civil populace and constituency holders in Nigeria.
“This he did through a nationwide consultation ahead of his party primary. He met with former leaders, traditional rulers, religious leaders, party stakeholders and members across the country and intimated them about his vision, capabilities and readiness to serve our country,” Mr Alake explained.
According to him, the APC PCC and Mr Tinubu “redefined, set new tone and template for presidential campaign in Nigeria,” and “our campaign introduced townhall interactive sessions into this campaign to take our message directly to the people across various sectors and segments of the society.”
He added that the town hall sessions became specialised focus group sessions to connect with the people almost one-on-one.
“Beginning from mid-October, with his acceptance of the invitation by Northern leaders under the umbrella of the Arewa Joint Committee. Tinubu and Shettima conducted over 15 town hall meetings around the country,” Mr Alake told journalists. “They met with the organised private sector, youth groups, traders and market women, Labour Unions, Christian Association of Nigeria and other Christian bodies, Islamic groups and leaders.”

Osinbajo: Those Managing Nigeria’s Oil Resources Must Account For Crude Oil Theft Business
He said oil theft and sabotage assets are a clear and present danger to the economy and national security.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has declared that tackling crude oil theft and sabotage remains a major concern of the Federal Government saying those in charge must be accountable because, besides economic consequences, institutional and personal reputations are at stake.
Speaking Tuesday in Abuja as a Special Guest at a Stakeholders Conference on Oil Theft and Losses in Nigeria, Osinbajo stressed that so grievous a crime cannot simply be a subject of summitry; “people must do their jobs and if they are unable to do them, then there must be an accounting for such failures. Institutional and personal reputations are at stake.”
He expressed concern that “oil theft and sabotage of oil and gas assets are a clear and present danger to our economy and national security.
Not only do they pose a serious threat to oil exploration and our energy economy, but they also impact negatively on revenue accruals to the Federation and the business prospects of investors in the oil sector.”
Noting that the Federal Government prioritised the development of the Niger Delta, as well as the protection of oil assets, the Vice President emphasized that the theft of crude oil and the accompanying attacks on our energy infrastructure, especially in the Niger Delta, have since the inception of the present administration, been of utmost concern.
Against the backdrop of huge production cuts and revenue losses, Osinbajo highlighted the work done by the National Economic Council, which he chairs.
According to him, the Council set up an Ad-hoc Committee to ascertain the magnitude of oil theft and losses in Nigeria and recommended appropriate remedial measures.
His words: “Most of the recommendations of the Ad-hoc Committee informed the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021 and are being implemented. Even so, acts of vandalism of oil and gas infrastructure, oil theft as well as low production yields are still being reported in damaging and unacceptable proportions”.
He noted that President Buhari had enacted the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021 aimed at revitalizing the oil and gas industry.
“Among other things, the Act stipulates elaborate provisions to accommodate the needs of the Host Communities in the oil and gas producing areas. The aim of these provisions is to assuage their sensibilities, give them a sense of belonging and foster unity of purpose with oil companies for the mutual benefit of all,” he explained.
Speaking on the theme: ‘Protecting Petroleum Industry Assets for Improved Economy’, the Vice President said “this administration is confronting these acts of economic terrorism on multiple fronts and with a range of tools.
“We have invested significantly in scaling up our maritime security architecture. In June 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari flagged off the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure Project otherwise known as the Deep Blue Project – a collaborative multiagency effort involving the armed forces, the police and the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Maritime Administration & Safety Agency (NIMASA), jointly led by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defence.
“The project provides air, naval and land assets for surveillance, policing, and search and rescue operations in our coastal waters and our exclusive economic zones”.
Osinbajo also recalled that he was at the Navy Headquarters “where I commissioned Falcon Eye, a maritime surveillance facility that networks sensors installed along our nation’s coastline. It is designed to provide actionable intelligence in real-time on maritime security threats and enable the swift and preemptive interdiction of criminals.
“Taken together, these two initiatives are huge investments in making our waters safe for energy commerce and inhospitable for the criminals that violate our vital economic interests”.
Apart from scaling up the nation’s maritime security architecture, Osinbajo also highlighted the efforts of the administration through its New Vision for the Niger Delta initiative.
The Vice President recalled how the country’s oil installations were sabotaged by militant groups within a year of the Buhari Administration being in office.
