Why has the value of naira fallen so much since PMB came to power? Whose responsibility is it to improve the value of our currency? It it me? Is it not the one that promised to make #1 = $1?
PoliticsAppointment Of Dead Men Into Boards Of Parastatals: Presidency Explains by OKDnigeria(op): 2:46pm On Dec 30, 2017
The presidency has reacted to the controversy generated by its appointment, Friday evening, of 1,468 Nigerians into the boards of agencies and parastatals.

The list generated controversy after names of some dead persons were found among the appointees.
PREMIUM TIMES checks also show duplications and appointments of individuals that are no longer in the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The Presidency however downplayed the matter Saturday as, according to a spokesman of the president, there was nothing scandalous about the list.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES by telephone, Garba Shehu said “the list has a history” which explains the controversy around it.

“In 2015, Mr. President requested all state chapters of the party to submit names of 50 party members for board appointments,” Mr. Shehu said.

He said the names where compiled by the national secretariat of the APC and forwarded to the then secretary to the government of the federation, Babachir Lawal.

“However, complaint arose from some governors who felt they were not carried along in the process. To answer this, the president constituted a committee under the vice president to review and reflect the interest of the governors”.

Mr Shehu however said action was delayed on the report of the committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as President Muhammadu Buhari took ill.

“The president’s trips for medical attention slowed down completion of the process,” he said, until when Mr Buhari decided to revisit the matter recently.

“The current SGF was only directed to complete that process by releasing the list which he apparently did without altering it,” Mr. Shehu explained.

Mr Shehu admitted that errors were committed but added that “no human undertaking can be free of mistakes”.

He said the errors identified with the list were not enough to describe the exercise as scandalous, insisting that “there is no scandal”.

The spokesperson said all errors in the list would be corrected.

PoliticsCorruption Alert: What Is Happening To The Excess Crude Account? by OKDnigeria(op): 11:31pm On Dec 04, 2017
During the last administration, the Excess Crude Account (ECA) was consistently on the front burner of national discourse. Nigerians questioned every withdrawal made from it by the last government. Everyone seemed interested.

But since the advent of the current administration, the ECA has disappeared from the radar. Nobody hears anything about it anymore. And the ECA was reported to have about $2.5 billion by the time this government took over.

Since last year, oil prices have consistently been above the budget benchmark. This year's benchmark is $44.5/barrel. Current oil price is about $60/barrel. That's a difference of $15/barrel.

Daily oil production is 2.2 million barrels.

Multiplying $15 by 2.2 million, you have $33 million, that's 1.8 billion naira.

So the government rakes in about 1.8 billion naira extra budgetary income daily. You know what that amounts to in a month and in a year!

This excess crude money is supposed to be paid into the ECA to be saved, or to be shared by the three tiers of government. But nothing is heard about it, no update from the government. Nothing! And the government keeps borrowing money to finance budget deficit.

In the last administration, the complaint was that the money was being shared, as demanded by the governors, in this administration, nobody knows what happens to the money.

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will be 60 tomorrow. But ahead of the milestone, President Muhammadu Buhari has led the chorus of birthday well-wishers, praising his younger predecessor for his humble beginnings and his rise to the topmost post in Nigeria.

President Buhari in the message sent out by Special adviser on media, Femi Adesina warmly felicitated with Jonathan on his 60th birthday, November 20th, 2017.

“President Buhari joins members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), professional colleagues, associates of Dr Jonathan, and his family in celebrating the unique history of the Nigerian leader, who within a short period rose from being a Deputy Governor, Governor, Vice President to becoming Nigeria’s President for six years”, Adesina wrote..

“President Buhari believes Dr Jonathan’s foray into politics and ascendency to the highest political office in Nigeria from a humble riverine background testifies to the greatness and inclusiveness of Nigeria’s democracy, and serves as an invitation to all those with interest to add value to the nation.”

PoliticsThunderous Shout Of “no, No” At House Of Reps Over Buhari’s Visit by OKDnigeria(op): 8:32pm On Nov 02, 2017
ABUJA-Shouts of thunderous “no, no” filled the legislative chamber of the House of Representatives at Thursday plenary when the Speaker, Hon. Yakubu Dogara announced the intention of President Muhammadu Buhari to address a joint session of the National Assembly alongside the presentation of 2018 budget estimate.

Hardly had Dogara finished reading the letter from the President than the lawmakers spontaneously went loud in their voices.

It was possible to ascertain to political leaning of the lawmakers whether they were of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC or the opposition Peoples Democratic Part, PDP or even both parties.
It was not also possible to pinpoint why the House erupted in the seeming objection notice to the president’s intended appearance.

