I will support the CJN on this. Kill the Looters because they are killers themselves.

They are killing our people everyday with poverty, bad roads, dangerous hospitals, hunger, police harassment, extra-judicial killings and sentences.

Let us support this idea and push it, LOOTERS of public funds must die.

PM NEWS exaggerated the whole event. I live in the community where the incident took place and what happened was simply a case of two drunk people, in the midst of other equally drunken people messing around with a gun and paying dearly for it. The victim was very drunk, and when he continously boasted of his new bullet proof charm to all present, his friend Taju decided to oblige the man's request to be tested. Nobody was really in the rite frame to stop drunk Taju anyway. So Taju took the gun and blew his friend to the next world,in front of several witnesses.
When everybody saw the gaping bleeding hole in the man's chest and realised what had just happened, the alcohol fumes cleared from their brains sharply and na so everybody Usain Bolt comot for area.
However nobody abandoned shop, or house for that matter, and it was the OPC themselves that hunted the runaway "Indiana Jones" Taju and hauled his a.s.s to Idimu Police Station.

Physics OED,
I must confess your lines proved at least some Binis are reasonable. My posting to you responded to was a reply to all the sarcasm many Binis had made about Ijaws in the media. It is simply a shame that a few fools are trying to cause trouble . WAR between Ijaws and Binis are not necessary and have never happened. Bini has never invaded Ijaw and Ijaw has never in history occupied any body's land by force. Ijaws only settle at where they were never intimidated if not They d move. If ancient Binis never had a fight with Ijaws over any land why are Binis of today doing same ? Who is fighting the Ijaws in GELE GELE ? are they Binis who live in Gelegele or some Binis elsewhere ? People should reason, Bini people from another settlement can not come to GELE gele TO Claim that a town inhabited by another language group belongs to them . The forest surrounding the town could be of dispute but not the town itself . Are there any historical evidence of early Bini residence or activity in gele gele ? cemetery, shrine and family to mention a few ,

My mother's town in Rivers state called Bakana today is originally named OBA-AMA which was named after the title of the king from where they migrated from. The main founding family of that Kalabari Ijaw town were from the Ijaw settlements of the GELE GELE area at the Bini river and at that time the area was under Bini empire ( Empire does not mean they were Bini people ). The rise of Bini empire had the Binis ruling over several non Bini people ) and every one respected the OBA just as every one respect the king and queens of England under the British empire. That area Gelegele and the River Benin might be the original home of Ijaw people from where they dispersed to different places because many other Ijaws in Rivers state traced their root to the same spot, People ushould not lay claim to where they do not live,
That is why you all need to pressurize GEJ and your Senators to quit being lazy or greedy and take steps to fundamentally restructure this country.

This situation where Kings, Governors and President exercise so much control over most real estate, land and resource is NOT justice. The power of ownership must reside in the individual, else clannish wranglings will destroy us all one day!

We cannot keep sweeping this under the carpet. Nigeria is going to have to fundamentally restructure or die.

Nigeria's Emergency Management Agency accuses state governments of ignoring its early warning messages in the wake of flooding across the country

Nigeria's Emergency Management Agency (Nema) has accused state governments of overlooking early warning messages in the wake of flooding across the country that has killed around 140 people and displaced tens of thousands.

In early 2011 the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (Nimet) predicted heavy rainfall. Based on this, Nema sent out early warning messages via radio in May to governments and citizens in seven states, including Kano in the north. "We advertised … for both government and people to start cleaning up drainage ditches, and we formally wrote to state governments, including Kano state, to prepare for the expected flooding this year," said Nema co-ordinator Musatafa Suleiman.

The Nigerian Red Cross also put out early warnings based on information it received from Africa's climate prediction centre, African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development.

But, according to Suleiman, "few states adhered to the early warning messages and started clearing their drainage systems or canals for easy passage of floodwater".

Nema is trying to improve its information-gathering and dissemination so it can play a stronger early warning role in future.
But local authorities need to shift from a reactive to a proactive role to fund and map out clearer emergency preparedness plans from now on, said Umar Maigari, disaster management co-ordinator for the Nigerian Red Cross in Bauchi state in northern Nigeria.

