PoliticsRe: Shaibu: Tinubu Is Hopelessness Renewed To Move Nigeria From Frying Pan To Fire by ogododo(op): 1:09pm On Feb 20, 2023
XAUBulls:
This creep called Phrank Shuaibu's comments are highly criminally defamatory and filled with very obvious lies.

Ambode was rejected by the entire members of APC in Lagos for the 2nd term for deviating from the
Lagos State long-term master plan, partly because Lagos was looking filthy with refuse, and more. The discontinuation of the use of PSP operators by Ambode left Lagos dirty and everyone in Lagos State was complaining angrily.

Asiwaju Tinubu did NOT unilateraly prevent Ambode for a 2nd term. Ambode did well in some areas but messed up a bit in his desire to be futuristic in his modern waste management program which ended up leaving filth around
Lagos due to logistics issues.

Ambode later admitted that he made mistakes and has learned from them as a former Governor of Lagos. Regardless, Ambode will never be forgotten for his dynamism. He just made some errors.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is doing well now with massive projects already delivered from 2022 to 2023 and more will come.

Tinubu also spoke very impressively as a technocrat (who worked as a top shot accountant and treasurer with Mobil Nigeria and top U.S.-based consulting firms) during the NESG meeting with the private sector in February 2023 that I saw on YouTube.

From the NESG YouTube comments section and elsewhere online and offline, a lot of folks praised
Tinubu and regreted saying bad things about him based on the fake news they had read online.

Tinubu travels many times every year to the U.S. He would have been arrested many years ago by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency if he is a drug baron and jailed since the early 1990s because the U.S. has zero tolerance for drug barons and drug pushers. It is some Obi supporters and PDP supporters that are desperately spreading the criminal and defamatory fake news online and offline, and they deserve to be charged to court for criminal defamation and punished.

Just vote your choice and STOP the criminal defamation of Tinubu and others based on fake news.

Even the B.B.C Disinformation team confirmed that Shetima is NOT a BHaram sponsor and that the picture of him eating with some people was with Fulani people and not BH members yet some idiots are still spreading the fake news here on NL. Atiku and Obi are friends of Asiwaju Tinubu and will remain so after the elections. Remember that.
Una know sey we dey Lagos. We see as it happened.

HealthNigeria Records 2,445 Preventable Deaths Daily – Report by ogododo(op): 7:34am On Feb 20, 2023
At least 2,445 women and children die every day from preventable causes in Nigeria, according to data from the Federal Ministry of Health on the National Maternal and Child Health.

The data obtained by our correspondent revealed that 70 per cent of the deaths are preventable.

According to the data, “145 women die every day due to preventable pregnancy-related causes in Nigeria.

“2,300 children under five years of age die every day from preventable causes in Nigeria.

“As much as 70 per cent of the causes of these deaths are preventable.”

Going by this figure, about 892,425 women and children under the age of five die every year from preventable causes in Nigeria.
Sadauki, told our correspondent that there was a need for increased awareness in the communities to reduce maternal deaths in the country.

He said, “The health-seeking behaviour of our mothers needs to be changed. Also, we need fully-equipped and fully-staffed health facilities with appropriate technology.

“There should be consumables available and affordable to manage complications during delivery.”

Speaking at the Northern Traditional Leaders’ Committee on Primary Health Care Development Delivery Review Meeting in Abuja, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, said that Nigeria had not fared well in maternal and child health care.

He said, “The poor health indices for which Nigeria has not fared comfortably are the maternal and child mortality and morbidity, they are not very good, but these are generated largely in the rural areas where there is no access to any form of health care, and we need to do more to get the incoming administration not to deviate and philanthropists to continue to invest in primary health care.

“We have promises of funding from the Global Fund to support primary health care development.”

PoliticsShaibu: Tinubu Is Hopelessness Renewed To Move Nigeria From Frying Pan To Fire by ogododo(op): 4:12pm On Feb 19, 2023
The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has called on Nigerians not to elect. Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as doing so will represent a transition from frying pan to fire.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications Mr. Phrank Shaibu, the PDP candidate, said Nigerians must not be deceived by Tinubu’s message of renewed hope as it is “hopelessness in disguise”.