But when the uproar which endured for some 60 seconds fizzled out, the Speaker reminded the parliamentarians that they had no legal right to stop the president from addressing the joint session of the House and the Senate.

He said: ‘I wish we have the constitutional right to say no. But unfortunately, we don’t have it…This House is the custodian of the constitution. The President has the right…”

This is arguably the first time President Buhari would be presenting the national budget proposal before the National Assembly in the month of November since his assumption of office in 2015.

The month of December has always witnessed the annual ritual prior to now.

Many people are however of the view that the new development was to accelerate legislative input to the budget estimates to ensure its timely passage in the fiscal year.

Alhaji Buba Galadima, a Board of Trustees, BoT, member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former close ally of President Muhammadu Buhari has described some Agricultural policies of the current Federal government as “mere propaganda.”

He said this while faulting a claims that the Buhari’s government has used Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to grant farmers loan and financial enablement.

Galadima insisted that the current Agricultural policies of the Buhari’s government is not being felt by farmers in the country.

Speaking with The Sun, the APC Chieftain said, “No, no, there are people from certain parts of the country that can never get loan or assistance from the government.

“I have been looking for some amount of money, I gave out my C of O, certificate of my farm and office that amounts to over N500m, yet no bank was able to grant me N16m loan . I had to sell my property to get some money.

“So what government is doing in the area of farming is mere propaganda, I have not seen anything on ground.

“I wrote to the Minister of Agriculture that I needed to buy certain farm equipment and agricultural facilities, he is yet to reply my letter four months after.

CultureOoni Disagrees With FG, Says IPOB Not A Terrorist Group by OKDnigeria(op): 12:59am On Oct 07, 2017
Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has disapproved of the declaration made by South-East Governors that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, are terrorists.

Ogunwusi said members of the group should not be seen as terrorists because they were only seeking justice and equity.

The monarch made the remark on Friday when he paid a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

Ogunwusi also referred to the Nnamdi Kanu-led group as the Indigenous People of Brighter Nigeria, IPOBN.

The monarch urged government should tap and channel the energies of agitators towards building a better Nigeria.

He advocated for proper re-orientation as a panacea to negative tendencies.

According to Ogunwusi, “There is something that is bordering them; there is something that is making them to cry.

“We should not throw them away; we should draw them closer because the youth of this country are the future, the energy, they are the heartbeat of this country.

“We must chart the course of doing things with positive energy. I want to let you know that you are not alone in this.

“We stand by you positively in a very progressive manner. We stand by you; we all must come together to build a united Nigeria. We don’t want any war; we don’t want any disintegration.

“The problem confronting Nigeria remains the inability to harness the potentials and weld together the diversities to create a strong, united country.”

Buhari said, “I have said it so many times, I don’t mind saying it now to you because some of you may not have even the time to listen to radio or watch television as regularly as other people do.

“From 1999 to 2014, Nigeria has never realised so much resources since our independence, never, because the average production – go to any renowned financial or economic institution in the world; they know Nigeria produced an average of – (was) 2.1 million barrel per day at an average cost of 100 dollars per barrel.

PoliticsYou’re The ‘rogue Elephant’ – APC Replies Itse Sagay by OKDnigeria(op): 11:24pm On Sep 25, 2017
The ruling All Progressives Congress on Monday reacted angrily to the interview granted The Nation Newspaper of Sunday by the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-corruption (PACAC), Professor Itse Sagay (SAN).

In the said interview, Sagay described the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as “the most unprincipled group of people” who are “encouraging and accepting rogues” in the party.

He said: “When I say ‘rogues’, I don’t mean stealing. In literature, when you say someone is a rogue elephant, it means people who are running riot and destroying the party.”

In a statement signed by Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, its National Publicity Secretary, APC noted that the Webster dictionary defines ‘rogue elephant’ as “one whose behaviour resembles that of a rogue elephant in being aberrant or independent.”

But the APC noted that the description is more fitting as a description of how Sagay has conducted himself since he was appointed to handle President Buhari’s anti corruption efforts: “Clearly if we have today, anyone in our government or, by extension, the party who feels accountable only to his own ego; who does not feel the need to bridle his tongue for the sake of anything that is higher than himself; who feels independent of everyone and every institution; that person is Professor Sagay.

The party noted that when asked by the interviewer if he would stop speaking if the President asks him to stop speaking, Sagay said: “Yes, he is my employer. If he tells me to stop talking, I’ll stop talking. But I have certain rights too that I can exercise in addition to that, because I’m not going to be in a position where I am impotent. So, I must obey him, but I can go beyond that and obey myself too. That’s it.”

