The government can try this or even revoke the so called licenses of some traditional rulers but not a first class king like that of the Benin.

The government might not get to survive the consequence of such action, if they attempt to do that to the Benin kingdom. it might be a phyrric victory for them.

there are certain sites that have been designated by U.N. & some government as "cultural sites" there is no amount of development you want to do that will make you go destroy or temper such sites! that's respecting history & cultural values

on the other hand, things are changing, if the traditional rulers don't uphold those values that they have always been known for, then the government might have the guts to try such & might get away with it cos the people will not care (cause of their anger towards the ruler)

that is the point, any throne that is subject to constitution can be dethrone, when the ruling house play politics before getting the throne. in benin kingdom nobody, not even presido can dethrone our king, even britain try it, they fail

In the case of the binis it's even worse. No room to interfare. The king is born and not made.
You can ask the family members and friends of the late onyeregbulem (former milad Edo state) how it went when he challenged the Oba's authority/ supremacy.
The point here is the gov can do whatever he likes under the constitution but it has no effect whatsoever on the sacredness of that throne. The binis can take Carr of their Oba if your augument, like others here, is based on salaries and allowances.

Its like saying because Bihari is the President of Nigeria according to the constitution then he can appoint anyone as a governor.... after all, borrowing your words ...he is the boss of all governors in his country. It is a misnormal, not in Benin. In Benin the king is born. The crown Prince is an Oba in waiting with or without govt staff of office. You can only talk of appointment when the throne is not hereditary. If you read that portion the ARABIAN quoted, you will discover that govt do not appoint traditional rulers, they only recognise.
The making of an Oba in Benin is an age long tradition that even politics cannot alter.
Some went to school but they lack basic comprehension, of which if not well managed can lead to chaos.