Shaibu stated, “It is one week to the election, and expectedly, campaigns have reached fever pitch. But amid the excitement and tension, voters must guard their hearts jealously as the ruling APC will try to use every subterfuge and stratagem in its manual to deceive them once more. These last days are similar to the end time predicted in the Holy books.

He asked Tinubu to make up his mind on whether he was running on Buhari’s legacy or running against it so as not to deceive innocent voters.

Shaibu added, “Tinubu says the petrol scarcity and the naira shortage are aimed at scuttling his ambition. Later, he and his acolytes said they were only voicing out against the policy out of sheer concern for the masses. These are people who never muttered a word when students spent 10 months at home in 2020 and eight months at home in 2022 due to unprecedented university lecturers’ strike.

Tinubu has been campaigning like a drug Lord from Paranquuilla, Columbia. He has been very pugnacious, believing that his bullion vans stashed with old Naira notes can deliver the votes to him.”

“Someone needs to tell Tinubu and his band of APC governors to please give up this irritating ostentatious performance of moral propriety. They are not angry about the naira redesign because they love the masses. They are only angry that their plan to unleash bullion vans on poor Nigerians has been thwarted.”

Shaibu said should Tinubu become the president of Nigeria, he will turn the country into his personal fiefdom and a one party state by muzzling the opposition as he had done in Lagos since 1999.

He added that Tinubu would also turn the National Assembly into his foot stool and orchestrate the fall of the 4th Republic.

Shaibu added, “Tinubu has turned Lagos State into his personal fiefdom by arrogating all powers to himself so much so that even the current Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, publicly refers to him as ‘my principal’, clear evidence that Tinubu is far above the constitutionally recognised authority in the state.

“To keep governors in check, he buys the loyalty of all 40 members of the Lagos State House of Assembly who openly sing the Tinubu anthem in the hallowed chamber. It is through the instrumentality of the House that he successfully impeached two of his deputy governors – Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele and Femi Pedro. It was also through this subservient House that Tinubu passed the obnoxious governors’ pension law that would see him earn more allowances than a former president.

“He has also infiltrated and bastardised every facet of Lagos society, including transport unions who openly extort money from transporters and shop owners with impunity because they have pledged their loyalty to him. He appointed his daughter, Folasade, as the Iyaloja-General of Lagos markets, giving her enormous powers to impose levies and shut down markets from all markets in the state. Traders who are not members of the ruling party are victimised.

“A firm reportedly owned by him, Alpha Beta Consulting, has for the last 20 years, maintained exclusive rights to generate taxes on behalf of the Lagos State Government. This is how he has kept an entire state under his vice-grip, a modern-day Mafia boss. He hopes to impose a one-party system in Nigeria and plans to rule as a dictator with a subservient national assembly. God forbid BAT thing.”

Shaibu said Tinubu’s actions had shown that he had no respect for President Buhari or his office.

He said that in 2018, President Buhari and some northern governors personally appealed to Tinubu to let Governor Akinwunmi Ambode contest a second term, but Tinubu ignored their entreaties thereby publicly embarrassing the President.

Shaibu added, “In 2018, Tinubu orchestrated the removal of respected former Edo State Governor John Oyegun and ensured that his servile lackey, Adams Oshiomhole, emerged as the national chairman of the APC. Through Oshiomhole, he undermined several governors in their states and went on to suspend them including Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State who described Tinubu as ‘Capo Di Tutti’, a term of Italian origin often used to describe the overall boss within a mafia family or group.

“After undermining Amosun, Tinubu ensured that Dapo Abiodun emerged governor. He would later scornfully describe Governor Abiodun as ‘eleyi’, meaning ‘this thing’ just because the governor decided to back the more charismatic Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo for President.

“In Lagos State, Tinubu publicly ridiculed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, treating him like a houseboy. He asked Ambode to drop his ambition for a second term despite his many achievements in the state. When northern governors and even President Buhari pleaded with Tinubu to let the young man continue in office, Tinubu rejected their entreaties, embarrassing the president in the process.

“On the day of the APC primary, those who planned on voting for Ambode were prevented from doing so as seen in many viral videos. In fact, Clement Ebri, who had been detailed to supervise the exercise, clearly stated that there was no primary in Lagos until he was forced to recant.