This, APC said in the statement is another confirmation that the description “rogue elephant” is fitting of Sagay.

The party said, “Framed in another way, what Sagay is saying here is that, no matter what is at stake, he would rather resign than obey the President if the President tries to restrain him. This is the quintessential rogue elephant behaviour.

“In his sheer arrogance, he forgets that it is impossible for him to call out the leadership of the party as “weak” and “unprincipled” without indicting the President, who is the leader of the party and has the fundamental responsibility to build the party.

“If Sagay had any iota of respect for the man who dug him back from inevitable oblivion and puts him in a position in which he now feels superior to everyone, he would channel his opinions and advice to the President on how to make the party stronger and more principled. It appears however that Sagay does not have anything constructive to say about anything. He only knows how to tear down and assault everyone and everything.

“We want to remind Sagay and all other appointees of our government that the only reason they occupy their current position today is because the APC won the election. There is, therefore, a matter of honour to show decorum and respect for the party and its leadership. You cannot love the fruit and hate the tree that produced it.”

PoliticsI Can Swear, I Never Demanded Any Money From Obiano - Peter Obi by OKDnigeria(op): 1:18am On Sep 21, 2017
A former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has denied nursing ambition to be the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019.

The ex-governor, who claimed he left about $156million in bank, N25billion cash and N25billion in local investment for his successor, Willie Obiano, also denied demanding for N7billion from the incumbent.

Obi, who made the clarifications in a chat with journalists in Abuja, asked Governor Obiano to join him in church and swear an oath on the N7billion controversy.

He said: “Let me ask a question, you all are educated and it is on record in this country and documented, I can prove it with every clear documented evidence that when I left office, I left over N25billion in local investment for Anambra State. I left over N25 billion in cash in the bank. I also left $156 million in the bank in Nigeria. Do you think anyone can leave such money and go to beg the person he is handing over to give him N7 billion when I left over N75 billion?

“I would have taken the N7billion first, then give them the balance and I will still be in good shape. Let me use the dollar as example. Nobody has ever left $1 in any state in Nigeria. I left $156 million. About $30million alone is over N7billion. If I had taken chances and left $120million, I will still be a champion. So why will I leave that one and go begging for peanut?

“Why would I need the money and then go to beg the person I handed over to give me N7billion? I would have taken it. Let us be rational about all these.

“What is the idea behind this? It is sheer madness for anybody to do it. Not even in a family business, I cannot leave money and then go back to beg my brother talk less of handing over to somebody who is not my brother and who can change tomorrow.

“So, it is sheer blackmail, I have never and I am a Christian. I am not supposed to swear but I can put my hand in any form of oath to say I have never discussed with anybody to be paid any amount. Let Obiano himself come, let us go before hierarchy of our church or anything to swear. I have never done that and I will never do it.”

PoliticsUS Lawyers Sue Buratai, Obiano, Others For Killing & Torture Of Igbos by OKDnigeria(op): 10:49pm On Aug 26, 2017
Lawyers from a United States law firm, Fein & DelValle PLLC, have filed a suit against Major-General TY Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff; Mr. Willie Obiano, governor of Anambra State; Mr. Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia State governor and 13 others in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.

The suit is a sequel to a trip the lawyers undertook to Enugu between 19 and 24 August, during which they said they were able to gather facts and conduct research to advance the Torture Victims Protection Act (TVPA) lawsuit filed before the US District Court on behalf of 10 anonymous plaintiffs. The suit is against 16 individuals alleged to have had a hand in extra-judicial killings and torture of Igbo people, Christians, and those with critical political viewpoints.

In the case, styled John Doe, et al v. Turkur Yusuf Buratai, et al (Civil Action No. 1:17-cv-0133), the plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages to secure justice for the Igbo people, prevention of genocide, ethnic cleansing or extermination of Christians in Nigeria by radical Islamic Hausa-Fulani terrorists.

The lawyers stated that they are convinced that Nigeria is the most dangerous country in the world for Christians. According to them the sanctity of churches in Nigeria is routinely defiled through the killing of children, whose corpses are hidden between pews.

This, in addition to the country's membership of the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC), and the adoption of the Sharia code by 12 Northern states, they noted, constitutes a violation of Nigeria’s secular constitution.

They stated that the Christian Open Door Report of 2015 found that Boko Haram killed 11,000 Christians, destroyed 13,000 churches and 1,500 Christian schools, as well as internally displaced 2.6 million people, among who were 1.3 million Christians.

They equally recalled that on 11 July, a coalition of Northern groups ordered 11 million Igbo people residing in North to relocate to their home states by 1 October, something the lawyers alleged was endorsed by the Federal Government and state governments in the North.