Several states have no emergency preparedness measures at all, and those that do, are poorly funded. Heavy flooding in August in Kano, Katsina, Sokoto and Jigawa states displaced tens of thousands.

Top preparedness priorities are to clear drainage ditches and move communities in flood-plains to new locations, according to Nema. Particularly at risk in most states are densely populated, low-income areas of cities, where refuse dumping and inappropriate construction of roads and buildings have blocked drains, said Charles Oji, a town planner in Warri (a major city in Delta state).

Abiola Ajimobi, the governor of Oyo state in the south-west, gave a seven-day demolition notice on 1 September to houseowners living on drainage paths in the capital, Ibadan. Residents said they were not given enough notice of the move.
It is not too late to strategise preparedness activities for the 2012 rainy season, said Nema's Suleiman.

Very little progress has been made in these areas since 2010, when heavy rains hit the north, displacing 2 million people after local authorities were forced to open floodgates on swollen rivers.

The head of Nimet, Anthony Anuforom, anticipates that parts of Bauchi, Oyo and Cross Rivers states may experience more flooding in the next few weeks.

1. El Rufai is a snake, very clever but very cunny.

2. Utomi really really wanted to work with Tinubu/Atiku and ACN.

3. Utomi knew lack of money was his main problem.

4. Obasanjo's ego is massive, I mean maaaaaaasssssssive, Utomi told US it will take a high profile United Nations appointment to convince him to leave power.

[ no wonder OBJ kept gate-crashing UN office on NY after he left office  grin grin grin grin

5. Ribadu was working for El Rufai and trying to eliminate possible opponents like Ibori, Odili and co, because he knew they had access to too much corrupt money and will probably drown his ambition. He promised To make Ribadu IG in 2007.  undecided

6. Ribadu and Rufai plotted behind OBJ.

7. Utomi spoke with ND militants and some said they are ready to kidnap people and support him with ransom dollars. Eeeeyah  angry  embarassed (kidnapping na crime o ) undecided

8. Utomi believed Buhari w'ld win the north but northern elites were scared of him or don't like him, but the people support him massively. (that was 2007, not even 2011 ). He believed Buhari would have lost the south anyway.

9. Utomi sought the support of Christian organizations just like he wanted the SS and SW votes ( was that a precursor of the GEJ 2011 strategy? )

SUBJECT: UTOMI: WHO IS THE CLEVEREST POLITICAL PLAYER?

¶1.  (C) Summary. During an October 19 conversation with the Consul General, Presidential aspirant and Lagos Business School Director Pat Utomi asserted that President Obasanjo masterminded the impeachment crisis in Ekiti State as part of his strategy to sow political confusion in order to postpone the election and extend his term in office.  Utomi also contended that Minister for Federal Capital Territory Nasir El-Rufai has been taken prisoner by his own presidential ambitions and that EFCC Chairman Ribadu is abetting El-Rufai by attempting to discredit the Vice President and several of the more visible governors who stand in the way of El Rufai's goal.  If the elections do not produce a south-south sensitive candidate, Utomi hypothesized the Niger Delta will quickly deteriorate.  While recognizing that he does not have much of a political structure now, Utomi believed he had done sufficient spadework to get the majority of Christian organizations on his side.  He beamed optimistically about
his chance of getting the endorsement of Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu and Tinubu's new party, the Action Congress.
End Summary.

--------------------------------------------- --
Ekiti Crisis: A Smokescreen for Term-Extension?
--------------------------------------------- --

¶2.  (C) On October 19, presidential aspirant Pat Utomi confided to the Consul General that he feared President Obasanjo masterminded the Ekiti impeachment crisis. Declaring a state of emergency in Ekiti was another link in a dubious concatenation that Obasanjo hopes will cause such
confusion that holding elections on schedule would become untenable.  As part of this benighted project, President Obasanjo also has intentionally pauperized INEC so that it would not have sufficient logistical assets to conduct elections, believes Utomi.  Last, Utomi hypothesized that the
quest for a third term constitutional amendment was dormant, not dead.  Utomi expected it would soon be revived.