“Tinubu’s overbearing nature put him on a collision course with many governors, notably Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State, who even offered to help the people of Lagos State to put an end to godfatherism. Today, el-Rufai has become Tinubu’s man Friday all because he has been promised the position of Chief of Staff. This is not the kind of man that should lead Nigeria.”

Shaibu also questioned Tinubu’s mental capacity to lead Nigeria amid the gaffes and slips at the many APC rallies.

He said Nigeria is facing monumental challenges and needs a focused leader, not a man who constantly needs his handlers to explain his unintelligible message to Nigerians.

Shaibu stated, “Tinubu is unfit to rule a country much less a country like Nigeria, which is in a desperate state. Nigeria needs a president who has the mental capacity to get the job done. This is a man whose cognitive capabilities remain in doubt, hence his refusal to attend any debates or town halls, but only attends his own “different town hall,” where he controls the environment. He can hardly answer questions by himself.

“Tinubu’s reason for not attending debates is obvious even to the feeble minded. Should he attend a presidential debate, how will he be able to answer questions on what primary and secondary schools he attended and why he remains the only candidate in the history of Nigeria not to reveal it in his form CF001? How will he respond to questions about his family lineage or the lingering question of how he became a bagman for a drug cartel, forfeited $460,000 to American authorities, and the moral implications for the nation

“His gaffes at rallies and town halls also put his mental capacity to question. Muttering some unintelligible words at a town hall in Owerri last November, Tinubu stated, ‘This is a town hall different from Balabu blu blu, bulaaba’.

“He plans to recruit 50 million youths in the Nigerian Army as a means of tackling unemployment, and he believes Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have expiry dates. These are Tinubu’s words, not mine. He is already a self-written joke and will make Nigeria a laughing stock among the comity of nations if he is allowed to lead this great country.”

The group’s director, Ishaq Akintola, made the appeal in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

He lamented that Nigerians had faced starvation and hardship due to the policy, leading to psychological trauma.

Mr Akintola called on the presidency to call the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to order without further delay.

“It is obvious that this institution has failed to effectively distribute the new notes as well as monitor its disbursement to members of the public.

“Apart from this, Mr President must find a way of abiding by the decision of the Supreme Court, which earlier ruled that the old and new currencies should run parri passu,” he said.

He also appealed to Nigerians to exercise patience.

“This cup will pass. Any resort to violence will only cause more harm to the poor masses and struggling businessmen and women,” he said.

He called on religious leaders to intensify prayers for the nation.

“Prayer points should include peaceful 2023 elections, smooth transition, political stability and economic buoyancy for our dear country, Nigeria,” he said.

PoliticsRiots Break Out In Lagos As Tinubu, Governors Ramp Up Confrontation With Buhari by ogododo(op): 11:30am On Feb 17, 2023
There is gunfire and mayhem across Lagos Friday morning, with reports that an unspecified number of casualties are already recorded as the police say they are bringing the situation under control.

This is coming amid APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu and some state governors’ opposition to President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to obey the Supreme Court’s order to allow old naira notes to be used as legal tender concurrently with the new notes. Governors Nasir El-Rufai, Bello Matawalle, Yahaya Bello and Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, among others. The governors are urging their citizens to disregard Mr Buhari’s and CBN’s directive.

Peoples Gazette’s checks revealed chaos at Mile 12, Iyana Iba, Ikorodu and Agege, with commuters left stranded at the bus stops and highways.

There was reported pandemonium in Mile 12 market, along Ikorodu road, on Friday as traders allegedly insisted on new naira notes before they could transact business in the market.

Gunfire was also reported at Ketu and Ojo, as a video seen online showed commuters scampering for safety after shots were fired.

Witnesses claimed that scarcity of the new naira notes and its attendant economic hardship was the major cause of the violence across the state on Friday.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the police spokesperson in Lagos, said in a tweet that security operatives were deployed to manage the situation in Mile 12 and Ojota.

“It is true. Our men are there. Reinforcement units have been deployed. Stay safe out there as we closely monitor and manage the situation,” he said.

He added that officials have intervened and motorists can now move freely to their destinations.

“Free movement of vehicles and people fully restored. Our officers and men are still on the ground to prevent any breakdown of law and order,” Mr Hundeyin said in a tweet on Friday.