"The Government of Nigeria and 19 Northern states have tacitly endorsed the threatened genocide of twice the number exterminated by the Nazis in the Holocaust," the lawyers alleged.

They noted that the federal and state governments in northern Nigeria refused to arrest those behind the chilling threat against the Igbo.

In the suit against the Chief of Army Staff and others, the lawyers said the US District Court issued an order granting the plaintiffs' motion to proceed anonymously because they reasonably feared lethal retaliation against themselves or families if their identities were revealed.

They argued that actions of the defendants in the suit amounted to crimes against humanity, which could be prosecuted in any jurisdiction in the world.

"Indeed, the Convention Against Torture mandates that signatory nations like the United States and Nigeria prosecute the crimes of torture or extrajudicial killings," the lawyers stated.

A total of 14 of the 16 individual defendants is Federal Government officials, while the other two are Messrs. Obiano and Ikpeazu, both governors of Anambra and Abia states. The Anambra State governor, they noted, has apologized for the killing of the plaintiffs perpetrated under his watch.

The defendants, the lawyers said, are yet to respond after 21 days of the service of the summons and complaint. They added that their chances of successful prosecution of the suit are bright.

"We are optimistic about our chances of victory at trial or earlier," they said.

The defendants are represented by a California-based Nigerian law firm, which said it has been contacted by the Federal Government but not by individual defendants.

And where are all those shameless critics who keep comparing President Trump to President Buhari? The two of them are not mates at all.

Not only is President Muhammadu Buhari older than President Donald Trump, in a comparison between them on an elementary matter like jobs, we find that according to the latest US job report from the United States Department of Labour, the US economy has added 1,074,000 under President Trump while according to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, the Nigerian economy lost 4.58 million jobs in President Buhari’s first year!

This is no mean task! It is easy to do what Trump did and make jobs appear, but it is much harder to do what President Buhari has done and make jobs that someone produced disappear!

And as President Muhammadu Buhari continues to make London Nigeria’s new Federal Capital Territory, his rapidly shrinking horde of supporters want us to feel sorry for him by selling the narrative that what is happening to him could happen to anyone.

That is true enough, but make no mistake, President Buhari does not deserve our sympathy. When the shoe was on the other foot, he called on the Executive Council of the Federation to declare the late President Yar’adua incapacitated and failing that, for the Senate to impeach him.
His exact words on March 9, 2009 were, “If the Executive Council of the Federation had acted in accordance with the constitution, by invoking the necessary sections to declare the President incapacitated, we would not have found ourselves in this present situation.”

Again, when he thought he could be sanctimonious without proving his sainthood, he decried the practice of government officials going abroad at public expense for medical treatment.
His exact words on April 27, 2016 were, “While this administration will not deny anyone of his or her fundamental human rights, we will certainly not encourage expending Nigerian hard-earned resources on any government official seeking medical care abroad.”

Today he is spending his 96th day in London and “expending Nigerian hard-earned resources” on himself. If these are not prima facie evidence of hypocrisy, then I am as old as Robert Mugabe!

And I must say that I was not really surprised that the Buhari administration brutalised popular musician, Charly Boy and his #ResumeorResign group who were beaten, tear-gassed and slapped at the Unity Fountain on Tuesday the 8th of August, 2017.

What less can one expect from an administration that killed 347 shiite men, women, children and infants in cold blood on December 15, 2015?

The incident at the Unity Fountain involving Charly Boy and others only proves that dictators may grow old, but they do not grow into democrats!

And the Senate lost a chance to side with Nigerians when it described the Charly Boy-led group as “unreasonable”.

If Charly Boy’s group is unreasonable for demanding that President Muhammadu Buhari #ResumeOrResign, was President Buhari also unreasonable when he demanded that the late President Yar’adua resume or be impeached on March 9, 2010?

President Muhammadu Buhari himself, his side kick, Nasir El-Rufai, and other top shots of the present All Progressives Congress-led government protested against the Jonathan administration but were never tear-gassed or harassed!

In the case of El-Rufai, woe betide you if you dare hold a press conference in Kaduna. You may end up being treated worse than Senator Shehu Sani and his guests!
I mean, we are not allowed to see President Muhammadu Buhari. We are not allowed to hear from President Buhari. We are not allowed to protest against President Buhari. Yet President Buhari’s government wants us to pray for President Buhari’s health!
And the most ridiculous part of the saga is that the Presidency has the guts to tell Nigerians that it is disrespectful to ask after the President’s health status and that he is entitled to his privacy as a ‘private citizen’.
Is the Presidency not ashamed to call President Muhammadu Buhari ‘a private citizen’? He is staying at ‘Abuja House’ not ‘Buhari’s House and we the citizens of Nigeria are paying for his treatment. He is NOT a private citizen. Yesterday, he released a statement condemning the Ozubulu massacre and assuring us of our safety. Which private citizen does that?

