Adesina disclosed this in an article titled, ‘FOR PMB, IT’S NIGERIA AND NOTHING ELSE’ shared on his official Facebook page on Thursday. Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity says that there were irregularities in the just concluded Saturday elections. Adesina disclosed this in an article titled, ‘FOR PMB, IT’S NIGERIA AND NOTHING ELSE’ shared on his official Facebook page on Thursday. Electoral Body, INEC had declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the winner of the February 25 presidential election and subsequently the president-elect. The former Lagos governor won with 8,794,726 votes, nearly two million more votes than his fiercest challengers, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 6,984,520 and Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi, who got 6,101,533. The total votes cast were 24,965,218, out of which 939,278 were rejected votes. However, PDP and LP had called for the cancellation of the presidential election over allegations that INEC did not comply with the law in the collation and announcement of results. The PDP and LP first made their positions known at a Tuesday press conference attended by their vice-presidential candidates, Ifeanyi Okowa and Datti Baba-Ahmed respectively. “The election was a sham, and never free and fair,” said Okowa of the PDP, a position corroborated by the LP’s vice-presidential candidate. Their main grouse is that INEC failed to upload the results of elections in the over 170,000 polling units onto a central server (IReV) as required by law. That step should have been done before the collation and announcement of results, they said. In his article, Adesina admitted irregularities in the electioneering process but said his principal, President Buhari was never part of any ‘mago-mago’ He said, “The first phase of the 2023 elections has been held, to elect a new President, and National Assembly members. Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been declared the winner and issued a Certificate of Return. Was it a perfect election? Not so. Electronic transmission of results failed, due to technical glitches, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had to resort to manual collation. “Joseph Stalin, the Soviet Union tyrant had been credited with saying: ‘Those who cast the votes decide nothing. Those who count the votes decide everything.’ But one thing is definite about President Buhari. He would never be part of any mago-mago or wuruwuru. Just give him unimpeachable evidence of underhand dealings, and he throws you away like a bad habit. “The President’s first loyalty is to the country. Unflinching. Unassailable. Despite being a loyal party man, and committed to the candidate of his party, whom he went round the country campaigning for, he told Nigerians several times: vote for the candidate of your choice across the parties. That’s the heart of a father, a man beyond partisan considerations, as a democratically elected President. “To prove cynics and septics wrong, the man displayed his ballot paper last Saturday, after voting for APC candidates. Some lawyers have criticized the action, saying it runs contrary to electoral laws. But we know why the President did it. To shut the mouths of conspiracy theorists, who had been trying to establish that he was against the candidate of his party. “There are contentions about the declared results. Yes, it is part of good electoral practices that those who have issues should be listened to. Even the President himself challenged election results up to Supreme Court three times. When he was ruled out the third time, he said “God dey.” And God eventually showed up. The Almighty is still at work in Nigeria. “President Buhari has provided a level playing field for all contestants in the election. Any other contrary thing was not at his instance or instigation. Couldn’t have been. He remains the authentic Nigerian hero, a stickler for integrity, accountability and rectitude.” https://saharareporters.com/2023/03/03/2023-election-produced-tinubu-president-elect-not-perfect-buharis-aide-femi-adesina |

Independent Foreign Observers Mission in Nigeria has commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the conduct of the February 25 presidential and federal parliamentary polls. The mission, which gave the commendation in its preliminary report on Tuesday’s just-concluded election in Abuja, described the poll as peaceful and transparent. David Furnad of the United States read the report. “The presidential elections in Nigeria recorded a high turnout of voters nationwide. It can also be regarded as one of the most transparent elections in the country’s history, with the significant candidates recording victories and defeats,” stated Mr Furnad. “The presidential election witnessed a comparatively large turnout of voters in the various geopolitical zones compared to other general elections in the country.” He added, “The South-West and the South-East zones witnessed the highest number of voter turnout, with eligible voters demonstrating an uncommon level of patience to exercise their franchise.” Mr Furnad noted that INEC deployed sensitive and non-sensitive materials to voting points on time, even though the report recorded some delays in some areas, which it said did not deter voters from performing their civic duties. He stressed, “There were minimal incidences of vote buying across the country. The reason adduced is that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) randomly visited polling units unannounced to arrest anyone involved in such acts. The country’s recent redesign of currency reduced vote buying to the barest minimum.” The mission praised some political parties and their candidates for honouring the Peace Accord and not inciting their supporters. Present at the presentation of the report were Rudolf Elmendorp, Stuart Young, Stuart Dyer, Francois DeRobaix and Jeffrey Fry. The All Progressives Congress and its presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, commenced a legal battle to prevent moves by opposition parties to halt the ongoing collation of Saturday’s presidential election results. The candidate and his party filed a suit to restrain the Labour Party and the People’s Democratic Party preventing the continuous announcement and collation of results of the poll. The suit was marked FHC/KN/CS/43/2023 and filed before the Federal High Court in Kano. The Action Alliance and the Independent National Electoral Commission were joined as defendants while the APC vice presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima, was also listed as a plaintiff. According to Daily Trust, the plaintiffs in a motion on notice filed alongside the originating summons asked the court to make the order restraining the defendants from stopping the collation and announcement of the results. They argued that “damages will not adequately compensate for the injury that may be occasioned on the Plaintiffs if by the Defendants stop the collation of the result.” Details later… https://punchng.com/breaking-results-collation-tinubu-approaches-court-to-stop-lp-pdp-moves/ |

