The meeting is a follow up to the working group formed in the last National Economic Council meeting (NEC) chaired by the Vice President.

Troops of 707 Special Forces Brigade, Nigerian Army, on Monday 29th January 2018, raided the shrine and suspected hideout of a notorious native Doctor, Mr. Tordue Gber (Tiv Swem), who act as spiritual adviser to the wanted armed criminal militias at Tor-Dunga town, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State.

During the operation, the troops succeeded in arresting the occupant, Gber (Tiv Swem), who is an ally of the wanted notorious criminal, Akwazar Terwase (alias Gana). It will be recalled that he was declared wanted by the security agencies and has been at large since 2016.

Preliminary investigation shows that
Mr. Tordue Gber (Tiv Swem) acts as spiritual counselor that provides Gana with “diabolical” powers and the shrine serves as hideout for wanted armed militia, meeting and planning point for operations and logistics base for the criminal armed militias that operate in Benue, Nasarawa and Taraba States.

The native Doctor was arrested along with one of his accomplice, Mr. Atoo Kuwe Francis, while planning to carry out an attack and abduct one Mr. Zaya at Tse Bente village in the same LGA. However, Mr. Tordue was shot dead during the struggle to disarm him.

A second republic senator has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately resign from office and not wait until the coming general elections.

Professor Banji Akintoye made the call on Wednesday during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.


The former associate of late Obafemi Awolowo believes the President does not have the ability to manage the country’s economy, saying he would advise him to quit his job if he had the opportunity to meet him.

He noted that Nigeria has been evaluated as one of the countries with the highest rate of poverty, as well as one of the nations where citizens have the least access to basic amenities.

“This president does not seem to know or understand Nigeria, does not seem to care about the suffering of people, and has no clue at all about managing the economy,” said Professor Akintoye.

“If I were to stand in from of him, as a fellow citizen who belongs to my generation, I would say ‘brother, you can’t do this job’.

“I will say to him, ‘my dear brother you cannot do this job; you have no idea (of) how to do it. Our country is perishing under you, I would advise that you resign (and) not even talk about standing election in 2019’. I think he should resign right now,” he added.

Protesters numbering over 500, Thursday, shutdown the capital city of Abuja, in protest of the protracted clashes between farmers and herdsmen, which have resulted to deaths of many Nigerians in Benue, Taraba States and others parts of the country.



The group, under the aegis of Good Governance and Transparency Initiative  is calling on the Nigerian government as well international community to urgently wade into the foot-dragging crises, which have rendered many citizens homeless and bereaved.


The protesters, who were seen displaying placards, bearing various inscriptions, called for the urgent probe of governors Samuel Ortom of Benue and Darius Ishaku of Taraba States over their involvement in the attacks.


  


Speaking on behalf of the group,  Mrs. Jaiyeola Mohammed, the Executive Director, said the attitudes of Ortom and Ishiaku speak volume, a clear case of hand of Esau but voice of Jacob.


Mohammed alleged that Ortom, especially has using the state's resources to cover up his mess by sponsoring protests abroad.


She voiced the stand of the group thus, "Our bigger worry, however, is the inaction that has continued to allow attention to focus on the wrong sources of the crisis. There is so much of playing the ostrich going on while the crisis festers. Our thoughts are that the problem in Benue state would have been contained to that geographical entity and promptly dealt with to save other states from suffering the fallout of a politically and ethnically motivated crisis.


" A killing related to the crisis in Benue has been reported in Ekiti while Taraba, Nasarawa, Plateau and even Kaduna are practically on edge because of what has happened in that state. 


"It is most unfortunate that instead of accepting reality and admitting what he did wrong to provoke the current crisis, Governor Ortom has rather engaged in looking at the cause of the problem in every other place except within himself. 


"This is despite the barrage of documentary evidence of him setting up militias and placing firearms in their arms to kill herdsmen. He is yet to explain what he stands to gain from the deaths of Benue people that he knew would definitely result from reprisals from the activities of his militias. 


"The Benue state governor has even taken things a step further by deploying N1 billion of his state's fund to finance protests in major cities of the world as we earlier alerted. Not even the shame of being discovered as manipulating events was enough to dissuade this governor from this folly. Our concern is how a state governor could spend so much of his state's resources on just eight ( protesters in the United States. We then wonder how much he has spent on the hundreds of militias he has organized and how much he has expended on their weapons. 



"Our group is interested in the peaceful resolution of the conflict between herdsmen and farmers, which is why we are staging this protest to demand a full investigation of the roles of the Governor of Benue State, Mr. Samuel Ortom and his Taraba state counterpart, Mr. Darius Dickson Ishiaku in sponsoring ethnic militias to wipe out people of Fulani origin.