PoliticsWhy I Can’t Do Lagos’ Transformation Agenda Nationwide — Tinubu by ogododo(op): 9:52am On Feb 17, 2023
The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, has said it will be difficult to replicate his transformative agenda in Lagos across Nigeria owing to the complexity of the country.

The former governor of Lagos State also stated that he would allow for power devolution to ensure the smooth operation of government.

Tinubu made this known in an opinion piece that he published in The Economist on Wednesday.

“We cannot simply replicate Lagos’ transformation nationwide. Nigeria is complex and variegated. Recognising the strengths of each section of the country and providing the foundations on which they can all thrive is the path to economic growth. I know what can be achieved when the Federal Government allows adequate space for regional differences, so I want to devolve more powers to the states. They should have greater authority to provide services and infrastructure projects, as well as more control over law enforcement,” Tinubu stated, while recounting his achievements as a two-term governor of Lagos.

Speaking further, Tinubu said the country’s over-dependence on oil had distorted its development.

“Over-reliance on oil has distorted Nigeria’s development. A country of over 200 million people cannot hinge its development on a single commodity. We must focus on industrialisation and technological innovation, especially since Nigeria is already the top African destination for startup funding,” he said.

The APC candidate also reiterated his stance for the removal of fuel subsidy, which, according to him, is “harmful.”

He further stated, “We will end the harmful fuel subsidy, estimated to have cost $7.5bn in the first half of 2023. The funds will be more productively used in joint investments with the private sector to create jobs in infrastructure, health care, education, and agriculture.

“Nigeria has one of the world’s lowest tax to GDP ratios. We need not increase rates, but improve compliance by overhauling the system and deploying information technology to boost efficiency. Tied with effective delivery of public services and infrastructure, a virtuous cycle of buy-in from businesses and citizens will strengthen the social contract and place federal revenues on a more sustainable footing.”

PoliticsRe: New Naira Notes: FG Has Disregard For Supreme Court — Gbajabiamila by ogododo: 9:15pm On Feb 16, 2023
Deltafirstson:
says policy implementation poor
…adds it’s unclear what interest is being served
By Levinus Nwabughiogu-Abuja
The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila on Thursday faulted the decision of the Federal Government to disregard the Supreme Court order on the issue of currency swap.

It will be recalled that the apex court had last week given an order for the old 1000, 500 and 200 Naira notes to remain legal tender pending the determination of a case brought before it by some state governors.
On Wednesday, the apex court also reiterated its order and adjourned the matter to February 22.
On Thursday morning, President Muhammadu Buhari, in a nationwide broadcast, said he had instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reintroduce the old N200 note until April 10, 2023, while the old N1000 and N500 have stopped being legal tender.
Reacting in a statement he personally signed in Abuja on Thursday, Gbajabiamila said though the president’s directive was a step in the right direction, the Federal Government could not afford situations that “suggest a wanton disregard for the rule of law.”
“This morning, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, announced that he has authorized the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to reintroduce the old N200 notes into circulation, pending when the Bank can make sufficient amounts of the new currency available. This is a step in the right direction, and I hope it helps curb Nigerians’ suffering.
“However, the decision still falls short of the order of the Supreme Court that the old currencies remain legal tender pending the adjudication of a pending suit brought by state governments on the legality of the policy and its implementation.
“It is not to the benefit of our country for the Federal Government to act in ways that suggest a wanton disregard for the rule of law. It will be better for us to strictly adhere to the court’s order in this matter pending the adjudication of the substantive suit,” he said.
Gbajabiamila however urged the citizens to “bear this moment with equanimity.”
He also urged the people to desist from actions capable of causing the break down of law and order.
“For the sake of our country, we must work together to resist actions that escalate tensions and endanger our democracy at this crucial moment of national awakening and rebirth.
“In all things, let the well-being of our fellow citizens and the survival of our nation be foremost in our hearts and guide all the decisions we make in this historic moment”, the speaker said.
Bemoaning the current situation in the country, Gbajabiamila added that “citizens and visitors are experiencing grave and unnecessary hardship across our country. They spend hours and days queuing at banks and teller machines to receive stipends of their own money to afford life’s necessities.
“This situation is a consequence of the flawed implementation of the naira redesign policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). It is also the result of decisions made by the Central Bank’s Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, to refuse counsel, be guided by precedent or abide by the decisions of superior courts.”
He said Section 20(3) of the CBN Act, 2007 provided the statutory authority for the apex bank to initiate and implement policies for the recall of Nigerian currency, stressing that based on the provisions of the law, there were 3 conditions precedent for the CBN to recall existing Naira notes.
“The first is that the permission of the President must be obtained, and the second is that reasonable notice shall be given. The third is that the Central Bank of Nigeria shall pay the face value of the recalled currency upon receipt.
“Whereas reasonable people may disagree as to whether sufficient notice was given for the implementation of this policy, it is evident that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has failed woefully in its statutory obligation to pay the face value of the recalled currency in the form that is useful to the citizens whose current suffering could have been avoided.
“The current scarcity of cash is happening because the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) did not sufficiently replace the old currency it pulled out of circulation across the country. This created an artificial scarcity that put significant additional pressure on the already epileptic electronic banking channels, resulting in a near-complete collapse of trade in the country.
“Businesses cannot operate because neither they nor their customers have access to cash, and electronic banking platforms appear to have uniformly collapsed. It is unclear what interest is served by persisting in this erroneous course towards an unfolding economic disaster that the country cannot afford. The ongoing devastation of livelihoods is bound to have consequences long after this moment has passed.
“It is disheartening that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has resolutely refused to admit error and change course in the face of mounting evidence that the implementation of this policy has been a devastating failure.
“It is deeply troubling that neither the intervention of the National Council of State nor an order of the Supreme Court is sufficient to cause the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to review the decisions that have brought us to this entirely avoidable moment”, Gbajabiamila said.