¶3.  (C) Utomi believed that Obasanjo's combative personality and his thrawn penchant for converting friends into enemies and enemies into political untouchables has pasted the President into a corner.  Obasanjo feared the retribution that might be exacted should an unfriendly capture the 2007
elections, Utomi contended.  Utomi believed Obasanjo's friends should find the President a graceful way to exit. For example, an unprecedented United Nations/African Union special envoy position might be attractive enough to peacefully draw Obasanjo away from Aso Villa.  However, such
an opportunity would need to be delicately suggested to Obasanjo as a prestigious position worthy of his person.

--------------------------------------------- --
Is the Ball Out of Ribadu and El-Rufai's Court?
--------------------------------------------- --

¶4.  (C) According to Utomi, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, Minister for Federal Capital Territory, has been secretly nursing presidential ambition for a long time.  Claiming that El-Rufai may be as manipulative as he is intelligent, Utomi said El-Rufai had a conscious plan to set Obasajo and Atiku at each other.  With a foot in both camps, El-Rufai played on the insecurities of both men in a way that would make Shakespeare's Iago jealous.  In the end, El-Rufai played a leading role in the Obasanjo-Atiku estrangement.  This was all part of El-Rufai's plan to eliminate wholesale potential
rivals for the 2007 PDP nomination, Utomi offered.
¶5.  (C) The other main cog in El-Rufai's design is Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman Mal Nuhu Ribadu's apparent crusade against state governors.  El-Rufai knows he does not have the financial war chest or political structures and visibility of some of these governors, several of whom also eye the Presidency.  Thus his close friend Ribadu is attempting to corral as many governors as possible.
In exchange, Ribadu has been promised the slot of National Security Advisor or Inspector General of Police should El-Rufai ascend to the top of the pole.  However, El-Rufai's plans are beginning to backfire, Utomi indicated.

¶6.  (C) First, Ribadu's moves have generated too much friction.  This is causing Ribadu and El-Rufai a loss of goodwill in many important political quarters.  Perhaps more importantly, President Obasanjo has an inkling of El-Rufai's desires and is not altogether pleased by machinations that do
not dovetail with those of his own.  According to Utomi, El-Rufai and some of "the reformers" in the President's cabinet, including the Education Minister and Ribadu, held a meeting in London to map out their 2007 strategy, with El-Rufai succeeding Obasanjo.  President Obasanjo learned of
this unauthorized meeting after the fact and from sources other than the participants, continued Utomi.  This apparently has created some distance between Obasanjo and his reformers, Utomi maintained.

--------------------------------------
Disillusionment Towards 2007 Elections
--------------------------------------

¶7.  (C) The constitution is honored in the breach, the census is a political albatross, and INEC is being consumed by the enormity of the task it faces, Utomi lamented.  He doubted INEC's competency and denigrated the idea of computerizing the electoral process at this late stage.  The 2003 elections were flawed, Utomi said, and he predicted little better in ¶2007.

--------------------------------------------- ------
Presidential Aspirants Foiling Each Others' Chances
--------------------------------------------- ------

¶8.  (C) Pat Utomi did not postulate who will win the 2007 presidency, suggesting he considers himself a strong candidate.  Aides of General Ibrahim Babangida asked Utomi to become Babangida's running mate, Utomi recalled.  He thought Babangida's camp wanted his Igbo and south-south background to balance the ticket.  However, given Babangida's mephitic antecedents, Utomi said his reaction was but to grimace at the suggested association.  Not yet affiliated with a party, Utomi is considering running under the Action Congress with a northern running mate.  He stated he has had several conversations with AC leader and chief financer, Lagos Governor Tinubu, in this regard.  Utomi thought he would augment his candidacy through the eventual backing of Christian associations throughout the country.  Further, Utomi thought he could get the Vice President,s backing once Atiku recognizes that he is out of the Presidential race.

¶9.  (C) As for other presidential aspirants, Utomi commented that Buhari is easily the most popular candidate in the north but was being out maneuvered in his own party and had only de minimus support in the south.  Rivers State Governor Peter Odili will be the first to go to jail if EFCC Chairman Ribadu has any say, Utomi laughed.

---------------------
Niger Delta Nightmare
---------------------

¶10.  (C) Utomi described the Niger Delta as "still at war," suggesting youth will be armed for political gain as they were in 2003.  Utomi noted that during a recent visit to jailed Ijaw leader Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, Asari was surrounded by members of the Ijaw Youth Council.  When Utomi joked that he has no campaign funds for the upcoming elections, the youth said they could simply take hostages for money.  If the south-south does not see the next president as sympathetic to their plight, things will further deteriorate and fast, Utomi warned.  Utomi speculated that Asari,s release would help stem violence in the Delta.