Nigeria is tired of a part-time President. Nigeria is tired of a freelance President. Nigeria is tired of a private-citizen President!

In fact, I suddenly feel inspired to write a book titled, How To Identify A Dictator: He uses your tax money to pay for his medical treatment, yet you are not entitled to know his medical condition. When it suits him, he is a public official. When it does not, he transforms to a private citizen. Yet, his government instructs you to pray for him. No, I am not talking of Kim Jong-Un here!
That President Muhammadu Buhari’s Anambra statement assuring Nigerians of their safety though! How can a private citizen in London assure other private citizens in Nigeria of their safety? And what is the point in having an acting President in charge when the London-based private-citizen President is issuing statements? Has he resumed from London? Nigeria is getting mixed signals from the Presidency. Has the President resumed from London or is the acting President still acting?

President Muhammadu Buhari wrote to the National Assembly to make Professor Yemi Osinbajo acting President, yet he is still releasing statements as Nigeria’s President. Is he a freelance President? Osinbajo is either in charge until President Buhari returns or he is not in charge at all. In fact, I don’t know why people still pay to watch Game of Thrones on Cable TV when they can watch it for free at Aso Rock.
And a week after it became public knowledge that an anti-Igbo hate song is circulating in parts of Nigeria, we have radio silence from the Presidency. Vacationing President Muhammadu Buhari, who condemned the Ozubulu killings in a statement, has nothing to say about the anti-Igbo hate song. How won’t the anti-Igbo hate song take root when the Arewa Youths who gave the Igbo quit notice are walking around freely in public? In the wake of the anti-Igbo song, I remind the Buhari administration that we have not forgotten the speed of their one-sided arrest during the Ife Yoruba/ Hausa clash!

Obviously, this administration is very quick to go after real or imagined enemies of the Buhari administration but is slow to act against Nigeria’s enemies, if at all they even act.

Look at the difference in the way they treated the Charly Boy group and the Arewa Quit Notice group. Look at the speed at which they arrested the Buhari dog man. But what have they done against Fulani herdsmen?
According to The PUNCH Newspaper, half of Nigeria’s 71 million hectares of arable farmland is not being cultivated because farmers have abandoned their farms due to the activities of herdsmen. In Benue State alone, the governor says 1800 farmers have been killed by herdsmen in the last three years (no wonder he says we are all sick because of Buhari’s sickness). According to the Global Hunger Index, the Jonathan administration reduced hunger in Nigeria from 16.3 in 2005 to 15 points in 2013 (please Google it).

But guess what? Under the Buhari administration according to the latest Global Hunger Index, 32.9 per cent of Nigerian children under the age of five suffered stunted growth due to hunger and malnutrition. By halting attacks by herdsmen, the Buhari administration can immediately and dramatically increase the amount of food grown in Nigeria and push prices down. Yet what is this administration doing to halt the herdsmen crisis? I do not know. If you do, maybe you can tell me!

YourImaginaryBF:
this corrupt senate has refused to confirm Magu because there are currently 8 lawmakers, Senate President inclusive, that have cases with the EFCC. Not confirming magu meant limiting his powers.
Removing Magu will not kill the cases. The next EFCC chair will continue from where Magu stopped. In fact, keeping Magu there as acting chairman man has keeping things slow in EFCC. Check it naa, and since he was rejected by the Senate, he has been so dull. What has he done since that time? Nothing. If the presidency had replaced with another competent hand (there are many other people who can do the job, Magu is not the only one), we would have moved past this stage since. Why insist on Magu if not for superiority contest?

You cannot bring somebody and say he is the best, work hard for him and after one year you say he isn’t good. Is it fair?
This is the dilemma those who continue to praise this APC administration face now. Having campaign vigorously for APC, insulting people in the process, calling GEJ clueless, only to end up with this massive failure of a govt. They don't know how to admit that they were deceived or that they deceived people. They're too ashamed to admit it. So they go on singing the praises of the party that they know has failed.
But they should know that it is not a weakness to admit one's error, it's actually a strength. Admit it and make amends. That's what Kanti Bello has done. That's what you should do.