PoliticsDoubts Swirl Over 2023 General Elections - Punch Editorial by ogododo(op): 11:02am On Feb 15, 2023
OMINOUS clouds are hovering over Nigeria where the increasing anxiety over the 2023 general elections has conflated with social and economic turmoil. The fear of an implosion, for long simmering just beneath the surface, is rising again. Pervasive insecurity, pre-election violence and the prolonged petrol and new naira banknotes scarcity, and lately conspiracy theories, are threatening to derail the polls. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), must fulfil his promise to ensure peaceful, fair, and credible elections.

With the Presidential/National Assembly polls just 10 days away, repeated assurances by the Independent National Electoral Commission are hardly comforting. In December, INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, raised the alarm that if the attacks continued, balloting might not hold in many areas. This fear was reinforced on Monday when he announced that polling would not hold in 240 polling units spread across 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory because of insecurity, leaving 176,606 PUs.

In the three years to December 2022, there have been 50 recorded attacks on INEC facilities where vital equipment and assets were vandalised or burnt. More are being perpetrated, especially in the South-East, deepening doubts on the polls.

In response to the ensuing conspiracy theories, the Nigerian Army issued a statement denying that it was plotting a coup or planning to scuttle the polls. Nothing should be taken for granted, considering Nigeria’s ugly past of military incursion in politics. The military should probe the allegations swiftly.

A former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Yakubu’s predecessor at INEC, Attahiru Jega, and a host of other stakeholders are also expressing concerns over the polls. In addition, there are allegations of a plan to emplace an interim government contraption if the elections are inconclusive, postponed or derailed. These are perilous scenarios that should never come to pass.

Rightly, Jega identified the main villains in Nigeria’s arrested development: politicians. “Their (politicians) mindset is to achieve victory at all costs; to win elections deploying ‘all means necessary;’ seeing electoral contests as a ‘do-or-die’ affair,” he said. “As they have done since 1999, they have continued to do, and are likely to do in 2023. As their impunity has remained unchecked, so have their criminal and fraudulent predispositions increased. This may constitute the major challenge to the 2023 general elections.” This assessment is accurate; Nigeria’s current crop of politicians is irredeemably irresponsible.

Their deployment of violence threatens democracy and the fragile union. Yakubu reiterated this recently saying, “Violence makes deployment for elections difficult, particularly, where some of the attacks are targeted at INEC facilities, the electoral process and participants.”