-------
Comment
-------

¶11.  (C) Utomi's assessment of the political landscape echoes what others have said.  What Utomi saw is a President who is hesitant to leave, an electoral body that is lazy and uninspired, political aspirants doing their best to destroy their opponents and a Niger Delta that is turbid and
gradually approaching its boiling point.  Through this much and more, Utomi thinks he can navigate a course that will lead him to the Presidency.  He has a positive image, name recognition, and many Nigerians pine for change.  Yet without a party and a large pocketbook, his quest remains a steep
climb.  End Comment.

Chairman Juli Pharmacy Plc, Prince Julius Adeluyi

By Crusoe Osagie

Former Minister of Health and Chairman Juli Pharmacy Plc, Prince Julius Adeluyi, has declared that Nigeria can turn around in six months, if only it has a good leadership, governance, and transparent structure in place.

Adeluyi was the guest speaker at the 2011 seminar and luncheon of the Professional Practice Group (PPG) of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) tagged: ‘A Roadmap to Enhance the Professional Business Environment: Best Practice’.

He said Nigeria was not faced with the issue of poverty alone but added that that there also exists a poverty of leadership and ideas.

In his words, “Nigeria does not have any business being poor because Nigeria naturally is not poor. All this can turn around in 6 months if we have good leadership. There is a poverty of leadership which we must address. The biggest problem we have in this country has to do with governance; the quality of governance at every level must be addressed.”

According to him, 80 per cent of all the money is in the hands of one per cent of the people, urging the chamber to press for good and transparent governance through an authoritative democracy. “If this is in place and we have good people to implement them, Nigeria will change in six months and this poverty will disappear,” he said.

I will say there is a displaced priority. Until we have good leadership, governance, transparency and integrity driving the system corruption will continue, and when there is corruption progress is excluded,” he added.

He pointed out that it was difficult to preach ethics in Nigeria due to poverty, adding that the challenges were too many to be unethical.

In his words, “There are lots of people talking about ethics today that do not even practice it. Sometimes it is almost a crime to be ethical in a non-ethical setting. This is where the chamber of commerce must come out and say they are celebrating not because of their bottom line but showing people that even in this harsh operating environment business can still be done ethically.

“We must never give up. The Chamber, after it has strengthened itself, must make sure that it continues to do advocacy. If this chamber must change, it must select and utilise the younger generation and also partner with similar chamber formations. If you team up, you will have a good network and then you will have a good net worth such that if your name is mentioned in any particular forum what you will get is response and respect,” he said.

The President, LCCI, Otunba Femi Deru, said the theme of the seminar was significant to the declining ethical standards in the corporate world. He said best practices should be promoted and practiced by professionals in the country because it was the only way to curb unwholesome practices in the business community and the economy at large.

The Chairperson, PPG, Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, said the seminar was another opportunity to bring into focus important issues affecting the professionals and the economy.

She said, as part of the group’s contribution to the development of the professional practice, it was organising interactive sessions such as this seminar to address topical issues affecting the sector and the economy as a whole, while proffering solutions to the problems confronting operators within the sector.

She added that the group was one of the active and vibrant organs of the chamber, focusing on the impact of professional practice on the economy.

Stop clowning, cos it really doesn't make you look good. Even your report quotes the president of Hyundai Heavy Industries as making the statement, so what exactly is your point?
The owner of a company makes an announcement in front of the Worlds press only to retract it later, and you feel Nigeria is to blame for it? . . .Its "your civic duty to ask call" Nigeria out on it? shocked Is it because the person that lied is a foreigner? Which kain inferiority complex be dat?
I don't understand what you are getting at, you're not making sense, bro,
Clowning? grin

I also see that you are now trying to paint me as some anti-Nigeria person with inferiority complex. Nice try - read my location signature.

My point is very clear, since you missed it, I'll repeat it:

The president (who is definitely not more Nigerian than I am) went to the press without properly clarifying his story. The 234NEXT report has direct quotes from the president.