He observed that given the importance of oil and gas for federation revenues and export earnings, “it was no surprise that the economy went into recession in 2016 for the first time in twenty years with the economy contracting by -1.6 percent that year. It was clear to the government at the time that to speedily exit the recession, we needed to ensure that oil production went back to its over 2 million barrels-a-day levels.”
Osinbajo further recalled that in 2017, on the directive of the President, he undertook “a tour of all oil producing states especially in the Niger Delta to engage with stakeholders and get a measure of the grievances that formed the backdrop to the sabotage of the oil installations.”
Following the Vice President’s tour of the region, the Buhari administration’s New Vision for the Niger Delta was developed in 2017, as a forthright partnership between the Federal Government, State Governments, Private Sector and Local Communities, through which the people of the region can maximally benefit from the wealth of their land.
“As a result of those engagements and based on the feedback we had received from the communities, we were able to draw up the New Vision for the Niger Delta which helped to calm the situation and stem the attacks on oil facilities. These efforts led to significant success”.
According to the 2018 Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Annual Report, the Vice President said crude oil production at the time went back up to an estimated daily average production of 2.12million barrels per day. But he added that this upward trend was upended later by the COVID-19 crisis.
Osinbajo noted that one of the pivots of the New Vision initiative was the establishment of modular refineries to curb illegal artisanal refining in the region and create employment opportunities for the region’s youths.
According to him, following the recommendation by an Ad-hoc Committee of the National Economic Council, it was determined that “creating employment opportunities for the youths of the oil-producing communities and making petroleum products available in these communities will go a long way to reduce hardship and criminality in the region.”
“One of the ideas we pursued under the New Vision for the Niger Delta was licensing modular refineries to discourage illegal artisanal refining. The refineries were designed to be privately owned but with a small percentage of shares owned by the host communities. It was hoped that this could draw in the illegal refiners and thus shut down one of the most potent sources of sabotage of oil assets especially the destruction of pipelines.”
The Vice President then assured that the Buhari administration remains committed to “captaining the ship of governance to the very last hour,” noting that “we committed to leaving our best actions, thoughts and ideas for use of the next administration and the benefit of our nation.”
LIVERPOOL have it all to do is they take on Real Madrid in their Champions League last-16 second leg.

A win for Real would make it their fourth consecutive success over Liverpool in the competition, following the 2018 final, 2021 quarter-finals and the 2022 final.
Liverpool, however, have made a habit of mustering miraculous comebacks in the Champions League.
And they'll be full of belief that they can do it all again as they travel to the Bernabeu.
The match will get underway at 8pm UK time. The Santiago Bernabeu will play host.
Team news Real Madrid are going to be without David Alaba and Ferland Mendy in the home leg.
But Real will still be close to a full strength side, with Vinicius Jr and Karim Benzema both set to star up front for Los Blancos.
Liverpool will have to make do without Thiago Alcantara and Luis Duiz still, but they do have Ibrahim Konate back for the second leg.
Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are also set to start alongside Mohamed Salah in Liverpool's usual three-pronged attack.
PRESS RELEASE BY THE APC PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN COUNCIL:
WE REJECT THE APPOINTMENT OF NAJA’ATU BALA MUHAMMAD AS A NORTHWEST COORDINATOR OF THE POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION
We are deeply shocked and appalled to read a release by the Police Service Commission appointing one of its most partisan members, Naja’atu Bala Muhammad as a NorthWest coordinator of the Presidential Election. In that role, she is expected to move about freely, supervising the conduct of Police Officers during the elections.
With the well-documented activities, actions and vitriols of Naja’atu in the last few weeks against our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (after being shown the door out of the APC as a mole) we venture to say that this appointment is not only callous, it is insensitive, openly confrontational and consequently unacceptable by the Tinubu/SHETTIMA Presidential Campaign Council. Coming at a time when President Muhammadu Buhari is constantly assuring and reassuring the world of free, fair and credible elections, it confirms our worst fears that there are functionaries of government that are actively working with the opposition to thwart the avowed commitment of Mr. President.
We need not emphasise that the role given to NAJA’ATU requires a honest and unbiased individual who will discharge the duties diligently and without reproach. The nation will not get that from NAJA’ATU.
We therefore demand for the IMMEDIATE withdrawal of the name of NAJA’ATU Bala Muhammad as a coordinator of the Police Service Commission for the NorthWest or any region for that matter. She has an inalienable right to continue to campaign for any candidate of her choice and to vote for that candidate, but she cannot be given a garment to wear at this time that is meant only for neutrals.
Thank you.