PoliticsKanti Bello Says President Buhari Has Failed, Regrets Inviting Him To Politics by OKDnigeria(op): 10:59pm On Jul 16, 2017
…Calls Oyegun A Sychophant

Senator Kanti Bello is a former Senate Majority Whip, who represented Katsina North Senatorial District on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) before joining the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), one of the legacy parties that formed the APC.

*How will you assess the Buhari administration in the last two years?*

I will be frank with you. This is the first interview I am giving in the last two years. I have decided to be quiet. The reason is simple: this is our government and I contributed a lot for the government to be formed, both at the state and national level. I did it not for personal gain, but I thought it would be the government that would assist the ordinary people; a government that will turn round the economy.

I am a very practical person. I thought that a government, when it comes to Buhari, will be able to put smiles on the faces of Nigerians. I know that there are some difficulties; I know that the price of oil has gone down. I know all that but the human expectations, of the ordinary people, the way the government works, I can say 90 per cent of Nigerians are disappointed. And the simple reason is this; when we voted for this government, we believed, it was not only corruption that we wanted it to stop. We also felt that ordinary people should have enough to eat; they should have work to do. We expected some of our factories, especially up North here, would be revitalised. But look at what is happening. I can tell you, no nation with 120 million people can live and be a great nation when it has to import the food it will eat and it has to import clothing. We have the land, a favourable climate. We have sunshine. So, there is no reason we should be importing food and there is no reason why we shouldn’t be clothing ourselves. The reason is simple; there is no agenda to get things done.

*Are you still an APC member?*

Yes

*Are you saying your party didn’t have a blueprint of what to do when it took over power?*

Well, I don’t see its implementation. Tell me one. For example, power generation and transmission is one of the problems met by Buhari. Up till today, how much are we generating? 4,000 megawatts? It hasn’t gone beyond that! Is it not a disgrace for a government that is supposed to be moving forward? Up till now, our factories, our industries are dead, our people are poorer. Look at our economy, it has been so bad; the exchange rate, they say it has been improving. Improving? From N160 to a dollar, now it is N368 to a dollar. Is that an improvement? Two years ago, it was N160 to the dollar. Is that something to be proud of? It reached almost N500. We thank the acting president, because each time he comes in, there seems to be some improvements in the way things are done. We don’t know why it is happening that way. Maybe it is his luck, but there are some little improvements.

*You mean, each time the vice-president takes charge in acting capacity, you see improvement in governance?*

Yes, I see little improvement.

*Are you insinuating that Buhari lacks the capacity for the office?*

Well, even if he has the capacity to do it, he didn’t do it. Look, some of us have to be honest with ourselves, I have nothing against Buhari but the ordinary people of this country are suffering today.

Let me be frank with you, in Katsina, where I come from, people are finding it difficult to eat three times a day, not even two times. Things are difficult. The economy is so bad, whatever you are buying, and inflation has tripled. A bag of maize that used to sell at N4,000 when Buhari took over is now selling at N16,000 and at that price, people aren’t getting it to buy.

I am a practical person. Do we look at all these and continue to praise the government? No! Yes, we praise the government when it comes to Boko Haram, it has reduced its activities in the North-East and there is some stability in parts of the North with regards to the bombings—it has reduced drastically or virtually gone. Yes, there is something good there but then after it has gone, there is kidnapping. People are being kidnapped and murdered. We aren’t safe, you cannot even travel from here to Kaduna without feeling that something can happen to you. You see, we have got rid of one evil and another has come in.

So, all we are saying is that Buhari and his APC government hasn’t solved our problems. I am part of that government and I apologise to the masses that our economic policy is a failure. We have scored 50 per cent on security but certainly the economic policy of the government has failed the masses, because I am part of the masses. People aren’t living well in this country. That’s the truth.

*But, your party always attributes the poor state of the economy to mismanagement by the immediate past administration; it claimed it inherited huge liabilities from the PDP. What is your take?*

No, come on! That’s not true. We kept quiet about it, because we thought they were saying the truth. Look, how much money has the APC government now collected from the anti-corruption they are doing.

Where is the money? Nobody is accounting for the amount of money they have retrieved from people. Each time you hear so much billions. With that, there should have been some improvement. So, you cannot continue to blame the PDP. After two years, you are still blaming the previous government and you have only four years. Now, we have spent over 50 per cent of the time blaming PDP. I think something is wrong with us. So, I think it is high time our party stopped blaming [Goodluck] Jonathan, because the ordinary people somewhere with their anger are even saying that the Jonathan government was better. That’s the truth. We are afraid to come out and that’s why some of us don’t even speak, we worked hard and we believed in what we were doing, we thought things would be better, but incompetent people are put in charge and of course some people are behind the scene controlling Buhari.