The Independent National Electoral Commission, on Tuesday, declared the Zamfara Central senatorial district election inconclusive. The INEC Returning Officer of the senatorial district, Prof. Ahmad Galadima, said the cancellation affected not less than 74 polling units from 19 registration areas of Bungude, Gusau and Tsafe. According to him, the total number of Permanent Voter Cards collected were 43,881, which was more than the margin lead of the two political parties with the highest votes. The Peoples Democratic Party candidate scored 93,120 while the All Progressives Congress polled 79,444. “With a lead margin of 13,676, the result can only be declared inconclusive,” Galadima said. Also, the INEC Returning Officer of Gusau/Tsafe federal constituency, Dr. Aminu Dabai also announced the cancellation of 38 polling units affected from both Gusau and Tsafe Local Government Areas. According to Dabai, the results from the seven RAs had an insignificant lead margin between PDP and APC. The returning officers disclosed that the electoral body would communicate on fixing supplementary elections. https://punchng.com/inec-declares-zamfara-central-election-inconclusive/ |

THE Joint Election Observation Mission of the International Republican Institute, IRI, and the National Democratic Institute, NDI, led by former President of Malawi, Joyce Banda, says the 2023 election fell short of the reasonable expectations of Nigerians. According to the 40-member delegation of the two United States Institutes, logistical challenges and multiple incidents political violence overshadowed the electoral process and impeded a substantial number of voters from participating. The Joint Election Observation Mission stated these in their preliminary statement and recommendations which was made available to Vanguard in Abuja on Monday. They explained that members of the team were deployed across all six geopolitical regions of the country to observe all stages of the voting process; stressing that their observations informed the preliminary findings and practical recommendations to improve future elections. The preliminary statement reads, “The mission notes that despite the much-needed reforms to the The Electoral Act 2022, the election fell well short of Nigerian citizens’ reasonable expectations. “Logistical challenges and multiple incidents of political violence overshadowed the electoral process and impeded a substantial number of voters from participating. “Ongoing currency and fuel shortages also imposed excessive burdens on voters and election officials, and Nigerian marginalized groups, especially women, continue to face barriers to seeking and obtaining political office.” The statement insisted that late opening of polling locations and logistical failures created tensions and the secrecy of the ballot was compromised in some polling units given overcrowding. It added, “At the close of the polls, challenges with the electronic transfer of results and their upload to a public portal in a timely manner. undermined citizen confidence at a crucial moment of the process. “Moreover, inadequate communication and lack of transparency by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) about their cause and extent created confusion and eroded voters’ trust in the process. “The combined effect of these problems disenfranchised Nigerian voters in many areas, although the scope and scale is currently unknown.” Nonetheless, the delegation maintained that despite these issues, Nigerians demonstrated their commitment to the democratic process. According to IRI and NDI, voters demonstrated resilience and resolve to have their voices heard through the ballot. “As the nation awaits the results of the February 25 polls and the Nigerian people prepare for upcoming gubernatorial elections, we urge political actors and their supporters to remain calm and exercise restraints,” the US Institutes appealed. They, however, lauded INEC; saying it administered a nationwide election according to the electoral calendar for the first time in the country’s recent history. The delegation tasked stakeholders, especially INEC, the government, political actors and civil society to redouble their efforts to deliver on citizens expectations for transparent and inclusive elections, and to ensure that electoral outcomes are a credible expression of the voters’ will. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/02/nigerias-2023-election-fell-short-of-expectations-us-institutes/ |