Mr Korea can answer to his shareholders, that's their headache, Reuters reporters can answer to their newspaper, nah their wahala be that.

The Nigerian president answers to us sir. He rushed out to the press trumpeting a lie about some "multi billion dollar" shipyard  without doing due diligence, that is the issue.

I don't want my president believing every idea without scrutinizing and veryfing it very well. He's my president too. Nor be so?

Keep the spin coming.  grin

I don't have a problem with making deals to save lives. Human life is the most precious thing in the world.
Did you read their conditions? The day the Nigerian government sign and fulfil a deal like that is the day I'll change my name to Goodluck.

They are demanding justice, the leaders we have don't believe in justice. They prefer to throw money at you and hide the issue under the carpet. All of them!

Just pray very hard that Boko Haram is not ideologically deep, else forget that Naija styled deals you prefer. undecided

I must stress again that any justice must include the trial and execution of those who murdered people at the UN building and other bombings across the country.

Well, the story happens to have spread from Reuters. Do you think Reuters head office is in Nigeria and their CEO is Dr. Abati?

The Hyundai president made a statement in the presence of international witnesses only to retract it, the man is definitely lying; thats what should be worrying to us, even more than what Reuters who were witnesses on the spot reported.
There are deeper questions involved that merit more than our usual empty NL laugh fests. I find the whole saga quite troubling.
Spread from Reuters?

Below is the report from Friday showing the president parroting this multi billion dollar lie and mis-information.

It is now a matter of "he said, she said" so as a Nigerian I'm looking as this drama and shaking my head wondering how many times they fail to do due diligence and verify information before acting on it.

They are paid to get things right. I expect an honest apology not all this bravado and stoopid blame shifting Abati wrote I.e "Mr Korea shin shon shing did not shake his head to deny what the consultant and governor said" (my emphasis)  grin

Maybe the korea guy nor hear English, how e wan take confirm or deny?  grin

So you are right there are more questions to ask and I can bet that Hyundai Heavy share holders asked their CEO hence the hurry to clarify. Because a $7Billion investment in an African country just like that is no joke.

I bet they asked him to clarify when they saw the report. Because an unsound $7Billion investment is enough to shift stock prices to some danger zones undecided

My government rushed to the press, they probably rushed to judgment. It's my civic duty to ask call them out on it.

The federal government will continue to vigorously implement socio-economic and security reforms that will encourage more foreign investors to come to Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan said Thursday in Abuja.

Speaking at an audience with Jai-Seong Lee, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea, Mr. Jonathan said the Federal Government fully realizes the importance of greater foreign investment for Nigeria's efforts to generate more employment for its youthful population.

The president also welcomed the decision by Hyundai Heavy Industries to establish a multi-billion dollar shipyard at Brass, Bayelsa state, noting that its completion next year will significantly boost Nigeria's economic development and create plenty of jobs for the local population.

He said his administration will, therefore, continue to do everything possible to attract more investors to labour-intensive sectors of the Nigerian economy.
"Hyundai has a long-standing relationship with Nigeria. You have always played a key role in our economy, especially our oil industry. We appreciate what you have done and are elated by your latest investment in the Shipyard at Brass," the President told Mr. Lee.

Mr Jonathan assured Mr Lee that relevant government ministries and agencies will give Hyundai all necessary support to ensure that the shipyard is completed on schedule.

Mr. Lee was accompanied by the Bayelsa State Governor, Timipre Sylva and other Hyundai executives.
He told the President that on completion, the first phase of the Brass Shipyard will provide employment for at least 2,000 Nigerians.

Maybe Reuters reporters are fools like Nigerians too? Because the directly quoted the Hyundai president; its there in black and white, so put on your thinking cap bro. Most times in a headlong rush to shout from the rooftops, we expose our weaknesses. Hysteria is not wisdom.
I did not elect Reuters. I do not care how careful Reuters is. I expect the highest level of service from a government that gets paid to serve me.

If Reuters got their quote wrong, they answer to their editors and those with responsibility over them.

When The Nigerian Government gets it wrong, they answer to Nigerians. On this one, they apparently failed to wash their teeth before showing it to the camera. Their due diligence was all wrong. I reserve the right to be "hysterical" about that.

But keep the words of wisdom coming sage, I'm enjoying it.  grin