*You are making insinuation about a cabal, but the Presidency has always insisted that there is no cabal*

What the hell are you talking about there? No cabal? Well, if there is no cabal, the Buhari I know, I always wonder if he can behave the way these people are behaving. My reason: I have known Buhari since 1960, when I was a very small boy. He was my head boy in secondary school and the Buhari I knew, the Buhari I invited to come and play politics, I think he shouldn’t have been behaving the way he is behaving.

The people that are appointed into positions, everybody knew in this country, they aren’t the first class. For example, even this anti-corruption, the very first day it was reported that Babachir Lawal, the suspended Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) was allegedly involved in a shady deal and there was evidence to that effect, the Buhari I knew would have sacked him but he couldn’t do it. It was later I learnt that the man was suspended by the acting president.

The Buhari I knew has no reason to keep Ibrahim Magu. If Magu was alleged to be corrupt by the DSS report, so many people have been investigated and jailed because of DSS report, so is the DSS report supposed to be implemented, half-heartedly and selectively? For some people, it is right, for others it isn’t. And nobody is saying anything. Now, the same DSS is saying that Magu has a case to answer and the Senate is saying it cannot confirm Magu and the government, the one I thought is honest enough, is still keeping that man. What for? Is he the only Nigerian that can do the job? I have nothing against Magu; I don’t even know him but is he the only Nigerian that can occupy that office? There is supposed to be credibility in what government does. You keep telling me that they inherited a bad economy, why did Nigerians elect Buhari in the first place? Is it not because we felt Jonathan wasn’t doing the job and that he should come and correct it? That’s the reason why we elected him. We didn’t elect him for jokes; we didn’t elect him to give excuses. We elected him to correct things. Why is he not doing it? You see, we were quiet, because we didn’t want to talk, not because we thought what they were doing was right, but because we believed we should give him a chance for two years, if there will be improvement. But I am sorry to say I am disappointed.

*Why are you so pessimistic? You mean you don’t see hope of improvement in Buhari’s administration, in terms of performance?*

No, I don’t think there is much we can achieve. Look, two years into an administration is enough to make a landmark, because he has been looking for this job for so many years. Four times and he came in without an agenda, only to bring in some little boys who know nothing?. Incompetent people were given appointments.

*Incompetent people? Can you be specific?*

No. You think about the people he appointed, from the ministers, to heads of parastatal-agencies. Are they the best? I don’t have to name anybody. Why should I?

*You are saying Buhari cannot effect positive changes, but the national chairman of your party, John Odigie-Oyegun, keeps saying the man is the best; that the 2019 ticket has been reserved for him. What do you have to say?*

Oyegun can be as sycophantic as he wants, but the truth of the matter is that some of us are going to look for a Nigerian that’s going to address the economy. Our problem is the economy and we are going to shop for a Nigerian who can help us solve it. You see, every generation has to face some challenges and our challenge now in this country is the economy. It isn’t a question of Buhari coming to fight insecurity; it isn’t corruption anymore, because you can only be corrupt when there is something to eat. Yes, it still thrives because nothing is going on and there is an allegation that it is thriving under Buhari, only people that they dislike are being arrested. Let me give you a typical example. Even this fight against corruption, it seems to be one-sided. They said they arrested a former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa, because he collected N100 million campaign money, but the same campaign money, I was made to understand, was collected by Tony Anenih and he wasn’t arrested. Is Anenih’s own different from that of Bafarawa? I don’t like anything that looks sectional and we are going to look for a Nigerian with no vendetta at all that wants to serve this country.

*You are from Katsina. Can you mount the podium in your state and tell the people to reject Buhari at the poll?*

Of course, why not? I was the one who went to Katsina to say Buhari was the best. Are the Katsina people not hungry now? Are they rich, because Buhari is the president? Look, I have told you, I have nothing against Buhari as a person, get that very clear. But his government hasn’t worked the way it should and we should be honest enough to say it. Are you saying because Buhari is president, Katsina people are now buying a bag of maize for N4,000? Are they very happy that bag of rice is now cheaper? Are they happy because the cloths they are wearing are now cheaper? Look, we are talking about reality and I am a practical realist. We have nothing against Buhari, we like him, he is from our state, but we also like ourselves more than Buhari. Our children have to live well, have to get better education. Why am I not accusing Katsina State government, because it is doing their best but unfortunately at the federal level, things aren’t working the way they should. The Federal Government is supposed to show the way for the states to follow and it is most unfortunate that they aren’t doing it and some of us have to say it. That’s the truth; I don’t care what they say on the social media when they read this interview. We are going to look for a Nigerian that’s going to change this economy and help the masses.