" Only such investigation would reveal facts that will prevent a full descent into state sponsored ethnic cleansing that has repercussions for all ethnic nationalities in Nigeria. 


"The investigation should include terms of reference that will yield recommendations in pursuit of identifying militia members and recovering the weapons reportedly issued to them by these governors or their agents."

WHAT IS CATTLE COLONY?

The idea behind the Cattle Colonies is to cater for the needs of cattle herders in terms of availability of resources to take care of their cattle while avoiding unnecessary clashes and tussles over economic resources such as land and water between them and farmers.

Cattle colonies are expected to be large expanses of land procured by the Federal Government, in collaboration with States (already 16 States have indicated interest in this), where water, grass and security would be provided to cattle herders who would in turn pay for rent and other services provided by the Government.


DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CATTLE COLONY AMD RANCHING

1. A Cattle Colony is bigger in size than a Ranch, and caters for more cattle. A cattle colony can cater for as many as 40 ranchers.
2. While a ranch is provided for by the Herders, a Colony is provided for by the Government who collect rent from the herders to use these facilities. The reason for this is that ranching is a Capital intensive venture and cannot be embarked on by rural subsistent low earning herders, if ranching were to be made compulsory, it would be hard for rural herdsmen to comply with it.
3. In Cattle Colonies the Federal Government collaborates with the States to provide these lands (note that lands, by virtue of the Land Use Act are vested in the Governors of the State), water and security, while in ranches the herders have to provide this for themselves.

BENEFITS OF HAVING CATTLE COLONIES


1. Safety of lives and property and a drastic reduction in farmers and herders clashes
2. Cattle produce healthier beef when they are kept in colonies, and also produce more milk
3. Farmers do not have to worry about the safety of their crops and thus more production is ensured for the farmers, which means more economic activity in the agriculture sector
4. Cattle colonies would put a stop to cattle being rustled by thieves and terrorists
5. It would become easier to identify criminals who either masquerade as herdsmen or are herdsmen who commit murderous crimes and destruction.

President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that his administration's focus for the new year will be infrastructure which will bolster the progress of the country.

The president made this disclosure on his official Twitter account (@MBuhari) on Tuesday, January 23, 2018, as he told Nigerians to expect development in the form of roads, railway projects and power.

In light of the recent spate of violent killings in the country, especially the series of carnage allegedly orchestrated by herdsmen, the president also noted that security will remain a priority for his administration.

He posted, "Our focus in 2018 is infrastructure: roads, our railway projects, power, and airport concessions. We will intensify our efforts, and you will see progress. In this regard we are very grateful for what the Chinese are doing to support us, in financial and technical ways.

Security will also continue to be a priority. We have increased the deployment of security forces, to halt the attacks by herdsmen on communities, and bring to an end the sorrow and hardships that vulnerable communities have had to endure.

On the economy, I'm pleased with the progress we're making, the stable Naira, falling inflation, rising external reserves, rising harvests, an improving business environment as demonstrated by our rise in the World Bank's Doing Business Index, and growing manufacturer confidence."

HUNDREDS of indigenes of Benue State residing in five states of the Southeast geopolitical zone on Saturday staged a peaceful protest in Enugu the Enugu State capital over the incessant killings of their people living in their home state by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The states are Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.

The protesters who had initially planned to begin the peaceful demonstration at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu before they were stopped by the Police, shifted to Nike Lake Hotel at the outskirts of Enugu metropolis apparently to avoid clashes with security operatives.

The Spokesmen of the protesters, Chief Abel Abah the Ochidoma of Enugu State, Reverend Ternenbe Tor of Universal Reformed Christian Church and Dr David Wayas of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in their separate speeches, told reporters that they were under the auspices of “Concerned Benue Indigenes Resident in Eastern Nigeria”, and appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful by stopping the incessant killings.

They vowed to defend themselves if the authorities refuse to check the spate of killings in their home state, wondering why the President Buhari led Federal government classified the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a Terrorist group while the Fulani herdsmen who have been killing innocent people are left to roam about the streets scot-free.

The group also expressed their support to the anti-grazing law enacted by their home State Governor, Ortom, and called for its implementation. They also insisted that the anti-grazing law is meant to protect their people from the menace of Fulani herdsmen.

They also called on the Governors of the South East of the country and other political leaders in the country to come to the rescue of Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau States, predicting that the South East zone is likely to be the next target.

Some of the placards carried by the demonstrators read: “Enough is Enough of the Benue Killings by Terrorists Herdsmen”, “Cattle cannot be given more attention than human lives”, “Your cows are not more valuable than. Human lives”.