Obasanjo, president between 1999 and 2007, said, “I have been in Togo, Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire from the beginning of the week; and they are as concerned about what happens in Nigeria as every Nigerian should be.”

The conspiracy theories flying around have been stirred by the prolonged petrol scarcity and the chaotic naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Harrowing queues at banks of anxious customers seeking the new naira banknotes underscore the monumental mismanagement of an otherwise routine exercise by the Godwin Emefiele-led CBN. Petrol scarcity and the attendant queues have persisted for several weeks with slight improvement noticed in Lagos and Abuja only. Potentially, the two occurrences combined with insecurity could disrupt the polls.

Buhari should for once, take full charge and immediately end these national embarrassments. He should mobilise all the security and administrative resources to ensure credible elections. The state governors should drop their shameful preoccupation with partisan skirmishing and self-interest and join hands with the Federal Government to resolve the current challenges.

The 2023 elections are like no other since 1999. The federal and state governments should secure the country to ensure its success. The violence is pervasive, not sparing even security agents; travelling is hazardous and violence is ever close by as many are kidnapped in or outside their homes. The South-East is under siege from killers masquerading as separatist agitators who have vowed to prevent elections from holding in that region.

Nigeria should end the cycle of violence and threats to elections. Since the Boko Haram Islamic insurgency began in 2009, general elections in 2011, 2015 and 2019 have faced disruptions. In 2015, terrorist attacks – mainly in the North-East – forced INEC to shift the polls by six weeks. In 2011 and 2019, INEC had also shifted the schedules by one week over logistics failures. The Human Rights Watch said over 800 people died in the three days of post-election rioting that engulfed 12 Northern states after Goodluck Jonathan defeated Buhari in 2015 for the Presidency.

Nigeria lost at least 8,058 lives to non-state actors in 2022, including 202 military personnel, 186 police officers, 154 vigilantes, 14 security guards and 17 others, according to the Nigeria Security Tracker, a project of the Council on Foreign Relations. Thousands of others were kidnapped, and ransom calculated at N13.66 billion paid out to bandits, terrorists and kidnappers between July 2011 and July 2022, according to tabulation by The PUNCH.

Undeniably, Nigeria is a failing state. In the annual Fragile States Index conducted by Washington DC-based The Fund for Peace, out of 120, it scored an average of 99.45 index points between 2007 and 2022. Its best was 95.6 points in 2007; it came in at 103.5 points in 2016 for its worst score. It was No.16 with a score of 97.20 points in 2022, in company with Ethiopia, Mali and Zimbabwe.

Squarely, Nigerian politicians are to blame; greedy, selfish and unscrupulous, they operate with unbridled impunity. They refuse to learn from past mistakes and cannot be trusted with a basic task of holding credible elections.

Such behaviour has cost the country dearly. Political rascality bungled the first federal elections in 1964 after Independence. Similar criminality in the defunct Western Region elections in 1965 led to a conflagration that eventually crashed the First Republic and facilitated the military’s hijack of power in 1966. Politicians also killed the Second Republic (1979-83) through massive rigging of the 1983 elections by the ruling party, facilitating yet again, another military usurpation. Ironically, the 1993 presidential election, adjudged to be the country’s freest, that was to usher in the Third Republic was criminally annulled by the military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida.

The Fourth Republic must not fail as the benefits of democracy far outstrip regimented leadership. After spending long periods under dictatorships, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia and Croatia are now stable democracies. Nigeria’s atrocious politics should give way to public service-minded upright citizens to stabilise the country, and end the culture of ‘do or die’ electoral practices.

As politicians continue to mess up every aspect of national life, it is left to the people to take their own destiny in their own hands by refusing to be cajoled on February 25 and March 11 (governorship and state assembly elections). They should make the right choices, eschewing financial inducement, narrow ethnic sentiments and falsehood.

Buhari should neutralise all the man-made hurdles of petrol and naira scarcity. He should mobilise the security system immediately to counter the Islamic insurgency, banditry and the violent criminals spreading disorder and bloodshed across the land.

INEC must perfect its system before the polls, guarding against saboteurs and external influence and ensure the integrity of Nigeria’s elections. This will deepen democracy, promote stability and prevent the troubling practice of the courts determining election winners instead of voters.