*Do you think the APC can still win election, repeat the 2015 success story?*

The way they are going, I don’t think so. What APC are you talking about? I have been there and I contributed a lot to the development of the party. But from day one when they formed the government, neither the government nor the party has invited us for a meeting. I think people are fed up with the party, let me be frank with you. They are just living in a fool’s paradise, thinking that people are very happy.

Let me tell you, we have a vice-president, who is now acting president; let me be frank with you, if there is no Buhari, he becomes the president and that’s what the constitution says. Let us give him the opportunity to serve. I am not judging Buhari on a tribal basis, if I wanted to be tribalistic, I will say he is the best thing that ever happened to Nigeria like some people have been saying but that’s not the truth. I repeat, I have nothing personal against Buhari but the system is drifting; the government is sinking. We are in a mess.

*You have dismissed your party, the APC as a failure. Is there an alternative platform, because all the dominant opposition parties are in crises?*

You are wrong. Look, I am telling you what is a party? If you want to define a party, it is a congregation of people. Of course, we accused PDP as a congregation of corrupt people, who were clueless. But some of these clueless people, some of these corrupt people are now in APC. They are there and they have taken over the party. So, if some of us decide to go and do something else and we get the right congregation of people to come in, then we have a party. Party is about people. There is a saying that the number of people in the market defines its importance, not the number of stalls in the market. So, that’s the truth. People will decide, it isn’t a question of party now. Nigeria has to be salvaged, economically. We cannot continue this way, because if we continue this way, where are we heading? We have to get people with the right economic sense, patriotic people who will come and solve this problem.

*You said “the Buhari I knew’’ the other time. Are you of the opinion that he is being held captive by certain people?*

I suspect so. It hasn’t made sense to me, because there are certain things I personally discussed with him and he told me, “okay, it will be done.” The Buhari I knew, if he gave you his word before, he would do it. But, he has changed. So, I believe that something is wrong. Maybe, his mind is no longer the one I knew, but I cannot determine, because since he got to power I haven’t been to the Villa. I only met him once in Katsina and we discussed.

*Have you been shut out or you refused to pay him a visit?*

Do you walk into the Villa just like that? You have to seek for appointment, isn’t it? Nobody will ever give Kanti Bello appointment; they don’t want to see my face there, because I had been a PDP person. After working for APC for four solid years: from PDP to APC. After working so hard for it, I was shut out. That’s the type of government we have.

*What is your take on agitations for the restructuring of the country? Certain groups like IPOB and MASSOB are actually demanding for its outright balkanisation.*

Let us be honest with ourselves, we have seen it in Southern Sudan now which is a new country. Are they better off? The truth is that, they aren’t. Why people are agitating for restructuring is simple: if you are hungry and you aren’t sure of the future of your children, then you start calling for restructuring. You have to look for an alternative. So, they think the country will be better, if restructured. That’s their thinking. I have no grudge against that but I believe it is wrong.

Some of us thought once we had Buhari, this talk won’t happen again. But unfortunately, it has remained with us, because people aren’t happy and we need somebody who is going to help the economy to be better. It isn’t impossible. We need somebody who is a detribalised Nigerian. Maybe it is difficult to get but we will, with a lot of hard work, efforts that can heal the wounds, so that after 2019, nobody will be thinking about restructuring again. That’s what we need

*Any regrets inviting Buhari to politics?*

I really regret it now, because I thought it is going to be better than what we are having now. That’s why I couldn’t speak for two years, because you cannot bring somebody and say he is the best, work hard for him and after one year you say he isn’t good. Is it fair? But after two years and looking at it, I can talk. I hope he gets well, come back and finish his two years. Whichever way, I don’t see much out of it anyway, because the first two years have been wasted, nothing to show for it. My regret is what I would tell the ordinary people I convinced to vote for Buhari.

*What if he says, he is seeking a fresh mandate in 2019?*

Let him come back and be well. We pray for him to come back in good health. He has every right to seek for our mandate, but some of us also have a right to look for who will give Nigerians the best.

*What if he reaches out to you and assures you that he would make amends? Will you support him in 2019?*

That’s too theoretical. I don’t want to answer that question, it is too theoretical. The truth of the matter is that, we are now in a mess. You don’t seem to understand how difficult it is for the masses. Is it because you live in Abuja? Look, I know what people are passing through in my village, this fasting period. People cannot eat. Now, you want me to go and tell people to forget what happened in the last two years; that it is going to be better. No, I am going to tell my people to look for an alternative, what will help your kids to go to school and be able to live a better life. The middle class is now wiped out. This country is in a hole, deep hole
